Ten rooms in the former residence of a Maharaja, sitting in near-total seclusion inside one of the noisiest cities on earth. The Nadesar Palace is a luxury heritage hotel with claw-foot tubs, antique furnishings, art from the original collection, a small spa, a pool, and three meals served in properly opulent rooms. The contrast between the chaos outside and the hush within is the whole point. It holds a Michelin Key.

A bend in the Ganges where the foothills of the Himalayas crowd the horizon on every side: that's the view from your room, your balcony, and the window-wrapped restaurant below. This Taj resort sits several miles upriver from Rishikesh, which gives it both genuine seclusion and a cultural weight the town itself can't offer. Rooms run toward calm minimalism, the Jiva spa does what Jiva spas do, and the rafting and trekking outside are as serious as you want them to be. It holds a Michelin Key.

Built as a guest house for a visiting future King of England, this palace hotel in Gwalior later became the ruling family's private residence, and that lineage hangs pleasantly in the air. Nine acres of gardens, rooms that trade on the bones of a historic building, and self-contained pool villas for those who need no excuse to leave. The staff anticipate what you want before you've decided, which is either impressive or slightly uncanny. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

A ten-suite mountain retreat in the Indian Himalayas, designed by Sri Lankan architects schooled in Geoffrey Bawa's tropical modernism, which looks considerably more bracing at altitude. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Binsar hills, raw concrete softens under bamboo and hardwood, and the dining room cantilevers right over the hillside. The Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, leopards included, sits on the doorstep. Michelin awarded it one Key.

Fortress walls gleam white after dark, enclosing an 18th-century Hindu temple rising from a lotus pond, and the whole scene looks less like a hotel than a painting someone decided to inhabit. This Jaipur resort holds a Michelin Key and leans hard into fantasy, with five staff per guest, silk-roofed tents fitted with claw-foot tubs and air conditioning, and candlelit dinners on handmade linen. For anyone unbothered by being waited on relentlessly, it rewards handsomely.

The 25 tents here are technically camping the way a maharaja's palace is technically a house. Each air-conditioned canvas suite runs nearly 800 square feet, with teak floors, colonial furniture, and a claw-foot tub parked in the center of a bathroom the size of most city hotel rooms. The whole operation sits at the edge of Ranthambhore National Park, where tiger sightings are frequent and jeep safaris can be arranged well in advance. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Key.

Nine rooms sit just outside Jaipur, giving this small hotel the feel of a country estate that got very lost on its way from Tuscany. The collaboration between an Italian-Swiss hotelier and a Dutch designer produced something unexpected: Rajasthani architecture turned up to full saturation, every surface a Technicolor fantasy. A pool, spa, garden pavilion, and library keep things calm between the color. The restaurant runs Italian alongside Rajasthani, which is exactly as interesting as it sounds. It holds a Michelin Key.

Runway View rooms do exactly what they promise, with soundproofing good enough that you're watching planes in eerie silence. This Hyatt Andaz hotel sits in Aerocity, two miles from the terminal, which in Delhi traffic is a genuine luxury in itself. Rooms run oversized even at entry level, suites push further, and the apartments come with full kitchens. The Hong Kong Club bar and restaurant, dressed in dramatic Cantonese style, keeps the evenings interesting.

Perched inside Delhi's Aerocity development, a whole mini-city conjured at the airport's edge, this ultraluxury hotel leans into the ambition of its surroundings. Rooms run to warm ochres, rain showers, and oversize tubs, while higher floors add a 24-hour butler in case you've forgotten what it's like to want for nothing. There's an all-day restaurant, a cocktail bar swinging for NYC credentials, a rooftop pool café, and a spa. Hot-air balloon rides, apparently.

Silk pillow covers stitched from old saris, Art Deco antiques picked off local market floors, teak boards salvaged from demolished buildings: the boutique hotel in this colonial Colaba address wears its nostalgia as decor rather than theme. Rooms are simple and comfortable, a few share baths, and breakfast comes with masala chai. The library photographs beautifully, which the guests seem aware of.

