  1. Rank 1. Oyster Oyster

    Vegetarian American

A nine-course vegetable tasting menu in Shaw where the chef holds a James Beard Award and a Michelin star, and still manages to make a beet taste like pastrami. Rob Rubba's kitchen treats local farms as the whole point, not a selling line, and the results are the kind of thing that makes omnivores quietly reconsider their priorities. The bread alone, enriched with "garleeks" and served with sunflower-marigold butter, gets talked about for days afterward.

  2. A pitched-roof skylight fills the minimalist dining room with natural light, and the handpicked ceramics suggest you're somewhere that has thought carefully about everything. Lamdre is a fine-dining vegan restaurant in Sanlitun holding two Michelin stars and a spot on Asia's 50 Best list, where a seasonally changing menu draws on China's regional traditions and the chef's research trips into the country's lesser-known ingredients. The name comes from Tibetan Buddhism, which tells you the vibe isn't purely culinary.

  3. Rank 2. Mita

    Latin American

Plant-based Peruvian tasting menus in Shaw sounds like a premise that requires a disclaimer, yet Mita holds a Michelin star and a James Beard nomination for Best New Restaurant. The chef's team pulls from across Latin America, so the flavors run from Andean to coastal without apology. Two tasting menu lengths mean you can commit at whatever level feels reasonable on a Tuesday. The bar program is serious enough that Punch named the team among its best new bartenders.

  4. Seaweed pressings on deep blue walls and dried grasses set the coastal mood at this small, plant-forward restaurant in Kitsilano. The menu rotates around whatever vegetables the kitchen is currently obsessing over, and the cooking is the kind that makes omnivores forget to keep score. A no-tipping policy made headlines when it opened, but the food is what keeps people coming back. It holds a Michelin Guide selection.

  5. Rank 5. Ark

    Vegan Japanese

  6. Rank 5. KLE

    Vegan Mediterranean

A Michelin-starred vegan restaurant tucked into a corner plot near Wiedikon, KLE has the warm, informal feel of a neighborhood pub that happens to serve some of the more quietly thrilling food in Zurich. The chef's Moroccan roots and time cooking in New York and Switzerland surface in dishes that are unfussy but pointed. Solo diners get a converted phone booth. Everyone else books ahead and lets the seasonal surprise menu do the talking.

  7. Frankfurt's narrowest building turns out to hold a Michelin-starred vegan restaurant, which feels like exactly the sort of thing Frankfurt would do. Floor-to-ceiling windows look over the River Main while the team works through a five-hour tasting menu, all guests eating together, the chef narrating each course. Produce comes largely from the restaurant's own farm. Book far ahead; a table here is not something you stumble into.

  10. Rank 10. Anixi

  11. Funk is a plant-based bakery in Zuid whose croissants shatter like they have something to prove, all without a gram of butter. The ground floor has the best light and a calm that feels almost suspicious for a place with a pastry case this good. Showing up shortly before 10 gets you a table and a short queue, and the kitchen then starts on savory plates, which aren't all vegan.

  12. Rank 12. Apteka

    Vegan Eastern European

Potato pierogi with czarna salsa is the kind of detail that stops you mid-sentence. Apteka is a vegan sit-down restaurant in Bloomfield riffing on Central and Eastern European cooking, and the menu reads like someone's Polish grandmother went fully plant-based and never looked back. The homemade cordials and tinctures are their own thing, worth ordering slowly. A James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic.

  13. Sunchoke with salal berry and burnt onion isn't a dish you'd find yourself ordering on instinct, which is part of the point at this creative vegetarian fine-dining room in Mount Pleasant. The kitchen names its organic BC suppliers on the menu and takes texture as seriously as flavor. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and first-timers tend to do well surrendering to the tasting menu rather than pretending they know what salal berry tastes like.

  14. Rank 14. Faubourg Daimant

    Vegan French

Stuffed cabbage arrives in a sauceboat of jus at this vegan bistro on a street that has quietly become a destination for serious eaters. The kitchen works from French bourgeois tradition, just without the butter and cream, which sounds like a contradiction until the food arrives and you stop thinking about it. Croquettes, glazed king trumpet mushrooms, lentil pâté: the sharing plates lean generous, and the room stays unpretentious about the whole thing.

