Sections

Tap to add or drop a section. At least one stays on.

The best places in Finland, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, the White Guide, and The 50 have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Palace comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Helsinki.

More Less

Grön and Kaskis hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the White Guide next.

  1. Rank 1. Palace

    Japanese

The South Harbour spreads out ten floors below while the chefs bring you your food themselves, which sets the tone. Palace is a dinner-only tasting menu restaurant where Finnish chef Eero Vottonen pulls Japanese technique across Nordic ingredients, and it holds two Michelin stars. Expect fifteen or so courses, seasonally reworked, with a lightness that keeps the length from feeling like a marathon.

  2. Shelves crammed with fermenting jars line the walls, which tells you something about where this two-Michelin-starred creative restaurant's priorities lie. Dinner runs in two seatings, and the chefs serve and explain each course themselves. Vegetables come from the team's own garden, everything else from within Finland. The room is small and warm, and the whole operation has the unhurried ease of people who genuinely like what they're doing.

  3. The empty beer bottles get blown into water glasses, which tells you a lot about how this intimate tasting menu restaurant thinks. Chef Eric Mansikka runs a surprise menu built around foraged herbs, mushrooms, and flowers alongside ingredients from local farmers and fishermen. The kitchen is open, the sommelier's pairings are well-matched, and the whole thing moves with quiet precision. It holds a Michelin star.

  4. Rank 3. Olo

    Contemporary Nordic

A yellow townhouse across from the pier, minimalist inside in a way that feels considered rather than cold. This is a Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant leaning hard into the Finnish north, where moose, elk, and reindeer show up on tasting menus alongside ingredients you'd need a map to source. The kitchen makes its own non-alcoholic pairings, which takes real conviction in a wine-pairing world.

  5. A code to open the side door, a lift to the 14th floor of an office building, and then, somehow, a Michelin-starred tasting menu restaurant with a view over Helsinki. The modern open kitchen runs the show, and the set menu pulls classical technique through quality local and international ingredients. The bread alone has been known to stop conversation. Dinner here feels like a secret you had to earn.

  6. The rooms at this literary hotel are named for the Finnish writers and thinkers who once convened in this very building, which gives unpacking your suitcase a faintly scholarly air. Facing Old Church Park in Kamppi, St. George is a full-service hotel with Scandinavian-luxe suites, a greenhouse-style bar that locals use as a living room, a Thai restaurant, and a bakery doing brisk morning trade.

  7. A Michelin-starred tasting menu restaurant in Helsinki's Design District, where the dishes have names like "Charcoal Foam" and quietly contain multitudes. The chef forages, ferments, and leans hard on regenerative farms to keep the menu locked to what Finland's seasons actually allow. The philosophy is about reconnecting with the land, which sounds earnest until the food arrives and makes the case without saying a word.

  9. A former chocolate factory in Porvoo's Old Town, now a Michelin-starred modern restaurant where dried flowers line the walls and the menu reads like a quiet argument for staying local. The kitchen draws from the surrounding region with the seriousness of people who genuinely have nowhere else they'd rather be. Dishes arrive immaculately composed, flavours careful and precisely judged. The historic shell and the sleek interior make for an interesting tension that the food quietly matches.

A sign outside the kitchen reads "We are Ladies and Gentlemen Serving Ladies and Gentlemen," and the room makes good on it, warm and unhurried in a way that Helsinki restaurants sometimes forget to be. This is a classic European restaurant where the cooking leans traditional but isn't afraid of a modern turn, and the regulars who fill it clearly know something. The set lunch is the move if you're watching the bill.

  13. Empty wine bottles stand in as vases on the square black tables, which tells you most of what you need to know about this cozy Finnish bistro in the quiet Kruununhaka neighborhood. The menu rotates every few weeks to track the seasons, with daily specials chalked on a blackboard. Locals fill the two dimly lit rooms for unfussy regional cooking from a team that greets everyone like a regular.

