The best Swiss food in Switzerland, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide has weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Radius by Stefan Beer comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Zürich.

Kinds of places

  1. The name tells you the rule: every ingredient comes from within 50 kilometers of the kitchen. This is fine dining inside Interlaken's grand old Victoria Jungfrau hotel, where the chef sometimes steps out to walk you through the menu himself, which feels less like a gimmick than it sounds. Local shrimp and regional caviar appear alongside produce the team grows themselves. There's a conventional set menu, a vegan one, and a wine pairing drawn from the same tight geography. It holds a Michelin star.

  2. Rank 1. Regina Montium

    Creative Swiss

Perched at 1,550 meters on the Rigi, this Michelin-starred creative Swiss restaurant is genuinely easier to reach by mountain railway than by road, which sets the tone nicely. The kitchen grows over 400 herbs on site and uses mostly organic Swiss produce, turning them into technically confident, idea-driven dishes that avoid the kind of theatrical flourish altitude sometimes inspires. The alcohol-free pairings, house-made lemonades among them, are worth the detour on their own.

  4. The Stübli's wooden floor and fireplace lounge set the tone for this family-run Swiss restaurant tucked away in the Obwalden countryside. Traditional cuisine is the anchor, but the kitchen roams freely, moving from beef stroganoff to Mediterranean pasta to Indian lamb curry without apology. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand, and the proprietress runs the room with the kind of attentive ease that suggests she has never once lost track of a table.

  5. Rank 3. Blume

    Swiss

A Swiss restaurant in a quiet village outside Zurich where the chef's affection for risotto is matched only by a commitment to offal, and where certain dishes, like the flambéed hanging skewer, require advance notice and arrive as a meal for the whole table. The room downstairs runs rustic and cozy; upstairs tilts slightly more formal. The proprietress runs the floor with warmth that makes it feel like someone's home, which is a compliment. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  6. Rank 3. Gasthaus Schupfen

    Traditional Swiss

A half-timbered farmhouse on the Rhine with a terrace that makes you forget you had anywhere else to be. This is a traditional Swiss restaurant where the kitchen leans on classics, perch with tartare sauce, Zurich-style veal with rösti, and whatever the season is doing at that moment. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks. Locals who know the place tend to book the terrace first and figure out the menu second.

  8. A casual restaurant tucked inside the Schützengarten Brewery building, where a faint malty drift from next door follows you to your table. The room splits between rustic at the front and something a little more composed toward the back, and the courtyard terrace is genuinely sheltered. Swiss standbys anchor the menu, Zürcher Geschnetzeltes among them, alongside a saffron fish soup that earns its place. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and popular enough with locals that you'll want a reservation.

  9. Rank 3. Sonne

    Traditional Swiss

A fourth-generation family restaurant in a tiny Lucerne village, where the old farmhouse bones get a quietly modern polish inside. The kitchen turns traditional Swiss and regional cooking into something careful and seasonal, with a rotating cast of daily specials and set menus alongside the à la carte. The wine list runs from small formats to double magnums, and the cheesery next door sells its own. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  11. Rank 11. Auberge de la Couronne

    Seasonal Swiss Bistro

A vaulted dining room inside a renovated traditional inn on the road through the Intyamon valley sets the tone: rustic bones, contemporary French cooking. Lunch runs bistro-casual, evenings go properly fine dining, and the kitchen leans hard on Swiss seasonal produce throughout. An all-Swiss wine list keeps things regionally honest in a way that feels principled rather than gimmicky.

  12. Rank 11. Chez Vrony

    Regional Swiss

A ski-slope chalet at 2,100 metres with a straight-on view of the Matterhorn, reached by a 20-minute walk from the Sunnegga funicular through the village of Findeln. Inside, the wood-heavy alpine interior does exactly what it promises, and the terrace tables go fast for obvious reasons. The cooking is rooted in the Valais, leaning on regional cheeses, dried meats, and mountain produce. Dress warm enough for the walk up; dress however you want once you arrive.

  14. The dining room is a former cowshed, which sets the theme before you've even sat down. This cozy fondue and raclette spot inside a hotel in Brail leans hard into its heritage: cheese fondues, raclette, capuns, and fondue chinoise fill out a menu that has never once pretended cows aren't the point. Cheesemaking demonstrations run some evenings, and there's a shop if you'd like to carry the enthusiasm home in wax-sealed form.

    Contemporary Swiss

Floor-to-ceiling glass wraps a space that replaced a traditional village inn, letting light flood a room that manages to feel modern without feeling cold. The kitchen runs a surprise tasting menu Wednesday through Saturday evenings, with à la carte available midweek and a trimmed-down version at lunch. Contemporary Swiss cooking in a Schenkon village setting is a combination that keeps the locals coming back, and the bar handles the after-work crowd if you just want a drink.

  16. Rank 11. Rechberg 1837

    Innovative Swiss

The conceit here is strict: this restaurant cooks only with Swiss regional ingredients that existed before the industrial age, which rules out quite a lot and forces genuine creativity. The result is an à la carte menu alongside four or six course surprise menus built around things like trout from a named local farm or baked beetroot with goat cheese. The room is warm, the staff know the ethos cold, and the whole thing is less precious than it sounds.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
