Counter stools, booths, a griddle that never cools down, and coffee that keeps getting refilled: the American diner at its best. These are the diners with honors to their name, ranked.

  1. Rank 1. Lazy Bear

    New American

Diners get a pencil and a field notebook on arrival, which sets the tone for what Lazy Bear is doing: a two Michelin star tasting menu dressed up as a very fancy campout. The bi-level warehouse reads like a mogul's hunting lodge, and the kitchen runs childhood comfort food through a fine-dining fever dream, think PB&J reimagined with duck liver mousse. Five sommeliers are on staff, each with a distinct specialty, which is either reassuring or a lot.

  2. Rank 2. Mister Jiu's

    Modern Chinese

Salvaged gold floral chandeliers hang over lazy Susans in a high-ceilinged Chinatown room where Brandon Jew, a James Beard Award winner with a Michelin star, reworks the Cantonese cooking of his youth with California produce and genuine affection. The scallion milk bread with honey butter and the Peking duck are the two things regulars pretend they're deciding between, then order both. Dress up slightly more than you think San Francisco requires.

  3. Dim sum carts wheel through a loud, industrial-chic room in the Fillmore, carrying seasonal California small plates you flag down as they pass. You build the meal yourself, which sounds chaotic and mostly is, in the good way. The cooking leans eclectic and comfort-forward, and the Michelin star suggests someone in the kitchen knows exactly what they're doing. Reservations disappear fast; the walk-in line forms before the doors open.

  4. Rank 4. Angler SF

    Seafood

A wood-burning hearth anchors the open kitchen at this Michelin-starred seafood restaurant on the Embarcadero, and the live fire finds its way into nearly everything on the plate. The room goes hunter's cabin by way of Nordic design, with Bay Bridge views softening whatever pretension the dark wood and brick might otherwise suggest. The raw bar runs to purple sea urchin and antelope tartare, because apparently the ocean alone wasn't enough of a challenge.

  5. Tucked into an alcove of the Parc 55 hotel, this modern Thai restaurant holds a Michelin star and earns it without any of the usual fanfare. Chef Pim Techamuanvivit cooks the food she grew up eating in Bangkok, rooted in tradition but built around Northern California produce from small local farms. The spice levels are sincere rather than decorative, and a few dishes will require a moment of quiet reflection before the next bite.

  6. Rank 4. Nari

    Thai

Exposed pipes, factory windows, and earthy ceramics inside Hotel Kabuki set a mood that Thai restaurants rarely bother with. Nari holds a Michelin star for chef Pim Techamuanvivit's California-ingredient-driven cooking, which runs through a sharply contemporary Thai lens. The family-style menu changes with the seasons, so the squid, the curries, and the banana leaf parcels shift, but the kitchen's intensity doesn't. If you can't get a table, the upstairs bar takes walk-ins.

  7. Menus printed on pineapple-leaf paper set the tone at this intimate tasting counter in Nob Hill, where the team reimagines Filipino pantry staples through fermentation, foraging, and the kind of tweezered precision that signals a long night ahead (in the good way). The twelve-course menu pulls Californian foraged ingredients into dishes rooted in tradition without being enslaved to it. Dressed-up but not stiff, the sort of place that earns its formality by actually being fun.

  8. Custom lychee wood charcoal does the work at this Korean charcoal BBQ spot in the Mission, where Corey Lee and Jeong-In Hwang bring serious fine-dining technique to galbi and kimchi jjigae. The space is polished concrete and warm wood, which sounds cold on paper but lands somewhere close to cozy. A Michelin star, and reservations to match. Come with people you like, because the menu was built for sharing.

  9. Walls plastered with Polaroids and faded Cantopop posters set the mood at this Chinatown restaurant, where the cooking is as high-energy as the room. The menu is compact Cantonese with a loose, playful hand: claypot rice with bacon and sausage, mapo tofu spaghetti that shouldn't work but clearly does. Reservations vanish fast, and the walk-in line forms before doors open. Bon Appétit and Esquire both named it among America's best new restaurants in 2024.

  10. Rank 10. Nisei

    Japanese

Dark walls, timber counters, and a semi-open kitchen that lets the room feel the precision behind each plate. Nisei is a twelve-course Japanese tasting counter on Polk Street, where chef David Yoshimura builds a menu around the Japanese-American experience he grew up inside. The food moves between tradition and something harder to name, with technique that never announces itself. It holds a Michelin star.

