The best restaurants in Oakland, according to the experts: AAA, Michelin Guide, and James Beard Awards have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Commis comes out on top.

More Less

Burdell and Sun Moon Studio hold the next two places. San Francisco Chronicle shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Michelin Guide next.

  1. James Syhabout's two-Michelin-star tasting menu restaurant on Piedmont Avenue runs calm and unhurried, which is its own kind of trick on a street that packed. The room is long and spare, servers wear ties and crumb your table, and the food draws quietly on his Thai and Chinese heritage without announcing it. That slow-poached egg yolk has become a regular's religion. Cool and relaxed, but never, as the room itself seems to know, actually casual.

  2. A gallery wall of staff family portraits lines the interior, and a lime green bar anchors the room where church pews run along the walls. Named for the chef's grandmother, this Temescal soul food restaurant riffs on tradition with genuine curiosity: collards seasoned with berbere, fried chicken brined with pickle juice, a wine list that quietly suggests champagne as the correct pairing. Food & Wine named it Restaurant of the Year in 2024.

  3. Two chefs, twelve seats, and a nondescript door in a West Oakland industrial block that gives nothing away. Sun Moon Studio is a tasting menu restaurant run entirely by Sarah Cooper and Alan Hsu, no brigade, just the two of them, and the Michelin star on the wall suggests that arrangement works out fine. The menu tracks California seasons closely, and Cooper's baked goods, including savory egg tarts and steamed brioche buns, earn particular attention. Reservations are a project.

  4. Pupusas made with heirloom corn, stuffed with seasonal produce, and cooked over a wood flame set the tone at this live-fire restaurant in Old Oakland, where the menu moves between Salvadoran and Mexican traditions. The New York Times called out the guacamole with tortillas brushed in asiento, pork lard left over from making chicharrón. Bon Appétit named it one of America's best new restaurants, and the San Francisco Chronicle ranks it among the Bay Area's top ten.

  5. A former fire station in Oakland's Dimond District, Bombera earns its name twice over: "firewoman" in Spanish, and the wood-fired oven at its heart burns corn husks whose ash goes straight into the masa. It's a contemporary Mexican restaurant where the tortillas are nixtamalized in-house and the moles are layered enough to make you stop mid-sentence. The Michelin Bib Gourmand and a spot on the L.A. Times' California 101 follow naturally from that kind of seriousness.

  6. Dark green ceiling, brass chandeliers, and live plants spilling overhead set the scene at this chic little prix-fixe spot near Lake Merritt. The deal is a three-course Italian dinner, two choices per course, no reservations. House-made pasta with a slow-braised tomato sugo is the constant around which everything else rotates. The wine list leans interesting and uses symbols so you don't need a sommelier. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  7. Rank 7. Belotti

    Piedmontese

Regulars who speak Italian with the owner and never bother with the menu fill the bar at this cozy Rockridge enoteca. The kitchen leans into Piemonte, which means brasato over polenta and house-made pastas that are the main event. The tortino, a spinach flan with egg yolk and truffle, is the kind of quiet overachiever that makes you ignore everything else you ordered.

  8. Rank 8. Barcote

    Traditional Ethiopian

On Telegraph Avenue's stretch of Ethiopian spots, Barcote holds its own with a menu that leans hard into layered spice work, the kind where berbere and mitmita do real work rather than decoration. It's a traditional Ethiopian restaurant, injera and communal platters, warm service, and a tree-shaded patio that slows everything down nicely. Come with time to spare and people to share with, because rushing through a spread this generous would be a waste.

  9. Drunken noodles with smoky barbecue brisket is not what the cookbook intended, and that's precisely the point at this Laurel District Thai restaurant. The kitchen plays fast and loose with tradition, seasoning a pork burger to taste like laab and calibrating heat levels for anyone who thinks "medium" is already pushing it. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, with cocktails that pull their weight alongside the food.

  10. Rank 10. Lovely’s

    American

A smashburger shop built into a shipping container alongside Two Pitchers Brewing Co., Lovely's has a menu that reads like a love letter to drive-through nostalgia. Picnic tables and string lights fill the dog-friendly outdoor space. The fried onion burger, a riff on the Oklahoma classic George Motz made famous, cooks the patty right into thinly sliced onions so the beef fat goes everywhere it should.

