The Best Places in New York

All, change section
  1. The pissaladière, a warm round loaf piled with anchovies and caramelized onions, got a callout from the New York Times, which tells you this Prospect Heights all-day cafe is operating above its pay grade. Coffee and breakfast sandwiches up front give way to a skylit atrium with a small bar, handmade pasta, and refined small plates that shift toward a proper dinner by evening. It reads casual; the cooking quietly disagrees.

  3. Rank 690. Ciao, Gloria

    Contemporary Italian Coffee Shop

The pastry case alone could hold up a line: Italian-style cakes, seasonal danishes, oatmeal cream pies, all housemade. This contemporary Italian coffee shop sits at street level of a Frank Gehry condo on Vanderbilt, which sounds like a setup for a joke, but the place is genuinely warm and busy for good reason. Sweetleaf coffee from Queens, a full kitchen running health-ish and comfort food, and staff who seem to actually mean it when they want you to feel at home.

  4. Rank 690. Çka Ka Qëllu

    Eastern European

Glass cases of embroidered regional dress line the walls of this Albanian restaurant on Arthur Avenue, next to the old retail market, where the food runs to burek and cabbage rolls stuffed with ground veal. The Bronx's Albanian community has been quietly growing for decades, and this is where it eats. The menu is the comforting, filling kind, and the brumat sampler is a reasonable place to start if you've never eaten Albanian before.

  8. The xiao long bao are made in-house, and you can watch through the glass as the pleating happens at speed. This is the New York outpost of the global dumpling chain, set in a large underground room near Times Square that runs loud and packed most hours of the day. The New York Times gave it a star in 2024, which did nothing to shorten the line. Expect a menu of soup dumplings in various fillings, a youthful crowd, and prices that won't require a moment of hesitation.

  10. Rank 690. Eulalie

    French

You book by phone, get buzzed through the door, and receive a handwritten menu, which either sounds precious or exactly right depending on your mood. Eulalie is a cozy, French-leaning prix-fixe spot in Tribeca where the formality is purely theatrical, the cooking is warm and assured, and the Named by the Times one of New York's best new restaurants in 2024, it feels less like a debut than a place that's been waiting for you to find it.

  18. Rank 690. Hart's

    Mediterranean

A skylight, whitewashed brick, and a marble counter with sightlines into a kitchen barely big enough to turn around in, and yet the food coming out of it reads much larger than the room. Hart's is a snug Mediterranean restaurant tucked behind the Franklin Avenue subway stairs, serving the kind of cooking that makes you wonder why anyone needs a big kitchen. The slate-blue façade is easy to miss, which is part of the charm.

Murals, sculptures, and flags cover every surface floor to ceiling, so you've found the place before you've read the sign. Lakruwana is a Sri Lankan restaurant on Staten Island where street food drives the menu, the room runs loud and colorful, and the owner works every table like it's a reunion. The New York Times put it on their 100 Best Restaurants in New York City list, which tracks for a room this unignorable.

  25. The gleaming open kitchen is the first thing you see, all stainless steel and quiet drama, before the eight-course French tasting menu even begins. It started as an underground dinner party circuit, which explains the intimate feel that downtown Brooklyn's fancier arrivals don't quite manage. The team walks you through wine pairings course by course. An AAA Four Diamond restaurant, and the room takes that seriously without making you feel graded.

  29. Rank 690. NARO

    Korean

The name comes from South Korea's first carrier rocket, which tells you something about the ambitions in the room. Naro is a fine dining Korean restaurant in Rockefeller Center from the team behind Atomix, and where that room chases reinvention, this one returns to classics. The New York Times gave it three stars. Order the Dongji Martini, which made Esquire's list of the best martinis in the country, and let the evening unfold slowly.

  30. The picture window looks out on a community garden at 9th and Avenue C, and that's about as decorative as this coffee shop gets. Ninth Street Espresso has been a purist espresso spot in Alphabet City since what feels like the dawn of specialty coffee, roasting its own beans out in Long Island City and keeping the menu ruthlessly short. A cookie, a vegan mini-loaf, a bench out front if the weather allows.

  32. The carriage house bones are the whole point: a fireplace center stage in winter, and windows that swing open onto a cobblestoned side street in summer, letting Barrow Street essentially become part of the room. This is a fine dining institution that New Yorkers bring people to when they want the city to do the heavy lifting, which it does without much trouble. The kind of place that makes a Tuesday feel like an occasion.

  39. The mission here is explicit: no rainbow bagels, no blueberry bagels, no what Peter Shelsky calls the "shiksa bagel." This Park Slope bagel shop makes small, crust-forward rounds in the New York tradition, though the Sichuan peppercorn bagel, a nod to the long Jewish-Chinese-food alliance, bends the rules just enough. The New York Times named it among the city's best, which is the only endorsement that really matters in this particular argument.

  40. Rank 690. Suited

    Thoughtful Coffee

Concrete floors, black accent walls, and two arc-shaped bars make this FiDi coffee shop feel like it wandered in from Brooklyn and decided to stay. A multi-roaster menu pulls from a rotating cast of serious names, and the espresso machine moonlights for by-the-cup drip. There's a small food menu, housemade pastries, and, naturally, wine. Laptop seating is deliberately scarce, which says everything about what the room is for.

