The Best Places in East Village

  1. Rank 1. Penny

    Seafood

Two marble counters run the length of the kitchen, fronted by mounds of ice holding oysters, clams, and Champagne in roughly equal proportion. Penny is an all-bar seafood restaurant above Claud in the East Village, and the whole point is watching things get shucked, sliced, and dressed in front of you. It landed on North America's 50 Best Restaurants list. Most seats are walk-in, so arrive before doors open if you'd like one.

  2. Rank 2. Superiority Burger

    Vegetarian American

The quinoa-chickpea-walnut burger that made Brooks Headley famous is still on the menu at this vegetarian burger shop in the East Village, now in a bigger room with vintage diner bones. Nothing here pretends to be meat, which turns out to be the whole point. The Michelin Bib Gourmand and a New York Times top-100 spot follow naturally from cooking that treats bold seasoning and smart texture as the actual job. Save room for dessert; Headley came up as a pastry chef.

  3. Rank 3. Claud

    French

A few steps below street level on East Tenth, this French-inflected New American restaurant runs on shared plates and an open kitchen that keeps the room honest. The cooking touches the familiar at a slant: grilled cabbage, tempura squash blossoms, and a six-layer chocolate cake soaked in vermouth and evaporated milk that nominally serves two. The New York Times placed it fifteenth on its list of the city's hundred best. Reservations are a project, but the bar absorbs the overflow gracefully.

  4. Rank 4. Bar Miller

    Modern Sushi

Bold colors and custom ceramics set the tone at this tiny omakase counter on the Lower East Side, where the whole vibe runs warmer and looser than the austere hush you might expect. The Michelin-starred kitchen leans into North American sourcing, using New York-grown rice and regional fish, with trim and offcuts turned into a house tostada. Local wine, beer, and cider round out a sake list that runs from Brooklyn to Japan.

  5. The comal choricero never stops, and every cut of pig goes in at a different moment so the lard carries the memory of everything that came before it. This tiny taqueria on the Lower East Side does pork and pork only, from snout to cheek to offal, wrapped in homemade tortillas with fresh salsa. Paint buckets double as seats. The chef earned a James Beard nomination, and the Times put it among New York's best new restaurants of 2024.

  6. A petite East Village tasting menu spot where the produce comes from local queer farmers and the recipes go straight online for anyone who wants them. Chef Telly Justice runs two menus, one vegan and one omnivore, and Sunday brings a pay-what-you-want seating that fills fast. The kitchen leans hard into seasonal vegetables either way. Food & Wine named Justice a Best New Chef in 2025.

  7. Rank 8. Bánh Anh Em

    Vietnamese

The line forms on Third Avenue before the door unlocks, which tells you most of what you need to know about this no-reservations Vietnamese neighborhood spot in the East Village. The baguettes for the banh mi come out of the oven fresh, and the pho runs on housemade noodles. The New York Times named the banh cuon among its favorite dishes of the year, and Michelin handed it a Bib Gourmand.

  8. A subterranean New England seafood joint in the East Village where the menu runs heavily toward the ocean and the wine list follows suit, mostly whites chosen to keep pace with it. The New York Times named it among the city's best new restaurants, and the sommelier took a Next Wave Award. The celery root float has become something of a minor cult object, which tells you something about the kitchen's sense of humor.

  9. Rank 8. Tsukimi

    Japanese

A kaiseki counter in the East Village built around a single idea: moonlight. The name translates to "moon viewing," and the room takes that literally, with illuminated ceramic shelves and mirrored panels catching every gleam. The seasonal tasting menu moves with the kind of quiet confidence that doesn't need to announce itself, and the sake list, ordered à la carte, is the right move. Tsukimi holds a Michelin star.

  10. Rank 8. Tuome

    Chinese

Thomas Chen's East Village fine dining room sits behind bay windows with a backlit bar and purple seats that somehow avoid feeling precious. The menu moves between Asian traditions and classical technique in ways that feel considered rather than calculated, and the Michelin-starred kitchen earns its star without announcing it at every turn. Service knows the food cold but doesn't lecture. A neighborhood room that quietly does serious work.

