  1. A three-Michelin-star chalet perched above Megève, where the chef forages the Alps and Lake Geneva for what goes on the plate: char, wild herbs, mountain cheese, and the occasional langoustine that has no business being this high up. Emmanuel Renaut grew up besotted with Haute-Savoie, and it shows in every course, though he clearly enjoys pushing against the rustic-mountain-cooking expectations that come with the address.

  2. Rank 2. Avize

    Southern Alpine

A taxidermy mountain goat watches over the dining room, which tells you most of what you need to know about the vibe. Avize is an Alpine French wine bar and restaurant where the menu pulls from France, Switzerland, Italy, and Austria, all filtered through Southern ingredients. Frog legs nod to an Atlanta wing institution. The drinks program is serious enough to earn a James Beard semifinalist nod, and North America's 50 Best ranks it at number 29.

  3. The kitchen garden outside the terrace window isn't decoration; it's where dinner starts. This is a two-Michelin-star fine dining restaurant in a historic village building, built around what the chef calls "Alpine Cuisine," a decades-long commitment to the mountains and valleys around Golling. Classical technique shapes the cooking, but contrasts and textures push it somewhere stranger. The vaulted wine cellar runs to thousands of labels, and the sommelier holds a Master Sommelier distinction.

  4. The terrace hangs high above St. Anton, which sets the tone before anyone's opened a menu. This two-Michelin-star fine dining room inside a boutique Alpine hotel pairs mountain luxury with cooking that takes classic technique somewhere more unexpected, the kind of contrasts where braised apricot and saffron hollandaise end up on the same plate as veal sweetbreads and it all makes sense. Around 600 labels on the wine list, and a set menu that sounds like a gap year but eats like a tasting menu.

  5. Vitus Winkler structures his tasting menu as a literal hike through altitude zones, moving from village to alpine pasture and up to the summit on the plate. This is fine dining inside Hotel Sonnhof, rooted in herbs, berries, and roots foraged from the surrounding mountains, with a complexity that never loses the flavor underneath it. A kitchen table for up to fourteen seats the adventurous directly in the action. Two Michelin stars.

    The awards

  6. Rank 6. Alpage

    French Alpine

Fine dining inside Hotel Annapurna, high up in Courchevel 1850, with bay windows that make the Alps feel like wallpaper you ordered on purpose. The chef works Savoyard tradition through a modern lens, pulling from local terroir in ways that feel grounded rather than showy. An open kitchen keeps things from tipping into stiff formality. It holds a Michelin star, and the service runs attentive enough to match.

    The awards

  7. Rank 6. Au 1465

    Modern Alpine

The dining room sits inside a hotel above Champex-Lac, with the Alps framing the window tables so aggressively that you half-expect an entrance fee. This is a Michelin-starred modern French restaurant where the chef draws on classical technique with quiet Italian and alpine inflections, local produce, and plating that takes itself seriously without tipping into severity. Light sauces, a vegetarian menu option, and cooking that knows when to stop.

    The awards

  8. Modern Alpine decor sets the room at this fine dining restaurant inside Das Marent hotel in the Tyrolean ski village of Fiss, where a Michelin star hangs over a menu that blends regional Austrian produce with unexpected international turns. The kitchen leans into the contrast confidently, pairing local trout with saffron vinegar or lamb with chorizo and jalapeño. The wine list tilts Austrian and Spanish, which feels right once you're in it.

    The awards

  9. Rank 6. Corso

    Modern Alpine

Franz Ackermann's artwork hangs against a minimalist interior just off the old town, and the open kitchen makes it clear this is a serious dinner destination. Markus Schenk holds a Michelin star for his Alpine cooking, a five-course evening menu that leans on seasonal ingredients without losing its footing in something recognizable. Lunch is a quieter, simpler affair for anyone with a meeting to get back to.

    The awards

  10. A one-Michelin-star dining room inside Hotel Bertelli, with wood and warm light doing the heavy lifting on alpine atmosphere. The kitchen runs two tasting menus, one rooted in the Trentino mountains and one that drifts toward the coast, with à la carte if you'd rather graze. The wine cellar clears 800 labels, curated with the kind of care that suggests the sommelier has strong opinions and enjoys sharing them.

