  1. Rank 1. Sorn

    Southern Thai

Getting a reservation here is reportedly harder than anywhere else in Thailand, which tells you something before you've even sat down. Sorn is a fine dining restaurant built around Southern Thai cooking, driven by chef Supaksorn Jongsiri's memories of his grandmother's kitchen. The spice is unapologetic, the pacing is precise, and the kitchen sends dishes timed to the degree. It holds three Michelin stars and a spot on the World's 50 Best.

  2. Rank 2. Kalaya

    Southern Thai

A skylit Fishtown warehouse with pistachio-green bar, rattan furniture, and colossal potted palms sets the scene for chef Nok Suntaranon's Southern Thai restaurant, a James Beard Outstanding Restaurant winner. The food makes a case that Thai cuisine belongs nowhere near a takeaway box: bird-shaped dumplings hide caramelized cod, and the tamarind-glazed pork chop has genuine chophouse swagger. Reservations are hard to get even after the place quintupled in size.

  3. Rank 3. Chalong

    Traditional Southern Thai

Rattan light fixtures and dark wood set the mood at this Hell's Kitchen shared-plates spot, where the kitchen focuses on Southern Thai cooking. The menu runs through curries, noodle dishes, and seafood plates that lean traditional rather than trend-chasing. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the chef earned a James Beard semifinalist nod. Pre-theater crowds from nearby find it fits the timeline without feeling rushed.

  6. Rank 4. Jaan

    Southern Thai

Southern Thai cooking from a family rooted in Trang province, served on vintage plates inherited from the owner's grandmother, in a converted two-storey house wrapped in greenery. The freshly squeezed coconut milk runs through both the savory dishes and the desserts, and the shrimp chilli dip makes a case for starting there. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place this personal and this specific about where it comes from.

  9. Rank 4. Kolae

    Southern Thai

The name comes from a Southern Thai technique: ingredients soaked in a coconut curry marinade, then cooked over open flames. That method organizes the whole menu at this grill restaurant tucked into Borough Market. The team behind Som Saa spent time in the kitchens of Bo.Lan in Bangkok and Pok Pok in New York before arriving here, and the Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand. Smoke, spice, and a good reason to linger near the market.

  19. Rank 4. Plaza Khao Gaeng

    Southern Thai

A Southern Thai stall inside the Arcade Food Hall on New Oxford Street, where the chef grows his own Southeast Asian ingredients in a tropical greenhouse in Dorset, which is not a sentence you write every day. The curries are punchy and unapologetically Southern Thai, the kind that carry heat as a point of principle. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the whole thing has a loose, canteen energy that makes the food taste better.

    Southern Thai

This is a Thai street food counter in the Arts District, run out of a kitchen roughly the size of a walk-in closet, which explains why most people take it to go. The pad see ew runs about fifteen dollars and arrives with thick, chewy noodles, broccoli, and shredded chicken. The neighbors have bigger dining rooms and louder reputations, and this place seems fine with that. Order the Thai iced tea, then decide how disciplined you feel about the mango sticky rice.

    Southern Thai

The yellow facade on Smith Street belongs to a Southern Thai restaurant that already has people lining up, much as its predecessor in the same space once did. Inside, orange walls and a blue-and-green bar signal that subtlety was never the plan. The kitchen leans into spice and bold regional flavors, with curries, stir-fries, and a fried branzino in fish sauce that tends to stop conversation at the table.

  33. A terrace, two floors, and a Chinatown corner that always seems to have a lineup outside it. This is a Southern Thai restaurant where the kitchen leans into the heat and funk of regional cooking, the kind that doesn't soften things for the room. The staff are young and quick, which matters because tables turn fast enough that the line moves. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and the coconut green curry alone explains why.

The chef grew up in Phuket, and the menu reads accordingly: southern Thai cooking, the kind that leans harder on heat and fermented shrimp paste than the tourist-trail dishes most London Thai spots default to. It's a cheerful, colourful room on Caledonian Road that somehow skips the usual temple-screen décor, the staff are genuinely warm, and the house-infused gins keep the atmosphere tilted pleasantly toward festive.

  49. Rank 49. Krua Khun Ein

    Southern Thai

Southern Thai cooking sits on the spicier, funkier end of an already bold national cuisine, and this casual spot on the northeastern edge of the city leans into that without apology. Gaeng tai pla, the fermented fish organ curry that separates the curious from the committed, anchors a menu of regional specialties that the kitchen keeps fiercely flavored. A long trip from the center of Bangkok, but the food tastes like it couldn't have been made anywhere closer.

  50. Hat Yai-style fried chicken is the reason to know this casual Berkeley Thai spot, where a rice flour batter does double duty as marinade and delivers a thin, shattering crust topped with fried shallots. You order from a touch screen, the staff will walk you through the menu, and the sweet chile sauce that comes alongside is fine, but the prik nam pla is the move.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
