  1. A converted farmstead in the Flemish countryside, this two-Michelin-star restaurant carries the weight of being a culinary landmark with impressive ease. Floris Van Der Veken took over from his celebrated mentor and kept the elegant codes intact, from the composed welcome to the dessert trolley that regulars plan around. The kitchen treats a leek and a turbot with equal seriousness, which tells you most of what you need to know.

  2. Rank 1. Nuance

    Belgian

Marble details and a serious wine cellar set the scene at this two-Michelin-star fine dining room in a quiet Belgian town that gives away nothing from the outside. Thierry Theys cooks with the kind of technical precision that makes each dish feel both considered and alive, pairing unexpected flavors in ways that hold together. Wines by the glass and an absurdly good petit-four spread at the end make it hard to argue with dessert.

  3. Rank 3. Bruut

    Belgian

From the outside it looks like a romantic Bruges townhouse draped in wisteria; inside it's graffiti walls and a chef who clearly has something to prove. Bruut is a tasting-menu-only spot where Bruno Timperman pulls almost everything from within a short drive of the restaurant and turns it into dishes that sound like they shouldn't work but do. The crowd skews adventurous and the wine list leans natural.

  5. Rank 3. René

    Classic Belgian Bistro

  6. Rank 6. Au Vieux Saint Martin

    Belgian Brasserie

Colorful artwork lines the walls of this old-school Brussels brasserie on the Grand Sablon, and the terrace pulls in everyone from antique dealers to tourists who've just figured out where they are. The menu reads like a Belgian civics lesson: filet américain, vol-au-vent, brains with gribiche. The larder is famously well-stocked, and the kitchen doesn't pretend otherwise.

  8. Rank 6. Bar Bulot Zedelgem

    Belgian Bistro

The farmstead that housed the legendary Hertog Jan has been reborn as a polished brasserie, with a lush garden terrace and an interior that leans hard into the elegant side of casual. The kitchen's thing is Franco-Belgian classics stripped to their essence, sole meunière, hanger steak, the kind of food that sounds simple until it lands in front of you and you understand it wasn't.

  10. Rank 6. De Kokkel

    Classic Belgian

A red-tiled floor and low raftered ceiling set the scene in this old fisherman's cottage turned Belgian restaurant on the coast at Koksijde. The kitchen leans into the seasons and the sea, shelling its own shrimps and sourcing with the kind of care that makes the sourcing invisible. Sole poached in shrimp with a Riesling butter is the sort of dish that answers questions you didn't know you had. Service runs smoothly enough that you never notice it working.

  12. Rank 6. Eaust

    Belgian

Crispy shrimp fritters and sole with beurre noisette tell you exactly where you are: the North Sea coast, eating well. This warm, casual restaurant on Ostend's east bank keeps things rooted in Belgian and French classics, leaning hard into local seafood without losing the meat eaters. The room runs to soft natural tones, the vibe is young and neighbourhood-y, and the lunch menu moves fast for good reason.

  13. A stylish villa outside Brussels where a chef took over the family restaurant and quietly made it his own. The cooking is farm-to-table contemporary, rooted in Belgian produce and legible flavors, with the occasional Asian detour that earns its place rather than apologizing for it. The room runs warm and unstuffy, the kind of place where the food feels considered without anyone reminding you of that fact.

  15. Rank 6. Hostellerie De Biek

    Brabançon Belgian

Timber rafters, bare brick, and windows big enough to make the Flemish village feel like part of the dining room, which is exactly the point. This family-run country restaurant occupies a former brewery in a quietly beautiful village outside Aalst, and the menu leans into Belgian classics before giving them a playful nudge, mussels in nduja and red curry among them. Guestrooms are available if the drive home feels like an overrated idea.

  16. Rank 6. Lily’s

    Contemporary Belgian

A green pergola shades the terrace in summer, and by the weekend the dancing starts, which tells you most of what you need to know about Lily's. It's a contemporary restaurant that leans hard into the St. Tropez playbook, all premium finishes and cocktails that arrive looking architectural. The menu moves between Belgian classics and ceviche without breaking a sweat, and the room fills with people who dress like they knew they'd be photographed.

  17. Rank 6. VEST

    Creative Belgian

Sit near the window on a clear evening and you might catch the Last Post drifting over from the Menin Gate at eight. VEST is a modern, elegant restaurant built around the farm-fresh produce of the surrounding Westhoek region, where the chef cooks it all with a light, playful hand. The front-of-house co-owner is the one to ask about wine pairings, and she'll steer you somewhere you wouldn't have found on your own.

  18. A Belgian bistro that takes the waffle seriously enough to turn it into a vehicle for a Hot Brown, which is either inspired or unsettling depending on your feelings about Kentucky. Waffles and galettes anchor the menu alongside steak frites and mussels, with an open kitchen and hardwood floors giving the room a casual, neighborhood feel. The s'mores waffle exists, and that seems like information worth having.

  19. The ales are named after tax terms, which is either the best brewing pun or the most on-brand origin story you'll ever hear. This gastropub a few blocks from Lucas Oil Stadium pours Belgian-style beers alongside a menu built on Indiana-grown meat and produce. The kitchen leans hearty, think brisket croquettes and beer-battered pork tenderloin with Belgian fries. The cocktail list takes itself only slightly more seriously than the beer names do.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
