  2. An elegant white villa in Changning where dinner requires advance planning, because many dishes must be pre-ordered before you arrive. This is refined Chaoshan cooking, the kind built on poaching, steaming, and braising, with light, precise seafood and vegetarian preparations served across five private rooms. There is no walk-in crowd, no open dining room, and no sense of hurry. The restaurant holds two Michelin stars.

  3. Nine private rooms tucked inside a building that also contains a furniture showroom and a Japanese tea room, which tells you something about the neighborhood's ambitions. This is a refined Chiu Chow restaurant where the menu bends around seasonal availability and what you actually feel like eating. The kitchen works in the old regional tradition without being precious about it, and the whole thing holds a Michelin star.

A wave sculpture runs the full length of the ceiling, which tells you something about how seriously this place takes its own idea. Chao Yue is a fine-dining Chaozhou restaurant where the kitchen reinterprets Chiu Chow culinary tradition through prix fixe menus built to feel like a single continuous argument. The service is unusually considered, and the room is quiet enough that it actually matters.

  33. Teochew rice porridge, served in a clay pot, is what draws people to this casual Millbrae spot, and it does the job quietly and well. The gingery porridge is technically for two but has a way of multiplying when chive pancakes and an order of Chinese doughnuts join the table. Pick your add-ons, crab and prawn being the house move, then customize the bowl with scallions and preserved olive vegetables at the table.

  34. Silk chandeliers and vintage collectibles set the mood in this dimly lit, courtyard-style Chiu Chow restaurant in Futian, where the kitchen follows the 24 solar terms as a guide to what's on the plate. The team, mostly Chaoshan natives, leans into heritage recipes and lu shui marinated dishes with a seasonal, back-to-basics discipline. A South China Morning Post 100 Top Tables pick, it draws the kind of crowd that arrives knowing exactly what to order.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
