  1. Rank 1. Balkan Treat Box

    Eastern European

The glowing copper-clad wood-fired oven at the center of the open kitchen tells you everything about priorities here. This lo-fi Balkan canteen in Webster Groves started as a food truck and kept the chaotic energy, with lines outside and regulars still debating what to order. Smoky kebabs, brown butter hummus, spectacular flatbreads. Chef Loryn Nalic holds a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Midwest.

  2. Rank 2. Bottiglieria 1881

    Polish Eastern European

The menu descriptions are famously terse, which tells you nothing about what's coming. This is a two Michelin-starred fine dining room in Kraków's old town, where the chef takes traditional Polish cooking and refines it into something quietly startling. Think guinea fowl broth, venison, pierogi reimagined with saffron. The room is smartly turned out, the service attentive without being stiff, and the atmosphere lands closer to relaxed dinner party than hushed temple.

  3. Rank 2. Platán Gourmet

    Eastern European

Dinner here opens at the Chef's Table with an aperitif and snacks before the team leads you down into a barrel-vaulted cellar under Platán Manor, where an open kitchen runs two multi-course tasting menus rooted in Hungarian creative cooking. The dishes are precise without being stiff, and the setting, stone walls and candlelight beneath a castle, does rather a lot of the heavy lifting. It holds two Michelin stars.

  4. Rank 2. Stand

    Hungarian Eastern European

A glass-walled kitchen sits dead center in this modern Hungarian restaurant, so the cooking is the decor whether you like it or not. The two chef-owners hold two Michelin stars and channel them into classic Hungarian dishes rebuilt with serious technique, gulyás and venison and the somlói dessert that never leaves the menu. The wine list leans Hungarian, and the Tokajis are a good argument for keeping it that way.

  5. Rank 5. BABA

    Polish Eastern European

Tightly packed tables and a sommelier who actually knows Polish wine set the mood at this Michelin-starred modern bistro in Wrocław's old town. Chef Beata Śniechowska reworks classic Polish dishes into something sharper and more considered, pierogi included. The room buzzes in the way only small, confident places do, and the service reads more like hospitality than performance.

    The awards

  6. Rank 5. Lilli Fine Dining

    Regional Eastern European

A glass partition between the dining room and the garden folds away in summer, so the whole space becomes something close to a terrace. This is a Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant in a small Austrian market town, built around a four-to-six course set menu that leans hard on regional producers. Sturgeon with Alpine caviar or Amur carp with a paprika stew nod to the Hungarian border nearby. The wine list matches the food's regional conviction.

    The awards

  7. Rank 5. Moon

    Slavic Eastern European

A former blacksmith's shop in a converted industrial complex, Moon takes its name from the Estonian word for poppy and its cooking from Slavic tradition, with a seasonally changing menu built around the kind of simple, local, honest food that sounds like a manifesto until you taste it. Siberian dumplings and carp in sour cream show up regularly, and the team treats first-timers like they've been coming in for years.

  8. Rank 5. Nineteen18

    Eastern European

Herbs for the closing tea come from the chef's mother's garden, which tells you most of what you need to know about Nineteen18. This Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant in Vilnius runs a ten-course dinner that leans into Lithuanian produce with enough technique to keep it surprising. Ask for the counter seats and you'll spend the evening watching the open kitchen in full flow.

  9. Rank 5. Salt

    Hungarian Eastern European

Shelves lined with jars of preserved foraged fruits and vegetables set the mood before you've touched a menu, which, at this intimate Michelin-starred hotel restaurant, there isn't one anyway. A surprise tasting menu works through intricate riffs on classic Hungarian cooking, assembled in front of you at a wood-clad pass. The butter, lardo, and Mangalitsa ham are all made in-house, which feels like showing off, but the kind you forgive.

  10. Rank 5. Solo Du

    Modern Eastern European

Pale wood, clean lines, and windows that face the Berchtesgaden mountains without apology set the tone in this fine dining room inside the Kulturhof. A Michelin-starred chef with Hungarian roots runs a tight kitchen that sends out six- or eight-course menus, one of them vegetarian, in the kind of composed, ingredient-led style that pairs well with the optional wine flight. The service is warm without fuss, and the alpine light does most of the interior decorating.