  11. The cured olive cookie has been living rent-free in regulars' heads for years, which tells you something about this East Village espresso bar. Abraço roasts its own, keeps laptops out, and occasionally pivots to cocktails for evening music events, which is either a flex or just very New York. The room fills fast on weekends, the bites are small and creative, and the whole operation runs with a neighborhood-institution energy that's genuinely hard to fake.

  12. A U-shaped bar anchors this Danish coffee shop, where streamlined taps for cold drinks share space with a proper V60 setup and a counter lined with pastries worth stopping for. La Cabra built a following in Copenhagen before planting roots on the Lower East Side, and the East Village original still draws a crowd that treats croissants and a carefully pulled espresso as a reasonable reason to leave the house.

  13. Rank 14. Adda

    Indian

Newsprint wallpaper lines the hallway at this perpetually packed East Village Indian canteen, which relocated from Queens and came back louder. The kitchen runs on fierce seasoning and ornate presentations, often arriving in Le Creuset Dutch ovens that make the table feel like a small occasion. Order rice, order the crispy parathas, and plan to use them both. A Michelin Selected restaurant with a loyal following that doesn't really need to be told to come back.

  15. Rank 16. CheLi

    Shanghainese

Red and cream lanterns glow over a warren of nooks on St. Marks Place, where a line almost always trails out the front door. Che Li is a Shanghainese seafood-leaning restaurant with an ambitious menu, so asking the server about regional highlights beats scrolling to the familiar end. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, and the fish stew with Sichuan peppercorns tends to be the last thing standing on the table.

  17. Rank 16. Odre

    Korean

Three cauldrons of rice and soup stay warm at the bar up front, which tells you a lot about how Odre thinks about hospitality. This East Village prix-fixe leans into Korean comfort at a pace that feels considered rather than rushed, with a set menu that moves through banchan, a main like grilled duck with black garlic, and snow crab mandoo that the New York Times singled out. Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the room is narrow, minimalist, and usually full.

  18. Rank 16. Veselka

    Ukrainian Eastern European

The potato pierogi has been on The Infatuation's list of dishes that define New York, which tells you something about Veselka's place in the city's food mythology. This East Village Ukrainian diner has been around forever, serving borscht and pierogi to the neighborhood at all hours, 24-hour service now restored. It draws tourists, yes, but also the people who grew up eating here and aren't stopping. A James Beard Outstanding Restaurant semifinalist, and cheap enough that you'll go back.

  20. A handful of bar seats hovering over a kitchen the size of a closet sets the whole mood at this East Village izakaya from the team behind Odo. Rustic wood counter, exposed brick, a menu that moves through sashimi, grilled fish, wagyu, and things fried or simmered over rice. The food is meant to be shared, the pacing is unhurried, and the room seats enough people to make a reservation feel like a small victory.

  21. Antique telephone behind the bar, weathered wood beams, tufted red leather booths, a neon sign, and a back garden that softens the whole thing into something you didn't expect from East Village Thai. The menu runs long and regional, so bring enough people to order past the khao soi and into the pork blood soup. The cocktail program earns table time too. Reservations go fast, which the packed room will confirm before you even sit down.

  22. Rank 24. Soda Club

    Natural Italian Cocktail Bar

Velvet chairs, copper fixtures, and stained-glass lamps set a Prohibition-speakeasy mood on Avenue A, though the menu leans firmly into vegan Italian. Soda Club is a natural wine bar where house-made pasta carries the evening, the wine list skews minimal-intervention, and the whole thing holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The room is dim enough that everyone looks like they have secrets, which feels appropriate for a place named after Italian hand-crafted sodas.

