  1. The dining room looks like it was decorated by a child who just discovered neon, which turns out to be exactly right for Isan-style Thai cooking this loud and alive. This Elmhurst restaurant earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand for fiery northeastern Thai food built for sharing, heavy on dried shrimp, electric fish sauce, and whole fried fish. Showing up alone is technically possible but spiritually inadvisable. A New York Times top-100 pick.

  8. The smell of charcoal-grilled sausages hits you before you reach the door of this family-run shophouse restaurant in Khon Kaen. The kitchen turns out traditional Isan pork and beef, sun-dried beef slices, spicy sour beef shank soup, and the grilled beef tongue that regulars know to reserve ahead. It's an old-school institution, priced the way neighborhood places used to be, and it holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  26. A tuk tuk parked in the back of a Fort Lauderdale strip mall sets the tone at this no-reservations Isan Thai restaurant, where the menu runs well past the usual curry-and-pad-thai circuit. The kitchen leans into the northeastern Thai repertoire, and when they ask how spicy you want it, they mean it as a real question. The Michelin Guide has taken notice, and the crowd filing in on a weeknight suggests word has been around for a while.

  28. Named for a character in a Thai folktale about twelve sisters, this cozy Southern Thai restaurant on the Lower East Side opens with cocktails named for the rest of the family. The menu is compact and the spice levels are not. Southern Thai and Isan dishes carry real heat and personality, and the coconut ice cream served inside a coconut shell is the only sensible way to end things.

  29. Isan-style som tum made with fermented fish paste is the point of this simple basement Thai spot on Gerrard, and the heat scale runs to levels most menus don't acknowledge. The papaya salad comes with salted crab if you want the full classic treatment, and the grilled pork jowl has quietly become the other reason regulars keep coming back. No alcohol, but the café next door handles drinks, which feels like a very sensible arrangement.

    Modern Isan

The khao soi here swaps the usual chicken for duck confit, which tells you something about how seriously this East Village restaurant takes the Isaan cooking of Northeastern Thailand. The menu is short and the kitchen leans into that, making each dish with the kind of care that only works at small scale. The Michelin Guide has taken notice. Taro ice cream over coconut sticky rice closes things out on a note nobody argues with.

  34. A riverside Isan restaurant styled after the old Lan Chang province, all black-painted wood with red and gold trim and terrace seats carved from dark tree stumps. The kitchen leans into local fish, deboned and prepared in the regional way, with vegetables grown on-site and pickled in-house using fresh coconut water. Come before sunset, when the Mun River view earns the name.

  35. Hanging ivies, bamboo lanterns, and a menu that opens with raw blue crab tucked into an Isaan papaya salad, which is either the dish that converts you or sends you to the safer side of the menu. This Thai restaurant in San Carlos leans hard into northeastern Thailand, where the food runs funky, sour, and intensely aromatic. The grilled pork jowl with its house fish sauce dip is the kind of thing regulars order before they sit down.

  36. The larb comes one way: hot or Thai hot, and the co-owner will tell you which to order. This neighborhood Thai bistro in North Miami runs on Isan flavors, the kind that are fragrant and punchy in equal measure, and the whole fried snapper with house chile sauce has regulars coming back for it specifically. The New York Times named it among Miami's 25 best restaurants. Small room, big cooking, and Ricky himself helps out over the summer.

  37. Rank 36. Thaipark

    Isan Food Truck

Dozens of Thai vendors set up under bright umbrellas in a Wilmersdorf park on weekends, April through October, weather permitting. It's an outdoor street market tradition that's been around for decades, drawing people from across the city for homemade noodle soups, curries, and Isan-regional dishes cooked out of home kitchens. A recent relocation shifted things to Württembergische Strasse, just alongside the park, but the format stays the same: bring cash, find a patch of grass, eat well.

  38. Illustrated cartoon versions of the kitchen's own ingredients cover the walls at this Isaan Thai spot in Oakland's Dimond District, which sets the tone nicely. The khao soi has a creamy, spicy broth that earns its keep, and the nam khao, fried rice with fermented pork and sharp slivers of ginger, has a crunch you can hear across the table. Grilled salmon wrapped in coconut leaves arrives with a sauce that manages sour, sweet, and spicy all at once without negotiating.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
