A 33-room hotel housed inside a Gothic Revival building that once held Christchurch's astronomy and physics departments, now part of the Arts Centre precinct. Rooms vary widely: some have skylights over freestanding baths, others look onto the courtyard. All the furniture was made in Canterbury. The top suite sits in an attic with a roll-top tub under an overhead skylight, and a lounge downstairs keeps books and tea on hand for guests who find all that heritage a bit much.

Why #101, not #102
Both places show 71. This one's exact Score is 71.41 and the next is 71.40, so it ranks first. We round what you see, but we rank on the exact number.
- #101 The Observatory Hotel Christchurch (this place) 71.41
- #102 Black Estate 71.40
-
The sleek black barn at the center of this fully organic and biodynamic winery estate sets the tone before you even pour a glass. The minimalist restaurant windows frame rolling hills out to the Southern Alps, the food leans local, and a B&B handles the overnight question. Mountain bikes come with the stay for the Waipara Valley Vineyard Trail, and a pre-booked visit to the neighboring vineyard gets you a proper tour of the sustainable farming side.

Japanese
A bamboo wall on a Ponsonby side street is the only hint that anything is behind it. Cocoro is a quiet, low-lit Japanese restaurant where the wood is simple, the mood is calm, and dinner arrives as a multi-course procession shaped by the idea that no meal can ever be repeated. The kitchen leans into that with a seriousness that stops just short of solemn, which is exactly the right distance.

Private cottages on a working winery estate in the Hawke's Bay, with terraces that look out over the Tuki Tuki River and sculpture scattered through the gardens. The River Lodges are the ones to aim for. Winery tours run through the local legend of Te Mata's Sleeping Giant, tastings lean into the Prestige Collection, and the on-site restaurant lists the distance from winery to ingredient right on the menu, which is either charming or guilt-inducing depending on what you order.

No sign, no menu, no way of knowing if it's even open: that's the point. Mapu is a chef's table in a Lyttelton laneway where Chilean-born Giulio Sturla seats six people per sitting and asks you to simply trust him. The ticketing system online is how you find a spot, and finding the place itself is left as an exercise for the guest. It holds a 50 Discovery recognition from The 50.

Seasonal New Zealand
A neighbourhood bistro that moved into a former post office and never looked back, with chalkboards scrawled fresh daily and so many plants the dining room is halfway to a greenhouse. The cooking leans into Kiwi classics built from seasonal local produce, the kind of food that makes a Tuesday dinner feel like an occasion. Regulars from the nearby business district fill the room most nights, and they rarely need to read the menu.

The hotel shares its name with the actual bay, which is either poetic or a mild administrative headache, depending on whether you're the ferry captain. There are no roads in or out, so a golf cart meets you on arrival, and that's essentially the last time infrastructure intrudes. A remote Marlborough Sounds resort with apartment-style rooms, a deck over the water, and dolphins nearby if you want them.

A 53-room boutique hotel sitting on the edge of Hagley Park, The George is Christchurch doing quietly confident city style rather than the rustic lodge routine. Rooms look out over greenery, e-bikes are available for a lap of the park, and the in-house bistro runs afternoon tea and pre-theatre menus for guests who've actually planned their evenings. Small enough to feel personal, central enough to make the city walkable.

The interiors are contemporary without going cold, and the on-site Majestic bar runs from brunch through cocktails and small plates as the day shifts. Saturated secondary colors and an eclectic mix of furnishings give this boutique hotel a maximalist personality that somehow still reads as distinctly South Island. Singapore's Naumi Hotels brought in a Wanaka creative agency to localize the brand's signature fantasy, and the result lands closer to a very stylish friend's house than a chain property. The Central Bar pours New Zealand wines, a courtyard garden sits tucked out back, and the staff come armed with neighborhood restaurant picks.

Four villas on a hillside above the Bay of Islands, each one a self-contained world with a personal chef, infinity pool, and glass-walled shower arrangements that require a certain comfort with the view. This small-scale luxury resort holds a Michelin Key, and its size is the whole point: with a maximum of 22 guests at once, it functions less like a hotel than a very well-appointed private escape where the main activity is deciding whether to sail, fish, or simply stop.

Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Shotover River and the Remarkables from every room at this five-star resort perched above Arthurs Point, just outside Queenstown. Rattan lights and timber headboards keep things grounded while the landscape does the decorating. Coronet Peak is close enough to build a ski day around, and the spa is there when you've had enough of both.

Two 18-hole courses spread across 650 acres outside Arrowtown, and golf is almost beside the point. This sprawling resort backs up to gardens, woodland, and waterways, with nature walks, tennis, and pétanque filling the gaps. Neapolitan Pizzeria
The puffy, charred crust here comes from Italian flour, fior di latte, and tomatoes shipped from Italy, which is a long way to go for a pizza in Ponsonby, but the dough is contemporary Neapolitan and the logic holds. This is a casual, affordable pizzeria with three Auckland locations, all informal and relaxed. The chef, Enis Baçova, arrived as a waiter and worked his way to owner, which is a good origin story for a place ranked 49th on 50 Top Pizza World.

Indian
An auto rickshaw parked by reception sets the tone at this Indian restaurant on Federal Street, where the room goes dark and moody with high tables, low sofas, and a large bar. The menu moves across the subcontinent from street snacks to slow-cooked curries, with a clear fondness for meat and a tandoor that does serious work on the lamb chops. Order the okra fries immediately and pair them with a beer while you figure out the rest.

Middle Eastern
The open kitchen inside the InterContinental sets the tone: this is a full-service Middle Eastern and Mediterranean restaurant that works equally well for a client lunch or a long dinner with someone you're trying to impress. The room is bright and contemporary, the kind of scale only a hotel can pull off without feeling cavernous. The tasting menu is a good way in if you have the time to sit and let the kitchen show off.

Andalusian
An open wood fire anchors the kitchen at this corner restaurant in Britomart, and the counter seats are the right call if you want to watch the team actually use it. The menu runs Andalusian, meaning the cooking pulls from enough cultures that fish, veg, and meat all get their own section. Most dishes come in half sizes, which makes sharing optional rather than mandatory. Sherry lovers will find the list attentive to their needs.

The meatballs come in a crayfish version here, which tells you something about where Italian-American cooking lands in New Zealand. This North Wharf restaurant leans into homemade pasta and wood-fired bistecca, with a wine list that's almost exclusively Italian. A subterranean Filipino bar and restaurant on Cross Street that occupies a space with a colourful past, which the dim lighting and speakeasy atmosphere do nothing to dispel. Steakhouse
The ageing room sits right next to the kitchen, visible and unapologetic, a glass cabinet full of Canterbury grass-fed beef doing its slow, dark work. This is a steakhouse, all long tables and booths in a moody industrial room, where the meat goes into a Spanish charcoal oven and comes out with serious intent. Sides run more creative than the usual, and the Akaroa King salmon is there for anyone who wandered in with a steak-lover.

Steakhouse
The rib-eye here gets 55 days of in-house dry-aging before it goes over mānuka and apple wood, which tells you most of what you need to know about the priorities. This is a steakhouse in Wellington's CBD, tucked into a historic building whose tall windows and high ceilings give it none of the dark, leathery gloom the genre usually insists on. Lumina lamb and market fish round out the menu for anyone who wandered in under peer pressure.

Brasserie
A big, bold brasserie that leans hard into the European classics, with a menu that swings comfortably from salt cod croquettes to braised beef cheek with escargots and a Paris-Brest that earns its place on the dessert list. The kitchen has a classical French and Italian education and makes no apologies for it. The kind of room where a long lunch can stretch past what you planned, and the wine list by the glass quietly encourages that.

Bao, potstickers, pork belly with crackling that shatters, prawn and crab toast; Hello Beasty is a loud, shared-plates restaurant pulling from Japan, Korea, and China without committing to any one flag. It sits in a busy part of Auckland's waterfront and still manages to feel like a find. The room runs loud and the service team stays composed no matter how deep into the weeds the night gets, which is most nights.

