  1. Rank 384. Dai Ho

    Taiwanese

Doors open at 11:30 and close a few hours later, which tells you everything: this small Taiwanese restaurant in Temple City operates on its own terms, and the lines that form before opening tell you the neighborhood is fine with that. The menu hangs above the cash register, so you read it standing up. Tea arrives in a Styrofoam cup without asking. Expect to be out in twenty minutes, holding a Michelin Bib Gourmand memory.

  2. Rank 384. DAMA

    Tropical Latin American

Wicker fans spin overhead, leather sofas line the walls, and colorful tile covers the floor in what amounts to a fantasy of old Havana in downtown Los Angeles. DAMA is a full-service Latin American restaurant where the tropical cocktails at the central bar are keeping pace with the kitchen, and the front patio is dense with greenery. The menu runs from aguachile to lamb chops to paella meant for sharing.

  3. The Standing Room, a subterranean lounge tucked under the Arts District, is the reason to come to this Los Angeles outpost of the New York cocktail institution. Death & Co keeps its speakeasy bones, dark and deliberately moody, while the menu organizes its 25 cocktails by personality rather than spirit, which is either very LA or very useful depending on your mood. Californian wines and global beers round things out for anyone who finds the taxonomy exhausting.

  4. The draw at this Koreatown restaurant is a whole duck roasted in a clay pot, stuffed with chestnuts, sweet potato, rice, and herbs, and it requires a day's notice, which is either a dealbreaker or the first sign you're dealing with something serious. The bird arrives bronzed and carved tableside. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, it's the kind of place that rewards anyone willing to plan ahead and bring a group to share the thing properly.

  6. Rank 384. Eat Joy Food

    Authentic Taiwanese

Tucked into the back of a Rowland Heights strip mall stacked floor-to-ceiling with restaurants, this Taiwanese spot is the kind of place you almost drive past three times before finding. Inside, the warehouse floors and generously spaced tables make it unusually calm for a menu that reads like a small novel, packed with seafood, consommés, and rice dishes. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and regulars tend to already know what they're ordering before they sit down.

  9. Rank 384. Grá

    Sourdough Pizzeria

The wood-fired oven is the room's center of gravity at this hip Echo Park pizzeria, where the thin, crispy sourdough crust is built on natural fermentation and topped with serious ingredients. Pickled vegetables and fermented drinks like tepache keep the kitchen's obsessions consistent. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of spot where you'll feel bad for ignoring the salads, then order another slice anyway.

  15. Rank 384. Ipoh Kopitiam

    Malaysian

The line outside this small Malaysian café in Alhambra is the first thing you notice, and it doesn't thin out much once you're in. The menu is short and focused on classics: Hainanese chicken, curry with roti canai, kaya toast. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which feels about right for a neighborhood spot where the takeout tickets never stop piling up. Come with patience and without a reservation, because neither option exists.

  16. Rank 384. Jon & Vinny's

    Easygoing Italian-American Café

Skylights flood the slender dining room here, which helps explain why Fairfax regulars have been packing it since forever. Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo run this easygoing Italian-American cafe built around a long counter and a wood-fired oven that handles both pizzas and pasta with equal confidence. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the servers move like they know it. Expect lightly charred pies and house-made pasta in a room that never feels like it's trying too hard.

    The awards

  17. Rank 384. Lao Xi Noodle House

    Shanxi Noodle Shop

The menu at this tiny Arcadia noodle shop is short by design, because the kitchen is doing exactly one thing: Shanxi-style hand-pulled noodles, springy and chewy in a way that dried pasta simply isn't. The pork belly and fermented soy number has regulars arguing over what to call it. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, cash-and-carry energy, and a strip mall address that filters out anyone not paying attention.

    The awards

  18. Rank 384. Lapaba

    Italian

A pasta bar in Koreatown where the menu reads like a thought experiment: what if Italy and Korea had sorted things out earlier? Husband-and-wife chefs run a tight, dimly lit room with bar seating wrapping the space, the kind of setup that makes a solo dinner feel intentional rather than sad. The Korean-Italian mash-ups go all the way through to dessert, so order broadly and let the table sort out the overlaps.

