  1. Cafe Malabar is a casual Keralan restaurant where the dosa arrive brittle and chewy at once, a physics problem nobody at the table will bother to solve. The chili butter and the crimson potato masala are both coming, so don't spend long deliberating. There's cumin-heavy fried chicken on the Kerala side of the menu, plus a big dining room and a waterfront patio for lingering. Air Canada put it on its Best New Restaurants list.

  2. Rank 2. Copra

    South Indian

The name refers to dried coconut meat, which tells you roughly where the kitchen's head is at. Srijith Gopinathan's South Indian restaurant fills a lush, two-story corner room in the Fillmore that photographs well and eats even better. The sharing menu runs from a palette of housemade chutneys with pappadom to shell-on crab curry, the kind of sticky, tamarind-dark sauce that renders your outfit a casualty. A James Beard semifinalist and ranked fourth on the Chronicle's Bay Area top 100.

  3. Rows of labeled spice jars line the walls, which tells you something about how seriously this contemporary Indian restaurant takes its pantry. The chef sources ingredients from his own farm and runs a tight menu that swings between fiery naan and delicate tuna bhel without losing focus. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and landed on the New York Times' Miami list. The suburban strip-mall setting is the only thing that doesn't match the ambition.

  4. Rank 4. Quilon

    Malabar South Indian

Sandstone walls and rattan screens set the tone at this Michelin-starred Indian restaurant inside the Taj 51 Hotel, where the kitchen focuses on the southwest coast rather than the usual suspects. The menu travels the Malabar Coast with fish curries, kori gassi, and pepper shrimps, and a separate vegetarian menu means no one draws the short straw. The team is sharp and the room is calm enough to make Westminster feel very far away.

  5. Rank 5. Mesa Provisions

    Southern South Indian

Mesa is a casual Indian restaurant where the chef still walks over to greet every table, which is rarer than the marigolds. The menu pairs South Indian cooking with Southern comfort, so shrimp and basmati grits share a page with something called naanchos. There's no liquor license, so the drinks lean on port, sake, and vermouth, and the saffron-and-jaggery Manhattan has no interest in apologizing for it. James Beard Best Chef: Southwest nominee, 2024.

  6. Rank 5. Saffron Valley

    South Indian

The Indian street food mini-chain that started as a spice-blend stand at the farmers market now runs several Salt Lake locations, each anchored by what the restaurant bills as the city's largest Indian buffet. The menu leans into the southern and western regional traditions the founder grew up with, and a James Beard semifinalist nod for Outstanding Restaurateur in 2025 suggests the city has noticed. Come hungry and ready to commit to multiple plates.

  7. A few tables and counter seats in the Theater District, which means you're eating Hyderabadi food elbow-to-elbow with strangers who are also very happy about it. The New York Times called out the gongura chicken biryani, and the Michelin Guide took note too. The menu pulls from Hyderabad with nods to the wider subcontinent, and the kitchen moves fast without feeling rushed.

  8. Rank 7. Lungi

    South Indian-Sri Lankan

Kothu roti, the Sri Lankan street staple of shredded roti, meat, and egg, landed on the New York Times list of top dishes in the city, which tells you something about what the kitchen is doing here. This Upper East Side restaurant draws on the chef's upbringing in Kanyakumari, where southern India and Sri Lanka blur together, and the cooking tastes like it. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the Times ranked it among the city's top 100 restaurants.

  9. Rank 9. Paper Dosa

    South Indian

The paper dosa itself, thin and audibly crispy, served with masala on the side, is the whole argument for this south Indian restaurant in Santa Fe. The menu leans into dosas, those fermented rice-and-lentil crepes, with enough filling variations that a table of four will eat better than a table of two. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a room where the food is the point and the prices don't require a long exhale.

  10. Rank 9. The Tamil Crown

    South Indian Gastropub

A converted Victorian pub in Islington running South Indian food alongside proper pints, which turns out to be a combination nobody should have waited this long for. Two floors, low lighting, a playlist that earns its reputation, and a menu that moves between small plates, curries, and cocktails without any fuss. Sunday brings an Indian-spiced roast that makes the usual pub lunch feel like it was missing something all along.