An open fireplace anchors the main dining room at this two-floor steakhouse inside the Sofitel Complex, where charcoal-cooked Angus from New Zealand shares the menu with Wagyu from Australia and Japan. The wine list runs to over 40 by the glass, which is either very generous or a trap, depending on how the evening goes. The kind of place you go when the occasion demands red meat and no apologies.

A long, narrow dining room with an open kitchen visible through an arch at the far end sets the tone at this contemporary New Zealand restaurant in Grafton. The chef runs tasting menus of five or eight courses, built around seasonal local produce, alongside a shorter à la carte for the less committed. The intimate booths make it a reliable date-night call. The Michelin Guide has it on their selected list.

The room takes its colors from the Pacific, all ocean blues and island textures, with an open kitchen at one end keeping things lively. Michael Meredith named this restaurant after his mother, whose cooking sent him into the kitchen in the first place, and the Samoan menu follows that logic. Wood-fired snapper, crispy pork hock, and panikeke to start, the fried doughnut kind, not the pancake kind.

Shane Cotton's mural of pots marks the door of this restaurant tucked into a Britomart heritage building, where distressed walls and pale oak give the room a warmth that feels earned rather than designed. An old-school institution tucked into Epsom that's been the neighborhood's go-to for a proper sit-down dinner longer than most of its regulars care to count. The kitchen keeps European technique front and center, with the odd Asian note folded in, and never performs more than the ingredients ask for. Service is attentive in the earnest, unhurried way that makes it genuinely good for a long meal with people you need to impress.

A pair of sunglasses left on the window tables tells you everything about the room: bright, open, with Waitemata Harbour filling the glass. This French restaurant in Commercial Bay folds local and seasonal produce into classic technique, and the portions are the kind that make you reconsider dessert before you've finished the main. The chocolate mousse, served tableside with honeycomb and pistachios, suggests the kitchen knows exactly what it's doing with an exit line.

Hokey pokey ice cream affogato on an Italian menu tells you exactly what kind of place this is: loose, cheerful, and not taking itself too seriously. Otto is a boisterous trattoria-style spot on K Road where the pasta is homemade, the lamb ribs are ordered by everyone, and the whole point is a big group, a loud table, and enough dishes to make sharing feel mandatory. A snug cottage in Aro Valley where the chef makes every decision for you, serving a three-course set menu that changes with each service. Named after the chef's grandmother, it has that energy. Five villas scattered across a working farm on the Canterbury coast, each dropped into its own private bay or hilltop with views over the Pacific and nobody else in sight. This is a luxury villa collection designed around genuine seclusion, so there's no restaurant, just a private chef who cooks in the lodge or delivers dinner to your door regardless of how far off the map you've managed to get. Kayaking, hiking, and farm activities are on offer when the view stops being enough.

Why #180, between #179 and #181
The places on either side also show 66. This one's exact Score is 66.1, the one above is 66.2 and the one below is 66.0, so it ranks between them. We round what you see, but we rank on the exact number.
- #179 The Marlborough Boutique Hotel & Vineyard 66.2
- #180 Aro Hā Wellness Retreat (this place) 66.1
- #181 Craggy Range Luxury Vineyard Retreat 66.0
-
A working winery that also happens to rent you a cottage for the night, Craggy Range sits in the shadow of Te Mata Peak in Hawke's Bay. One- and two-bedroom accommodations come with private terraces, wood burners, and kitchens, so the fantasy of living among the vines is genuinely livable. Two on-site restaurants draw from an organic garden and, naturally, the cellar. Chosen for the Michelin Selected Hotels list.

A large-scale mural of the first Polynesian wakas arriving at Otago Harbour wraps the façade of this boutique hotel, so the mid-century modern interior comes with a bit of context. Rooms keep it understated: white walls, light wood, designer furnishings, and sharp black and white bathrooms. A daytime café runs breakfast through lunch, and the hotel has partnered with neighbors for gym access and wellness bookings when you need them.