  11. The name means "simmered," which tells you something about the chef's approach: unhurried, precise, nothing showing off. This is a casual French prix-fixe counter in the Mission, built around a weekly four-course menu that follows Northern California's seasons and a natural wine list that would feel at home in a Paris cave. The chef trained in France via Japan, and the room, all warm wood and open kitchen, has the nerve to be unpretentious about it. A James Beard nominee.

  12. Rank 12. Copra

    South Indian

The name refers to dried coconut meat, which tells you roughly where the kitchen's head is at. Srijith Gopinathan's South Indian restaurant fills a lush, two-story corner room in the Fillmore that photographs well and eats even better. The sharing menu runs from a palette of housemade chutneys with pappadom to shell-on crab curry, the kind of sticky, tamarind-dark sauce that renders your outfit a casualty. A James Beard semifinalist and ranked fourth on the Chronicle's Bay Area top 100.

  13. The burritos here skip the rice, which Mission purists treat as either heresy or gospel depending on which taqueria they grew up on. Order yours dorado-style and the kitchen presses it on the plancha until the tortilla blisters gold. Counter service, cash-register lines out the door, no frills beyond the food. The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times have both made the pilgrimage to this old-school Mission taqueria, which tells you something about the burritos.

  14. Rank 14. Cotogna

    Italian

A wood flame burns in the hearth, thin slats line the ceiling, and a gleaming copper bar anchors the room, which tells you everything about where Cotogna sits on the rustic-to-refined spectrum. This is an Italian restaurant where the suited FiDi crowd fills tables at lunch and families slide in beside couples at dinner. The single raviolo, one egg in browned butter, is the move. Deep Italian wine list, lovely outdoor parklet.

  15. A mural of Fillmore Street circa 1962 covers the wall, which makes sense given that the chef grew up in the neighborhood and spent years dreaming of bringing her soul food restaurant here. The rosemary fried chicken, fragrant with fresh herbs and marinated in housemade spices, is the reason people line up, though the butter cornbread and mac and cheese give it real competition. Bon Appétit named it one of America's Best New Restaurants in 2025.

  16. Rank 14. Zuni Café

    Contemporary Californian

The copper bar catches the afternoon light in a way that makes you want to order a Bloody Mary before you've even sat down. Zuni is a bi-level California bistro that's been a fixture on Market Street forever, shaped like a triangle and decorated like someone with actual taste. The wood-fired chicken for two, served with a warm bread salad, is the dish regulars have been quietly hoarding for decades.

  17. Rank 17. Quite Frankly

    Diner American

Quite Frankly is a lunch-only sandwich shop in Antwerp with a diner-meets-deli look, down to jars of pickled onions the size of small appliances. Trays of meat wait behind the counter for their turn in springy bread, and the pastrami is smoked in-house. Nobody asks how your day is going, which saves time, and the sandwiches come out quickly and are heavy enough that dinner becomes optional.

  18. A Malaysian Indian tasting menu restaurant tucked into the Tenderloin, Azalina's trades the neighborhood's gray palette for the saturated colors and layered textures of a Penang night market. The chef grew up there, and the seasonal prix fixe traces Malaysian cooking's Chinese, Indian, Malay, and European overlaps through a California lens. A James Beard semifinalist and listed in the New York Times and Condé Nast Traveler, it earns the attention without announcing itself.

  19. Rank 18. Beit Rima

    Levantine

Pink roses painted floor to ceiling and a Turkish coffee set mounted overhead set the tone before the food arrives. Beit Rima is a casual Middle Eastern small-plates spot where the Lebanese, Palestinian, and Jordanian menu is designed for sharing a little of everything: baked halloumi spiked with jalapeño, flatbread scented with nigella, crispy spiced potatoes. The New York Times named it one of San Francisco's 25 best restaurants right now, and the room makes a convincing case on its own.

  20. Lou's is a cheap, cozy Las Vegas diner done in full small-town cosplay, right down to the porcelain chickens and sheet metal signs reminding you that coffee helps. Your table gets a free sampler of housemade jams on butter crackers before you've ordered anything. The Belgian waffle shows up under hot strawberry sauce and a mountain of whipped cream. Weekday breakfast is calm, while weekends belong to the regulars.

  21. Rank 20. The Admiral

    Creative American Diner

A vintage diner shell hiding a modern New American kitchen, The Admiral in West Asheville runs rotating blue plate specials alongside small plates that take unexpected turns. The menu has enough classic steak-and-sauce comfort to keep one person happy while the person across the table orders something they'll be talking about on the drive home. The Michelin Guide has it on their radar.

