Departments

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

  1. Rank 291. Selecto

    Modern French

A bistro on one of Brussels' more self-consciously cool streets, Selecto earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand by keeping things honest: a short set menu, blackboard specials, and modern French cooking that leans Mediterranean when the mood takes it. The flavors are direct and generous rather than architectural. The wine list tilts French without being smug about it. Regulars seem to have done the math on the prix fixe and decided there's nothing to argue about.

  2. The EU district runs on ministry buildings and corporate hotels, and the Sofitel Brussels Europe sits among them looking sharper than it has any obligation to. A 149-room hotel where the modernist furniture is the real surprise, it delivers the things chains do well, service and consistency, without the punishing sameness. A French restaurant on-site ensures the food holds up whether you're here on business or simply passing through the neighborhood on your own terms.

  3. Rank 291. Stone Dial

    Contemporary Chinese

An old wood-burning stove anchors the dining room of this contemporary Chinese restaurant, which occupies what may be the oldest building in Uccle. The setting is a little theatrical, all dark wood and vintage quirk with chopsticks on the table, and the menu leans into the contrast: colorful, generous plates of traditional Chinese cooking. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place that feels like a find without making you feel like you're being let in on a secret.

  4. Singha is the mythological lion the place takes its name from, and his image shows up throughout a dining room that leans into Thai decor without apology. This is a neighborhood Thai restaurant that has been around forever and holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, with a long menu of spiced, balanced dishes and portions that don't feel stingy. Book ahead, or you'll be walking home with a takeaway bag, which is honestly not the worst outcome.

  7. A family-run Italian osteria in Ixelles where the name, which translates loosely to love, pasta, and joy, doubles as an accurate menu preview. The team makes their pasta in-house, the antipasti lean generous, and the cooking runs on familiarity rather than flourish. It's the kind of neighborhood place where you already know what you want before you've sat down, which is usually exactly the point.

  8. A casual Italian neighborhood spot in Saint-Gilles that fills quickly with locals who seem to know the menu by heart but let the front-of-house talk them through it anyway. The cooking leans into the kind of unfussy, full-flavored Italian food that doesn't need a concept to justify itself: burrata ravioli, bright tomatoes, nothing trying too hard. Portions are generous and prices are honest, which explains the faithful crowd.

  9. Rank 306. Au Vieux Saint Martin

    Belgian Brasserie

Colorful artwork lines the walls of this old-school Brussels brasserie on the Grand Sablon, and the terrace pulls in everyone from antique dealers to tourists who've just figured out where they are. The menu reads like a Belgian civics lesson: filet américain, vol-au-vent, brains with gribiche. The larder is famously well-stocked, and the kitchen doesn't pretend otherwise.

  11. Rank 306. Belga Queen

    Modern Brasserie

The vaulted ceilings, dome windows, and stone columns of a former 18th-century bank set the stage here, and the room earns every dramatic glance. Belga Queen is a grand Brussels brasserie where classics share the menu with sharper modern cooking and a seafood bar that gets the most attention from the kitchen. The crowd tends toward people who like their lunch to feel like an occasion, which in this city is a reasonable number of people.

  12. Shelves of jarred tomatoes, cured meats, and imported pantry staples line the walls, because Bottega Vannini operates as a deli first and a trattoria second, more or less simultaneously. The Italian menu runs through classics like vitello tonnato and saltimbocca with no interest in reinventing them. Bring a bottle and pay the corkage, or browse their wine selection. Before you leave, the counter will almost certainly convince you to take something home.

  16. Rank 306. Chaga

    Contemporary French

The dining room sits on the top floor of a boutique hotel overlooking Brussels Park, and the room has the quiet confidence of somewhere designed by people who actually care about rooms. The contemporary French menu follows suit, with a chef whose cooking finds its edge in unexpected pairings rather than classical restraint. Dinner here runs formal without feeling stiff, and the service aims to leave nothing unasked for.