  12. Rank 12. Madurai Mes

    South Indian

Southern Indian cooking in a strip mall near the Medical Center, where the booths are scuffed and the lighting belongs in a horror meme but the thalis arrive on banana leaves piled around a mound of white rice. This is the kind of casual, inexpensive spot that fills a real gap, since Northern Indian food tends to dominate the city. The biryanis and Madras curries hold up well for delivery, though the lunch thali is the reason regulars keep coming back.

  14. Rank 13. Guru Lukshmi

    South Indian

A South Indian restaurant that takes up several bays of a Mississauga strip mall, which turns out to be a good call given the crowds it draws. The dosa menu alone runs to dizzying variety, from the giant Mysore Bhaji Dosa stuffed with aloo masala to more kinds than most of the region has ever attempted. Idlys, vadas, and uttapam come out fresh and fast, with sambar and chutneys alongside. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  15. Rank 13. Hoppers

    South Indian

The namesake hoppers, those bowl-shaped rice flour crepes, are the reason to come to this Sri Lankan and South Indian restaurant in Doha's smartly redeveloped downtown. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the menu is built for sharing: snacks, biryanis, dosas, and curries that are easier to navigate than to stop ordering from. The kind of place where the bill arrives and everyone assumes someone else ran it up.

  17. Rank 13. Kricket

    South Indian

The long counter wrapping the open kitchen is where you want to sit at this Southern Indian restaurant in Soho, the original outpost of what's now a small London group. The menu leans toward Kerala, Goa, and Karnataka, which makes a change from the usual North Indian playbook, and the Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand to prove the point. Downstairs has a darker, late-night feel if the counter's full.

  18. Rank 13. Santosham

    Keralan

Kerala cooking gets its own spotlight at this Indian restaurant in Chiyoda, where coconut sweetness, sharp curry leaves, and black pepper show up as recurring characters rather than background notes. A chef from the region keeps things specific, and because Kerala hugs the coast, seafood carries a lot of the menu. The Michelin Guide has handed it a Bib Gourmand. The name means "happiness" in Malayalam, which is either charming or a lot of pressure on the kitchen.

  19. The Sunday wait stretches to three hours, which tells you most of what you need to know about this South Indian restaurant tucked into a former Tex-Mex spot on Highway 635. The menu leans into Andhra Pradesh home cooking: dosas in several forms, idli, bisi bele bath, filter coffee, all landing on tables full of Telugu conversation. The New York Times put it on their Restaurant List in 2024, and the regulars looked unsurprised.

  20. Rank 20. Thattu

    Keralan

Stainless-steel plates land on the table the way they would at someone's home in Kerala, which is exactly the point. Thattu is a Keralan restaurant in Chicago where fish fries, coconut curries, and yogurt rice anchor the menu, and the appam, lacy rice-and-coconut domes, exist mostly to drag through whatever's left. The Tater Tots dusted in chaat masala read less like a gimmick and more like a clever raid on the pantry.

  21. Rank 21. Avartana

    Modern South Indian

    The awards

  22. The name breaks down into three Keralan staples: tapioca, jackfruit, and bird's eye chilli, and the menu at this coastal Keralan restaurant takes that trinity as its mandate. Set menus run from snacks through curries and stews to dessert, while the à la carte adds sharing plates like whole boneless pomfret stuffed with coconut and masala. A Discovery by The 50, it's one of the more focused explorations of Keralan cooking you'll find in Chennai.

  23. Rank 21. Karavalli

    Mangalorean

    The awards

  24. Recipes passed down through three generations anchor the menu at this warm, well-dressed southern Indian restaurant in Cheltenham. The cooking leans into Kerala, with dishes built on bright, layered spicing rather than heat for its own sake. If commitment is proving difficult, the banquet menus take the decision out of your hands entirely, which is either a relief or an excuse, depending on your evening.