  11. Rank 10. Sfizio

    Italian

Counter-service pasta shop in Rockridge where everything on the menu costs less than a glass of wine at the place next door. You order at the register, grab a seat inside or out, and wait for housemade pasta that tracks the seasons, except for the spaghetti, which stays put year-round because nobody has complained. The Sfizio cocktail, amaro with tonic and lime, is a good reason not to order water.

  12. Rank 10. Shan Dong

    Chinese

The handmade dumplings and rope-thick noodles in sesame paste have kept this Northern Chinese restaurant an anchor of Oakland's Chinatown for what feels like forever. The room is utilitarian in the best sense: Lazy Susans, communal tables, and staff who will seat you next to strangers when the place fills up, which it does. Order something chewy and don't expect to spend much.

  13. Rank 10. World Famous Hotboys

    Nashville Southern

A hot chicken shop that started as a popup and grew into an East Bay institution with a '90s aesthetic that nobody asked them to drop. The bone-in and the sandwiches are the move, and the heat scale is honest, meaning medium is a real warning and anything above it is a commitment. Complimentary comeback sauce arrives ready to talk you off the ledge. Nashville-style fried chicken done without ceremony.

  14. Burmese food with a California conscience in a Temescal cafe where the tea leaf salads arrive with kale and golden roti bread disappears fast. The lunch specials are a particular draw, a hot entree and a fresh salad for a price that makes you feel like you've gotten away with something. Bright, airy, wooden beams overhead. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks: the portions are generous and nothing on the menu feels fussy.

  15. Rank 14. Vientian Cafe

    Vietnamese

  16. Rank 16. Shawarmaji

    Middle Eastern

Vertical spits of peppery, marinated meat looming behind the counter set the tone at this dark, industrial counter-service spot in Oakland. The shawarma comes wrapped in flour tortillas with a fierce, garlicky toum that means business. Named one of Esquire's Best New Restaurants in America, Shawarmaji has quietly shifted what Bay Area diners expect from a wrap. Order the chicken and ask for extra toum; you will not regret it.

  17. Plastic tablecloths in bright, clashing colors cover the picnic tables at this casual Thai spot on Telegraph, where the vibe reads roadside Bangkok and the food backs it up. Northeastern specialties anchor the menu, including grilled meats and green papaya somtum in Thai or Lao style. The kitchen takes spice requests seriously, so having a cold Singha within reach is less optional than it sounds. The mango sticky rice at the end is the kind of thing you eat slowly.

  18. Rank 18. Chuan Yu

    Sichuan

A wall of bottles greets you before the menu does at this Sichuan restaurant on the second floor of Pacific Renaissance Plaza, where the room runs plain white booths on one side, black tables down the middle. The classics are all here, portions run large, and the kind of heat that leaves your lips tingling is reliably on offer. Service can drift, but the mapo tofu tends to restore goodwill fast. Bring someone to share with.

    The awards

  19. Rank 18. Ok's Deli

    Vietnamese

A pint-sized deli on Telegraph where a fine-dining pedigree gets quietly redirected into sandwiches. The fried chicken, dusted in Sichuan peppercorns and Korean chile flakes, is the one that put this place on the map, but the sisig bolillo, fatty pork head in a crisp bubbly roll, makes a strong case for staying longer. The menu shifts with the season, so cold days bring hotter sandwiches. The San Francisco Chronicle put it at number 30 in the Bay Area.

  20. The patacones and arepas keep things recognizably Colombian, but then a labneh dip shows up alongside yuca buñuelos and the tahini slips into the leche de tigre, and you realize the kitchen is tracing the country's full range of African and Lebanese influences. This Oakland restaurant runs loud, with a playlist and colorful room to match, but the service stays warm and the food stays sharp. Not a quiet Tuesday kind of spot.

  21. The owner also runs a stone-fruit orchard that's been a fixture at Bay Area farmers' markets forever, so when Pomet lists its farm suppliers, one of them is hers. This Piedmont Avenue fine dining spot leans hard into the ingredient, letting good produce do the talking through a New American menu that shifts with the season. Dinner ends with a complimentary slice of whatever fruit is at its peak, which is either charming or a flex depending on your mood.

