  3. Red-brick turrets rising over the Ardennes make the Château de Vignée look like the setting of a fairy tale someone forgot to finish. Inside, the rooms and suites run surprisingly contemporary, all calm and quiet luxury. The kitchen grows its own vegetables in an on-site greenhouse, and a small spa sits at the edge of the Lesse for when the hiking gets old. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  6. Six suites tucked inside a restored stone farmhouse within Namur's walled citadel, with the city spread out below. NE5T is a small, intimate hotel where the rooms do the heavy lifting: duplex layouts, timbered ceilings, Hästens beds, and in the Duplex Vauban, a full hunting-lodge atmosphere for anyone who's always wanted to sleep like a 17th-century general. There's a spa and a private dining room, and full meals come to you rather than the other way around.

  10. The Art Deco bar, all red velvet and crystal sconces, makes a case for why Knokke-Heist once drew the Frank Sinatra and Brigitte Bardot crowd. This hotel reopened a few years ago after Belgian architect Glenn Sestig reworked it: eucalyptus paneling, onyx marble, and a quiet-luxury ethos in rooms with king beds and deep soaking tubs. Upper suites look out over the North Sea, which is a reasonable trade for the Belgian coast.

  12. A boutique hotel sitting right beside Knokke's famous casino, ENSO pulls off the slightly improbable trick of being both Japanese and Parisian at once, black and white minimalism meeting a few continental flourishes. Breakfast is à la carte, which feels like a small courtesy when you don't have to squint at a buffet. The team here runs a tight, personal operation, the kind where someone notices things before you have to ask.

    The awards

  13. The Anglo-Norman architecture in the upscale Zoute district of Knokke-Heist makes Hotel Britannia look like an English country house that took a wrong turn and ended up somewhere considerably sunnier. It's a boutique-style hotel with contemporary interiors that still feel historically grounded, a library and lounge for quiet drinks, a terrace, and a short walk to the beach. Breakfast is served on site, and the warmth of the place carries through from the smallest room to the largest suite.

  15. A Gothic-revival shell holding a boutique hotel that can't quite decide which century it prefers, which turns out to be a feature. Rooms run from chandeliers-and-period-furniture to stripped-back black-and-white minimalism depending on your mood. A small spa with a hammam and sauna, afternoon tea five days a week, and Bar Mémoir for cocktails round things out. Named for the Dutch architect who built the place, which is the kind of detail that rewards reading the plaque.

  19. A cocktail bar planted defiantly in the heart of Belgian beer country, Botanical by Alfonse leans into herbs and botanicals the way a brewery leans into hops. The corner room softens its concrete floors with velvet banquettes, fresh greenery, and framed art, and in warmer months a little patio opens up outside. The menu rotates monthly, chasing seasonality and, apparently, the mood of the team making the drinks.

  22. Five suites spread across two buildings in the East Flanders village of Bazel, the older ones leaning traditional, the newer Relais de Bazel running more contemporary, and a wraparound terrace on the loft with views that justify packing a second coffee. This boutique hotel shares its name and address with the Michelin-starred restaurant next door, which is either a convenient coincidence or the whole point of coming.

  23. Rank 823. Bar Ran

    Cocktail Bar

In a city where the default drink order writes itself, Bar Ran has quietly decided cocktails are the point. This neighbourhood cocktail bar runs a menu called Chroma, where each drink is keyed to a colour, and the team grows their own herbs and makes ingredients in-house. Funk and disco handle the playlist. The room is loose and unhurried, the kind of place you stay longer than planned.

    The awards

  24. Rank 823. BelRoy's Bijou

    Cocktail Bar

Cocktail glasses chilled to -25°C before anything goes in them tells you where this Antwerp bar's head is at. BelRoy's Bijou distills its own spirits and bottles its own cocktails, so the house pour here is the house, full stop. Tapas come out to keep things going, but drinking is the point. It's a stylish room that takes the glass seriously without taking itself too seriously, which in a cocktail bar is harder than it sounds.

    The awards

  25. Rank 823. Dogma Cocktails

    Cocktail Bar

Dogma calls its menu "dandy drinks," which turns out to be accurate rather than just cute. It's a cocktail bar on a quiet Antwerp side street that treats the classics as starting points, nudging a Negroni sideways with Amer Picon and building from there. Fresh oysters and a cheese-and-charcuterie board give you a reason to stay past the second round. The 50 gave it a Discovery nod, and the crowd seems quietly pleased with itself for having found it.