  24. The picture window looks out on a community garden at 9th and Avenue C, and that's about as decorative as this coffee shop gets. Ninth Street Espresso has been a purist espresso spot in Alphabet City since what feels like the dawn of specialty coffee, roasting its own beans out in Long Island City and keeping the menu ruthlessly short. A cookie, a vegan mini-loaf, a bench out front if the weather allows.

  25. The second-floor dining room on Avenue A reads like a very chic treehouse, all intimacy and low light. This vegan restaurant in the East Village brings a real polish to plant-based cooking, with dishes assembled like small arguments for taking the cuisine seriously. The menu occasionally wanders into paella and mole territory, which is a choice. It's a Michelin Selected spot, and the kind of room where nobody misses the meat.

  27. Rank 30. Ishq

    Modern Indian

A salmon-pink quartz bar runs the full length of the front room before giving way to a moodier dining space where everything arrives family-style, whether you planned it that way or not. This modern Indian restaurant on Avenue A earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand by actually delivering on the spice, depth, and nuance that the genre usually only promises. The lamb shank biryani is portioned for a small crowd, which is the correct way to order it.

  28. The omakase counter tucked inside Kanoyama runs on select days only, so planning ahead is part of the deal. It's the serious, pricey sushi experience the East Village rarely advertises: a small counter, a chef calling the shots, and fish flown in with obvious intention. The sake list is deep enough that regulars argue about it, and you're handed an assortment of cups to choose from, which is a nicer problem than most restaurants give you.

  29. The dry pot at this East Village Sichuan spot lets you build your own bowl from scratch, choosing proteins, vegetables, and heat level from a list long enough to be mildly paralyzing. Low ceilings, exposed brick, and a communal table set the scene. The Michelin Bib Gourmand regulars often skip the decision fatigue and go straight for dan dan noodles or cold braised beef and tripe. Nothing here will make you cry; Sichuan-curious beginners are safe.

  30. David Chang's noodle shop has been around forever, and the steamed buns alone have kept it packed. The room runs on wood counters and an open kitchen, and service moves at a clip, which suits the vibe. The menu leans into Asian street food with enough creativity to keep regulars guessing. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of spot where you'll spend less than you expect and think about it for days after.

  31. Rank 30. Noreetuh

    Hawaiian

Polaroids of regulars tile every wall of this dimly lit East Village neighborhood restaurant, which has been doing Hawaiian comfort food long enough to feel like part of the block's furniture. The mochiko fried chicken comes with macaroni salad and King's Hawaiian rolls, the musubi platter runs from spicy spam to salmon tartare, and the German riesling list goes deeper than anyone sees coming. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a genuinely easy room to spend a whole evening in.

  32. A two-story Thai restaurant near Union Square that comes with a long bar, a full house most nights, and the kind of noise level that makes the food taste better. 33. Rank 30. Ruffian

    Wine Bar

A natural wine bar on East Seventh Street where the list leans hard into Eastern Europe and the sommeliers can talk about it all night. The food menu is short and rotates, which keeps the regulars genuinely curious. Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the room, split between a communal high-top and a quieter dining area, fills up fast enough that a reservation is less optional than it sounds.

  34. Rank 30. Sobaya

    Japanese Noodle Shop

Buckwheat soba, hot or cold depending on what the weather is doing to you, has kept this East Village noodle shop humming for longer than most of its neighbors have existed. The room runs to booths, counter seats, and a calm, traditional feel that makes it easy to linger. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and one of the rare spots in the city where a walk-in during peak dinner hours won't leave you standing on the sidewalk.

  35. Flour tortillas made in-house daily are the quiet backbone of this Tex-Mex taco spot in the East Village, where weathered wood and stained-glass chandeliers give the room a vintage roadhouse feel that has no business being this charming on Third Avenue. The menu leans into tacos and quesadillas, the cocktails are serious, and the Texas sheet cake with candied pecans is the kind of dessert that ends arguments. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  37. Rank 41. Ribalta

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A few steps from Union Square, Ribalta is a Neapolitan pizza spot that takes its dough seriously, the kind of light, well-leavened crust that makes the New York slice feel like a different food entirely. The room is spacious and lively without being loud, and the menu runs well beyond pizza into appetizers and mains. It landed at number eight on 50 Top Pizza USA, which the regulars packing the tables on a Tuesday probably already knew.