    The awards

  11. Rank 6. Ursus

    Creative Alpine

The dining room is meant to look like a forest, and it mostly succeeds: slim trunks divide the tables into little clearings, a foliage canvas covers the ceiling, and walnut wood runs underfoot and across the tabletops. This Michelin-starred fine dining room, inside a hotel in the Val-Claret resort, takes its name from the brown bear still wandering these Alps. The chef trained under Jean-François Piège and now turns mountain herbs, game, and freshwater fish into creative Alpine cooking that follows the seasons closely. The cheese trolley is entirely Alpine.

  12. The awards

  13. Rank 13. Agritur El Mas

    Traditional Alpine

The cows, horses, and pigs outside are not decorative; they end up on the plate, as charcuterie, braised stews, and cheese dumplings made with the farm's own production. This agriturismo above Moena is the working-farm-restaurant in full Alpine earnest, with antique wood furnishings and a brazier anchoring the dining room. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place this straightforwardly good at what it does.

  15. Rank 13. Gasthaus Waltz

    Modern Alpine

Serviettenknödel alongside cordon bleu tells you what this place is doing: Alpine cooking that keeps one boot in tradition and lets the other wander. It's a lively, casual restaurant in the Glockenbackviertel, run by a young team with a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a wine list longer than you'd expect. The summer terrace fills up fast. Leave the car at home, because parking in the neighborhood is an exercise in optimism.

    The awards

  16. Rank 13. Landhaus Tanner

    Modern Alpine

A farmhouse restaurant outside Waging am See where almost everything on the plate was grown, raised, or foraged nearby, and the kitchen leans hard into the seasons. The room has a lounge feel that sits somewhere between cozy inn and quietly stylish, and the Slow Food membership is not just a wall plaque. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand. Hours shift with the calendar, so check before you go.

  17. An alpine chalet restaurant in Haute-Nendaz where the chef has been running his own culinary marathon since what feels like forever, pulling heritage recipes back into rotation alongside regional staples like Val Ferret lamb and Valais black truffles. The adjoining brasserie keeps things looser, with daily specials and a champagne beurre blanc that has no business being this casual. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and guestrooms upstairs if the mountain air gets to you.

    The awards

  18. Rank 18. Murmeli

    Contemporary Alpine

    The awards

  19. You reach this mountain restaurant by cable car from Riscone, then on foot through the snow, which sets expectations appropriately. Norbert Niederkofler's "Cook the Mountain" philosophy means the seasonal Alpine menu wastes nothing and imports nothing it doesn't have to. The five tables with the view go to tasting-menu guests, booked well ahead. The last cable car down leaves at 5pm, so yes, plan accordingly.

    The awards

  20. Rank 19. Batzenhäusl

    Adriatic Alpine

A country inn parked beside a small lake with a ruined castle in the background, which is either very romantic or very fairy-tale, depending on your mood. The kitchen leans Alpine-Adriatic, so expect oysters and whole fish alongside game and braised meat, the fish pulled from nearby Mondsee that morning. The wine list is international but tilts toward Austrian producers. Guestrooms are available if the drive back feels ambitious.

  22. The open charcoal grill at the center of the room does a lot of work here, both cooking the meat and explaining the whole vibe. This is a hotel restaurant in Grindelwald that leans into warm hardwood, designer lighting, and Alpine ingredients without feeling like a ski-lodge cliche. The menu runs from a proper Wiener schnitzel to signature cuts off the grill, with Swiss and French bottles handling the wine side of things.

    The awards

  23. Rank 19. black sheep

    Contemporary Alpine

The restaurant keeps its own sheep, which tells you something about how seriously the kitchen takes its Alpine-region sourcing. This fine dining room inside the Bergland hotel runs a set menu that pulls ingredients from within 200km, herbs from the garden included, then filters them through a quietly Japanese lens. The dark, chic interior suits the ambition. Sölden is ski country, so the contrast between the mountain setting and the composed, contemporary cooking is half the point.

  24. Rank 19. Brasserie Cuvilliés

    Bavarian Alpine Bistro

A ceramic piece by Angelika Maria Stiegler catches your eye before the open kitchen does, which is a good trick for a hotel brasserie. This is the dining room of the Rosewood Munich, doing Alpine-inflected fare in a chic, unhurried space, with Wiener schnitzel as a permanent fixture and a lunch menu that changes daily. The Theatinerstraße is steps away, so the after-shopping crowd fills the room at noon.

  25. Rank 19. Dorfhus Gupf

    Modern Alpine

The centerpiece of this Alpine restaurant is an open asado grill, where whole fish and large cuts of meat cook in plain sight. The room has a modern mountain feel without veering into kitsch, and the menu ranges widely, from schnitzel to fish curry. The wine list runs to around 1,300 labels, with a cellar holding thousands of bottles, some available to buy on the spot. A sommelier is on hand, which given the list's scale is less a luxury than a necessity.