  26. Rank 34. 305

    Modern Nordic Bistro

A three-storey building in Helsinki's north end houses this easygoing modern bistro, which earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand doing the kind of Nordic cooking that sounds humble until it isn't. The menu leans into rustic bistronomy, wild herbs, foraged fruit, local fish, balanced with enough technique to keep things interesting. Prices stay sensible, service stays warm, and the room hums with the particular energy of a neighborhood place that people have quietly claimed as their own.

  27. The cocktail bar is named for the family dog, who is himself named for an architect, which tells you a lot about how this small, family-run hotel operates. Sitting across from Esplanadi Park in central Helsinki, it keeps things calm despite the location: blond wood, spare Nordic rooms with good beds, and a courtyard lounge that earns its keep in warmer months. No restaurant, but central Helsinki hardly leaves you stuck.

    The awards

  28. The sweeping stone staircase that leads to the ballroom tells you everything about what kind of hotel this is, a grand old dame on Esplanade Park where Sibelius once held court. Rooms come with marble bathrooms, the largest suites have their own saunas, and the spa covers everyone else. A full renovation is underway in phases, so expect some flux until 2026, though the hotel stays open throughout.

    The awards

  29. The rounded windows alone are reason enough to book a room. Hotel Lilla Roberts occupies a building that started life as a power station and has been collecting architectural layers ever since, the current interior landing on Art Deco geometry, dark tones, and gold accents that feel glamorous without trying too hard. The lobby fireplace and Bar Lilla keep guests from wandering far, and the pan-Nordic bistro next door gives dinner a reason to stay in the neighborhood.

    The awards

  30. A lifestyle hotel in Helsinki's Design District where the 170 rooms range from crisp Nordic minimalism to five art rooms commissioned from Finnish designers, so you might sleep under work that belongs in a gallery. It sits at the top of the Esplanade, surrounded by furniture showrooms, which tells you something about the clientele. A rooftop bar opens in summer, and the Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels.

    The awards

  31. A restored 1920s printing house beside Old Church Park, with the industrial bones left intact under warm modern design. The hotel runs from loft rooms with private terraces up to top-floor suites overlooking the park, with an Italian-style trattoria, courtyard, and atmospheric bars filling the social hours in between. Saunas, a gym, and Kamppi's shopping close by keep things practical. Helsinki's galleries and Bulevardi landmarks are right on the doorstep.

    The awards

  32. The building was once the House of Master Builders, which gives this full-service hotel in central Helsinki a certain old-guild gravitas that the industrial-chic interiors lean into rather than apologize for. Rooms are spacious by city-center standards, there's a gym and sauna, and the Social Bar & Bistro handles bistro fare for when you'd rather not venture out. Transport and the main sights are close enough to walk.

    The awards

  33. Marimekko fabrics in the suites signal what kind of hotel this is before you've even checked in. Hobo Helsinki is a modernist boutique in the center of the city, a short walk from the main rail station, with clean geometric rooms and a street food restaurant called TRAY downstairs. The neighborhood is dense with bars and galleries, which is convenient given how little reason there is to stay in.

    The awards

  34. Warm mid-century Nordic design in a boutique hotel a short walk from the Market Place, with rooms built around light palettes and the occasional bold accent. Breakfast comes out of an open kitchen with a generous local buffet, and the lobby bar handles evenings at a low hum. The setup is intentionally pared back, which suits the neighborhood perfectly. The Michelin Guide includes it in its hotel selection.

    The awards

  35. A boutique hotel facing Helsinki's Market Square, Hotel Haven occupies a handsome old stone building and leans hard into what the Michelin Guide calls "cozy classicism," which turns out to mean the opposite of the cold minimalist Scandi cliché you were bracing for. Rooms run Comfort, Style, and Lux, and those names are unusually honest: beds are oversized and plush, bathrooms properly indulgent, and Bang & Olufsen equipment throughout for the audiophile who forgot their own.

    The awards

  36. Murals by local artists cover the walls of this Design District hotel on Bulevardi, which puts you a short walk from galleries, boutiques, and some of Helsinki's better restaurants. Rooms lean into Nordic aesthetics without overdoing the reindeer motifs, and a courtyard terrace earns its keep in summer. The Michelin Guide lists it among its selected hotels, which is the kind of quiet endorsement that matters when you're choosing a neighborhood to sleep in.