  44. Rank 690. Yafa Cafe

    Coffee

Yafa is a Yemeni coffee shop on 4th Avenue in Sunset Park, brick walls hung with art and books celebrating Arabic culture on one side and proper third-wave gear on the other. The menu roams past the usual coffee shop lane into slow-cooked lamb and za'atar fries, with a pistachio cappuccino with cardamom for anyone who still wants something to sip. A second location has opened in Downtown Brooklyn, but this is the flagship.

  45. Rank 690. Zimmi's

    French

The madeleines come out warm, baked to order, gilded nearly brown at the edges, and the Times critic named them among her favorite dishes of the year without mentioning Proust once, which takes restraint. Zimmi's is a rustic Southern French bistro on Bedford Street, the kind of place that makes butter-and-lemon sponge cake feel like an event without making a production of it. West Village regulars fill the room early.

  47. Rank 748. Cafe Katja

    Austrian

  48. A Peruvian ceviche shop tucked just under the elevated train tracks in Richmond Hill, earning a Michelin Bib Gourmand without much fuss about its location. Tree stumps with cushions serve as patio seating, and Latin music hits you at the door. The leche de tigre arrives in a martini glass with octopus, scallops, and shrimp, and the pork tamal, steamed in bamboo, makes a quiet case for itself from the corner of the menu.

  49. The line out the door in Sunset Park is a reliable fixture regardless of weather. This Sichuan restaurant holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and packs its two floors with backless stools and no-frills wooden tables, which keeps the focus on the food. The kitchen goes lighter on the chili oil than you'd expect, coaxing complex flavors rather than just heat. Staff with earpieces navigate the room efficiently and are happy to guide first-timers through the menu.

  52. The sea-blue tiled wall and intricate woodwork make this Upper West Side Indian restaurant feel like a deliberate escape from 72nd Street. The menu runs from snacks through sharing plates to mains, and the name doubles as a standing order: get a kebab. Finely minced baby goat formed around a skewer arrives with the thread unspooled tableside, which is either theatrical or deeply practical, possibly both.

A small pierogi shop tucked into Greenpoint, the part of Brooklyn that still feels like it never left Warsaw. Bolesławiec pottery doubles as the serveware, which is either charming or showing off depending on your mood. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a shot of Polish liquor is basically required.

  58. A fish tail peeking out of a metal pot at the next table sets the tone at this no-frills Filipino homestyle spot in Woodside's Little Manila. The kitchen has been around forever, and the cooking skips any fuss: eggplant sealed in pork-threaded omelet, ginger-bright chicken soup, and chicken adobo that The Infatuation called one of New York's defining dishes. 61. Rank 748. Temple Bar

    Italian Cocktail Bar

Oak paneling, cherrywood bar, velvet seating, heavy curtains: Temple Bar is a cocktail bar that looks like the lounge of a grand hotel, minus the fusty clientele. The crowd skews professional and thirty-something, the lighting is low, and the drinks lean classic with an Italian tilt. A Sgroppino sits alongside a Ward Eight and an Espresso Martini, which is a menu that knows its history without being smug about it.

  62. The honey cardamom toast alone sends a signal about where the Noortwyck's head is at. This West Village neighborhood restaurant comes from Eleven Madison Park alums, and the menu moves between oysters and cinnamon rolls without blinking. The New York Times gave it two stars. Service has that unhurried quality that makes you feel less like a table and more like a regular, even on your first visit.

  63. Rank 748. The Raines Law Room

    Intimate Speakeasy

You ring an unmarked bell on an unmarked door below street level, and that's the whole game announced before you've ordered a drink. Inside, this cocktail bar in Chelsea is all deep armchairs, shaded lamps, a fireplace, and curtained alcoves fitted with a buzzer to summon your server when you're ready. It's a speakeasy setup done without irony, and the room is quiet enough that people actually talk to each other.

  64. A boutique hotel in SoHo where the design story matters as much as the thread count. The team behind it worked with Danish studio Space Copenhagen to land somewhere between spare and warm, a look closer to Copenhagen than to the gilded-lobby tradition of New York luxury. They call their approach "conscious hospitality," which translates to charitable revenue-sharing rather than just a recycling card on your pillow. Quiet, considered, and not trying to impress anyone who needs impressing.

  65. The modest exterior on a quiet West Village street gives almost nothing away, which is apparently the point. Inside, 4 Charles Prime Rib is an intimate, old-school steakhouse with deep leather booths and staff who seem to know your name by the second drink. The prime rib comes three ways, the creamed spinach is non-negotiable, and the Valrhona chocolate pie in an Oreo crust lands like a closing argument.

  72. The second-floor dining room on Avenue A reads like a very chic treehouse, all intimacy and low light. This vegan restaurant in the East Village brings a real polish to plant-based cooking, with dishes assembled like small arguments for taking the cuisine seriously. Simple wood furniture, art by Bard students, and a George Washington Bar downstairs that stays classic without trying too hard.

The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