    Regional Alpine

  27. Tucked into a small larch wood on the road to Passo Tre Croci, this agriturismo sits among the Dolomites and runs its own stable on the property. The restaurant leans hard into Alpine tradition: house-made charcuterie and aged cheeses share the table with creamy butter, local herbs, and berries foraged nearby. The kind of place where the ingredient list is basically a hike you could take after lunch.

    The awards

  28. Rank 19. Haller's

    Alpine

The terrace hangs over the valley at an altitude that makes the wine list feel earned, and Austria gets the starring role on that list. This fine dining restaurant inside a mountain hotel runs à la carte at lunch and a set menu in the evenings, moving between Wiener schnitzel and more inventive plates with equal comfort. The Alpine room is warm rather than fussy, and the view does a lot of the work before anyone takes an order.

    The awards

  29. The Gothic wine cellar here holds one of the more obsessive large-format bottle collections you'll find anywhere, heavy on Bordeaux and running from magnums up to primat and beyond. By day it's a ski hut with all that implies, but evenings shift toward Alpine fine dining, cosy and candlelit. The Wine Dome has a private table if you want your tasting to feel properly theatrical, which, given the setting, it will.

  35. You reach this high-altitude grill by funicular, which sets the tone. At over 3,000 meters on the Grande Motte glacier, it's a wood-lined Alpine dining room where staff in traditional costume bring out rib of beef, pork shoulder, and whole turbot cooked over live fire. The wine list runs past a thousand references, which is ambitious for a place you rode a cable car to reach. The views are what you'd expect, and the cooking is considerably better.

  37. Rank 19. Löffelspitze

    Seasonal Alpine

Named for the mountain looming above it at nearly 2,000 meters, this intimate restaurant inside Hotel Alpenstern serves a single eight-course menu built around seasonal and Alpine ingredients. Only a handful of tables keep it feeling close, and amuse-bouches arrive in the bar before you're shown to your seat. The wine list runs to over 2,000 labels, which is quietly absurd for somewhere this small, and cocktail pairings are on offer too.

  40. An antique wood-fired stove handles the cooking in one of the dining rooms, which tells you something about the pace expected here. Rauchkuchl is a family-run traditional restaurant in the Austrian Alps, old-school enough to have its own village bakery supplying the bread. The kitchen runs a seasonal surprise menu built around regional produce, some from their own garden, with Austrian and South Tyrolean wines to match.

  42. The terrace looks straight out at the Allgäu Alps, and in summer it's reason enough to plan your day around lunch. Inside, the restaurant at this Alpine hotel balances lodge-cozy with properly laid tables, serving country-inflected contemporary cooking that moves from pan-fried potatoes and braised ravioli through to venison and lobster depending on how ambitious you feel. The wine list is long and taken seriously.

    The awards

  43. The restaurant inside this small luxury hotel in Lech does Alpine classics without the kitschy antlers-and-lederhosen routine. The room is intimate and chic, the service attentive in that unhurried way that's harder to pull off than it looks. Char from nearby Zug shows up on a menu that swings between a set dinner and à la carte options, and the Kaiserschmarrn at the end gives you a reason to pace yourself. Winter only, which at least makes the reservation easier to justify.

    The awards

  44. A former hiking lodge on a wooded mountain top you reach by a 50-minute walk or a shuttle bus, which tells you something about the commitment level required before dinner. The open kitchen grills over an open fire, and the menu is short, either à la carte or a surprise tasting. Simple guestrooms mean you can skip the hike home entirely. The Michelin Guide lists it among its selected restaurants.

    The awards

  45. The family's homemade Bärmut, a vermouth-style aperitif they bottle themselves, is the right way to start a meal here. This polished Alpine dining room runs along a "from the Alps to the Adriatic" thread, so spit-roasted venison might land beside ricotta gnudi, and the aged Parmesan soup comes frothed. Set menus or à la carte courses from each, plus a board of daily specials. A secluded courtyard handles warm evenings with some grace.

  47. Raclette, schnitzel, spätzle, and a frosty Bavarian beer in a chalet-style dining room: Alpenrose leans into Alpine tradition without apology. This cozy European restaurant has been an old-school Vail institution, and a 2018 ownership change by the team behind neighboring Almresi kept the Old World spirit intact. Summer brings a flower-filled patio; winter makes the case for staying inside with something warm and melted.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