  22. A custom oak door sets a quietly clandestine mood before the room opens into a flora-and-fauna mural that covers most of one wall. This is an upscale Mexican restaurant in Presidio Heights where the chef draws from her home state of Guerrero, running smoke, citrus, and heat through a Northern California filter. Sourdough tortillas, heirloom corn from Mexico, and cherry mole show up together on the same plate without any of it feeling forced.

  23. Rank 23. Aloette

    Diner

Patrick Kriss runs the tasting-menu temple ALO one floor up, and Aloette is what he does when he loosens his collar. The room is barely wider than a train car, the menu reads like a diner, and the cheddar brioche arrives complimentary before you've even decided anything. Everyone orders the burger; everyone ends with the lemon meringue pie, which is tall enough to cause a scene. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  24. The views of Mission Bay and the Giants' ballpark hit you before the menu does, which is saying something at this fine dining Italian in Mission Rock. The room leans into sun-faded Tuscan coastal tones, warm wood, and low light that flatters everyone. Pasta is the kitchen's clearest argument: hand-rolled pici in slow-cooked garlic and tomato, Dungeness crab orzo cooked risotto-style. Esquire named the martini one of the country's finest, which gives you somewhere to start.

  25. Rank 25. Delfina

    Italian

The spaghetti pomodoro at this Mission trattoria has its own cult following, which tells you something about how long Delfina has been doing this right. All pasta is made in-house, the wine list leans Italian with a few California strays, and a post-pandemic remodel left behind a handsome wood bar and gold accents. Casual enough for a Tuesday, but the room has enough polish that you won't feel underdressed for a date either.

  26. Rank 26. 7th & Carson

    Irish Diner

This is a downtown all-day diner that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the menu has a sense of humor about itself. A full Irish breakfast shares space with Korean-style chicken and waffles, as if the kitchen refused to pick a side. Exposed brick and diner furniture keep things unfussy, and two patios handle the overflow. Prices stay casual, so jeans are fine and nobody will check your shoes.

  27. Rank 26. JouJou

    French

A glowing Calacatta Viola raw bar piled with oysters anchors the room at this seafood-forward French restaurant in the Design District. David Barzelay of Lazy Bear calls it "big tent French," meaning classic technique with detours through New Orleans and the French West Indies. The room moves through moody lit spaces, plush banquettes, and people-watching booths, and the vibe lands closer to "one more round" than white tablecloth.

  28. Rank 26. Pearl 6101

    Cal- Italian

A former drugstore in the Outer Richmond that went full Cal-Italian neighborhood restaurant, with the soaring ceilings and oversized windows to prove it. By day it's airy and bright; by night the candles take over and whole albums play instead of playlists, which is either charming or a statement. The kitchen does rustic pasta and seasonal proteins, and the Italian-leaning wine list is genuinely well-chosen.

  29. A chrome-and-neon diner aesthetic gets quietly serious treatment at Clyde's, where the kitchen leans on local ingredients and the menu runs from double smash burgers to seared salmon without apologizing for either. The chef earned a James Beard semifinalist nod for Best Chef: Midwest in 2024, which feels about right for a place still bothering to finish you off with soft serve. A fine diner, in every sense the name implies.

  30. Rank 30. Beit Rima

    Middle Eastern

Floral murals cover the dining room walls and custom Arab pop art fills the gaps, all by design: the name translates to "Rima's Home," a tribute to the chef's mother, and the room is meant to feel like one. This is a shareable mezze spot in Duboce Triangle, cheap and cheerful, where the table fills up fast with dips, baked halloumi, and chicken shish tawook while the room gets louder around you.

  31. Rank 31. Caché

    Seafood French

Warm tones, natural wood, and golden lighting make this Inner Sunset bistro feel like someone's very stylish living room, if that living room happened to serve buckwheat crepes and surf-and-turf crudo. The menu runs French but without the rulebook, leaning seasonal and local in a way that keeps things genuinely interesting visit to visit. Sharing plates reward a table of friends, and brunch draws the neighborhood in reliably.

  32. Rank 33. Launderette

    Contemporary Diner

A former laundromat on Holly Street, now a bright, buzzy neighborhood restaurant where the patio fills up fast on good weather days. The menu leans creative New American, the cocktail list runs to mezcal negronis and other inventive drinks, and happy hour makes the whole thing an easy excuse to show up on a Tuesday. The Michelin Guide has it on their radar, which tracks.

