Rank 499. Bazaar Meat by José Andrés
Spanish Steakhouse
José Andrés runs this steakhouse inside the Ritz-Carlton NoMad like a controlled burn, with an open charcoal and wood-fired kitchen that fills the room with smoke and a sense of occasion that most restaurants wouldn't dare attempt. The cuts run American and Japanese, aged both ways, cooked over fire that does real work rather than just looking good. It landed on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, which tracks.

Rank 499. Best Bagel & Coffee
Bagel Shop
Some of the bagels here are so large they've lost their holes entirely, which feels like a metaphor for Midtown but is actually just breakfast. This no-frills bagel shop near Penn Station runs like a commuter train that actually shows up: the line moves, the bagels come out hot, and the chewy, twisty exterior is what you came for. The New York Times named it among the city's best, and the 8 a.m. crowd would agree without looking up.

The xiao long bao are made in-house, and you can watch through the glass as the pleating happens at speed. This is the New York outpost of the global dumpling chain, set in a large underground room near Times Square that runs loud and packed most hours of the day. The New York Times gave it a star in 2024, which did nothing to shorten the line. Expect a menu of soup dumplings in various fillings, a youthful crowd, and prices that won't require a moment of hesitation.

Rank 499. Eulalie
French
You book by phone, get buzzed through the door, and receive a handwritten menu, which either sounds precious or exactly right depending on your mood. Eulalie is a cozy, French-leaning prix-fixe spot in Tribeca where the formality is purely theatrical, the cooking is warm and assured, and the Named by the Times one of New York's best new restaurants in 2024, it feels less like a debut than a place that's been waiting for you to find it.

The picture window looks out on a community garden at 9th and Avenue C, and that's about as decorative as this coffee shop gets. Ninth Street Espresso has been a purist espresso spot in Alphabet City since what feels like the dawn of specialty coffee, roasting its own beans out in Long Island City and keeping the menu ruthlessly short. A cookie, a vegan mini-loaf, a bench out front if the weather allows.

Thoughtful Coffee
Concrete floors, black accent walls, and two arc-shaped bars make this FiDi coffee shop feel like it wandered in from Brooklyn and decided to stay. A multi-roaster menu pulls from a rotating cast of serious names, and the espresso machine moonlights for by-the-cup drip. There's a small food menu, housemade pastries, and, naturally, wine. Laptop seating is deliberately scarce, which says everything about what the room is for.

Rank 499. Zimmi's
French
The madeleines come out warm, baked to order, gilded nearly brown at the edges, and the Times critic named them among her favorite dishes of the year without mentioning Proust once, which takes restraint. Zimmi's is a rustic Southern French bistro on Bedford Street, the kind of place that makes butter-and-lemon sponge cake feel like an event without making a production of it. West Village regulars fill the room early.

Indian
The sea-blue tiled wall and intricate woodwork make this Upper West Side Indian restaurant feel like a deliberate escape from 72nd Street. The menu runs from snacks through sharing plates to mains, and the name doubles as a standing order: get a kebab. Finely minced baby goat formed around a skewer arrives with the thread unspooled tableside, which is either theatrical or deeply practical, possibly both.

American
The honey cardamom toast alone sends a signal about where the Noortwyck's head is at. This West Village neighborhood restaurant comes from Eleven Madison Park alums, and the menu moves between oysters and cinnamon rolls without blinking. The New York Times gave it two stars. Service has that unhurried quality that makes you feel less like a table and more like a regular, even on your first visit.

A boutique hotel in SoHo where the design story matters as much as the thread count. The team behind it worked with Danish studio Space Copenhagen to land somewhere between spare and warm, a look closer to Copenhagen than to the gilded-lobby tradition of New York luxury. They call their approach "conscious hospitality," which translates to charitable revenue-sharing rather than just a recycling card on your pillow. Quiet, considered, and not trying to impress anyone who needs impressing.

Steakhouse
The modest exterior on a quiet West Village street gives almost nothing away, which is apparently the point. Inside, 4 Charles Prime Rib is an intimate, old-school steakhouse with deep leather booths and staff who seem to know your name by the second drink. The prime rib comes three ways, the creamed spinach is non-negotiable, and the Valrhona chocolate pie in an Oreo crust lands like a closing argument.

The second-floor dining room on Avenue A reads like a very chic treehouse, all intimacy and low light. This vegan restaurant in the East Village brings a real polish to plant-based cooking, with dishes assembled like small arguments for taking the cuisine seriously. The menu occasionally wanders into paella and mole territory, which is a choice. It's a Michelin Selected spot, and the kind of room where nobody misses the meat.