    The awards

  25. Rank 24. Nadodi

    South Indian

Polished marble floors and black-and-white photographs set the tone for this fine-dining room on the seventh floor of the Four Seasons. The concept traces the migratory path of Kerala's nomadic tribes across an ancient land bridge to Sri Lanka, which is a more compelling founding idea than most restaurants manage. The chef, formerly of Bangkok's Gaggan, serves colourful set menus built around overlooked southern Indian ingredients and techniques.

  26. Rank 24. Podi & Poriyal

    South Indian

    The awards

  27. Rank 24. Rare

    Tamil

The kitchen is on full display behind large windows, and the chef, who trained in Chennai, cooks through a Tamil Nadu lens: chilli heat, coconut richness, tamarind's sweet-sour pull, all sourced through West Cork. It's a rustic-chic dining room in Kinsale where the chefs deliver the dishes themselves, which sounds like a small thing until it happens. A Michelin Selected restaurant with a strong sense of place, two places at once.

  29. Rank 29. Andhra Bhavan

    South Indian

Canteen-style southern Indian cooking in Dublin 1, where the gunpowder dosa arrives crisp, golden, and carrying enough spice to make a point. Thalis give you the full spread: dal, lamb curry, fried cabbage, paneer, all served together the way a good thali should be. The room is no-frills and the prices match, which means the lunch crowd moves fast. Mirchi bajji, fried green chiles dusted with peanuts, makes a fine opening argument.

  30. The kitchen here sends out more than 3,000 thali plates a day, which tells you everything about the pace of lunch. This canteen-style spot near India Gate is the go-to for home-style cooking from Andhra Pradesh, a state with a serious reputation for heat. The thali arrives loaded, and servers keep the vegetables coming until you wave them off. The tamarind rasam alone is reason enough to make the trip from wherever you're staying.

  31. Rank 29. Carnatic Cafe

    South Indian

South Indian coffee brewed in a steel pot and poured with a practiced arm sets the tone at this cozy South Indian cafe in GK2's M Block Market. The kitchen zeroes in on dosas done the Bangalore way, the kind that sends homesick diners from the south into quiet rapture. The puddu, deep-fried rice flour balls glossed with ghee, make an excellent argument for arriving hungry. Coriander-spiced buttermilk is the move if coffee isn't.

  32. Rank 29. India House

    South Indian

The tandoor oven is the move at this Indian restaurant on Cerrillos, where the chicken wings come out broiled over mesquite and finished with yogurt, garlic, and ginger. The dining room runs large and the service is unhurried and polished. If you like heat, say so; the kitchen will happily adjust. A weekday lunch buffet draws a steady crowd. The chef came up through Los Angeles, New York, and the Caribbean before landing in Santa Fe, and the cooking shows the mileage.

  34. Rank 29. Thattukada

    South Indian

East Ham holds London's largest Kerala community, and this casual South Indian spot sits at the heart of it. The fries are the thing everyone talks about: a half chicken fried hard with chiles and crispy onions, whole anchovies, battered mussels. Curries and roasts run deeper than their plain descriptions suggest, and the parottas and appams are there to make sure nothing gets left behind.

  35. Rank 29. Udipi Cafe

    Vegetarian South Indian

South Indian vegetarian cooking is thin on the ground in Pittsburgh, which makes this casual strip-mall cafe in Monroeville worth the drive from downtown. The dosa menu runs to over twenty varieties, and the curries pair with bread that arrives at the table looking genuinely inflated. Red leather booths, big plates, and a crowd that tends to arrive in groups and order as many things as the table can hold.

    South Indian

South Indian cooking is the reason to come to this Westheimer restaurant, even though the menu covers North Indian ground too. Fermented rice batter crepes, peppery tamarind curries, and spiced seafood or goat dishes built on black pepper and sour notes give the kitchen its personality. Finish with an Indian coffee or the sarsaparilla-and-bael-fruit cocktail, which sounds obscure until you try it.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
