  8. Knife-cut noodles in long-simmered chicken broth are the reason people keep coming back to this Koreatown noodle shop, which has been a fixture on Wilshire long enough to feel like part of the neighborhood's furniture. The kalguksu is chewy and restorative, the mandu arrive either boiled or fried, and on hot days the cold spicy jjolmyeon earns its keep. Bright lights, no fuss, and regulars who know the menu by heart.

  18. The walls are buried in British memorabilia, which is either charming or a lot, depending on how you feel about commemorative royal plates. Either way, this is a proper English pub in Fullerton, the kind that's been around forever and makes fish and chips, bangers and mash, and homemade baked pies without apologizing for any of it. The fish and chips have a following. Scratch-made soups and desserts round things out.

    Dim Sum Chinese

The beef noodle soup here has a peppery, slow-built broth that earns its reputation quietly. This is a Taiwanese-Chinese casual spot in Irvine, the kind of place where the noodles, crispy pork chop over rice, and spicy wontons keep the room perpetually full. A few Sichuan dishes round out the menu, including a beef tendon with garlic sauce that regular customers seem to order without looking down. Fast service, warm room, zero pretension.

  24. Part cafe, part specialty grocery, Alta Baja Market anchors downtown Santa Ana with one of the largest selections of Mexican wines you'll find under one roof, alongside heirloom corn, beans, and grains worth browsing. The breakfast and lunch menu leans New Mexican and border-crossing, with green chile eggchiladas built on La Princesita tortillas. Order a michelada and you'll understand why people linger here longer than they planned.

  25. Rank 722. Bakers Bench

    Vegan Bakery

Vegan croissants that make you forget to ask whether they're vegan: that's the opening argument at this pastry shop in East LA, run by a chef whose work with nondairy butter has quietly shifted what the format can do. The Danishes lean on fruit from the Santa Monica Farmers' Market, and the annual pithivier has developed its own following. The New York Times named it among the top bakeries in the country.

  28. Rank 722. Fuoco Pizzeria Napoletana

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The wood-burning oven was built in Naples by Stefano Ferrara and runs close to 1,000 degrees, which explains the blistered, char-edged crusts that come out of this Neapolitan pizzeria in downtown Fullerton. The mozzarella bar stocks cheese imported weekly from Caserta, so the margherita is taken rather seriously here. The dining room fills fast with locals who have clearly done this before, so plan accordingly.

  30. Rank 722. Kahani

  31. Rank 722. Kareem's Falafel

    Middle Eastern

The house falafel recipe here is so closely guarded that the family started selling it wholesale rather than let anyone reverse-engineer it at a competitor's table. This cash-friendly falafel shop sits in Anaheim's Little Arabia District and gets properly packed at lunch, so the outdoor patio exists for good reason. The baba ganoush and hummus are the moves, though the feta fries suggest the kitchen isn't precious about tradition either.

  32. Rank 722. Mayfield

    Levantine

Shakshuka and a Negroni sounds like a contradiction until you sit down at Mayfield, a modern Mediterranean restaurant in San Juan Capistrano where Levantine and North African flavors run alongside classic California instincts. The menu moves from Turkish eggs with labneh at brunch to za'atar fried chicken at dinner, with a harissa-aioli burger at happy hour for anyone who needs convincing. The cocktail list keeps pace.

  37. Rank 722. Yigah

    Authentic Korean

Galbi tang arrives at the table still furiously steaming, the short rib broth deep enough to make a cold evening feel like a solved problem. Yigah is a casual Korean restaurant in Garden Grove where the portions trend generous and the menu runs from boiled pork belly with napa cabbage to sizzling hot-stone bibimbap. The room is unfussy, the lighting is not dim, and nobody is performing for anyone.

  48. Rank 761. Pann's

    Classic Diner

The building alone stops traffic: a swooping, neon-trimmed Googie landmark designed by Helen Liu Fong, sitting minutes from LAX like a postcard from 1958 that never got mailed. Inside, Pann's is a classic diner with high ceilings, linoleum tables, and a boisterous cross-section of Angelenos who all seem to know exactly what they're ordering. Mornings run to chicken-fried steak; afternoons tip toward patty melts and fried chicken. Come for the architecture, stay for the food, or reverse the order.

  50. Rank 763. Avra

    Greek

The whole fish, selected by the diner and cooked to order, is the move at this airy, high-ceilinged Greek restaurant in the heart of Beverly Hills. The room leans into an easy Aegean elegance without trying too hard, and the crowd obliges by dressing accordingly. Seafood does the heavy lifting, but the Greek salad and roasted peppers with barrel-aged feta hold their own. Bring someone you want to impress, and let the pacing do the work.

  51. Rank 763. Bad Roman

    Italian

Greyhound statues loom over a room that looks like a wealthy socialite grandmother's vacation home, which is exactly the vibe Quality Branded, the group behind Don Angie, was going for. This maximalist Italian restaurant moved into the old Palm Steakhouse space and brought the New York original's cheeky energy with it. Daily-made pastas, a seafood tower, and roasted garlic babka that people apparently talk about unprompted fill out a menu that never takes itself too seriously.

