The Best German Food in Switzerland

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best German food in Switzerland, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide and The 50 have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Gasthaus Löwen comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Zürich.

More Less

Adler and Anker hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The 50 next.

Kinds of places

  1. The wood-panelled dining room upstairs is old-school Swiss inn, the kind with beautifully laid tables and a fireplace that earns its keep. But the cooking is a Michelin-starred surprise menu where you choose the number of courses and the chef brings them out himself, which is either charming or slightly unnerving depending on your personality. Classical French roots run through everything, with modern and quietly global ideas folded in. The stone garden across the street opens in summer.

  3. Rank 2. Anker

    German

A first-floor dining room in the Appenzell hills, low ceilings and wood panelling doing exactly what low ceilings and wood panelling are supposed to do. This is a traditional Swiss restaurant with a Bib Gourmand, running a menu of veal liver, rösti, and Chateaubriand for two, with the meat coming from the restaurant's own butchery. The tram to St. Gallen stops nearby, which is either convenient or a reason to stay for one more round.

  4. Rank 2. Bären

    Seasonal German

A proper Swiss restaurant on the village square, with two dining rooms that manage to feel both grand and unhurried. The kitchen runs on regional and seasonal ingredients sourced as locally as possible, and a Big Green Egg handles the barbecue side of things with quiet seriousness. The wine list leans Swiss. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the staff are the kind who know when to appear and when not to.

  5. Rank 2. Gasthof zum goldenen Kreuz

    Traditional German

Seventeenth-century painted panelling lines the dining room of this traditional Swiss restaurant, where a Michelin Bib Gourmand kitchen turns seasonal, farm-sourced ingredients into unfussy, deeply flavoured plates. A terrace tucked behind a wall of greenery draws the lunch crowd in warmer months. Service is warm and unhurried. The room that Goethe once slept in is now a named dining nook, which is either charming or slightly haunted, depending on your mood.

  7. Rank 2. Wirtshus zum Wyberg

    Regional German

A country inn in the Zurich hinterland where the menu swings from lobster to house-made veal meatloaf without any apparent identity crisis. There are two rooms: a simple ground-floor Wirtsstube and a slightly dressed-up upstairs dining room with a terrace that turns into a fondue parlour come winter. Classic and seasonal cooking, Bib Gourmand recognized, and a shop on site for taking the good stuff home.

  8. Rank 2. Zum Alten Stephan

    Traditional German

A traditional restaurant tucked into the old town of Solothurn, where the kitchen leans into the kind of classic Central European cooking that doesn't apologize for butter. Sweetbreads with morel sauce, a cordon bleu that regulars apparently guard with their lives, and a wine list that runs through Swiss, French, and Italian bottles. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a terrace out front that earns its keep when the weather cooperates.

  9. Rank 2. Zum Kaiser Franz

    Austrian German

A wood-paneled Austrian restaurant beside Lake Zug, where the Wiener schnitzel comes in large or small portions and the fish of the day was swimming in the adjacent lake that morning. Tafelspitz, breaded chicken, and curd dumplings round out the menu in the way that only a kitchen with a clear point of view can manage. The room is cozy without being fusty, service is genuinely attentive, and the place holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  10. The turreted hilltop hotel housing this fine dining room is the kind of backdrop that makes a meal feel faintly theatrical, which suits Heiko Nieder's cooking just fine. Multi-course tasting menus pull ingredients from Iceland, Japan, and France, shaped into something precise and quietly restless. The golden dining room and red velvet seating lean into the drama, and the summer terrace looks out over Zurich, the lake, and the Alps.

  12. The Braustube is the laid-back sibling to the more formal Traubensaal next door, a regional German gasthaus where the kitchen takes the same care either way. Pork cheeks braised in apple with mashed potato and bacon-fried Brussels sprouts is the kind of dish that makes you stop talking mid-sentence. The wine list runs deep, with a champagne selection that surprises for a room this unfussy. In summer, the garden terrace fills up fast.

  14. A vaulted Old Town dining room where the chef fuses his Franconian roots with Swiss instincts, turning braised beef roulade and sausage salad into something that feels like an heirloom rather than a menu item. The room reads like a chic gastropub that stumbled into a medieval cellar and decided to stay. The wine list leans toward smaller growers, the staff are warm without being theatrical, and the courtyard terrace makes a strong case for lingering.

  15. Rank 11. Löwen Gourmet

    Seasonal German

Ten diners maximum, eight courses, one sitting per evening: Löwen Gourmet operates less like a restaurant and more like a dinner party where you happened to need a reservation. It shares a building with a casual brasserie, but the gourmet room is its own quiet world, focused on seasonal, regionally sourced cooking. The terrace out back looks onto the village church, which is either very peaceful or very Swiss, probably both.

  17. Freshly baked bread and plaited brioche are stacked in the entrance before you've even found your table, and the cheese trolley that follows is its own event. This wood-panelled traditional restaurant in the Swiss countryside has been in the same family for thirteen generations, with one half running the room and the other cooking seasonal, classically rooted dishes. Tableside carving for large cuts or whole fish is a fixture, and a sake list sits alongside the wine.

  18. A medieval fortified tower looms over the courtyard terrace, which sets the tone before you've seen a menu. This is a country restaurant in the Swiss sense: solid regional cooking, a room full of local history, and dishes flagged on the menu when they're properly from around here. The kitchen runs a mix of regional and international plates, and the terrace is the kind of place you'd linger over lunch longer than you planned.

  19. The Zunftstube, the guild room on the upper floor, has a sloping floor that leaves you dining at a mild tilt, which adds to the sense that this old restaurant has been doing things its own way for a very long time. It's a warm, wood-panelled spot serving classic regional German-Swiss cooking, the kind of place where veal sausage with red wine onion sauce is a perfectly reasonable anchor for an evening. An old-school institution in Sankt Gallen's old town.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
