  3. Rank 2. Dim Sum Garden

    Shanghainese

Soup dumplings, made by hand, are the reason to find this Chinatown storefront, which has been a Philadelphia institution for long enough that regulars still refer to the old address. It's a casual Chinese restaurant with a broader menu than the xiao long bao headline suggests, running through stir-fries, noodles, and a full roster of house-made dumplings. The newer space added a bar and private dining room, but the vibe stayed mercifully unfussy.

Red and cream lanterns glow over a warren of nooks on St. Marks Place, where a line almost always trails out the front door. Che Li is a Shanghainese seafood-leaning restaurant with an ambitious menu, so asking the server about regional highlights beats scrolling to the familiar end. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, and the fish stew with Sichuan peppercorns tends to be the last thing standing on the table.

    Shanghainese

A Shanghai restaurant in Murray Hill where the vegetable dishes alone could anchor a meal, which tells you something about the kitchen's priorities. The crispy eel arrives sweet and glossy and somehow disappears before you've decided you like it. Pork and crab soup dumplings lean restrained rather than explosive, and the mapo tofu is silken and properly fiery. Dark walls, warm light, a small bar up front. The Michelin Bib Gourmand is on record here.

  28. A Chinese restaurant in Higashiazabu that has been around forever, with a menu running past 100 à la carte dishes spanning Shanghai, Cantonese, and regional styles from across China. The kitchen leans traditional, working with seasonal ingredients and preparations like whole steamed grouper and Jinhua pork fillet. It's the kind of place where ordering too much is the whole point, and the table fills up accordingly.

Bamboo plants in the window, dragon heads and red lanterns inside, and a dining room that stays busy enough that you probably shouldn't show up without a plan. This Shanghainese spot near Plaza de España builds its menu around xiaolongbao, shengjian bao, wonton, and hand-pulled lamian noodles, the kind of focused cooking that makes a short menu feel like a complete argument. The crowd skews young and loud, which suits the room.

  44. The full bar sets Fortune Nong Jia Le apart from its Wash Park sibling, though the kitchen stays on the same page: dumplings, Shanghainese noodles, and fried rice alongside heartier plates like crispy half duck in soy reduction and pork belly with potatoes. It's a casual Chinese restaurant that trends slightly more polished than most in its orbit, the kind of place where the menu reads like someone's grandmother is actually cooking.

  45. Rank 44. House of Nanking

    Shanghainese

The menu here is basically a suggestion, since the family running this Chinatown restaurant has been known to steer you away from it entirely and just decide what you're eating. That's not arrogance so much as confidence, and the Shanghainese cooking that lands on the table tends to justify the approach. Pork confit egg rolls with basil and chile sauce are a signature. Cash in on the experience; just don't expect to be in charge.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