  15. Rank 14. Shizen

    Vegan Sushi

A vegan sushi bar and izakaya in the Mission where the kitchen treats a vegetable as a puzzle to solve rather than a garnish to apologize for. The team ferments, pickles, and sears produce into nigiri, rolls, and ramen that hold their own on the merits, not on goodwill. The room is sleek and lively, drawing skeptics alongside the converted. A Michelin Selected Restaurant.

  16. Rank 14. Tumerico

    Plant-based Mexican

Colorful murals from local artists cover every wall at this plant-based Latin restaurant on East 6th, where the smell of spices hits you before the door closes. The menu is scratch-made and mostly vegan, pulling from Mexican and Latin traditions with jackfruit carnitas and al pastor tacos that don't apologize for the absence of meat. The chef was a James Beard semifinalist in 2024, which tracks with how seriously the kitchen takes the food.

  19. A Center City brownstone that's been quietly making the case for vegan fine dining from its spot on Locust Street. Inside, the space unfolds across several rooms with the feeling of a very elegant townhouse, warm lighting and all. The plant-based menu leans into seasonal ingredients and international flavors, so dishes arrive with a sharpness that gives the table something to argue over. Seasonal cocktails and attentive service round out what amounts to a full night.

  20. The cocktails here are built from kitchen scraps, tinctures and syrups made from what most places throw away, which tells you everything about how seriously this modern Latin vegan restaurant takes its zero-waste kitchen. The menu swings from Yucatecan pumpkin-seed dips to a jackfruit Cubano, and the seitan carne asada crunchwrap is an unironic love letter to Taco Bell that somehow works completely on its own terms.

  22. Rank 22. ALT.a

    Vegan Chinese

Vegan Chinese food that doesn't feel like a compromise is the premise here, and ALT.a makes a reasonable case for it. The kitchen reimagines classics like jjamppong and tangsuyuk using only plant-based ingredients, leaning on crisp coatings and chewy textures where the meat usually does the convincing. The cooking runs notably light, which keeps the whole meal from feeling like a statement. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

    The awards

  23. The outdoor bar lives inside a repurposed shipping container, which tells you something about this brewpub's sensibility. Arizona Wilderness pours a rotating slate of seasonal ales alongside house classics, and the kitchen keeps pace with oversized burgers, an Arizonan hot fried chicken sandwich, and duck fat fries that have developed their own following. The vegan options are less afterthought than actual draw. Bench seating, a beer garden, and desert weather do the rest.

  24. Rank 22. Brota

    Vegan Brazilian

A mansion in Botafogo with a garden out front and red mouldings framing the doors inside, Brota is a vegetarian and vegan restaurant where the food is built for sharing. The kitchen leans inventive, with rice balls and curries doing more interesting work than you might expect. The bar is impressive enough that you won't be nursing sparkling water all night. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  28. Rank 22. Vegan Ramen UZU

    Vegan Japanese Noodle Shop

A ramen shop where teamLab designed the dining room, so expect digital art that mirrors left and right across black tables and India-ink brushwork on the walls. The menu is fully vegan, and everyone sits at one long communal table, which either sounds like your thing or it doesn't. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the bowl holds up its end of that bargain.

    The awards

  29. Rank 29. Tacos Veganos

    Vegan Mexican

Jackfruit quesabirria tacos with plant-based mozzarella are the headline at this vegan Mexican taco shop in the Arcadia neighborhood, a casual counter-order spot where the menu reads like any solid taqueria, right down to the bucket of Modelos. Burritos come stuffed with rice, beans, fries, and your pick of plant-based protein, which is either very 2010s or exactly what you wanted. The kind of place carnivores get dragged to and then quietly admit was fine.

  30. A vegan trattoria a short walk from Termini that makes its name doing Roman classics without any animal products, cacio e pepe and amatriciana included. The room is casual and unpretentious, the portions are honest, and the menu runs from supplì to seitan mains, so there's no shortage of places to land. A good stop whether you're vegan or just curious what Roman comfort food looks like when the kitchen redraws the rules.

