A full kitchen in a few square feet, parked wherever the permit allows: the food trucks the critics and guides have tracked down and honored. Ranked, wherever they happen to be parked this week.

  1. Rank 1. KG BBQ

    Middle Eastern Barbecue

A Michelin Bib Gourmand BBQ truck parked next to Oddwood Brewing, where the line forms early and the menu swings between Texas smoke and Cairo spice. The chef traded a finance career for a pit, and the result is brisket country seasoned with sumac, cinnamon, and pomegranate. Texas Monthly named it among the state's best BBQ joints, and the crowd agrees, loudly, with their mouths full.

  2. Rank 2. Cuantos Tacos

    Mexico City-style

The suadero taco here, finished with nothing but onion and cilantro, is what draws a line to this East Austin food truck. The meat cooks in a traditional chorizera pan, and the bright yellow masa tortillas come out paper-thin and full of flavor. Mexico City-style is the whole brief, kept tight. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a New York Times pick. Order at the window, find a spot in the shared picnic area, and don't skip the grilled onions.

  3. The name is a riff on barbacoa, which tells you exactly where to focus at this East Austin taco trailer. Picnic tables sit under shade and fans, and the barbacoa itself is slow and serious, folded into tacos with pinto beans and chicharrón or wrapped in a beet-red tortilla with gooey cheese. A Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard semifinalist nod confirm what the line already suggests. A second location has since opened on 6th Street.

  5. Rank 5. Mi Rinconcito Oaxaqueño

    Traditional Oaxacan Food Truck

A food truck parked at a gas station on San Carlos, serving some of the only serious Oaxacan food in the Bay Area. The tlayuda alone justifies the trip: a tortilla imported from Oaxaca, loaded with asiento, black bean puree, quesillo, and three meats, arriving in a pizza box if you order takeout. Eat at the picnic tables while it's still crisp. Memelas, enmoladas, and a menu that reads like a regional education round things out.

  6. Rank 5. Spot Palace

    Food Truck

    The awards

  7. Rank 7. El Taconazo

    Mexican Food Truck

The hood of your car doubles as your table at this late-night taco truck on Fulton, where the line forms fast after the bars close and moves just as fast. Fajita tacos with Oaxacan cheese and a creamy green salsa that bites back are the reason to show up, along with a Mexican Coke cold enough to justify the wait. No seating, no frills, just the sidewalk and whoever else is hungry at this hour.

  8. Rank 9. Baja Roots AZ

    Baja Food Truck

Tijuana-style street food from a truck usually parked outside Cobra Arcade Bar on Second Street, running until 2 a.m. on weekends for a reason. The chef behind the counter built a menu around classics like tacos al pastor and vampiros, then added birria ramen for anyone who wants to confuse their stomach in the best way. Phoenix New Times named it the top late-night Mexican food truck two years running, which tracks with the crowd spilling out of nearby bars.

  9. Rank 10. Mariscos El Aguachile 8

    Mexican Food Truck

A seafood truck parked at a gas station on Alum Rock, and the San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's top Mexican and seafood spots. The heat runs twelve levels deep, and the team quietly suggests you stop at three. There's no menu, just a base of shrimp that grows as you add octopus, scallops, and sea snails. The aguachile will make your eyes water in a way that somehow doesn't make you stop eating it.

  10. Rank 11. Adelfa’s Comida Cubana

    Traditional Cuban Food Truck

  11. Rank 11. Debbie's

    Food Truck

Debbie's is a small downtown hot dog counter where the weiners get the kind of toppings you'd expect on a plate with a tasting menu, like creamy leeks, dijon, dill, and a crunch of Potato Stix. The chef came over from a late, lamented barbecue joint, which explains the sandwiches and sides. There are a couple of outdoor seats for people watching, or you can carry your dogs to the river and eat them like a civilized person.

  12. Rank 11. El Bombero 408

    Baja Food Truck

A pair of food trucks running Tijuana-style tacos around San Jose, with a charcoal grill and a spinning trompo on weekends that explains the line before you even smell the smoke. The chicharron fundido, a giant handmade corn tortilla loaded with crackly pork belly and melted cheese, is the kind of thing that makes "just a quick taco" a laughable plan. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best tacos in the Bay Area.

