  4. A solo chef running every aspect of a dozen-seat Turkish restaurant in DTLA is either a romantic gesture or a logistical nightmare, and here it reads as both. Order at the kiosk, find a stool at a white wood table under a ceiling of warm wood and hanging greenery, and settle in for Anatolian cooking that has fine-dining technique somewhere in its past but no interest in showing off about it. The Michelin Guide has it selected.

  10. A modernist former motor lodge in North Hollywood that leaned into its past instead of apologizing for it, the Garland kept the grasscloth wallpaper, wood paneling, and stone fireplace, then painted the gym retro orange for good measure. Rooms have private balconies, and the hotel is dog-friendly in a way that goes beyond a shrug, with toys and bowls waiting on arrival. The Michelin Guide includes it in its selected hotels.

  13. Rank 223. Truly Pizza

    American Artisan Pizzeria

An all-outdoor pizza shop spread across terraced levels in Dana Point, with citrus trees close enough to brush your shoulder and a window cut into the kitchen so you can watch the wood-fired ovens do their thing. Two styles of pizza, round and square, both with serious crust credentials, plus salads and sandwiches for anyone dragged here involuntarily. It landed at number four on 50 Top Pizza USA, which is a fairly loud argument made quietly.

  16. Coca-Cola glazed pork belly and Doritos-dusted chilaquiles set the tone at this taco-forward Mexican restaurant in Cerritos, where the chef brings a fine-dining background to handmade tortillas and spicy salsas. The menu leans into LA's Mexican-American hybrid instincts, with truffle accents sitting comfortably beside beer-battered cod. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a spot on the LA Times taco list.

  19. The chicharron, crispy pork belly in garlic mojo, is the dish that people apparently plan their week around. This is a Mexican restaurant from chef Ray Garcia, running a compact menu of bold, nostalgic cooking that skews contemporary without making a show of it. The room fills fast, so reservations are not optional. Start with the aguachile negro and work your way forward; skipping anything tends to feel like a mistake in hindsight.

  34. Handmade flour tortillas and hand-pressed masa are the foundation at this Mexican gastropub in downtown Santa Ana, where a post-pandemic reset trimmed the menu down to tacos, quekas, and churros and made each one count. The Bib Gourmand reflects that focus. Grilled tomato and dried chili salsa ties the tacos together; habanero salsa does the same for the quekas. Happy hour makes running the whole short list an easy call.

  35. Rank 316. Macheen

    Mexican

Housemade corn tortillas are the baseline here, warm and soft, and everything else is a riff on the form that lands somewhere between street food and genuine curiosity. Macheen is a taqueria operating as a pop-up, rotating through Boyle Heights and Smorgasburg, with a menu that might pile daikon pickles and grilled rib-eye onto one taco and sweet smoky beets al pastor onto another. The New York Times put it on their 25 best L.A. restaurants list, which tracks.

  51. Swan Lake has actual swans, and the terrace wraps around it at the kind of angle that makes dinner feel like a film set. This is a hotel dining room, but one where the garden earns its keep, not just its Instagram. The Mediterranean menu leans into good produce and clean flavors, from tuna tartare with ponzu to Colorado lamb, and the patisserie cart has a way of extending the evening longer than planned.

  52. Full kitchens, in-unit laundry, and Bulgari bath products make this extended-stay property in Beverly Hills feel less like roughing it and more like subletting someone's very tasteful second apartment. The 88 suites and townhouses run sleek and modern throughout, with room service arriving from the adjacent Spago when cooking feels like too much. A landscaped terrace with fire pits and views toward the Hollywood Hills keeps things social. A seven-night minimum applies.

  60. Corrugated metal walls, open air, and a menu that fits on one page: this rustic Mexican spot in Lincoln Heights runs on stewed meats and soulful broths. The carne en su jugo, a tomatillo and bacon beef soup with pinto beans, is what keeps the regulars coming back, though the birria en consommé gives it a run. Tortillas are made in-house. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the small staff acts like they already know you.

  62. Rank 355. Chifa

    Chinese fusion Peruvian

Chifa is the word for the Chinese-Peruvian culinary collision that took root in Lima generations ago, and this Eagle Rock restaurant leans into the mashup with zebra-print walls and zero apology. The menu pulls from family recipes and runs short on purpose, so each dish earns its place. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a room where the food punches well above the price.