  31. Rank 31. Ali Pacha

    Vegan Peruvian

    The awards

  32. Rank 33. Arrecrià

    Vegan Italian

A vegan bistro where the kitchen produces something close to spaghetti alle vongole without a single clam in sight, coaxing the texture and flavor from an emulsion of pea water and vegetable fat. The rest of the menu runs the same way: fondues, lasagnas, and ravioli built on plant-based cheeses rather than dairy. The room is welcoming and the service is sharp, which helps when you're asking diners to set aside a lifetime of Neapolitan culinary assumptions.

  34. Plant-forward fine dining in Lucerne, where a seven-course set menu turns cauliflower and macadamia into the kind of food you'd normally need meat to feel satisfied by. The name is a phonetic riff on "bites," which tells you the kitchen has a sense of humor. The room goes minimalist and upscale without tipping into cold, and the service keeps pace without the stiffness that tends to follow linen napkins around.

  35. A Keith Haring sculpture in red stands against raised vegetable beds, herb patches, and forest edge on the third-floor terrace of The Dolder Grand. This is a seasonal outdoor vegan restaurant, open only from May to September and only when the weather cooperates, so your reservation comes with a weather clause. The kitchen turns out modern plant-based cooking that leans hard into whatever the garden is producing that week.

    The awards

  36. Rank 35. Gauthier - Soho

    Vegan French

You ring a doorbell to get in, which sets the tone for everything that follows. This is a formal vegan tasting menu restaurant inside a handsome Regency townhouse in Soho, where Alexis Gauthier applies a classical French kitchen sensibility to entirely plant-based seasonal menus. It draws the kind of crowd that arrives dressed up and with something to celebrate, which is probably the right mindset for a vegan dinner that feels nothing like one.

  38. Vegan dining in Vienna could mean a lot of things, and at lara, near Passauer Platz, it means seasonal and regional produce handled with enough imagination to make the menu feel like actual cooking rather than a manifesto. The room has an urban, on-trend feel with a counter along the open kitchen. Breakfast, a small lunch menu, and dinner are all on offer, or you can just pull up a stool at the bar.

  39. The cheerful mishmash of colorful accessories and authentic Thai furnishings signals exactly what kind of meal you're in for at this casual vegan Thai spot in Friedrichshain. The chef draws on his homeland's street food traditions, building dishes around sweet, spicy, and subtly heated flavors that stay full-bodied without tipping into fire. A good place to find that pad thai craving and discover you didn't miss the fish sauce at all.

  40. Rank 35. Oukan

    Vegan Japanese

The entrance is tucked away enough that finding it feels intentional, and the long mirrored corridor before you reach the dining room rather sets the tone. Inside, a vegan Japanese tasting menu leans hard on fermentation, which the kitchen pursues seriously enough to run its own fermentation lab. The set menu is spare-looking on the plate and considerably more involved than it appears. Tea pairings are treated as a main event, not an afterthought.

  41. A vegan restaurant in a lively Hanover neighborhood where the chefs also carry the plates and explain what's on them, which sounds like a gimmick until you realize they can actually answer your questions. The six-course menu leans on seasonal regional produce, fermented and preserved as far as the kitchen can stretch it. Organic wines, a genuinely relaxed room, and owners who seem to be there every night complete the picture. About fifteen minutes by tram from the main station.

  44. Rank 35. Treintaitrés

    Plant-based Spanish

A small olive tree grows inside the dining room, which tells you something about how seriously Treintaitrés takes its plant-based identity. This Tudela restaurant leans on the region's famous vegetable-growing tradition, running an à la carte alongside tasting menus, with a terrace out front and quieter rooms upstairs for when you need them. The family has been in hospitality forever, and it shows in the unhurried pace of things.

  46. Rank 35. Virens

    Plant-based Mediterranean

Rodrigo de la Calle, the chef who built a reputation around plant-based cooking in Spain, advises this Barcelona restaurant where vegetables grown by small local producers do most of the heavy lifting. A few fish and rice dishes round out the menu, but the point is the plant kingdom, explored across an à la carte and three tasting menus. Dress accordingly: this is the kind of dinner that takes its organic sourcing seriously.