    The awards

  37. Leather safari animals and bird-shaped lamps scattered through a 117-room boutique hotel a short walk from Esplanadi Park: Hotel U14 makes a case that Scandinavian restraint and controlled whimsy can share a room. The Autograph Collection property runs a sauna, gym, and a cocktail bar alongside a sustainability pitch that doesn't feel like homework. Helsinki's harbor and design quarter are right outside.

    The awards

  38. Reindeer antlers and wool throws bring Finland's far north into a Punavuori townhouse, and most of the hundred-plus rooms come with a private sauna so the Nordic ritual stays intact. This design hotel also runs Kultá Kitchen & Bar, where northern flavors anchor an inventive multi-course menu. The whole place is calibrated to make Helsinki feel slower than it actually is, which is either what you came for or an unexpected gift.

    The awards

  39. The Ateljee Bar on the top floor has been Helsinki's open secret for decades, the kind of perch where the whole city lays itself out below you. Down below, the Art Deco bones of this old-school hotel have been sharpened up without being sanitized, with original Finnish art on the walls and enough distinct bars to suit any mood, including, somehow, an Irish pub. Steps from the Design District and Esplanadi Park.

    The awards

  40. Two historic buildings on Helsinki's main boulevard, one a former student union in Art Nouveau style, the other the city's oldest hotel, now merged into a single property with sleek Scandinavian rooms and suites. Ceilings run improbably high, arched windows frame the train station across the street, and the rooftop bar inside the dome tower has the views everyone comes for. A Michelin Selected Hotel.

    The awards

  41. Finnish design studio Fyra handled the interiors, and the industrial-chic result lands somewhere between a creative agency and a hotel lobby, which is probably the point. This 195-room city hotel sits a short walk from Central Station with views over Kaisaniemi Park. The ground-floor bar and kitchen runs all day, a summer terrace opens when Helsinki cooperates, and there's a sauna, because of course there is.

    The awards

  42. A sculptural timber building on the Katajanokka waterfront, designed by Anttinen Oiva Architects, sets the tone before you've even checked in. This hotel smells faintly of pine, which turns out not to be a gimmick but a side effect of all that pale wood inside. Finnish art, sea views from many rooms, a sauna, and a rooftop terrace keep you from leaving, which is probably the point.

    The awards

  43. Four historic buildings stitched into a single luxury boutique hotel, and one of those rooms is a chapel, which tells you a lot about Helsinki's sense of proportion. The 117 rooms lean into retro glamour without tipping into costume drama, and nearly a third are suites. Downstairs there are intimate lounges, a bar, a sauna, a Turkish bath, and a spa. The Michelin Guide lists it among its selected hotels.

    The awards

  44. Some of the rooms here come with private saunas, which tells you something about where you are. Scandic Paasi is a hotel in Helsinki's Siltasaari district that goes hard on color: the lobby runs the full spectrum, and the guest rooms each pick a lane and commit. The building reads historic from the outside, but inside the furnishings are unapologetically modern. The bar runs late; the restaurant handles breakfast and leaves dinner to the neighborhood.

    The awards

  45. Ring the doorbell and you're in, which sets the tone nicely for this cozy, invite-only-feeling cocktail bar where agave runs the show so completely that there is no gin on the list at all. Two of the three Negroni riffs lean on tequila or mezcal, the snack menu is mostly cheese, and somehow that combination makes perfect sense. A Difford's Guide pick and a The 50 Discovery selection.

  46. Rank 54. Bona Fide

    Modern Mediterranean

A blue-and-white bistro tucked between Helsinki Cathedral and the waterfront, Bona Fide runs on two set menus that change regularly and stay keenly priced, a Bib Gourmand to its name. The kitchen leans modern Mediterranean, pulling combinations that sound unlikely on paper, asparagus with nori, rhubarb with Earl Grey and lemongrass, and making them feel inevitable. The room is small and cheerful, the kind of place that fills up with locals who already know the drill.