    The awards

  22. Rank 24. 3 Bottled Fish

    Vietnamese

The menu changes every week at this small Vietnamese deli in Oakland's Fruitvale neighborhood, which keeps regulars coming back to see what chef Paulette Tran is up to. Banh mi are a constant, stuffed differently each time, and a beef rice porridge with ginger and green onions turns up often enough to be considered a regular. The room has plants, local embroidery, and a TV looping Vietnamese street vendors on infinite repeat.

  23. A family-run taqueria that operates out of an actual home and specializes in tacos al vapor, steamed beef head tacos in five cuts, from cachete to the gloriously fatty labio. The consomé, simmered from cow skull, arrives velvety and shimmering and pulls double duty as a dipper or a hangover cure. Weekend mornings bring goat birria and menudo. Cash, counter service, no fuss.

  24. Rank 24. Mägo

    Peruvian

The dining room is painted red, yellow, and blue, Colombia's flag colors, which tells you something about what's coming. Mägo is a fine dining tasting menu spot in Oakland where the vibe skews deceptively loose, Latin pop drifts through the room, and the cooking traces the chef's Colombian roots through arepas, fried yuca, and corn pancakes, all finished over a wood-burning hearth with a steering-wheel crank. Pretension-free tasting menus are rarer than they should be.

  25. Carnitas by the pound, sold on weekends only from a weekend-only stand beside the railroad tracks in East Oakland. The Morales family runs this outdoor operation Saturdays and Sundays, and the lines snake long enough that selling out is routine rather than a surprise. A few communal tables let you eat on the spot, or you can take it all home. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's best tacos and best Mexican restaurants. Get there early.

  26. Rank 27. Cenaduria Elvira

    Traditional Mexican

A cenaduria is a Mexican dinner spot built around comfort food, and this East Oakland home restaurant does exactly that, anchored by tostadas raspadas, thin bubbly planks of fried corn piled with meat, cabbage, crumbled cheese, and a sizzling salsa roja. Pozole, tacos dorados, enchiladas, and tortas ahogadas drowned in tomato sauce fill out the menu. The San Francisco Chronicle has called it one of the best Mexican restaurants in the Bay Area.

  28. James Syhabout of Commis runs this casual Thai-inflected counter spot in Temescal, where the menu swings between a spicy chicken sandwich lacquered in Thai chile oil and garlic noodles that somehow taste like a Bay Area institution. The cooking splits the difference between street food and comfort food, and it does so without making a big deal about it. Cash-friendly prices, a busy room, and nothing on the menu that needs a long explanation.

  29. The sugar-crusted barbecue buns have a following serious enough to cause shortages. Ming's Tasty is a no-frills dim sum shop in Oakland's Chinatown, the kind where takeout orders go out the door in stacks and the breakfast and lunch crowds spill onto the sidewalk. The fried shrimp balls are famously frilly and bouncy, the siu mai lands every time, and the line, when there is one, moves faster than you'd expect.

  30. Rank 32. Aburaya

    Japanese

The logo is a Ramones seal riff, and the walls are buried in band stickers and prints, so the vibe is established before you order. Aburaya is a karaage shop in Oakland's Temescal that goes deep on one thing: thick boneless thighs marinated in shio-koji, dredged in potato starch for a crunch that actually holds. The seasonings and dipping sauces, garlic miso powder, sansho pepper, miso ranch, are where the kitchen puts its personality.

  31. Near Lake Merritt, Enssaro is a roomy Ethiopian restaurant that covers the full range, from slow-cooked lamb in berbere and ghee to kitfo rolls that wrap spiced beef tartar inside spirals of injera. The menu is mostly traditional, but it takes the occasional contemporary detour, Ethiopian nachos among them. A spiced, sweetened tea, hot or iced, is the move if the heat builds up.