Nestled in the Southern Alps with Canterbury farmland rolling out in every direction, this MGallery resort swapped its traditional rooms for one-to-three-bedroom villas, each with a balcony for summer and a fireplace and spa bath for when the mountain chill sets in. The Clubhouse Bar and Restaurant keep you fed and watered on-site with seasonal local cooking and panoramic views, so leaving feels optional.

The tree houses sit ten meters off the ground, clad in copper shingles and raw local timber, with an indoor-outdoor shower that makes a strong case for never leaving. This small luxury lodge near Kaikoura pairs genuinely modern design, the work of an architect-builder family, with custom beds, organic communal dinners, and views that would make a sleeping bag feel like an upgrade. A two-and-a-half-hour drive from Christchurch, and conspicuously easier on the wallet than its peers.

The only Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course in New Zealand anchors this lodge and villa resort on the edge of Lake Taupo, which is a perfectly reasonable excuse to come this far north. Cabin-style villas look out over the fairways or the lake, Tongariro's hiking trails handle the non-golfers, the dining room runs a daily-changing menu, and the spa folds Manuka honey into most of its treatments, because of course it does.

The view across Lake Pukaki to Aoraki Mount Cook is the kind that makes you forget what you were worried about. This small, Michelin-selected retreat runs just a handful of one-, two-, and three-bedroom villas with a European-tinged luxury feel and a chef-driven, garden-to-table restaurant on site. The nearby Pukaki Observatory means the stargazing, on clear southern nights, is a legitimate reason to stay up past your bedtime.

Rotorua sits on a geothermal cauldron of geysers and bubbling mud pools, and this boutique hotel taps right into it with its own indoor mineral pool. Rooms are compact and monochromatic, with colorful tiled bathrooms and rainfall showers; larger suites add a soaking tub and separate living area. Grab a flat white from the in-house coffee shop before walking to the thermal spas, Maori museums, and the bayfront, all within easy reach.

The Beaux-Arts façade, stained glass, and sweeping staircase have been anchoring Duke Street for longer than anyone cares to count, and a recent restoration lets all of it show properly again. This heritage hotel in Cambridge has the Gallery Restaurant and a speakeasy bar downstairs, and the house gin, distilled from an old recipe, turns up in both. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels.

Floor-to-ceiling glass wraps a one-bedroom private home on a peninsula so surrounded by water it reads as its own island. This is an exclusive-use stay, so whatever you book, you get the whole place, Pohutukawa trees, yoga deck, sun deck, outdoor BBQ, and a sheltered cove below. The Michelin Guide has it in their selected hotels. Bring someone you actually like, because it's just the two of you and the Pacific.

A former private residence on what was once a sheep station, The Manse is a two-suite luxury lodge in Hawke's Bay, ringed by vineyards, green countryside, and mountain views over the Ngaruroro River. With only two suites, the hosts can actually shape your stay around you, right down to daily menus built from the farm and orchard out back. The lodge can be taken over entirely, which rather explains the clientele.

A locked gate, several kilometers of gravel through old-growth forest, and then the lodge appears from the trees without warning. Treetops is a 2,500-acre estate stay in the American hunting lodge tradition, heavy timber and stone, holding just 36 guests. Forty-seven miles of trails, a hidden waterfall, archery, trout fishing, and two hot tubs in the bush fill the days. The kitchen cooks from whatever the estate turns up.

Nine rooms in the New Zealand countryside, where the chef-owner grows, forages, and cooks what surrounds the property. This is a stay-and-eat destination: a rural homestead with contemporary-rustic rooms, most with verandah views over gardens and open land. The kitchen leans hard into estate-to-plate tasting menus, and regular winemaker dinners mean the cellar gets as much attention as the stove. The Michelin Guide has selected it.

Seven suites, twelve hectares of botanical gardens, daffodil fields, and wild woodland, and somewhere in there a Victorian manor that a New Zealand politician built for himself back when politicians apparently lived like this. It's an all-inclusive lodge just outside Christchurch, with stained glass, wood-burning fireplaces, and grounds that take a while to walk. Small enough that you'll know everyone at dinner whether you intended to or not.