  47. The restaurant inside spa hotel Weißes Roß sits right beside the village church, which sets the scene nicely. Inside, warm colors and modern design make it feel considered without feeling stiff. The kitchen runs an all-vegan menu built around seasonal ingredients, offered as a four-course set with an optional surprise course, or à la carte. Wine pairings and alcohol-free alternatives are both on the table, so nobody is left improvising.

  49. Rank 52. Cheese Board Pizza

    Vegetarian Pizzeria

A worker-owned collective in the Gourmet Ghetto, Cheese Board bakes one vegetarian sourdough pizza per day, rotating with the seasons, and you either want it or you don't. You probably want it. The line wraps around the block most days, but it moves fast, and the green sauce, herby and quietly ferocious, is non-negotiable. Grab a slice, claim a parklet table, and settle into the reliably frenetic sidewalk energy Berkeley does so well.

  50. The floor-to-ceiling windows face the Bay, and if you time it right you'll be watching the sunset over the Golden Gate while eating wild mushroom gumbo. This old-school vegetarian restaurant at Fort Mason has been around forever, loosely affiliated with the San Francisco Zen Center, which explains why the dining room feels so unusually calm. 51. Rank 52. The Cultured Pickle Shop

    Vegetarian American

Rows of cloudy jars exhaling tiny bubbles line the production kitchen at this small-batch pickle shop and weekend rice-bowl counter in Berkeley. Saturday and Sunday bring a three-course menu built around a maximalist rice bowl piled with the shop's latest ferments: kimchis, citrusy pickles, miso-braised greens. Drinks run to yuzu kombucha or warm ginger amazake. It may be the most Berkeley restaurant of all time, which is saying something.

  52. Rank 55. Cha-Ya

    Vegan Japanese

Vegan Japanese in the Mission, where the menu reads like an argument that tofu never needed meat to earn its place. Cha-Ya has been around forever, with roots in Berkeley's produce-obsessed dining scene, and the cooking stays rustic and unfussy: brothy soups, deep-fried tofu in mushroom-seaweed dashi, sushi rolls packed with pickled and steamed vegetables. Sidewalk tables if you want to watch Valencia Street do its thing.

  53. A food truck that does one thing: pav bhaji, the Mumbai street staple of spiced, buttered vegetable gravy served with soft, toasted rolls for scooping. The bhaji gets its richness from Amul butter, and the locally made pav handles like Parker House rolls. Spicy, cheesy, or both are your main decisions. Order extra bread regardless, because the gravy always wins the race. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's top South Asian and top vegetarian spots.

The "mozzarella" here is made from tapioca starch and coconut oil, which tells you everything about Gemello's approach. It's a vegan pizza shop in Prenzlauer Berg where the chef, a trained chemical engineer, makes every substitute from scratch: almond ricotta, miso-tofu feta, eggplant anchovy. The crust runs thin with a wide, airy edge and toppings that hold their shape. Carnivores reportedly stop asking questions after the first slice. Book ahead.

Vegan croissants that make you forget to ask whether they're vegan: that's the opening argument at this pastry shop in East LA, run by a chef whose work with nondairy butter has quietly shifted what the format can do. The Danishes lean on fruit from the Santa Monica Farmers' Market, and the annual pithivier has developed its own following. The New York Times named it among the top bakeries in the country.

The pho broth here is light and fragrant with onion and ginger, and the soy-protein brisket has enough chew to make you question your assumptions. This all-vegan Asian restaurant, connected to the Loving Hut network, runs through a long menu of pad Thai, wonton soup, and claypot rice without any of it feeling like a consolation prize. It's a Civic Center lunch spot with real intentions and very reasonable prices.

  65. Rank 62. Greenr Cafe

  66. Rank 62. Jah Jah

    Vegan Caribbean

Jah Jah started life as a vegan hot dog tricycle and has since settled into a proper Afro-Caribbean canteen, complete with Bob Marley portraits, Jamaican flags, and a reggae soundtrack that never gets a day off. The all-vegan menu runs to tempeh skewers, barbecue cauliflower wings, and bowls built on yams and acheke. 69. Rank 62. Obon Shokudo

    Vegan Japanese

Obon Shokudo is a small, bright Japanese comfort food spot on SE Grand where the whole menu happens to be vegan, a fact it mentions about as loudly as a houseplant. Udon comes in brothy curry or chilled with sesame, and the onigiri get a smear of miso made from things like hominy or pistachios. Fermented hot sauce and tofu get made in-house too. Portland Monthly put it on its 50 Best Restaurants list.