  17. Rank 306. Chou

    Mediterranean

The name is a French term of endearment, which tells you something about how the regulars feel about this place. It's a gastronomic bistro in Ixelles that leans into Mediterranean warmth, drawing a faithful mix of neighbourhood locals and the nearby EU crowd who've quietly claimed it as their canteen. The chef's cooking moves between the rustic and the considered, with dishes that tend to involve good French technique and produce that earns its billing.

  18. Rank 306. Ciao

    Modern Italian

The dining room inside a 17th-century stately home on Place Poelaert, all character and elegance with a pretty bar tucked alongside. The building belongs to a private club, but Ciao is open to anyone who wanders in. The chef leans heavily Tuscan, turning out Italian comfort food with a light modern hand, housemade pasta and slow-braised cuts that feel considered without feeling precious.

    Modern French

A contemporary villa near the Brussels ring road that runs on gutsy, big-boned French cooking. The chef trained classically and still shows it, but the menu moves with the moment: rich sauces, carefully handled fish, flavors that feel considered rather than fussy. The room has a casual, buzzy energy that makes the whole thing feel like a celebration even when it isn't one, which is a neat trick for a place this polished.

  20. A butcher's counter near the open kitchen sets the tone at this Uccle steakhouse, where you pick your cut before it meets a Josper charcoal oven. 21. Rank 306. Colonel Louise

    Modern French

A row of cured meats draped across the counter greets you before you've even sat down, which tells you exactly what kind of brasserie this is. Near Avenue Louise, Colonel Louise is built around beef, and the first real decision is which breed you want: Aubrac, Wagyu, or Holstein. The fries come cooked in beef tallow, the bone marrow is on the menu without apology, and the vitello tonnato is there for anyone who needs a break from red meat. They don't, usually.

Two friends run this creative French restaurant in Dilbeek, doing everything themselves, from sourcing vegetables from local market gardeners to pulling fish from the North Sea. The cooking is produce-led and quietly ambitious, with fermented flavors and unexpected textures woven through dishes that never feel overwrought. A garden patio and a well-chosen wine list round things out for a crowd that takes lunch seriously but hasn't booked a babysitter.

  25. A stylish villa outside Brussels where a chef took over the family restaurant and quietly made it his own. The cooking is farm-to-table contemporary, rooted in Belgian produce and legible flavors, with the occasional Asian detour that earns its place rather than apologizing for it. The room runs warm and unstuffy, the kind of place where the food feels considered without anyone reminding you of that fact.

A beige-toned dining room in the well-heeled Fort Jaco neighborhood, where the kitchen takes its cues from Puglia: bright, sun-driven flavors with a light touch. The bar is worth arriving early for, partly for cocktails and partly to plot a run through the adjoining deli before you sit down.

  30. Rank 306. La Belle Maraîchère

    Franco-Belgian Seafood

Shrimp fritters and saddle of hare on the same menu tells you exactly what kind of place this is: an old-school Franco-Belgian seafood restaurant on the Saint-Catherine square, nostalgic in the best possible, unironic way. The room feels like Brussels circa a much earlier decade, and nobody seems to mind. Fish arrives impeccably fresh, portions run generous, and the crowd is the sort that has been coming long enough to skip the menu.

  31. The tiled walls and zinc bar still look exactly like the butcher's shop this Art Deco Saint-Gilles building once housed, which sets up an odd, charming contrast with what comes out of the kitchen. This neighborhood restaurant serves modern, organic-leaning food, the kind where carrots get a whole dramatic arc and a piece of fish arrives with quiet Asian inflections. The cooking is playful without being showy, and the prices stay sensible enough that coming back feels easy.

  32. Rank 306. La Taverne du Passage

    Art deco Brasserie

A flock of golden origami birds hangs from the ceiling of this Art Deco brasserie tucked inside the Galerie de la Reine, and the room has been quietly ignoring the decades ever since. The menu runs the same direction: shrimp fritters, veal kidneys in mustard cream, warm chocolate mousse. Classic Belgian comfort food, served without apology in a setting that makes the Grand Place feel almost too modern.