  63. Rank 355. Colapasta

    Modern Italian

A pasta station sits front and center at this modern trattoria a few blocks from the Pacific, so you can watch the dough come together before it arrives at your table. The menu is short and focused, running through a soup of the day, a handful of antipasti, and handmade pastas that are the clear reason to be here. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a room that feels neighborly but cooks with real seriousness.

  67. Rank 355. Dai Ho

    Taiwanese

Doors open at 11:30 and close a few hours later, which tells you everything: this small Taiwanese restaurant in Temple City operates on its own terms, and the lines that form before opening tell you the neighborhood is fine with that. The menu hangs above the cash register, so you read it standing up. Tea arrives in a Styrofoam cup without asking. Expect to be out in twenty minutes, holding a Michelin Bib Gourmand memory.

  68. Rank 355. DAMA

    Tropical Latin American

Wicker fans spin overhead, leather sofas line the walls, and colorful tile covers the floor in what amounts to a fantasy of old Havana in downtown Los Angeles. DAMA is a full-service Latin American restaurant where the tropical cocktails at the central bar are keeping pace with the kitchen, and the front patio is dense with greenery. The menu runs from aguachile to lamb chops to paella meant for sharing.

  69. The draw at this Koreatown restaurant is a whole duck roasted in a clay pot, stuffed with chestnuts, sweet potato, rice, and herbs, and it requires a day's notice, which is either a dealbreaker or the first sign you're dealing with something serious. The bird arrives bronzed and carved tableside. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, it's the kind of place that rewards anyone willing to plan ahead and bring a group to share the thing properly.

    Authentic Taiwanese

Tucked into the back of a Rowland Heights strip mall stacked floor-to-ceiling with restaurants, this Taiwanese spot is the kind of place you almost drive past three times before finding. Inside, the warehouse floors and generously spaced tables make it unusually calm for a menu that reads like a small novel, packed with seafood, consommés, and rice dishes. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and regulars tend to already know what they're ordering before they sit down.

    Sourdough Pizzeria

The wood-fired oven is the room's center of gravity at this hip Echo Park pizzeria, where the thin, crispy sourdough crust is built on natural fermentation and topped with serious ingredients. Pickled vegetables and fermented drinks like tepache keep the kitchen's obsessions consistent. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of spot where you'll feel bad for ignoring the salads, then order another slice anyway.

  80. Rank 355. Ipoh Kopitiam

    Malaysian

The line outside this small Malaysian café in Alhambra is the first thing you notice, and it doesn't thin out much once you're in. The menu is short and focused on classics: Hainanese chicken, curry with roti canai, kaya toast. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which feels about right for a neighborhood spot where the takeout tickets never stop piling up. Come with patience and without a reservation, because neither option exists.

  81. Rank 355. Jon & Vinny's

    Easygoing Italian-American Café

Skylights flood the slender dining room here, which helps explain why Fairfax regulars have been packing it since forever. Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo run this easygoing Italian-American cafe built around a long counter and a wood-fired oven that handles both pizzas and pasta with equal confidence. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the servers move like they know it. Expect lightly charred pies and house-made pasta in a room that never feels like it's trying too hard.

    The awards

  82. Rank 355. Lao Xi Noodle House

    Shanxi Noodle Shop

The menu at this tiny Arcadia noodle shop is short by design, because the kitchen is doing exactly one thing: Shanxi-style hand-pulled noodles, springy and chewy in a way that dried pasta simply isn't. The pork belly and fermented soy number has regulars arguing over what to call it. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, cash-and-carry energy, and a strip mall address that filters out anyone not paying attention.

    The awards

  83. Rank 355. Lapaba

    Italian

A pasta bar in Koreatown where the menu reads like a thought experiment: what if Italy and Korea had sorted things out earlier? Husband-and-wife chefs run a tight, dimly lit room with bar seating wrapping the space, the kind of setup that makes a solo dinner feel intentional rather than sad. The Korean-Italian mash-ups go all the way through to dessert, so order broadly and let the table sort out the overlaps.

  85. A seafood-focused breakfast and lunch spot sharing space with a mini market in Echo Park, Little Fish earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for food that punches well above its casual footprint. The signature fried fish sandwich, beer-battered Pacific striped bass with American cheese and kewpie mayo on a potato bun, is the kind of thing you'll think about on the drive home. Broccoli rabe skeptics and fish avoiders are looked after too.