Neapolitan Pizzeria
A second-floor pizza spot in Surat where the chef trained in the Italian tradition and means it. The dough gets the full Neapolitan treatment, and the menu splits between classic pies and the Indian Passport, a fusion number that does exactly what the name promises. Pasta and appetizers round things out, and the espresso corner is a genuine commitment to the bit. It ranked 47th on 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific.

Neapolitan Pizzeria
Neapolitan-style pizza in Vasant Vihar, wood-fired and served in slices for the table to share. The long-fermented dough gets a soft, open crumb and a properly puffed cornicione, topped with Italian imports alongside a few local additions and a chicken section that knows its audience. The room runs to soft colors and natural materials, and there's a small counter selling fresh herbs, spices, and homemade jams on the way out. It ranked 41st on 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific.

A copper-and-glass staircase anchors the lobby of this upscale business hotel in Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai's financial district, where multinational offices fill the surrounding blocks. The French chain's signature is restraint, which reads as a genuine virtue here: dark wood floors, oversized tubs, L'Occitane toiletries, and beds that feel engineered for unconsciousness after a day in one of the world's most exhilarating cities.

A blocky 18-story tower perched on the Bandra headland, this Taj hotel trades the old-world grandeur of its downtown sibling for something more contemporary, with sea views that do a lot of the heavy lifting. Nearly 500 rooms, all fitted out in the luxurious-but-modern register the Taj does reliably well. Its real argument is geography: a quiet remove from central Mumbai, with Bandra-Kurla and both airports within easy reach.

Full-length windows and domed ceilings pull the sky into each of the 50 rooms at this airport hotel that quietly refuses the category. Marble bathrooms with rain showers, a spa using natural products, and an outdoor pool handle the decompression, while two restaurants and a crimson cocktail bar with live piano handle everything else. The manicured gardens offer the one thing neither the plane nor the boardroom could: uncrowded silence.

Near the Bandra-Kurla business corridor and a short hop from the airport, this sprawling modern hotel bills itself as a "lifestyle complex," which is fair: four restaurants, a spa, and an on-site mall mean you could theoretically never leave. The tiered façade here borrows from the baori, the ancient Indian stepwell built as much for shade and socializing as for water. This Taj resort sits just south of Delhi, far enough to feel like an escape without requiring a commitment to the countryside. Rooms open onto private balconies with Aravalli Hills views, Punjabi and Haryana cooking draws from the region, and a rooftop, a glass lounge, and an infinity pool each make a credible case for the signature cocktail.

A 322-room business hotel on the Delhi-Gurgaon border that contains, among other things, a flagship restaurant with seven exhibition kitchens and a bar reportedly sitting on one of nine remaining bottles of fifty-year-aged Glenfiddich. Reflection pools run the length of the grounds, spaced with the kind of precision that makes you wonder if someone measured the distance between deck chairs. A sunburst installation at reception stops guests mid-stride, which is a good sign for a hotel that also has a tea lounge framed by three life-size cherry trees. This is a large, polished luxury hotel in Gurugram, New Delhi's business-minded satellite city, where the competition is fierce and the lobbies are always trying to win. A 35-acre estate two hours south of New Delhi, understated in a way that most luxury Indian resorts conspicuously are not. The Westin Sohna keeps just under a hundred rooms and villas spread across gardens that feel genuinely quiet after the chaos of the capital. A restaurant in Gurugram built around the idea that street-food classics deserve a proper room and a cocktail list. A sunny cafe inside the National Crafts Museum, Cafe Lota takes pan-Indian cooking seriously enough to champion the dishes that usually get crowded out by the familiar northern canon. Ragi breads, Gujarati dal dhokli, palak patta chaat, and a sour aam panna sit alongside excellent iced coffee, all in a shaded courtyard that fills with museum-goers who seem in no hurry to leave.