  70. Rank 62. Sogo Tofu

    Vegetarian Taiwanese

The Huang family has been pressing organic artisan tofu here for decades, and the shop has quietly grown into a full hub for Taiwanese vegetarian cooking. Pick up frozen dumplings, house soy products, or pull up to the hot bar and have things ladled into a bento box. Not every item is vegan, but the staff will tell you exactly where anything lands. The San Francisco Chronicle named it one of the Bay Area's top vegetarian and vegan spots.

  73. Tomato nigiri, marinated and roasted until it snaps like fish, is probably the argument you'd make to a skeptic. Tane is a vegan izakaya and sushi spot in Berkeley, a sibling to San Francisco's Shizen, where the rice is taken seriously and the plant-based fills lean toward smoked beets and pickled fruit rather than an avocado-forward shrug. 76. The servers here will gladly walk you through the nuances of vegan cheeses without a trace of condescension, which sets the tone for this plant-based restaurant in Cow Hollow. The menu reads like a convincing case for skipping meat, and the burgers, built on mushrooms and spinach with chipotle aioli and tomato chutney, give skeptics a comfortable entry point. A good first date for the vegan-curious.

    Vegan Vietnamese Food Truck

  81. A vegan brewpub where the kitchen makes its own ferments, and you can buy a jar to take home if one wins you over. Nachos arrive topped with mole-braised hibiscus; a crudités spread leans on cashew queso. The rotating ferment list, cabbage-pear kimchi one week, seasonal giardiniera the next, turns ordering into a low-stakes experiment. Downtown San Jose, tucked between two bakeries, which says something about the neighborhood's current priorities.

  83. Rank 85. Sinfull Bakery

    Vegan Bakery

Vegan kolaches stuffed with plant-based sausage, bacon, egg, and cheese are the kind of thing that makes you stop arguing about what veganism can and can't do. This Midtown bakery has been supplying Houston coffee shops with its pastries for years, so there's a decent chance you've already eaten here without knowing it. The Everything Bar, loaded with nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate chips, is a regular reason to come back.

  85. Rank 91. Crossroads Kitchen

    Plant-Based Mediterranean

White tablecloths and a room that doesn't announce itself as vegan, even a little. Crossroads Kitchen is a refined plant-based Mediterranean restaurant on Melrose where Tal Ronnen's cooking reads as fine dining first and a lifestyle statement never. The French onion soup arrives without beef broth and nobody at the table notices anything missing. A-list regulars treat the bar like a neighborhood spot, which is either aspirational or just Tuesday in Los Angeles.

    Vegan Sri Lankan

Mirisata is a counter-service Sri Lankan spot on Belmont, and it's fully vegan, worker-owned, and tip-free, which covers three Portland personality types in one stop. The daily rice and curry arrives on a banana leaf, with four rotating dishes at different heat levels. The roti and pastries are worth a second order if you're bringing company. Eat inside or at the patio picnic tables, and it's listed among Eater's 38 Best Restaurants and Food Carts in Portland.

  87. Rank 91. Planta Queen

    Vegan Pan-Asian Sushi

Planta Queen is an upscale vegan restaurant on North Clark, part of a chain that dresses its plant-based menu in design-forward rooms. The sushi stands in for fish with eggplant, watermelon, and carrots, which is a lot of faith in a carrot. Monday brings unlimited maki for $35, and lunch has a two-course special. Expect a polished crowd that came for dinner, not a lecture.

  89. Rank 96. Nami

    Vegan Ice Cream Shop

A renovated house on North 7th Street is now a vegan ice cream, coffee, and pastry shop where the Tsoynami, a housemade soy-based ice cream in over 20 Blizzard-style flavors, is the thing people come back for. The affogato, ice cream and chocolate syrup drowned in espresso, is a strong supporting argument. Cupcakes, cookies, and rotating daily specials round out the case for plants as dessert.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