  33. Rank 34. Harlow's Cafe

    Diner American

Wood-paneled walls and a parking lot that fills before most people have checked their phones: Harlow's is an old-school Tempe diner that hasn't felt the need to update anything. Booths pack in early birds and retirees at dawn, then hand off to the hangover crowd around nine. The coffee is black, the burritos are large, and the servers are the kind who remember how you take it. Phoenix New Times named it one of the ten best brunch spots in Phoenix.

  34. Tastykake wrappers, scrapple company pennants, and Philly sports ephemera cover every wall at this Fishtown diner, where the decorating philosophy appears to be "yes, and." Omelets come loaded with local kielbasa sourced from an old-school Port Richmond butcher, hash browns arrive properly shattered on the outside, and the scrapple takes a left turn with spicy whitefish and pickled peppers. Daytime only, cheerful, and very much a neighborhood fixture.

  36. Rank 36. Biscuits N' Porn

    Southern Diner

A gas station with a grill inside and a rack of nudie magazines by the register, which explains both the name and the bumper stickers you've been seeing since you crossed the bridge. The move is a breakfast sandwich on a freshly baked biscuit the size of a softball; get there early, because the line forms fast and the biscuits run out. Fried chicken fills the gap when they do.

  38. Rank 36. Gringa All Day

    Modern American Diner

A modern American diner in Eixample run by a Mexican American Angeleno and her partners, Gringa All Day keeps things simple: fluffy pancakes, crispy bacon, a hearty breakfast burrito, and bottomless filter coffee from Three Marks. In a city where brunch spots often lean on the aesthetic and quietly hope you don't notice the food, this one takes the opposite approach. No reservations, so expect a line on weekends.

  40. The roast beef Manhattan, a pile of roasted chuck and mashed potatoes drowned in gravy, tells you everything you need to know about this soul food diner on North College. Barack Obama ate here before he was Barack Obama, and the regulars have never let the place forget it. A fire in 2020 took the famously uneven floors but not the rib tips or the neck bones, and the rebuilt room now seats 500 and has a full bar.

    American Diner

A red neon sign flicks on outside when the burgers start flipping, which tells you most of what you need to know about this greasy spoon parked in the literal shadow of Bryant-Denny Stadium. The walls are buried in Alabama memorabilia, including an actual stadium seat and a confiscated orange construction flag, because no orange survives near this building. The menu runs on the same devotion: burgers and breakfasts named after championship counts.

  43. Parked next to Liberty Park, this neighborhood breakfast and lunch diner draws an eclectic mix: hungover 20-somethings, hip parents, and apparently some professional soccer players. The counter fills fast on weekends, service moves with purpose, and the whiteboard specials are worth a look before you order. Biscuits and gravy and the French Toast Foolishness are the regulars' anchors, but the daily huevos rancheros with pork chile verde have their own following.

  47. Rank 49. Mamahuhu

    Chinese

Open rafters, pale pink tiles, and bright teal accents set the tone at this casual Chinese spot on Clement Street, where Brandon Jew runs a room that looks like it was designed on purpose, because it was. The sweet-and-sour chicken, rice-battered and stuffed into a homemade pineapple bun, is the kind of thing people come back for. Housemade sodas round out a menu that treats the nonalcoholic drinks as a feature rather than an afterthought.

  48. A former liquor store turned all-day breakfast diner in the Broad Avenue Arts District, where the name turns out to be the only misleading thing about it. The menu runs pancakes and biscuits alongside Cuban sandwiches and tacos, so you can eat your way through several meals at once without anyone judging you. There's patio seating out front, cocktails on the menu, and banana pudding if the day calls for it.

  49. Rank 49. True Flavors Diner

    Modern Southern Diner

  50. The buttermilk pancakes here have a firm, golden exterior with a pillowy interior, and the kitchen sends them out with salted clarified butter that makes the whole thing feel like a considered decision. Du-par's is a classic American diner, been around forever, tucked inside the Original Farmers Market on Fairfax. It serves breakfast into evening, which is the kind of flexibility a pancake this good earns.

  51. Rank 54. John O'Groats

    American Diner

Blue gingham tablecloths and a line out the door on weekends tell you everything before you sit down. John O'Groats is a daytime diner on West Pico that has been around forever, and its pancakes are the reason people keep coming back, big enough that the kids' plate could embarrass most adults. Gluten-free versions are available on request, which for a place this old-school is a thoughtful touch.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