South Indian coffee brewed in a steel pot and poured with a practiced arm sets the tone at this cozy South Indian cafe in GK2's M Block Market. The kitchen zeroes in on dosas done the Bangalore way, the kind that sends homesick diners from the south into quiet rapture. The puddu, deep-fried rice flour balls glossed with ghee, make an excellent argument for arriving hungry. Coriander-spiced buttermilk is the move if coffee isn't.

Nagaland's hill country, a cuisine most Delhi menus have long ignored, gets a proper home at this casual mid-range restaurant in Vasant Kunj. The kitchen leans on foraged and carefully sourced ingredients from the northeast, and the cooking has only sharpened since the move south. The crowd that follows a restaurant across the city tends to know what they're doing, and this one draws exactly that.

Pandara Road has been feeding Delhi families since partition refugees set up dhabas here, and Gulati is the one that stuck around longest and loudest. Amritsari naan is a meal in itself, not a scoop for something else, and this no-frills naan house near Rajouri Garden Metro has built its following around that single idea. The kitchen stuffs house-made paneer into the dough, fires it in a tandoor, and sends it out with butter and pickled onions. Order the lassi, thick and sweet with pistachios on top. A boutique hotel practically in the shadow of Mehrangarh Fort, with the sandstone ramparts looming over the pool cabanas in a way that makes daytime heat feel almost worth it. Most rooms look straight up at the fort, which sets an unreasonable standard for a window view.

A cricket pitch on the grounds sets the tone at this boutique luxury resort on the Goan coast, where the pace is deliberately unhurried. Alila's signature shows throughout: infinity pools, crisp contemporary rooms with deep soaking tubs, and pitched-roof architecture that nods to the local vernacular without overdoing it. The Arabian Sea is a short walk through plantation land, and most rooms come with a terrace to observe it from a distance first.

A lily pond courtyard sits at the center of this luxury hotel, with the greenery of Guindy National Park just beyond the perimeter, which is a rare thing to say about a place fifteen minutes from the airport. George Wong designed it around the idea of a weavers' house, and the 200 rooms carry that out in marble floors and generous proportions. Three restaurants, a spa, and a rooftop infinity pool round out a property that makes leaving it feel optional.

Vines drape the balconies in a way that softens what is otherwise a very large building doing its best to swallow the sky. This full-service luxury hotel sits in Alipore, the leafy, historically posh district that once housed the Viceroy and now holds the zoo, the racetrack, and the National Library. Inside, Bengali artwork lines the walls, eight restaurants cover most of the globe, and heads of state keep the staff practiced. Standard rooms lean traditional; suites go slightly more contemporary.

The Raj-era bones of this Chennai landmark carry the fingerprints of Sri Lankan modernist Geoffrey Bawa, and a recent renovation kept the ornate character intact rather than sanding it smooth. It's a full-service luxury hotel where business travelers and Chennai's social circuit quietly overlap, the lobby always suggesting a slightly more glamorous errand than the one you're actually running. Dining spans the Raintree and the Anglo-Indian Verandah, with the Lady Connemara Bar for after.

The Taj hotel group covers every major Indian city like a business-class safety net, and this Chennai outpost is where quite a lot of commerce quietly changes hands. A large-scale luxury hotel in Nungambakkam, it went through a major renovation that landed somewhere smart and crisp, colonial-luxe without tipping into design-hotel self-consciousness. Rooms run from generously large to genuinely vast, and the pool, 24-hour gym, and two restaurants keep visiting executives more or less indefinitely self-sufficient.

Lily-padded waterways thread through sixteen acres on the eastern edge of the city, which is not what you expect from a Kolkata business hotel. Kerry Hill Architects designed this "business resort" to feel genuinely open, spreading rooms across a low, landscaped campus rather than stacking everything into a tower. The pool, spa, and handful of restaurants make it self-sufficient, which is fortunate, since the city center is a taxi ride away.

Five rooms in a Civil Lines bungalow, made-to-order vegetarian meals served in the garden, and not a hotel lobby in sight. This intimate guesthouse came together through an unlikely collaboration: an Indian jeweler, a French architect, a Lebanese interior designer.