    The awards

  11. Rank 5. Štangl

    Seasonal Eastern European

A film projected on the wall introduces the farmers before you've touched your fork, which tells you where this modern Czech restaurant's head is at. Upstairs in a light-filled loft space, the kitchen is fully open and the seasonal menu runs three or five courses, built on local produce with a quiet precision that never tips into fuss. A Michelin star. The bakery downstairs sells the house bread if you'd like to take some home.

  12. An old Schlitz tavern in Bay View that smells like someone's grandmother has been cooking since morning. This cash-only Serbian dinner spot runs on its own clock, which means a 45-minute wait is fairly standard and nobody seems to mind. Goulash, moussaka, chicken paprikash, and flaky böreks fill out a menu built for cold weather and real hunger. An old-school institution doing exactly what it has always done.

  14. Rank 13. Molotov Kitschen + Cocktails

    Ukrainian Eastern European

East Colfax doesn't usually do "sexy Eastern European," but Molotov Kitschen makes a convincing case for the phrase. The chef, a James Beard semifinalist, roots the menu in Ukrainian cooking, rotating dumplings and borscht alongside dishes that treat radishes and buckwheat like they have something to prove. Horilka cocktails and Balkan wines round things out. Counter seats are the move if you can get them.

  15. Rank 15. Anelya

    Eastern European

The zakusky cart rolling through the dining room is a good sign: Eastern European grandma cooking, done with real intention. Beverly Kim and Johnny Clark named this Avondale restaurant after one of their grandmothers, and the menu follows, from horseradish vodka at the bar to green borscht thick with dill and egg. Balkan wine, stuffed cabbage, challah-soft pampushky. It's the kind of meal that makes you wonder why this cuisine took so long to get here.

  16. Rank 15. Kachka

    Eastern European

The dining room is built to look like a Soviet dacha, complete with turquoise shutters and diagonal wood paneling modeled on the owner's great-grandparents' cottage. Kachka is a full-service Eastern European restaurant where the menu runs from happy-hour zakuski and herring salads to Siberian pelmeni and rabbit braised in a clay pot. Horseradish-infused vodka from the team's own distillery handles the rest. The New York Times named it among Portland's best.

  17. Rank 15. Soixante

    Polish Eastern European

Tables packed close enough that you'll learn your neighbor's business, and a window that makes the whole thing look like a dare. This is a creative restaurant where the chef's Polish roots steer the menu toward earthy, tangy combinations that tend to surprise. Pearl barley stands in for risotto rice, squid ink involved. The wine cellar is taken seriously, which the room's cosy, nostalgic clutter doesn't necessarily suggest it would be.

  18. Rank 18. Apteka

    Vegan Eastern European

Potato pierogi with czarna salsa is the kind of detail that stops you mid-sentence. Apteka is a vegan sit-down restaurant in Bloomfield riffing on Central and Eastern European cooking, and the menu reads like someone's Polish grandmother went fully plant-based and never looked back. The homemade cordials and tinctures are their own thing, worth ordering slowly. A James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic.

  19. Rank 18. Sudova

    Eastern European

Stained-glass windows were the starting point for the entire bar design, which tells you something about how deliberately this Eastern European restaurant was built. The menu pulls from the chef's grandmother's recipes, pierogi and pelmeni and khachapuri landing hot, and the medovik changes flavors every few months just to keep you coming back. A James Beard nominee, and Cincinnati Magazine's number-five restaurant.

  20. Rank 20. Katz's Delicatessen

    Eastern European

The ticket system is real: you get one at the door, you guard it with your life, and the men at the counter are not interested in your confusion. Katz's is an old-school Lower East Side deli that has been feeding New York pastrami sandwiches longer than most buildings around it have been standing. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which feels about right for a place where nobody is pretending to be anything.

