Kinds of places

Cuisines

  1. Rank 185. La Docena - Roma

    Cajun & Creole Seafood

The raw bar is the main event here, a New Orleans-leaning oyster and seafood spot in Roma Norte that hums with the same energy as its Polanco and Guadalajara siblings. Tostadas, fish fillets, and a cured meat counter where some of the charcuterie gets sliced to order round out a menu that keeps things unfussy on purpose. Come thirsty and don't overthink it.

  2. Complimentary salsas and hand-cut crisps land on the table the moment you sit down, which softens the blow of the wait outside, often close to an hour. This upscale taquería in wealthy Las Lomas fills fast and takes no reservations, so arrive with patience and leave the diet at home. The tacos lean rich, truffled mushrooms, suckling pig, Black Angus seared on a trompo spit, and the music is loud enough that nobody's talking about the bill.

  3. Rank 232. Axiote

    Mexican

The guano leaf roof sets the palapa mood before you even sit down. This is a casual Yucatan restaurant in Gonzalo Guerrero where the salsas arrive first and pull no punches on heat. The kitchen runs familiar regional dishes with modern plating, and the desserts quietly steal the meal. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, it keeps portions generous and prices grounded. A full tasting menu exists if you want the longer conversation.

  4. The restaurant sits on the second floor of what's billed as Mexico's second self-sustaining building, which gives you a sense of how seriously the team takes its ethos. This is avant-garde Mexican dining in Tijuana, where the kitchen sources everything within 200 kilometers, leaning hard into Baja's coastal and agricultural abundance. Valle de Guadalupe wines make the obvious pairing. A Michelin Selected restaurant.

  5. Rank 234. Mestixa

    Asian fusion Mexican

A snake mural and paper lanterns set the tone before you've touched the menu at this cozy Asian-Mexican fusion restaurant tucked into Tulum Pueblo. The kitchen leans into the collision: birria ramen built with cascabel chili and tamarind, bao stuffed with pickled pear and hoja santa. The whole thing holds together in a way that sounds chaotic on paper and somehow isn't. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  6. A pianist plays while waiters glide past in a room that has clearly decided romance is nonnegotiable. This is formal French fine dining inside a Cancún resort, built around foie gras, black truffle, lobster, and caviar, the whole luxurious lineup. The desserts lean modern against classic technique. Afterward, the lounge takes over with live entertainment and nightcaps. It holds an AAA Five Diamond distinction.

  7. A Roma Norte taco spot where the pork does all the talking. The cochinita pibil arrives slow-roasted and shredded under a pile of pickled red onion, and the lechon taco layers tender suckling pig with shards of crispy skin, so ordering both is less a suggestion than a logical outcome. Good tortillas, a spread of salsas running from habanero heat to sesame aioli, and a room full of people who came with a plan.

  8. Rank 239. Cetli Restaurant

    Mayan Mexican

On the road toward the Cobá ruins, just past where the tourist noise of Tulum fades, Cetli serves Mayan Mexican cooking in a whitewashed room brightened by folk paintings and old artifacts on rustic wood tables. Fish cooked in seawater with almond mole and dark chocolate is the kind of dish that makes the drive feel incidental. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a room where the food is doing most of the talking.

  9. Corn sourced from small family farms around Mexico gets nixtamalized and ground in-house here, then pressed into tortillas on a comal you can watch from the front of the room. This warm, airy Mexican spot in Tijuana keeps the menu tight: tacos, tostadas, ceviche, egg dishes, and a daily tamal wrapped in banana leaf. The room has tile floors, wood furnishings, and a screen-covered roof. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  10. Rank 241. La 89

    Mexican

Plastic stools, metal tables, and a kitchen that refuses to rush anything, which is not nothing when you're talking carne asada grilled to order. This bright Roma Norte taqueria does birria, tortas, and quesabirria, the last of which holds up fine without the consommé but really wants it. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks. You will stand in line with people who know exactly what they're ordering before they reach the front.