  20. A seafood-focused breakfast and lunch spot sharing space with a mini market in Echo Park, Little Fish earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for food that punches well above its casual footprint. The signature fried fish sandwich, beer-battered Pacific striped bass with American cheese and kewpie mayo on a potato bun, is the kind of thing you'll think about on the drive home. Broccoli rabe skeptics and fish avoiders are looked after too.

  21. Rank 384. Little Fish Melrose Hill

    Californian Seafood

A seafood restaurant where the fried fish sandwich at lunch is reason enough to show up, with clean batter, juicy fish, and the kind of balance that makes most sandwich shops look sloppy. This Melrose Ave sit-down spot is the newer sibling of an Echo Park original, keeping the same focus on sustainably sourced fish and California produce. The room is bright, the wines lean natural, and the service knows what it's doing.

    Cantonese Noodle Shop

The parking lot fills fast and the wait on weekends is real, but this Cantonese noodle shop in Rosemead moves its crowd along with the confidence of a place that has never needed dim sum carts to draw a line. Everything arrives hot and carefully seasoned, from steamed buns packed with char siu to rice noodle rolls that most tables order twice. 23. No carts circle the dining room at this Alhambra dim sum house, which tells you something about how seriously the kitchen takes the whole operation. Orders come by menu, servers move fast, and the lobster noodle roll arrives on a platter dressed with the shell itself, a small piece of theater that gets noticed across the room. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, and the crowd on a weekend morning is exactly what you'd expect.

  24. A sign-in sheet on the sidewalk is your first clue that this strip-mall dumpling shop in Monrovia runs on its own terms. The menu is short, roughly half of it devoted to the namesake specialty, and the kitchen makes everything fresh each morning rather than pulling from a freezer. The pan-fried options tend to disappear fastest. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which explains the lines without quite preparing you for them.

  25. Rank 384. Lynx

    Pizzeria

A pizza spot in the Arts District where the menu is short and the crust does most of the talking, thin and crisp through the middle with edges that puff up just right. The toppings lean refined without getting precious, and the single dessert, a soft serve that rotates through flavors like tiramisu, keeps things honest. Joshua Skenes is behind it, and the cocktails are stronger than you'd expect from a slice operation. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand.

  26. Tin ceilings, tiled walls, and tall mirrors give this osteria on South Broadway the bones of a classic Roman trattoria, which is exactly what it's going for. Handmade pasta is the main event, with a rotating cast of shapes and tomato-based sauces that keeps the regulars from ever opening the menu properly. 27. Every room faces the ocean at this slim, swanky boutique hotel wedged between the Pacific Coast Highway and what the locals call Billionaire's Beach. Pale wood paneling, slate-bordered fireplaces, and custom white oak furniture keep things quietly serious, while the bathrooms go full futuristic with remote-controlled Toto toilets. Staff attend the beach chaises, and the waterfront terrace runs from morning avocado toast to late-night espresso martinis without ever dropping the mood.

  28. Rank 384. Mario's Butcher Shop

    High-End Sandwich Shop

A strip-mall butcher shop and deli in Newport Beach where the pastrami is cured in-house and the beef for the smash burger gets ground the same day. The Italian sub runs through Genoa, coppa, and soppressata, and the rotating specials board keeps things interesting. Regulars who already know their order fill the counter fast. Cheese, charcuterie, and house-made salads line the cases for the road.

  29. Rank 384. Mariscos Jalisco

    Seafood Mexican

The signature fried shrimp taco has a shell that shatters like tempura, which tells you most of what you need to know about this Jalisco-style mariscos shop in Pomona. The menu is short: tostadas loaded with lime-forward ceviche and that taco, nothing more. Raul Ortega started with a truck in Boyle Heights and the city never really let go. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand. First-timers order one; everyone else orders a plate.

  30. Rank 384. Matū

    Wagyu Steakhouse

The name comes from a Māori word, and the New Zealand Wagyu arrives wood-fired, which tells you something about the seriousness of the sourcing before you even sit down. This is a Beverly Hills steakhouse with exposed brick, brass fixtures, and an open kitchen, but the vibe runs warmer and more romantic than the category usually suggests. Wagyu here lands at prices that don't require a quiet moment with your bank app afterward.