  52. Rank 763. Berenjak

    Persian

Dim enough to feel genuinely clandestine, with tall dripping candles and banquettes you sink into and forget to leave, this Iranian restaurant in the Arts District is the LA outpost of a London original. The menu leans into the Iranian diaspora, with kebabs doing the heavy lifting. It sits inside Soho Warehouse, so the corner booth may or may not contain a movie star, which is either a draw or a reason to keep your eyes on the bread.

  53. The draw here is a pancake that arrives without syrup and doesn't miss it, a thin, oatmeal-based griddle cake with a slight crunch and maple cinnamon butter doing all the work. This casual breakfast spot has been a neighborhood fixture for a while now, with locations scattered around LA. Breakfast sandwiches and housemade sausages fill out the menu, but the pancakes are the reason regulars show up and the reason Eater calls them among the city's finest.

  54. Rank 763. Briciola

    Brazilian Italian

  55. The kulcha arrives stuffed with brie and gooseberry chutney, which tells you immediately where Brick Lane is coming from. This Arts District modern Indian restaurant takes its name from East London's famous curry mile, though the menu owes as much to California as to the subcontinent. Celeriac chapli kebabs and smoked butter chicken come off live fire, sourdough naan lands alongside tandoori roti, and a jaggery Old Fashioned handles drinks.

  56. Rank 763. Bub and Grandma’s Pizza

    East Coast Pizzeria

This is a sourdough slice shop on York, the pizza offshoot of the town's beloved bread operation, taking its cues from Boston, New Haven, New York, and New Jersey. That's four cities' worth of opinions about crust, all settled by one oven. The slice case changes daily, with cheese, pepperoni, and a vegan red pie always on call, plus meatballs, garlic knots, and a Caesar. Eater lists it among the best restaurants in Highland Park.

  57. Lemon ricotta pancakes show up on nearly every table at this airy daytime cafe in East Hollywood, indoors and out, full of laptops and Canyon Coffee. The menu stays deliberately short: pancakes, pastries, a handful of sandwiches, tea. It's the kind of neighborhood spot that gets called a community hub without irony, and somehow earns it.

  58. Wood-fired Argentine steaks on Melrose, served with the unhurried warmth of a family room that hasn't updated its aesthetic since Clinton's first term, and means it as a compliment. This intimate steakhouse has been around forever, still run by the same family, with one brother in the kitchen and one working the floor. The postre Gardel, a layered dulce de leche cake, has its own reputation. On the Eater 38 list of essential Los Angeles restaurants.

  59. Rank 763. Chain

    Chain Cantonese

A food concept from B.J. Novak that treats chain restaurants as source material rather than punchlines, Chain landed its first permanent home inside a mall food court, which feels exactly right. Four chefs each riff on a fast-food classic: a Cantonese fish sandwich, a spicy chicken number, a teriyaki bowl, a mapo wagyu wrap. The nostalgia is the point, and the execution is the twist.

  60. A pint-sized Venezuelan cafe on Melrose that grew out of a popular dinner party pop-up, Chainsaw serves arepas, coffee drinks, and pie from a counter you can count the seats at. The menu shifts often, but the passionfruit-lime icebox pie with its bracingly tart filling keeps showing up for good reason. Sidewalk seating, daytime hours, and a chef who might pivot to a fried snapper plate or a potato-stick-topped hot dog any given week.

  61. The team behind Loreto, Bar Seco, and Santa Canela converted a former Arts District spot into a rooftop restaurant and bar with outdoor screens and one of the more dramatic skylines Downtown has to offer. Focaccia sandwiches, panzanella, and fritto misto keep things casual while a game or a film plays overhead. It's the kind of place where the view does half the work, and nobody seems to mind.

  62. Rank 763. Crossroads Kitchen

    Plant-Based Mediterranean

White tablecloths and a room that doesn't announce itself as vegan, even a little. Crossroads Kitchen is a refined plant-based Mediterranean restaurant on Melrose where Tal Ronnen's cooking reads as fine dining first and a lifestyle statement never. The French onion soup arrives without beef broth and nobody at the table notices anything missing. A-list regulars treat the bar like a neighborhood spot, which is either aspirational or just Tuesday in Los Angeles.

  63. Rank 763. Crustacean

    Modern Vietnamese

The open kitchen here sits behind a glass floor with koi swimming beneath it, which sets the tone before the food even arrives. Crustacean is a Vietnamese restaurant that's been a Beverly Hills institution forever, known for garlic noodles and garlic-roasted Dungeness crab that regulars treat as non-negotiable. Chef Helene An works the dining room herself most nights, which is a genuinely rare thing at this price point. Note that the Beverly Hills location closes in late 2026.