    The awards

  47. The name means "zero," and the kitchen takes that seriously, composting scraps, sourcing from like-minded small producers, and stitching staff uniforms from old bed linen. It's a lively neighbourhood restaurant with hearty Finnish cooking, and the chef's choice menu is the move, or grab a counter seat at the chef's table if you want to watch the whole operation up close. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  48. Tables built from 300-year-old pine floorboards set the tone at this Art Nouveau hotel beside Porvoo Old Town's gate. Studio Joanna Laajisto's redesign layers modern Nordic interiors over a building steeped in Finnish literary lore, with restored tile fireplaces, hand-painted wall panels, and bathroom towel racks made from salvaged farm equipment. The attic sauna is wood-warmed and unhurried. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  50. Rank 57. The Firm

    Cocktail Bar

Cocktails named after their ingredients, Hazelnut & Honey or Cola & Port, so you know exactly what you're getting into. The Firm is a dim, late-night cocktail bar in Kallio that recently merged with its sister restaurant next door, which means small plates are now on hand if the drinks start winning. The seasonal, local approach extends to a solid zero-proof list for anyone pretending to take it easy.

    The awards

  51. Rank 59. Forza

    Pizzeria

A Neapolitan-style pizza restaurant in a bright, roomy space that somehow avoids the rustic-trattoria cliché Helsinki has seen plenty of. The dough is the thing here: well-cooked with enough structure that a loaded slice holds its shape rather than folding into a sad triangle. Some ingredients come straight from Italy, and the kitchen has a light touch with bold combinations. It ranked 25th on 50 Top Pizza Europe, which for Finland is a long way from the usual suspects.

  52. A 26-seat dinner spot near the marina with green walls, oak parquet, and black bistro chairs, Aoi has the calm confidence of a place that knows it doesn't need to be bigger. Two friends turned a pop-up into something permanent, and the short four-course menu shifts with the season. The cooking is precise and quietly inventive, the kind that makes you wonder why more restaurants don't just do this instead.

  53. Exposed brick and bare pipework set the scene at this French brasserie named, with good reason, after Brigitte Bardot. The menu reads like a greatest-hits of the genre: steak au poivre, tarte Tatin, a daily menu du jour for anyone who likes value alongside their Gallic comfort. The wine list leans predictably but pleasantly French, and the team moves a packed room along without breaking a sweat.

  54. Rank 60. Bistro Ego

    Japanese-influenced French

A spiral staircase drops you into a brick cellar with moody lighting if the upstairs room, all earthy tones and a big modern canvas, feels too lively. This neighborhood bistro runs on a genuinely unusual idea: French classics with a Japanese edit, so the menu lands somewhere between Lyon and Tokyo without fully belonging to either. The kind of place Helsinki does quietly and well, with no fanfare about it.

  58. Rank 60. Flor

    Wine Bar

Finnish wood and compostable clay paint give this relaxed restaurant and wine bar a warmth that most places fake with Edison bulbs. Flor sits on a busy pedestrian street and runs a short à la carte alongside a surprise menu, bread through dessert, built around clean, freshly made dishes that move quickly. The sibling of the Green Star-awarded Natura next door, it carries the family instinct for good ingredients without the ceremony.

    The awards

  59. Rank 60. Gaijin

    Modern Pan-Asian

  60. Rank 60. Kajo

    Creative Pan-Asian

Directly across from Tampere Central Station, Kajo is a small creative restaurant where the kitchen pairs Nordic ingredients with Asian technique, think chawanmushi, sea buckthorn, Arctic cloudberry. The chef serves and explains each dish himself, which sounds precious but lands warmly. The wine pairings are thoughtful, and the stocks and sauces hint at a kitchen working considerably harder than the modest room might suggest.

  61. Thirteen seats at an L-shaped basement counter, all filled at once, because this is an omakase restaurant that runs on two sittings and waits for nobody. 66. Puu-Vallila is one of those Helsinki neighbourhoods that looks like someone forgot to tear it down, all pastel wooden houses and winding lanes, and plein fits right in, occupying a former butcher's shop at its edge. The kind of place where you eat what the kitchen has decided, and find yourself glad they decided.