A dim, low-slung corner restaurant in East Kensington where the pierogies are non-negotiable and the rotisserie pork lands on stewed kapusta like it's been doing this forever. The sourdough comes with dill butter and smalec, the seasonal water ice is a very Philly curveball, and the whole place reads like Polish comfort food filtered through a neighborhood that just figured out it had good bones. The potato pierogi has been on The Infatuation's list of dishes that define New York, which tells you something about Veselka's place in the city's food mythology. This East Village Ukrainian diner has been around forever, serving borscht and pierogi to the neighborhood at all hours, 24-hour service now restored. It draws tourists, yes, but also the people who grew up eating here and aren't stopping. A James Beard Outstanding Restaurant semifinalist, and cheap enough that you'll go back.

  23. Rank 23. Bohemian Spirit

    Eastern European

Czech beer hall on the first floor of the landmark National Bohemian Hall building, with wood paneling, simple tables, and the kind of vintage knick-knacks that suggest nobody has redecorated since the Cold War, which is a compliment. Pilsners are the obvious move, though a European-leaning wine list covers the grape contingent. The food runs hearty and honest, dumplings appearing at every stage including dessert. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  24. Rank 23. ODESSA Restaurant

    Ukrainian Eastern European

  25. Rank 23. Pierogi Boys

    Polish Eastern European

Caramelized onions, sour cream, and chives crown the classic potato-and-cheese pierogi here, and that's more or less the whole argument for visiting. What started as a DeKalb Market stall grew into a lively Ridgewood restaurant and market doing contemporary Polish comfort food. Schnitzel with endive and pickle martinis signal ambition, but the pierogi are still running the show. A casual, cheerful room where the crowd orders like they've been waiting all week.

  26. Rank 23. Rose's

    Eastern European

A diner on Detroit's East Side that now runs Polish nights, the menu built around pierogi, kluski, and kielbasa alongside a long-loved burger on thick sourdough. The room feels like Grandma's sunroom, green walls and pink curtains intact, except for the wax-drowned candlesticks and bouquets cut from the parking lot garden. The New York Times named it to their 2026 Restaurant List, which tracks.

  28. Rank 28. Çka Ka Qëllu

    Eastern European

Glass cases of embroidered regional dress line the walls of this Albanian restaurant on Arthur Avenue, next to the old retail market, where the food runs to burek and cabbage rolls stuffed with ground veal. The Bronx's Albanian community has been quietly growing for decades, and this is where it eats. The menu is the comforting, filling kind, and the brumat sampler is a reasonable place to start if you've never eaten Albanian before.

  29. Rank 29. Pierozek

    Eastern European

A small pierogi shop tucked into Greenpoint, the part of Brooklyn that still feels like it never left Warsaw. The menu does exactly what it promises, with stuffed dumplings running savory to sweet, plus borscht, golabki, and kielbasa that could carry a meal on its own. Bolesławiec pottery doubles as the serveware, which is either charming or showing off depending on your mood. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a shot of Polish liquor is basically required.

  30. Rank 30. 21 Grams

    Balkan Eastern European

The name pulls double duty: 21 grams is the supposed weight of the human soul and the latitude of the Balkans, which neatly previews what the kitchen is doing. This casual bistro on the second floor of Meyan Mall keeps things straightforward by Dubai standards, with an all-Balkan team cooking food from home. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place more interested in the food than the spectacle.

  31. Rank 30. Acanti

    Modern Eastern European

Despite the name, this is a modern Polish restaurant with European influences, not a trattoria, and the misdirection is half the fun. It occupies two rooms in a converted tenement: a bright ground-floor dining room and a darker, more atmospheric basement. The kitchen turns out refined, layered plates with a deft touch, and the young team keeps things warm and relaxed. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  32. Rank 30. Bela Reka

    Serbian Eastern European

A Serbian tavern on the city's edge where the ewe's milk cheese comes from the team's own farm in the Homolje Mountains, which sets the tone for how seriously this place takes its sourcing. The menu runs through traditional Serbian cooking, big portions, house-baked bread, and slow lamb that's been dry-aged on the premises. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the drive out to Tošin Bunar is quieter than you'd expect for a room that full.