  32. Rank 32. Mela Bistro

    Ethiopian

Tuna kitfo is the order that sets this Ethiopian bistro apart, raw minced fish in place of the usual beef, melting in a way that earns the detour to Uptown Oakland. The vegetarian platter covers the classics well, and if you make it to dessert, the teff chocolate cake is a quietly clever use of injera's starring grain. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's best Ethiopian spots, which tracks.

  33. The fried oyster mushrooms arrive tempura-crisp and somehow juicy underneath, which is the kind of thing that makes you stop mid-sentence. Millennium is a full-service vegan restaurant in Oakland's Rockridge neighborhood, been around forever, and still the kind of place where the menu takes real technique seriously rather than just swapping out the meat. A la carte most nights, prix fixe on weekends.

  34. Every weekend, a sprawling outdoor food market assembles near the Oakland Flea Market, and the density of good options is almost unfair. A towering al pastor trompo gets shaved to order, while a stand called Las Cazuelas works through a rotation of clay-pot guisados that taste like someone's grandmother is running the operation. Carnitas, chicharron by the pound, stuffed gorditas. Bring cash, bring an appetite, and resist the urge to commit to a plan.

  35. A Guatemalan street food stand on International Boulevard in Fruitvale, where thin-coated fried chicken goes into the fryer after you order it, and the fries come out zigzagged with mayo, ketchup, and Picamas, a tangy green salsa. The crowd reflects the neighborhood's Guatemalan community, and the San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's top fried chicken spots. Bring cash.

  36. The handmade corn tortillas here taste like an actual ear of corn decided to become a taco, and they're sturdy enough to hold the juiciest fillings without folding on you. This taqueria sits near Lake Merritt, which makes eating outside feel less like a picnic and more like a civic event. Classic fillings, snappy carrot pickles, and carnitas that manage to be both chewy and crisp, from a team that grew up in East Oakland taco royalty.

  37. A halal market in West Oakland where the grocery aisles give way to a dining room out back serving pita sandwiches, mixed grill plates, and a rotating spread of Yemeni specialties. The saltah, a lamb and fenugreek soup served in a stone bowl, arrives bubbling and practically orders the flatbread for you. Stock your pantry, grab lunch, or do both, which most people here seem to be doing.

  38. A cart outside a Cardenas grocery store in East Oakland, where the vendor shouts "Tacos! Tacos de canasta!" loud enough to settle the question of where lunch is. Tacos de canasta are a Mexico City staple rarely spotted in the Bay, and this stand does them straight: steamed basket tacos stuffed with chicharron, pollo con mole, or papas con chorizo, pulled from baskets lined in red picnic cloth, with pickled veggies and a chimichurri aioli that overperform for the price.

  39. Mesquite coals keep the asada lightly charred and the chorizo properly crisp at this Oakland taco truck, and the tortillas are pressed by hand, which changes the math on everything else. The Villa family runs it Tijuana-style, so each taco arrives wrapped in a paper cone with a thick scoop of guacamole. The grilled meats draw the crowd, but the fatty cabeza with salsa verde is what the regulars know to order.

  40. The wheat-fiber "asada" is marinated in beer and smoke until it tastes like a backyard grill, which is a reasonable way to open an argument. This snug Oakland taqueria makes the case that vegan tacos don't need an asterisk, with in-house fillings, mushroom carnitas with real richness, and horchata that holds its own. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best tacos in the Bay Area, vegan or otherwise implied.

  41. Rank 32. Tây Hồ

  42. Illustrated cartoon versions of the kitchen's own ingredients cover the walls at this Isaan Thai spot in Oakland's Dimond District, which sets the tone nicely. The khao soi has a creamy, spicy broth that earns its keep, and the nam khao, fried rice with fermented pork and sharp slivers of ginger, has a crunch you can hear across the table. Grilled salmon wrapped in coconut leaves arrives with a sauce that manages sour, sweet, and spicy all at once without negotiating.

  46. The yeasted waffle is what people come back for at this daytime diner on Macarthur, light enough to make the standard griddle version feel like a practical joke. Sequoia keeps the American breakfast plate honest while also running a loco moco where the gravy soaks into Koda Farms white rice in a way that feels earned. They cure their own pork belly, make three hot sauces in-house, and generally behave like a diner with something to prove.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