Sole meunière and Black Angus steak with fries share the menu with pigeon over fermented raspberry purée, which tells you most of what you need to know about this grand Brussels dining room. It's a classic French restaurant that's been around forever, lately refreshed with a sleek, low-lit interior that lands somewhere between old-world institution and cosmopolitan brasserie. The service is the attentive, read-your-mood kind that Brussels does well.

  35. Rank 306. Le Buone Maniere

    Modern Italian

The terrace out back, half-hidden from the avenue, sets the tone for this Italian restaurant in Etterbeek where the cooking tilts classic but keeps a few surprises up its sleeve. 39. Rank 306. Le Mucha

    Classic French

The Art Nouveau interior puts you squarely in a turn-of-the-century Parisian brasserie, all warm wood and period detail, though you're firmly in Woluwe. Classic Belgian-French cooking fills the menu: steak with a béarnaise that apparently breaks some rule, fresh fries cut to order, veal's brains for the nostalgic, île flottante for dessert. On jazz nights, the whole time-warp effect gets a little harder to argue with.

  40. Rank 306. Le Passage

    Classical French

A neighborhood classic in the Saint Job quarter of Uccle, where the kitchen leans into traditional French technique with the occasional international detour. The dining room sits inside the Flagey building, a swooping Art Deco landmark that locals call the ocean liner, and the exotic wood paneling makes the brasserie feel like a first-class cabin that actually serves food. 44. Calf's brains in lemon sauce and veal kidneys in mustard sit comfortably alongside tagliata on a menu that refuses to pick a lane, which somehow works perfectly. 47. A short walk from the European institutions, this contemporary restaurant makes a point of sourcing from Wallonia's larder, cycling through asparagus in spring and wild game come autumn. The room fills with regulars who never need the menu and international arrivals who do, and the sommelier is the kind who actually steers you somewhere interesting. Classic regional cooking, lightly recalibrated for a city crowd without losing the plot.

  48. Rank 306. Max & Moi

A refurbished town house on the main square, with the kind of colour palette that suggests someone actually thought about it. This is a modern French restaurant running four- or five-course menus, where the kitchen leans on local produce and classical technique in equal measure. The chef has a way with the quiet details, a beurre blanc, a carrot reimagined with béarnaise, that signals someone who cooked seriously before settling here.

This is a modern French restaurant with a menu that swings between classical and international without losing its footing. 54. An Italian bistro on the Rue Américaine where the tables fill early with people ordering in Italian, which tells you most of what you need to know. The chef has a thing for sea urchin and squid, and takes enough liberties with the menu to keep things interesting without losing the plot. The à la carte runs long, Mediterranean in spirit, and the crowd tends to linger.

  55. Rank 306. Samouraï

    Japanese

A large bonsai anchors the room at this old-school Japanese restaurant on Avenue Louise, where the terracotta walls and Asian art give it the calm of somewhere that has never felt the need to keep up. The menu runs from sushi and sashimi to sukiyaki finished tableside, with bento boxes drawing a crowd at lunch and set menus keeping evenings orderly. Been around forever, and carries itself accordingly.

  56. Tableside filleting of the seabass is a nice reminder that this Italian restaurant on the village square hasn't forgotten how to make a moment of it. The chef keeps portions generous and the cooking rooted in Italian produce, with a wine list deep enough to get lost in. The cottage setting manages to feel both spacious and unfussy, and when the weather cooperates, the terrace earns its place. An old-school institution that never seems to need updating.

  57. The Cubist-inspired facade on a quiet Woluwe avenue doesn't prepare you for how cheerful and airy it is inside. This is a modern, farm-to-table restaurant where the kitchen takes seasonal cooking seriously but keeps a light touch, spinning classic combinations into something unexpected. A caprese salad gets textural surprises; pollock arrives with leek-flavored ice cream. Surprise tasting menus, including a vegetarian option, mean you hand over the wheel and see what happens.