  33. Rank 30. Bevri

A giant chalkboard covered in Georgian script greets you at this University Avenue restaurant, with a handy illustrated wine chart and a declaration at the bottom that translates to "We love our guests." Khinkali dumplings filled with savory broth and lamb share the menu with khachapuri, the classic cheese and egg bread. It doubles as a low-key primer on a cuisine most tables know nothing about when they sit down.

The Carlsbad dumplings, fluffy and golden, are the thing regulars mention first. Lunch specials draw a crowd early, and the service keeps pace without fuss.

It's a casual restaurant and microbrewery in the Czech countryside, earning a Michelin Bib Gourmand for regional and seasonal cooking made with solid ingredients. A small shop corner sells jams and preserves, which is either charming or a trap, depending on your willpower.

  37. Rank 30. Farmer & Sons

    Polish Eastern European

White tiles and Polish comfort food on the suburban fringe of Poznań, where a Bib Gourmand bistro is quietly doing something smart with the classics. The kitchen lightens traditional recipes without draining the flavor from them, so dishes like dumplings topped with braised beef cheek and a bone-marrow demi-glace land with real weight. A handful of steaks sold by weight cover the celebration end of things, and the service is notably warm for a room this casual.

  38. Rank 30. Gostilna Francl

    Eastern European

Celje Castle looms over the valley while this country inn below quietly does its own thing: regional Slovenian cooking that leans on nearby farms for its meat, with venison holding a near-permanent spot on the menu. The wine list runs mostly local, with a small Italian detour and a vintage section that takes itself seriously. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place this unfussy about impressing anyone.

    The awards

  39. Rank 30. Gostilna Mahorčič

    Slovenian Eastern European

A farmhouse dining room in a tiny Karst village, set up like someone's very well-appointed private lounge and run with the kind of warmth that makes you feel the invitation was personal. The chef draws on Slovenian ingredients with real technical seriousness, letting almost nothing go to waste. The wine list earns the same attention as the food. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand, which tells you the pricing is kinder than the cooking suggests.

    The awards

  40. Rank 30. Gostilna Rajh

    Eastern European

A fifth-generation family restaurant in the Mura region, where the cooking leans hard into local tradition without becoming a folk museum. Dödoli, buckwheat toast, and prekmurska gibanica show up in forms that feel both rooted and considered. The room has the ease of a place that has never needed to try too hard, which is usually a good sign. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  41. Rank 30. IDA kuchnia i wino

    Polish Eastern European

Exposed brick and concrete floors inside Hotel Jazz, just off the Old Town, give this regional bistro the feel of a place that decided pretension was too much effort. The cooking follows the same logic: good ingredients, precise technique, and no theatrical flourishes. Dumplings and slow-cooked chicken anchor a menu that reads like someone's grandmother got serious. The wine list quietly slips in local Polish riesling. Michelin gives it a Bib Gourmand.

    The awards

  42. Rank 30. Iva New Balkan Cuisine

    Serbian Eastern European

A Michelin Bib Gourmand bistro tucked into a contemporary business complex, which sounds like a strange home for Serbian soul food until you're sitting in the peaceful inner courtyard and a smoked, glazed pork leg arrives with something sweetly seasonal alongside it. The wine list leans heavily on local labels, service is easy without being slack, and the kitchen treats old Balkan cooking as a starting point rather than a museum exhibit.

    The awards

  43. Rank 30. Laliko

    Georgian Eastern European

A West Village Georgian restaurant where the wine list runs entirely from the Caucasus and the servers teach you how to eat khinkali before you embarrass yourself. Those large, broth-filled dumplings are the move, though the khachapuri, in either its cheese-molten or mint-bright form, will slow you down first. A long communal table anchors a room hung with murals. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

    The awards

  44. Rank 30. Milda

    Latvian Eastern European

Named for the statue crowning Riga's Freedom Monument, this Old Town restaurant leans into Latvian tradition without apology. Grey peas with bacon, meat dumplings, and Lithuanian cepelinai anchor a menu that reads like a Baltic grandmother's recipe box. The room is low-key and the portions are generous, which goes some way to explaining the regulars. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, and the prices make that feel almost embarrassing.

