  2. Hunan cooking is a different beast from the Cantonese or Szechuan you probably know, and this Kendall Square restaurant is one of the few places around Boston doing it right. The Michelin Bib Gourmand goes to a menu built around heat, funk, and ferment, where even the General Tso's runs on a house-made sauce. The spicy cucumbers alone have regulars ordering doubles. A lively room, casual prices, and the kind of food that makes you ignore your phone.

    Hunan

Hunan cuisine gets less airtime in Hong Kong than Cantonese or Sichuan, and Fu Rong Wu Shuang is quietly making that case in Central. It's a polished, sit-down Chinese restaurant from the Xin Rong Ji group, with interiors by André Fu Studio, so the room is easy on the eyes. The menu leans into Hunanese classics with a lighter touch, and the stinky tofu, fermented with squid ink and black mushrooms before frying, tends to stop the table.

  10. Hunan cooking gets less Bay Area attention than its Cantonese and Sichuan cousins, which makes this snug Millbrae restaurant worth knowing about. The heat here comes with smoke and funk, built from cured meats, fermented black beans, and pickled chilis rather than pure fire. Grab one of the carved booths in the back if you can, where you're close enough to the kitchen to feel invested. The Michelin Guide has had its eye on this place for a reason.

  17. The lazy Susans are built into the tables, which tells you this is a big, convivial Chinese restaurant in Mesa that expects you to arrive hungry and in numbers. The menu swings wide, from Hunan-style heat and dry pot to roasted duck and dumplings, with enough Americanized classics to keep the table's one holdout happy. The takeout bags flying out the door suggest the neighborhood has already figured this place out.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
