The 25 Best Steakhouses in Spain

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best steakhouses in Spain, according to the experts: the World's 101 Best, the Michelin Guide, and Eater have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Brabo comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Barcelona.

More Less

Arotxa and Bardeni-Caldeni hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the World's 101 Best next.

  1. Rank 1. Brabo

    Steakhouse

The bread arrives first, grilled in a pan over coals and served with smoked butter, and the chefs at this wood-fire steakhouse are the first to admit nobody forgets it. Open flames handle everything from Friesian chuletón to whole fish to seasonal vegetables, and the dry-aged beef programme takes provenance seriously enough to include rare Gascón pigs from France. The room is dim, warm, and close to the kitchen, which is the point.

  2. Rank 2. Arotxa

    Steakhouse

The T-bone arrives grilled over holm oak charcoal, and the smoke does most of the talking. This family-run restaurant in a small Navarrese village has one brother in the kitchen and one working the room, a setup that gives the place a relaxed, lived-in confidence. The dining rooms feel contemporary but not scrubbed of character. Traditional cooking with a light modern touch, and a Michelin Bib Gourmand to show for it.

  4. Rank 4. Bar Néstor

    Steakhouse

A tiny taverna in the Old Town that serves exactly four things: tortilla, tomato salad, padron peppers, and txuleta. The tortilla gets its own mythology, since the owner makes two a day and two only, one for lunch and one for dinner. Show up around eleven to queue with everyone else, state your case when the shutters go up, and hope for the best. Standing room at the bar is the more likely outcome, and nobody seems to mind.

  6. Rank 6. Carnal

    Steakhouse

A wood-fired steakhouse on a pretty Eixample pedestrian street, Carnal brings a Uruguayan sensibility to the Spanish parrilla format. Dry-aged beef from Spain, South America, and Japan goes over oak embers, and the room, all dark tones and warm light around an open kitchen, matches the menu's intensity. The chef's background spans Montevideo and the Basque Country, which lands him somewhere between campfire and precision.

  7. A steakhouse dug into the earth in a small León village, with fire-blackened stone and the kind of silence that makes you lean in. Chef José Gordón sources rare Iberian breeds and handles them with the patience of someone who considers a cow's entire biography. The cecina and the chuleta are the reasons people cross continents. Ranked number one on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, which for once feels less like a prize and more like a geographical fact.

  9. Rank 8. Alameda

    Steakhouse

The ribeye draws diners from across the Rioja, and that pretty much tells you what kind of steakhouse this is. Tucked beside a church in a quiet village square, Alameda is a family-run grill built around the quality of its ingredients, with whole fish and seasonal specials rounding out a menu that doesn't need to show off. Order whatever the kitchen picked up that morning and you'll be fine.

  10. The grill is the centerpiece here, surrounded by a charcuterie section and cuts of Wagyu, Angus, and aged beef that arrive without sides unless you ask for them separately. Aleño Brassafina is the more relaxed ground-floor steakhouse sibling to a Michelin-starred upstairs neighbor, and the whole setup is built for sharing. Order the pickled mussels early and let the table argue over which cut to order next.

  12. Rank 8. Asador de la Reina

    American Steakhouse

Two aging chambers full of maturing beef dominate the bar the moment you walk in, which tells you everything about priorities here. Set inside an old mansion near a campsite on the edge of town, this is a traditional steakhouse where the kitchen runs on olive wood and the chef, known locally as "the crab," keeps the menu squarely focused on grilled red meat. The wine cellar is deep enough that choosing a bottle becomes its own project.

  13. Rank 8. Brunelli's

    Steakhouse

A steakhouse near Loro Parque where the window looks straight out to sea and the meat case does most of the talking. Cuts from Uruguay, Nebraska, Germany, and Spain share the menu, many aged on the premises and sold by weight for two to share. The steak tartare is the house signature, though a T-bone or tomahawk tends to settle any remaining arguments. A family-run spot that carnivores on the island seem to find eventually.

  14. Rank 8. Castillería

    Steakhouse

A glass-fronted kitchen and a terrace that somehow looks like it grew out of the Andalusian countryside set the mood at this rural grill house on the edge of Vejer. The reason to come is beef, catalogued by breed and age the way a serious wine list handles vintages. Pork and lamb show up too, but the whole operation exists for the fire and the cut. Couples tend to make the drive out to Pago de Santa Lucía for this one.

  15. The old O Burgo train station now houses a steakhouse where the real attraction is visible before you order: prime Galician cuts aging behind glass like relics in a shrine. Ribeyes go over charcoal, and the menu keeps its focus narrow on purpose, offering veal, cow, and selected beef at various maturations. A handful of starters round things out, and fish exists if you ask nicely, though that feels somewhat beside the point.

    American Steakhouse

  17. Maturation chambers line the dining room like glass-fronted relics at a natural history museum, which tells you exactly where the priorities lie. This is a steakhouse at heart, with a Colombian-born chef who ranges wide through starters, fish, and rice before landing on the main event: premium cuts of Rubia Gallega, Simmental, and Black Angus, sold by weight. The desserts, including a trompe l'oeil, take a sharp creative turn.

  18. Rank 8. La Oficina

    Modern Steakhouse

A maturation chamber stocked with sea bream and sea bass sits behind the bar of this modern bistro in Ruzafa, which tells you where the kitchen's priorities lie. It's the more relaxed sibling of Fierro, with grilled aged fish and cuts of Galician beef sharing the menu with small bites and market plates. Tasting menus run from grilled fish to grilled meat to a full chef's-choice feed, which they call "we'll feed you."

  19. Dani García's name is on the door, and the room inside the Grand Hyatt Barcelona leans hard into the glamorous urban steakhouse brief: low light, premium cuts aged to specification, and a menu that slides between Japanese-inflected skewers and Catalan croquettes without apology. Grilled Málaga avocado turns up among the vegetables, a DJ turns up some evenings, and a personalized knife is yours to take home if the mood strikes.

  20. Rank 8. Leña Madrid

    Steakhouse

The open grill is the point here, and the smoke announces it before you sit down. Leña Madrid is a steakhouse overseen by Dani García, the Marbella chef who has built a small empire on the idea that fire is enough of a philosophy. Cuts run from ribeye to tomahawk, with aged beef and occasional grilled fish sharing the menu. The room is polished enough that the carnivore-at-heart crowd arrives looking intentional about it.

  23. The historic underground cellars beneath this León steakhouse set the tone before the first plate arrives. José Gordón raises oxen for long lives, dry-ages the beef for depth rather than shock, and finishes everything over wood fire. Tongue, morcilla, and house-cured cecina show the whole animal is taken seriously, not just the headline cut. It ranks tenth on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, and a meal here feels less like dinner than the end of a very long, deliberate argument.

  24. Rank 24. Amaren

    Basque Steakhouse

An open fire grill sits at the center of the room, visible from the dining room, where dry-aged Iberian oxen get the kind of focused, unhurried attention that is almost meditative to watch. This is a Basque steakhouse in central Bilbao, polished but not stiff, rooted in txuleton tradition while the room's clean lines and curved seating push it somewhere more contemporary. It ranked 44th on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list.

  25. Rank 24. Casa Nicolás de Tolosa

    Basque Steakhouse

Thick stone walls and exposed beams frame an open fire that does all the real talking at this Basque steakhouse in a historic Gipuzkoan town. The chuleta, a dry-aged bone-in cut cooked over charcoal and wood, is the point entirely. The team reads heat, humidity, and fat with the kind of quiet confidence that comes from doing one thing for a long time. It ranks among the World's Best Steak Restaurants, which should settle the debate about whether to make the drive.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