  64. Rank 763. Da Prato

    Tuscan

Da Prato is a Tuscan restaurant in a floor-level downtown loft, in a part of Los Angeles where most rooms are concrete and echo. The handwritten menu draws on ancient love poems, so expect mozzarella melted over fig leaves and a dish description that involves nymphs. It changes with the chef's whims, and the pasta stays simple, which is the sensible move when the menu is already doing the flirting.

  65. Rank 763. Dante

    Upscale Italian

  66. The buttermilk pancakes here have a firm, golden exterior with a pillowy interior, and the kitchen sends them out with salted clarified butter that makes the whole thing feel like a considered decision. Du-par's is a classic American diner, been around forever, tucked inside the Original Farmers Market on Fairfax. It serves breakfast into evening, which is the kind of flexibility a pancake this good earns.

  68. Rank 763. Frank & Frank’s

    Sandwich Shop

A sandwich shop in Chinatown that stays open until 1:30 a.m. on weekends, which tells you most of what you need to know. The team behind it includes a Howlin' Ray's veteran, so the menu earns its confidence: a spicy Italian loaded with 'nduja and stracciatella crema sits next to a peanut butter and jelly, and nobody seems bothered by the range. A double hot dog is also available, for those keeping score at home.

  69. Rank 763. Goldburger Los Feliz

    Smashburger American

The medium smash is the whole philosophy here: a juicy center, lacy crisp rim, nothing overthought. This is a smashburger shop in Los Feliz, one of several around the city, all using grass-fed California beef from regenerative farms. Singles and doubles come dressed with shredded lettuce, crinkly pickles, and white onion, with curly or straight fries alongside. Eater named it among Los Angeles's essential restaurants, which tracks for a place with a line of regulars who don't bother with the menu.

  70. An all-day deli, market, and restaurant tucked into Echo Park's edge, sharing a complex with a bakery and a used bookshop, which is either very convenient or a plot to keep you there all afternoon. The team behind it cut their teeth at serious kitchens, and the menu runs from Clark Street bread sandwiches at lunch to a Zuni-riffing roast chicken at dinner. The room is casual and light-filled, the kind where people stop pretending they're just popping in.

  71. This is a relaxed all-day restaurant on North Figueroa where the patio is the main event and the interior is more of a comfortable waiting room for it. The outdoor bar pours frozen daiquiris on weekends, which tells you how the afternoon will go. The dinner menu leans Midwest comfort, with chicken parm and steak au poivre, so nobody has to commit to a theme. Eater has it on its Highland Park list.

  72. Rank 763. Jeff's Table

    Sandwich Shop

A sandwich counter tucked inside a Highland Park liquor store, run by a guy who left television writing and producing to make Reubens, which sounds like a premise for a sitcom he'd have rejected. The pastrami comes piled under melted Comte, sauerkraut, and house Russian on griddled seeded rye, with a Gruyere crisp. You order at the register, then claim one of the yellow tables on the sidewalk, ideally while the weather behaves.

  73. Rank 763. John O'Groats

    American Diner

Blue gingham tablecloths and a line out the door on weekends tell you everything before you sit down. John O'Groats is a daytime diner on West Pico that has been around forever, and its pancakes are the reason people keep coming back, big enough that the kids' plate could embarrass most adults. Gluten-free versions are available on request, which for a place this old-school is a thoughtful touch.

  74. Rank 763. K Team BBQ

    Korean Barbecue

The pork hits the grill frozen, just as it would in Seoul, and that detail tells you everything about where K Team's priorities lie. This is a Korean barbecue restaurant on Vermont with a pork-forward menu, thick collar and belly cuts caramelizing over tallow-slicked grates. The beef tongue curls beautifully too, and the pollack roe paste alongside is the move. Named to Eater's 38 best restaurants in Los Angeles.

  75. Kar Son is a sit-down Chinese restaurant in Row DTLA, a spot that sounds like a skeptic's punchline until you're inside it. The menu wanders the whole country, from Sichuan to Yunnan, and keeps a straight face doing it. Floor-to-ceiling windows and wide booths suit a solo noodle soup lunch, and at night the candles and 90s Cantopop make it a group-dinner room. Expect real-restaurant prices, not a lunch counter's.

  76. Rank 763. Kinjiro

    Izakaya

Kinjiro is a small, quiet izakaya in Little Tokyo that seats two sittings a night, and you get in by emailing for a reservation like it's 2004. The dining room is hushed enough that you'll hear the uni risotto being scooped. Plenty of the regulars greet the chef by name and order from every section of the menu, so a mix of sushi, sake, and small plates like grilled onigiri is the move.

  78. Las Cazuelas is a family-run Salvadoran restaurant on Figueroa where the recipes come down through the owner's mother, and nobody seems inclined to edit them. Pupusas are the draw, the revuelta with crisped chicharron and a three-cheese stretch in particular. The leather booths are roomy, the prices are easy, and the back lot has parking, a rarity in Highland Park that feels almost like a dare.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