    The awards

  86. Rank 355. Little Fish Melrose Hill

    Californian Seafood

A seafood restaurant where the fried fish sandwich at lunch is reason enough to show up, with clean batter, juicy fish, and the kind of balance that makes most sandwich shops look sloppy. This Melrose Ave sit-down spot is the newer sibling of an Echo Park original, keeping the same focus on sustainably sourced fish and California produce. The room is bright, the wines lean natural, and the service knows what it's doing.

    Cantonese Noodle Shop

The parking lot fills fast and the wait on weekends is real, but this Cantonese noodle shop in Rosemead moves its crowd along with the confidence of a place that has never needed dim sum carts to draw a line. Everything arrives hot and carefully seasoned, from steamed buns packed with char siu to rice noodle rolls that most tables order twice. 88. No carts circle the dining room at this Alhambra dim sum house, which tells you something about how seriously the kitchen takes the whole operation. Orders come by menu, servers move fast, and the lobster noodle roll arrives on a platter dressed with the shell itself, a small piece of theater that gets noticed across the room. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, and the crowd on a weekend morning is exactly what you'd expect.

  89. A sign-in sheet on the sidewalk is your first clue that this strip-mall dumpling shop in Monrovia runs on its own terms. The menu is short, roughly half of it devoted to the namesake specialty, and the kitchen makes everything fresh each morning rather than pulling from a freezer. The pan-fried options tend to disappear fastest. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which explains the lines without quite preparing you for them.

    Pizzeria

A pizza spot in the Arts District where the menu is short and the crust does most of the talking, thin and crisp through the middle with edges that puff up just right. The toppings lean refined without getting precious, and the single dessert, a soft serve that rotates through flavors like tiramisu, keeps things honest. Joshua Skenes is behind it, and the cocktails are stronger than you'd expect from a slice operation. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand.

  91. Tin ceilings, tiled walls, and tall mirrors give this osteria on South Broadway the bones of a classic Roman trattoria, which is exactly what it's going for. Handmade pasta is the main event, with a rotating cast of shapes and tomato-based sauces that keeps the regulars from ever opening the menu properly. 92. Every room faces the ocean at this slim, swanky boutique hotel wedged between the Pacific Coast Highway and what the locals call Billionaire's Beach. Pale wood paneling, slate-bordered fireplaces, and custom white oak furniture keep things quietly serious, while the bathrooms go full futuristic with remote-controlled Toto toilets. Staff attend the beach chaises, and the waterfront terrace runs from morning avocado toast to late-night espresso martinis without ever dropping the mood.

  93. Rank 355. Mario's Butcher Shop

    High-End Sandwich Shop

A strip-mall butcher shop and deli in Newport Beach where the pastrami is cured in-house and the beef for the smash burger gets ground the same day. The Italian sub runs through Genoa, coppa, and soppressata, and the rotating specials board keeps things interesting. Regulars who already know their order fill the counter fast. Cheese, charcuterie, and house-made salads line the cases for the road.

  94. Rank 355. Mariscos Jalisco

    Seafood Mexican

The signature fried shrimp taco has a shell that shatters like tempura, which tells you most of what you need to know about this Jalisco-style mariscos shop in Pomona. The menu is short: tostadas loaded with lime-forward ceviche and that taco, nothing more. Raul Ortega started with a truck in Boyle Heights and the city never really let go. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand. First-timers order one; everyone else orders a plate.

  95. Rank 355. Matū

    Wagyu Steakhouse

The name comes from a Māori word, and the New Zealand Wagyu arrives wood-fired, which tells you something about the seriousness of the sourcing before you even sit down. This is a Beverly Hills steakhouse with exposed brick, brass fixtures, and an open kitchen, but the vibe runs warmer and more romantic than the category usually suggests. Wagyu here lands at prices that don't require a quiet moment with your bank app afterward.

  96. Sixteen rooms on Carbon Beach, all teak, all facing the Pacific, and a rate that ensures the other guests are probably not stressing about it. Nobu Ryokan is a boutique hotel modeled on a traditional Japanese inn, which means the design is spare, the pace is slow, and the whole point is that nobody can easily find you. Chef Nobu Matsuhisa's other properties thrive on being seen; this one is structured around the opposite instinct.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