    The awards

  45. Rank 30. N28 Wine and Kitchen

    Hungarian Eastern European

A wine-forward Hungarian restaurant on a lively Budapest street where the team treats first-timers like regulars and mostly pulls it off. The room reads modern, but the menu leans traditional, drawing from the Hungarian larder with dishes that shift by season. Nearly every bottle on the list is Hungarian, which is either a principled stance or an excellent excuse to explore the country's wines. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the prices show why.

  46. Rank 30. Piernicova

    Polish Eastern European

Żurek soup that regulars apparently plan their afternoons around sits at the heart of a Polish regional restaurant tucked into Toruń's old town, where the medieval ramparts are close enough to admire from the terrace. Inside, charcoal furniture and bare brick give it a contemporary edge, though upstairs, with tables facing the open kitchen, things get properly cozy. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the team steers you through the menu like they mean it.

  47. Rank 30. Platán Bisztró

    Modern Hungarian Eastern European

A 240-year-old plane tree shades the terrace at this lakeside bistro tucked inside a manor complex beside a historic castle in Tata. The menu mixes modern Hungarian cooking with broader European influences, and a patisserie counter near the entrance makes leaving without a profiterole an act of real discipline. Indoors the room is quietly elegant; outside, with the water and the old tree, it borders on unfair. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  131. Rank 62. Sauska Padi

    Contemporary Eastern European

A hillside wine estate restaurant in Tokaj wine country, where the terrace looks straight out over the vines you'll be drinking from. The kitchen runs a short à la carte alongside two tasting menus, one built entirely around the region itself, paired with local Sauska wines. Start with a glass in the bar before moving through to the sleek dining room, and ask someone to show you the winery below if you'd like the full picture.

  132. Rank 62. Sino

    Ukrainian Eastern European

Rye and sourdough arrive in a basket before anything else, which tells you something about the priorities here. This cosy Notting Hill restaurant channels Ukraine through its menu, from black pudding croquettes to beef dumplings bobbing in spicy broth. The chef's story is extraordinary, but the food doesn't lean on it, it just quietly makes the case. Warm, personal, and a little unexpected for All Saints Road.

  136. Rank 62. Stancija Kovačići

    Eastern European

A farmhouse turned country restaurant tucked below the Učka mountains, a short drive from Opatija, where the kitchen builds the menu almost entirely around Istrian ingredients. The star is boškarin, the local cattle breed, and the slow-braised shank is the thing to order. Fish appears on the menu, but this is a meat-and-land kind of place, run by a family that has never felt the need to complicate what the region already does well.

  139. Rank 62. Szaletly

    Hungarian Eastern European

A sprawling neighborhood restaurant in City Park with a garden terrace big enough to actually use, Szaletly covers a lot of ground, literally and figuratively. The menu roams across influences but keeps Hungarian cooking at its core, and the kitchen handles the full-house crowd without visible strain. Come for a drink and a snack, or commit to the tasting menu with matched wines. The esterházy for dessert is non-negotiable.

  140. Rank 62. Talu

    Modern Eastern European

The vaulted cellar of a manor house makes for a more dramatic dining room than most restaurants manage on purpose. Talu is the hotel restaurant of Andrássy Kúria & Spa, serving modern Hungarian cooking built around regional recipes and local produce, Mangalitsa pork among them. The Tokaj wine list leans heavily on the neighbors, with plenty available by the glass, which is a polite way of saying the evening can extend comfortably.

  141. Rank 62. Tatar Bunar

    Ukrainian Eastern European

The room looks like a gallery dedicated to Ukrainian ceramics, which is either a bold move or the most accurate possible preview of the food to come. This Shoreditch restaurant serves generous, share-friendly plates rooted in Ukrainian cooking, with a long open kitchen and a covered terrace out back. The pickled cherry tomatoes with lemon yoghurt have become the dish regulars argue over last rights to. A welcome addition to Curtain Road.