  38. Rank 43. Rosella

    Sustainable Sushi

The cerulean counter is handmade, the seafood is sustainably sourced, and the menu wanders freely from hand-roll culture to XO grits without apology. Rosella is a sushi shop on Avenue A that treats local, responsibly harvested fish with restraint and a little mischief. The wine list leans domestic, pulling from the North Fork and the West Coast. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and Esquire put it on their best new restaurants list.

  40. Rank 45. Ariari

    Korean

Wood paneling, banquette seating, and framed maritime art set the tone at this Korean shared-plates spot on First Avenue, where the menu orbits Busan's seaport identity. Seafood threads through nearly every dish, and the DIY gimbap with raw scallops, squid jeotgal, and apple kimchi is the kind of thing that makes a table go quiet. 41. Rank 45. Cello’s Pizza

    New York-style Pizzeria

A few whole pies rotate under the heat lamps and slices go fast at this East Village slice shop on St. Marks, which lands at number 14 on the 50 Top Pizza Slice USA list. The model is straightforward: New York-style by the slice, cold beer, and no lingering decisions required. The dough is thin and foldable, and the topping hand is generous. More room than you'd expect for the neighborhood.

  42. Rank 45. Miss Lily's

    Caribbean

Formica tables, reggae on the speakers, and glam servers navigating the brightly colored booths: Miss Lily's is a lively Jamaican restaurant on Avenue A that makes the case for Caribbean food without any downtown hedging. Curried goat, jerk chicken, and oxtail stew are the anchors, and a well-stocked bar means the rum is never far behind. The Michelin Guide has it selected, which tracks for a room this committed to a good time.

  43. The signature mushroom dish has been on the menu since the place opened, which tells you something about how the East Village regulars feel about it. Nudibranch is a contemporary restaurant where Asian and Spanish influences keep bumping into each other in ways that somehow work, portions run small, and everyone ends up eating off everyone else's plate anyway. The masala chai tres leches lands as a genuinely disorienting closer, in a good way.

Hundreds of terracotta pots hang from the ceiling, which gives this East Village Greek taverna the feel of a pottery barn that got very good at cooking. Tempura Japanese

A tempura omakase on the Lower East Side where the chef trained in French kitchens and uses mostly Japanese-sourced ingredients, which sounds like a concept pitch but unfolds as something quietly focused. The batter is sheer, the shrimp and anago are treated like they cost what they cost, and the meal opens and closes with dishes that have nothing to do with tempura. Small room, loyal regulars, not much signage.

  46. You receive an electronic letter with a coded cipher before you even find the door, which sets the mood for this East Village omakase counter built around the fictionalized office of a 19th-century world traveler. Taking the elevator to the sixth floor of a commercial building off Union Square is a strange way to find a kaiseki omakase, which is probably the point. The courses are elaborate and precise; the mood, somehow, is not.

A shawarma stall on St. Marks Place so cheerfully cramped it barely counts as a room, run by two friends who once cooked for Daniel Boulud and apparently never got spices out of their system. The vertical spit is the anchor, but everything on the menu, labneh, falafel, harissa, gets the same obsessive seasoning treatment: cumin, cinnamon, dill, and a few turns you won't see coming. Named one of New York's best new restaurants of 2024 by the Times.

  64. The lobby of the Classic Stage Company turns out to be a fine place for a coffee shop, all spare seats and big windows that beg you to watch people cross 13th Street. Everyman is a no-frills espresso bar pulling beans roasted by Black and White out of North Carolina, with Colson pastries from Brooklyn if you need something to eat. The staff are warm in a way that makes the spartan room feel intentional rather than unfinished.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