  13. Rank 11. El Vaquero

    Yucatecan

A street stand named for a cab driver whose wife's cochinita pibil recipes pulled him into the food business. The slow-cooked pork gets loaded into Yucatán-style pan francés, finished with pickled onions and a habanero salsa that earns its heat. Tacos and lechón are available too, but the torta is what draws people to the picnic bench on Avenida Kukulkan. Eater named it among the best Tulum restaurants.

  14. Rank 11. Freiduría Puerta de la Carne

    Sevillano Spanish Food Truck

This is a fry shop near the Santa Cruz quarter, where fried fish is a staple on most menus in town and the specialty here. You order by weight, a mixed quarter kilo of squid, shrimp, roe, and the vinegar-marinated anchovies Seville insists on, and it arrives in paper. The usual move is a cold Cruzcampo and a walk to the Jardines de Murillo, where you eat on a bench like a local with better planning.

  15. Rank 11. Loncheria Los Mayas

    Yucatecan Food Truck

  16. Rank 11. Mi Lindo Apatzingán

    Michoacán Food Truck

A food truck parked outside an auto repair shop on South First, Mi Lindo Apatzingán serves the kind of hyper-regional Michoacán cooking that doesn't turn up often anywhere in the Bay Area. The birria de lengua taco, beef tongue simmered in adobo until it collapses into sticky cubes, is the thing to order. Morisqueta, rice under soupy beans with stewed ribs, is worth the detour on its own. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best tacos in the Bay Area.

  20. A nomadic chalupa stand that bounces around northern Queens, posting intersections on Facebook like a food truck that's read too much Kerouac. Track it down and you're rewarded with tortillas fried in hot lard, then loaded with shredded pork, white onion, and whichever salsa you choose, or both. The New York Times named it among New York's top dishes of 2024 and ranked it on their 100 Best Restaurants list. Eight chalupas run about ten dollars.

  24. Rank 23. Bodhi Viet Veggie Cuisine

    Vegan Vietnamese Food Truck

  25. Rank 23. Feral Pizza

    Pizzeria

Parked near a gas station in North Loop, Feral is a food truck doing two distinct styles of pizza: thin, crispy sourdough rounds and pan pies with the sauce on top, both finished with garlic oil. The pan pizza is the more interesting argument. Order ahead if you're impatient, because the devoted regulars who've adopted this place keep the line moving at its own pace.

  26. A corn-dog-on-a-stick that's been a State Fair of Texas fixture for generations, now available year-round from a permanent food truck in Klyde Warren Park, which means skipping the August heat and the parking odyssey. The batter recipe is a family secret the Fletchers have kept close, and nobody has managed to copy it convincingly. Mustard is the traditional move. Cash, a short wait, and low expectations for your diet are all you need to bring.

  28. Rank 23. Spice Waala

    Indian Food Truck

Spice Waala started as a pop-up and has since grown to three locations, which tells you something about how fast the kathi rolls travel by word of mouth. It's a casual counter-service spot doing Indian street food, and the chutneys alone justify the trip. Paneer, lamb, or chicken tikka in a roll, aloo tikki with dipping sauces, and a rotating soft serve with flavors drawn from Indian cuisine round out a menu that's both short and hard to edit.

  30. Rank 36. Ladyboy

    Thai Food Truck

A Thai food truck in Roma, lit up with neon and a shelf of sauce bottles, where diners huddle around the stand with a plate of spicy corn salad or marinated pork over coconut rice. Food trucks can't pour liquor, so a zero-alcohol beer handles the fire, which is the closest thing to a house rule. It works as a loud, cheap warm-up before the bars nearby, and The Infatuation put it on its list of Roma's best.

  31. Rank 36. Roti Roll Bombay Frankie

    Mumbai Indian Food Truck

  32. A purple orchid tops every plate, which tells you something about how seriously this Thai street-food truck takes its work. Hiw Kaow roams the Valley without a permanent address, serving pad Thai with a Lao influence, crispy whole chicken wings, and a papaya salad sharp enough to make you check the truck's next location before you've finished eating. Follow its schedule; it moves around.

  33. Rank 39. TONG_NYC

    Bengali Food Truck

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