  142. Rank 62. Tati

    Modern Eastern European

A modern restaurant in Budapest's District 7 run by people who also farm their own produce outside the city, which tends to show up in the cooking in ways you notice. The menu moves through meat, fish, and plant-based dishes, all leaning on traditional Hungarian recipes for something that feels grounded rather than showy. The natural and biodynamic wine list sticks close to local vineyards, which fits the whole ethos pretty neatly.

  143. Rank 62. Teyföl

    Hungarian Eastern European

Named for the sour cream that turns up in half the dishes, this modern bistro sits in a period building on a cobbled Old Town street in Szentendre, the contrast between the historic exterior and the bright interior setting the tone for what follows. The kitchen takes classical Hungarian cooking and applies just enough creativity to keep things interesting, working through confit chicken pancakes and gypsy-style roasts without veering into the fussy.

  144. Rank 62. U Štěpána

    Czech Eastern European

A farmhouse restaurant outside Pilsen that raises its own cattle, which means the beef on your plate was living nearby not long ago. The menu leans into that fact with dishes like beef ribs and braised tongue, all done in a straightforward Czech style. The room is properly rustic, the terrace in summer is surrounded by greenery, and there is a campsite if you decide the rural quiet suits you for longer than one meal.

  145. Rank 62. Uoksas

    Modern Eastern European

A beetroot taco filled with seabass ceviche tells you something about what's happening at this modern restaurant in Kaunas: Lithuanian cooking put through a Nordic filter, with Baltic ingredients doing most of the heavy lifting. The room is chic but relaxed, the kind of place where a tasting menu feels like a treat rather than an ordeal. The à la carte is concise enough that you don't need a strategy.

The half-timbered house dates back centuries and is one of very few of its kind still standing in the country, which makes the minimalist interior, all rustic ceiling and brick floor, feel like a deliberate provocation. This Czech regional restaurant keeps the menu short and the sourcing local, with the kitchen doing its own fermenting, pickling, and preserving. Five guestrooms sit in a separate timber building out back for those who don't want to leave.

  148. Rank 62. Vallmo

    Seasonal Eastern European

Tucked into a quiet side street in Prague's New Town, Vallmo is a cozy contemporary Czech restaurant where the dining room runs to pale wood and understated wall art, and the kitchen leans on local producers to reinterpret seasonal Czech cooking. Evenings bring a five or eight course tasting menu, with a sommelier who clearly takes the wine list seriously. Lunch keeps things shorter and less ceremonial.

    Hungarian Eastern European

A working water wheel turns beside the terrace at this traditional Hungarian tavern near Lake Balaton, which tells you pretty much everything about the vibe. Hearty classics, meat-stuffed pancakes among them, come at prices that won't make you wince. The décor leans rustic with a faint Mediterranean tilt, the owners are the warm kind, and the place fills up fast when the season hits.

  152. Rank 62. Villa Kabala

    Hungarian Eastern European

A hilltop villa above Lake Balaton that once belonged to Hungarian painter István Farkas, now a destination restaurant with rooms run by an ambitious couple. The tasting menu leans hard into the hyperlocal: cheese, salami, sausages, beer, and wine all come from the family, and they roast their own coffee too. Book a terrace bedroom and stay for breakfast, which at this point is practically a moral obligation.

  153. Rank 62. Waldinger

    Regional Eastern European

A regional dining room tucked inside an Art Nouveau hotel in Osijek, with contemporary canvases hanging where you'd half-expect hunting trophies. The kitchen works closely with local farmers, so the menu shifts with the seasons and leans into Slavonian flavors, from hearty stuffed pork cuts to desserts that make the table go quiet. The wine list runs through small local producers you won't find anywhere else.

The schnitzel comes with a potato salad whose potatoes are sourced from the chef's brother-in-law, which tells you something about how this bistro operates. It sits inside Budapest's tallest skyscraper with city views from a generous dining room and terrace. The cooking runs classically rustic, chilled fruit soups in summer, confident Central European comfort food year-round. A business lunch crowd fills it at midday, but the food holds up past the price point.

  158. Rank 62. Zelna Bisztró

The menu is short and flexible, running from light bites to proper Hungarian plates like braised beef cheeks, with golden walnut dumplings to finish. Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