  58. Rank 306. Stirwen

    Modern French

The chef at this modern French restaurant in Brussels' European quarter has a habit of wandering out of the kitchen mid-service to explain, in patient detail, exactly what he just did to your plate. It's that kind of place: polished and comfortable, with cooking that takes classic Gallic technique somewhere a little less expected. The room draws a crowd that knows its way around a wine list and never seems to be in a hurry.

  59. Rank 306. Toit

    Sardinian

A window manufacturer opened a restaurant on the roof of its own showroom, which tracks: the floor-to-ceiling glass frames views of the Belgian countryside that would sell itself. Inside, the cooking is Sardinian by way of French technique, bold and full-bodied in a way that earns the setting. The menu rotates every six weeks, so regulars have a reason to keep coming back and pretending they planned it that way.

  60. Rank 306. Umā

    Japanese

A whitewashed brick facade on a quiet side street near Porte de Namur, Umā is a relaxed bistro where the kitchen fuses Japanese technique with South American heat. Tuna sashimi comes in a shiso-and-dashi broth, duck arrives medium rare with curry and vadouvan, and a thread of gentle spice runs through the whole menu. The à la carte and set menus both cover the same territory, so the choice is really just how hungry you are.

  61. Rank 306. Vismet

    Seafood

Vismet sits on the old fish market square at Place Sainte-Catherine, which tells you something about how seriously Brussels takes its seafood history. It's a classic seafood restaurant with an open kitchen and the kind of lived-in room that clearly predates the neighborhood's gentrification. The cooking is traditional and unshowy: pristine sole, properly made sauces, ingredients that don't need dressing up. Come hungry, not overdressed.

  62. Rank 362. La Pizza è Bella

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

Fried pizza sits on the menu alongside the classics at this Neapolitan pizza spot in the Sablon, which tells you the kitchen is not here to play it safe. The dough runs thin at the center in proper Neapolitan fashion, and the five-cheese pie is the one regulars tend to circle back to. The room is nicely turned out and draws a well-traveled crowd. Service can be a little loose around the edges, so patience helps.

  63. Rank 363. ‘naPizzà

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A Neapolitan pizza shop tucked into Etterbeek where the staff will happily make you something off-menu if you ask nicely, which tells you most of what you need to know about the room. The dough is soft and light, the ingredients are the kind that make you notice the ingredients, and the cacio e pepe pizza lands creamy and sharp without tipping into heavy. It ranked 59th on 50 Top Pizza Europe, which is a long way from nothing for a neighborhood spot in Brussels.

  64. Rank 363. Educazione napoletana

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A portrait of Maradona watches over the wood-fired oven at this Neapolitan pizza spot in Ixelles, and the menu follows suit: margherita, marinara, the classics, treated with enough seriousness that no one needs to explain the point. The crust leans contemporary, with a puffier cornicione than the old guard might prefer, and the fried starters hold their own. A neighborhood place that knows exactly what it is.

  65. Rank 363. La Bottega della Pizza

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A Neapolitan pizza shop in the heart of Brussels that started, as many do, as a cure for homesickness and ended up pulling in everyone else on the block too. The dough is contemporary Neapolitan style, the ingredients are mostly sourced from Italy, and the whole operation runs on a refreshingly short set of principles. A good beer list keeps things honest. Two locations now, which tells its own story.

  66. Rank 363. Marcella

    Pizzeria

A pizzeria just off the Avenue Louise that leans into the raw-wood, exposed-structure aesthetic favored by establishments that know exactly what they're doing. The dough is well-leavened, the oven is wood-fired, and a bottarga and burrata pizza with lemon zest has become the one everyone orders. An Italian wine list longer than expected rounds things out, and the bread arrives with good olive oil before anyone asks.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