  31. A lily pond terrace attached to a brasserie is a strong argument for a mid-sized Belgian city you might otherwise skip. Hotel Serwir, in Sint-Niklaas between Ghent and Antwerp, runs 78 rooms with dark wood and amber lighting that keeps them feeling less like a business park than most at this price point. The brasserie draws locals on a weekly-changing menu of Belgian cooking, which is usually a good sign in a hotel.

  33. Stone streets, medieval facades, and somewhere below your feet, a subterranean nightclub: Durbuy contains multitudes. Le Sanglier des Ardennes is a luxury boutique hotel where a recent change of ownership has layered contemporary design over the historical bones, giving rooms a mix of aged character and spa-like bathrooms. There's an elaborate wellness facility, a pan-global brasserie, and a Japanese-inspired grill for anyone who finds the Middle Ages a bit one-note.

  42. A restored medieval farm less than an hour from Brussels where the stone walls give way to contemporary art and designer interiors the moment you step inside. Indrani Lodge is a rural retreat built around daily yoga classes, a heated indoor pool, and rooms that run from generously large to a 200-square-meter loft. The on-site restaurant pulls heavily from its own kitchen garden, which is the kind of detail that either seals it or doesn't.

    The awards

  43. A ten-room boutique hotel in a Limburg farmhouse that was a ruin before the family who owns it rescued it. It carries the ease of a countryside B&B and the quiet grandeur of a manor, which is a harder balance to strike than it sounds. The open kitchen turns out dinner from the garden; the rooms run to bold colors and deliberately sparse decor. The Michelin Guide has it in its selected hotels list.

    The awards

  44. Six rooms crammed with curios, faux fur, and enough drawers to keep you busy for an hour. This boutique hotel in Ypres plays the eccentric card without apology, and the bar looks like a West Flanders drawing room designed by Jack White. Breakfast runs past the usual sad pastry spread into eggy crumpets with chili peppers, which sets the tone. The town itself is sobering WWI history wrapped in a rebuilt medieval shell, and the hotel is a genuinely odd counterpoint to all that weight.

  46. A stately renovated farmhouse on a verdant plateau between the Mehaigne and Meuse valleys, Domaine de Naxhelet is a golf resort that wears its agricultural bones well, exposed beams and parquet flooring intact beneath the updates. Thirty holes designed by Martin Hawtree anchor the property, with a spa, hammam, and hot-spring baths for anyone who pulls a shoulder on the back nine. Wallonia gets overlooked, which the 33 rooms and suites here are quietly counting on.

  49. A stately Flemish mansion in Borgloon's orchard country, Villa Copis is a boutique hotel where crystal chandeliers and hand-painted murals share space with the kind of antique writing desks that make you feel like you should be composing letters. Upper rooms get exposed brick, wood-beamed ceilings, and freestanding tubs. Weekend breakfast runs late, which is the Belgian countryside's polite way of telling you there's nowhere you need to be.

The dining room sits inside an old doctor's house in a quiet Flemish village, all snug interior and a terrace that makes you want to linger. This is a set-menu restaurant where the chef leans hard into Modern French cooking, then cheerfully ignores the genre's guardrails. Flavors are bold and the combinations are unexpected in the way that makes you stop mid-bite. Tamara runs the front of house like she knows exactly why you came.

    Italian

A whitewashed corner building on Sint-Martens-Latem's picture-postcard village square, Amici is an Italian trattoria where the menu reads like a letter from someone's nonna: vitello tonnato, fettuccine with ragù, house-made tiramisu. Nothing here is trying to surprise you, which is precisely the point. The wine list leans Italian and stays sensible on price, and the room fills with the easy noise of people who showed up hungry and left happy.

  76. A family-run Italian osteria in Ixelles where the name, which translates loosely to love, pasta, and joy, doubles as an accurate menu preview. A short walk from the main square, this wine bar and restaurant threads together Mediterranean warmth and Middle Eastern fermentation in a way that feels considered rather than fashionable. A converted family home turned modern French restaurant in Eupen, Antoine has that rare quality of feeling genuinely domestic without being shabby about it. 81. Tuscan cooking with a Ghent postcode, parked between a Holiday Inn and a Marriott on the ring road in a setup that sounds unlikely until the food arrives. 83. A casual Italian neighborhood spot in Saint-Gilles that fills quickly with locals who seem to know the menu by heart but let the front-of-house talk them through it anyway. The cooking leans into the kind of unfussy, full-flavored Italian food that doesn't need a concept to justify itself: burrata ravioli, bright tomatoes, nothing trying too hard. BASK is a Basque-inspired sharing-plates restaurant with the bones of a vintage dive and the energy of a concert venue. Pintxos come with your aperitif, then things get serious: grilled turbot, aged guinea fowl, sauces that make you slow down. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