  68. Rank 60. Smör

    Modern Nordic

Vaulted stone ceilings from a 19th-century riverside merchant's house set the stage for a modern Nordic restaurant that has no interest in picking a lane between old and new. The kitchen leans into that tension, pairing traditional techniques with contemporary plating and the kind of ingredient sourcing that takes Finland's larder seriously. The kitchen team bring out many dishes themselves, and the sommelier is worth listening to.

    The awards

  69. A fork has been embedded in one of the walls for years, and nobody seems inclined to remove it. Spis is a cozy modern Finnish restaurant with only five tables, high ceilings, and exposed brick that leans vaguely industrial. The chefs describe every dish themselves, so by the end of the evening you've spent more time talking about food than most people do in a week. The cooking is vegetable-forward and quietly inventive.

    The awards

  70. A modern restaurant in the residential Töölö neighborhood, where a scallop arrives both raw and as a dried powder dusted over cabbage salad, which tells you exactly the kind of cooking to expect. The tasting menu leans into seasonality, building dishes around texture and acidity in ways that feel considered without being fussy. Wine pairings are on offer, and the portions are generous enough that no one leaves calculating whether they ate enough.

  71. Rank 79. 450°C

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The name tells you the temperature a Neapolitan pizza needs, and the kitchen at this Turku slice shop takes that seriously. The dough is soft and properly blistered, the crust kept low in the Naples style, and a plain Margherita is the thing to order first. There are two locations in the city; the original is spartan, the Market Hall outpost a little more dressed up. Pasta is on the menu too. Ranked 27th on 50 Top Pizza Europe.

  73. Stylized antlers hang above the beds, a quiet nod to the Lapland hotel group's northern roots, and the bigger suites come with private saunas, because this is Finland and of course they do. A boutique hotel in Tampere's second-city center, it wears an unremarkable exterior but delivers elegant, pared-back rooms inside. The restaurant, Dabbal, draws from the far-north forests for its menu.

    The awards

  74. Each glasshouse cabin at this high-design Lapland resort has its own private sauna and a picture window at the foot of the bed pointed straight at the forest, which is either deeply romantic or deeply disorienting, depending on the jet lag. In winter the Northern Lights do the decorating; in summer the midnight sun keeps things interesting. The restaurant leans into moose and reindeer, because of course it does.

    The awards

  75. Glass igloos built for watching the Northern Lights from a horizontal position: that's the premise, and the resort commits to it completely. Most guests actually stay in log cabins with observation domes attached, which means a private sauna and a skylight view rather than sleeping in what is, technically, a snow globe. Husky safaris, reindeer treks, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing fill the days, with a full outdoor program running through summer too.

  76. Lakeside cabins in Lapland, close enough to Rovaniemi to reach easily and remote enough that the Northern Lights show up uninvited. Skyra Retreat is a design-forward wilderness lodge where Finnish luxury and Finnish suffering coexist peacefully: the sauna-to-frozen-lake plunge is available whenever you feel brave, and the spa is there when you don't. Summer excursions run alongside winter ones, because Lapland's warm months are their own quiet argument for returning.

  77. Four cube-shaped villas sit above the Finnish Lapland treeline, each one angled so the panoramic windows frame the kind of landscape that makes you forget what you were worrying about. The interiors run to wood, stone, and fur, with jacuzzis, saunas, and fireplaces doing the work of keeping things warm while the Northern Lights do their thing outside. Winter brings dogsledding and snowmobiles; summer flips to hiking and Sámi cultural experiences.

  78. Rank 86. The Grand Bar & Grill

    Nordic Steakhouse

The open fire grill anchors everything at this Nordic steakhouse in central Helsinki, where Finnish dry-aged beef meets Scandinavian restraint in a room of warm wood and soft light. The kitchen's approach is about control rather than spectacle, letting heat coax out flavour without theatrics. It holds a spot on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, which feels fitting for somewhere so quietly sure of itself.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