  31. Sixteen rooms on Carbon Beach, all teak, all facing the Pacific, and a rate that ensures the other guests are probably not stressing about it. Nobu Ryokan is a boutique hotel modeled on a traditional Japanese inn, which means the design is spare, the pace is slow, and the whole point is that nobody can easily find you. Chef Nobu Matsuhisa's other properties thrive on being seen; this one is structured around the opposite instinct.

  34. Rank 384. Phở 79

    Vietnamese Noodle Shop

The clipboard by the front door tells you everything: this pho shop in Garden Grove has been an old-school institution long enough that the wait is just part of the ritual. The spartan room has a bright yellow wall covered in accolades, including a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and nobody glances up from their bowl long enough to admire them. The oxtail broth is what regulars order without looking at the menu.

  35. Rank 384. Pizzana

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The wood-burning oven came over from Italy, and you can watch it work through the glass-walled kitchen while you wait. This Brentwood pizzeria does Neapolitan pies with a crust that stays light and crisp through the center, topped with San Marzano tomatoes and fior di latte flown in weekly. Mediterranean-blue murals complete the homeland fantasy. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks: the room is always full and nobody looks like they're eating here ironically.

  36. Wood smoke from the rotisserie drifts a block down Western before you even see the place, which is as good an advertisement as any. This Koreatown Peruvian spot has been an old-school institution for decades, turning out whole chickens over live fire with a crispy, marinated skin that keeps the family recipe firmly in-house. The twice-fried fries and the spicy green aji sauce are not optional. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the wait will remind you why.

  37. Rank 384. Ramen & Tsukemen TAO

    Japanese Noodle Shop

Tucked into an easy-to-miss strip mall in Buena Park, this compact ramen shop seats maybe twenty people in a room that skips every non-essential, including ambiance. The menu is short and ramen is the clear center of gravity, from a rich, creamy spicy red miso to a lighter chicken broth that holds its own. The Michelin Bib Gourmand makes sense the moment the bowl arrives. Pork buns float in quietly and do their job.

Two seatings run nightly, one personally helmed by the chef himself. Lunch omakase lands considerably easier on the wallet if dinner feels steep. The Michelin Guide has taken notice, and the regulars already act like they found it first.

  46. Rank 384. The Factory Kitchen

    Northern Italian

Cement columns, garage doors rolled open to the street, and a modern bar give this Arts District restaurant a loft-like feel that has nothing to do with the food, which is decidedly old-country Northern Italian. The kitchen makes its pasta in-house and treats regional specificity as a point of pride, not a talking point. The Michelin Guide has flagged it with a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place this focused.

  53. The hourglass pool is the giveaway: this mid-century boutique hotel on the edge of Beverly Hills was built for people who know their Eames from their Noguchi and want the furniture to prove it. The blocky blue facade and curvaceous pool invite Marilyn Monroe comparisons, though the hotel probably doesn't encourage them. Quieter than you'd expect this close to everything, and the rates tend to be gentler than the zip code implies.

The team lost nearly everything in the Eaton Fire and kept going anyway, which gives the room a particular kind of warmth that has nothing to do with the flames. 57. A boutique hotel that looks like someone airlifted a Parisian luxury property into Beverly Hills and let the California sun bleach it into something crisper and more cinematic. The bones are from the old Tower Beverly Hills, but the interior is fully reimagined: black-and-white palette, clean lines, and just enough Hollywood glamour to feel intentional rather than themed. 60. The old bikini bar sign still hangs above the Santa Monica Boulevard entrance, which tells you most of what you need to know about Gold Diggers as a hotel. It occupies a building that once housed a bikini bar downstairs, a residential hotel above it, and a rehearsal space out back where L.A. rock royalty is rumored to have practiced. This Spanish Colonial hotel in downtown Los Angeles went through a Moroccan-themed detour before a full renovation returned it to its 1920s bones, and the rooms now pair that era's warm geometry with local art, most of it by women, down to a lobby mural. The anchor is The Hart and the Hunter, a Southern-leaning restaurant whose biscuits have reportedly stopped people mid-sidewalk. Rooms are compact and the point, as far as Paligroup is concerned, is the communal life downstairs. For a stretch of Melrose better known for vintage shops than overnight stays, it reads as a reasonable argument for the neighborhood.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