A post-renovation boutique hotel sitting almost exactly halfway between Times Square and Columbus Circle, which is either perfectly convenient or a studied act of evasion, depending on your night. Rooms are compact but finished in Carrara marble with a sunny palette, allergen-free beds, and accents in chartreuse and aubergine. PHD Terrace puts Midtown views under an open sky with DJs and serious cocktails above it all.

Cashmere on the walls, not the bed, is the tell. This small, apartment-style hotel sits across from Central Park with no lobby to linger in and no public spaces to be seen in, which is rather the point. The Fasano brand's New York foothold runs to duplex suites with vintage furniture and park views, and a quiet caffè that doesn't announce itself. The crowd, such as it is, came specifically to avoid one.

Bunk rooms in a Manhattan hotel, by choice, designed by Roman and Williams, the firm behind some of the city's more coveted boutique addresses. Rank 529. Gui
Korean Steakhouse
The aged steaks arrive finished with nothing but Maldon salt, which tells you something about the confidence level here. Gui is a Korean steakhouse in Times Square that leans into Japanese wagyu and USDA Prime cuts alongside raw bar and Asian-inflected sides like wagyu fried rice. The sleek room draws theater crowds but doesn't need them; the menu earns a visit on its own terms.

Rank 529. J.G. Melon
American
The green-and-white checked tablecloths have been here so long they're practically load-bearing. JG Melon is an old-school Upper East Side burger joint where the dark wood bar stays busy, the staff is genuinely cheerful, and the cheeseburger is the reason The Infatuation named it one of New York's defining dishes. Come early or expect a wait, which at this point is just part of the ritual.

A hotel in Midtown that leans hard into the Irish pub aesthetic, Merrion Row sits one block from Times Square, which is either a selling point or a warning depending on your relationship with costumed characters. The rooms take their cues from Dublin's warmer traditions, which makes the whole thing feel less like a theme and more like an antidote. The elevator does the heavy lifting between the city outside and the calm within.

Rank 529. Nami Nori
Sushi
Temaki, or hand rolls, are the whole point here, served open-style and passed directly from the crew to the counter while the nori is still crisp. The room is all blonde wood and gray-blue cushions, casual and unhurried in a way that West Village sushi rarely bothers to be. The plant-based options get the same care as the fish. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, for whatever that tells you about the price-to-pleasure math.

The soup dumplings in the crab version are reason enough to find a table at this polished SoHo Chinese restaurant, where the room runs lanterns and a front bar and the kitchen turns out food that feels more Flushing than fashionable. John Cage's 4'33" is a listed design inspiration, which tells you most of what you need to know about this minimalist hotel on the Bowery. Rooms are bento-box small but composed with care, and the bigger configurations fit a whole touring band. Chinese
A serious wine list paired with Chinese cooking in Chinatown, right across from Seward Park. Tolo is a compact wine bar where the chef brings real polish to familiar dishes, the kind of place where the small tables fill up fast and nobody seems to mind. The Brooklyn Bridge is a short walk east, and the cobblestone streets outside look much as they did two centuries ago. This boutique hotel occupies a landmarked red-brick building that fits the Seaport District's Federal streetscape so naturally it's easy to assume it's always been there. Sixty-six rooms are spacious and calm, with marble bathrooms; upper-floor terraces face Peck Slip. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels.

Modern Korean
Burrata with rice cakes and gochujang-marinated chicken is either a terrible idea or a very good one, and this Lower East Side gastropub has decided it's the latter. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place this loose-limbed and fun.

Family recipes are the spine of the menu here, though Chef Max Wittawat dresses them up considerably. Bangkok Supper Club is a chic contemporary Thai restaurant in the West Village where the cocktail program pulls as much attention as the food, and the room has the candles-and-low-lighting energy to match. The Michelin Guide has it selected. Dishes read simple on paper and then arrive full of dramatic contrasts, which is the whole point.

Southern Fusion Korean
A ten-dish menu split between Southern comfort and Korean flavors sounds like a dare, but the chef at this snug Bleecker Street tapas spot pulls it off without breaking a sweat. Korean fried chicken shop on a busy Upper West Side corner, narrow and deep with an open kitchen you can watch from pretty much every table. A corner restaurant on Broadway where the teal-washed dining room and floor-to-ceiling windows make the whole place feel like an exhale. The long counter fills up with regulars who clearly know their way around a Middle Eastern menu, and the off-center bar is quietly good for eating solo. Dim sum made to order rather than wheeled around on carts sets this Chinatown shop apart from its neighbors. The photo menu keeps things moving, which helps on weekends when the room is full and tables are shared with strangers as a matter of course. Rice rolls, pan-fried pork dumplings, and soup dumplings all come out fresh. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the portions are generous enough that the slightly higher prices barely register.