  11. Rank 241. Siembra Tortillería

    Modern Mexican

The black awning covers two storefronts of counter stools facing an open kitchen where a Venezuelan chef who has spent decades in Mexico treats tortilla-making as the main event, selling them by the stack to locals and using them as the foundation for tacos, tlacoyos, and squash blossom quesadillas made to order. This Polanco taqueria holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the corn here is the argument.

  12. Rank 246. Gruta Ehden

    Middle Eastern

  13. Rank 246. Suntory

    Traditional Japanese

  14. Rank 260. Botánico

    Contemporary Mexican

The entrance on Calle Alfonso Reyes gives nothing away, but step inside this contemporary Mexican restaurant and there are tall cacti, a small fish-stocked lake, and the feeling of a courtyard that somehow forgot it was in the middle of the city. The menu moves between aguachile and pasta without apology, and a crème brûlée finished with Kalamata olive is the kind of move that sounds wrong until it isn't. Good for a date, fine for a family, easy for anyone.

  15. Rank 261. Hanky-Panky

    Cocktail Bar

  16. Sarape blankets drape the chairs and the handblown glasses have those colorful rims that always make you feel like the meal is already going well. Edith's is a Mexican restaurant in Cabo that ranges across the whole country on one menu, pairing Baja lobster taquitos with moles rooted in Guerrero. The room is festive in a way that earns it, and the cooking follows suit.

  17. Rank 262. Navios

    Seafood

Navios is a seafood restaurant where the tables sit on docks over the lagoon, some under thatched palapas and some under nothing but sun, so book a roof if you'd like to keep your composure. The kitchen leans Mexican-Asian, with the dots, swirls, and matchstick vegetables that say a plating class happened once. Time the reservation for sunset, order a spritz, and expect resort-area prices and dressy-casual linen. AAA gives it three diamonds.

  18. This is an Argentinian steakhouse on the Cancún hotel zone strip, with a shiny grill out front and a wine cove stocked with malbec and merlot. The brick walls and Mediterranean touches are meant to calm everyone down, and it works on large groups, couples, and parents alike. Expect a proper sit-down dinner with chimichurri, puffy souffle potatoes, and prices that assume you're on vacation. It holds AAA Three Diamonds.

  19. RosaNegra is a dinner party disguised as a restaurant, where the servers dance, the tomahawk steaks get a flamethrower, and fire dancers drop by between courses. Expect sparklers, cocktails in skull mugs, and a trout arriving under a smoking glass dome. It's a pricey Latin spot on the Boulevard Kukulkan hotel strip, so dress for a party and bring a card that won't flinch. AAA has given it three diamonds.

  20. The showstopping fountain in the center of the room tells you everything: Toro is a pan-Latin American restaurant that wants to be remembered. Large furniture, a buzzy atmosphere, and a menu that swings from Oaxacan cheese-smothered enchiladas to grilled cauliflower in pomegranate and red wine reduction. It's the kind of place where both the carnivores and the vegetarians leave satisfied, which is harder to pull off than the fountain makes it look.

  21. The terrace fills early with couples and the kind of people who dress like they read Italian Vogue, making Sartoria feel more Milan than Roma Norte. It's a neighborhood osteria at heart, with an industrial-chic interior and a focused menu that runs from antipasti through pasta to secondi. The kitchen takes presentation seriously, and the tiramisu is the kind that makes you question every other version you've had.

  22. Rank 269. Arturo's Restaurant

    Classic French

  23. Rank 269. Bruna

    Fusion Mexican

Black-and-white parquet floors beneath an art gallery roof set the mood at Bruna, a Mexican-fusion restaurant in Guadalajara's Lafayette neighborhood where the decor is flamboyant and the tables are hard to get. The chef pulls from street food stalls and family recipes, running much of it through a wood-fired grill. Habanero ice cream with cactus jelly for dessert is the kind of move that earns a spot on Mexico's Best 100 Restaurants list.

  24. Rank 269. Costa Guadiana

    Contemporary Mexican

  25. Rank 269. Eloise

    French

  26. Rank 269. Nectar

    Modern Mexican

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
