Rank 1. Kin Khao
Thai
Tucked into an alcove of the Parc 55 hotel, this modern Thai restaurant holds a Michelin star and earns it without any of the usual fanfare. Chef Pim Techamuanvivit cooks the food she grew up eating in Bangkok, rooted in tradition but built around Northern California produce from small local farms. The spice levels are sincere rather than decorative, and a few dishes will require a moment of quiet reflection before the next bite.

Rank 2. Restaurant Naides
Filipino, Contemporary
Menus printed on pineapple-leaf paper set the tone at this intimate tasting counter in Nob Hill, where the team reimagines Filipino pantry staples through fermentation, foraging, and the kind of tweezered precision that signals a long night ahead (in the good way). The twelve-course menu pulls Californian foraged ingredients into dishes rooted in tradition without being enslaved to it. Dressed-up but not stiff, the sort of place that earns its formality by actually being fun.

Rank 3. Benu
Korean
A courtyard full of earthenware crocks, each housing a different fermentation experiment, is how Corey Lee introduces himself before you've touched a menu. Benu is a tasting menu restaurant in SoMa holding three Michelin stars, and the dining room's monastic quiet makes the food's color and technical audacity land harder. Lee's Korean roots fold into California's pantry across a long, ever-changing progression where restraint does more work than flash.

Rank 4. Quince
Fine dining
The dining room was overhauled in fawn and sage, the ceilings soar, and there is velvet, which tells you exactly what kind of evening you're walking into. Quince is a tasting-menu restaurant in Jackson Square where the kitchen draws heavily from its own farm, and the chef holds three Michelin stars and a James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef. Service runs seamlessly without tipping into ceremony, which at this level is the harder trick.

Salvaged gold floral chandeliers hang over lazy Susans in a high-ceilinged Chinatown room where Brandon Jew, a James Beard Award winner with a Michelin star, reworks the Cantonese cooking of his youth with California produce and genuine affection. Italian
The building was a church before it became one of San Francisco's finest Italian dining rooms, and the solemn A-frame ceiling still sets the mood: white linens, mellow jazz, sommeliers who treat the cellar like a calling. Then the food arrives and the whole genteel setup gets quietly subverted. Suzette Gresham holds two Michelin stars, and her kitchen pairs French-trained sauce work with Italian soul and a surprisingly playful hand.

Cantonese
Walls plastered with Polaroids and faded Cantopop posters set the mood at this Chinatown restaurant, where the cooking is as high-energy as the room. The menu is compact Cantonese with a loose, playful hand: claypot rice with bacon and sausage, mapo tofu spaghetti that shouldn't work but clearly does. Reservations vanish fast, and the walk-in line forms before doors open. Bon Appétit and Esquire both named it among America's best new restaurants in 2024.

An open hearth anchors this airy SoMa tasting menu restaurant, and the kitchen uses it with more finesse than the setting might suggest. Chef Christopher Bleidorn holds a two-star Michelin rating and earns it by pairing live-fire cooking with a real sense of play, lacquered quail assembled tableside like Peking duck, creek trout arriving as roe, dessert hidden under mochi. The room is elegant and the pacing unhurried, so clear your evening.

Northern Vietnamese
The ceiling, bar, and floors are all wood, giving this Northern Vietnamese restaurant a sleek, downtown-polished look that suits its Mason Street address. Lunch runs toward phở and bún chả for the neighborhood office crowd; dinner opens into turmeric cakes topped with caviar and braised short rib that take their time. Malaysian Indian
A Malaysian Indian tasting menu restaurant tucked into the Tenderloin, Azalina's trades the neighborhood's gray palette for the saturated colors and layered textures of a Penang night market. The chef grew up there, and the seasonal prix fixe traces Malaysian cooking's Chinese, Indian, Malay, and European overlaps through a California lens. A James Beard semifinalist and listed in the New York Times and Condé Nast Traveler, it earns the attention without announcing itself.

Nordic New American
Hip-hop rattles through a spare warehouse space while tattooed cooks walk each course to the table, and that tension is the whole point of Kiln. Chef John Wesley runs a two-and-a-half-hour tasting menu that leans Nordic, leaning hard on curing, fermentation, and drying, though France and Japan show up too. Fine dining
You don't see a menu at this Michelin-starred brunch tasting room in the Castro, which is either thrilling or mildly terrifying depending on your personality. The cooking is bold and a little chaotic in the best way, built on serious fine dining technique but with zero fussiness about it. Blue-and-white checkered floors and a big mural set the tone: this is not a quiet eggs-and-mimosas situation.

Servers arrive tableside with trays of heirloom corn varieties and raw mole ingredients before a single plate lands, which tells you exactly the kind of evening this is going to be. Californios is a two-Michelin-star tasting menu restaurant where Val Cantú runs Mexican culinary tradition through fine dining without flattening either one. Thai
Exposed pipes, factory windows, and earthy ceramics inside Hotel Kabuki set a mood that Thai restaurants rarely bother with. Nari holds a Michelin star for chef Pim Techamuanvivit's California-ingredient-driven cooking, which runs through a sharply contemporary Thai lens. The family-style menu changes with the seasons, so the squid, the curries, and the banana leaf parcels shift, but the kitchen's intensity doesn't. Three to five courses, ample choices at each turn, or hand it all to the kitchen. An AAA Five Diamond, and on Wine Enthusiast's Wine Restaurant Hall of Fame, if that helps justify the occasion.

Rank 71. Sungho
Traditional Korean
A K-pop playlist, house-made kimchi, and slow-simmered meat stews that take after someone's grandmother's kitchen, not a restaurant's: Sungho is a traditional Korean spot in the Tenderloin serving the kind of homey, hearty cooking that rarely surfaces in the Bay Area. The portions are built for sharing, the broth-heavy dishes run deep, and the room runs warm and a little loud. A Michelin Selected Restaurant.

Rank 72. Octavia
Modern New American
A Victorian-lined block in Lower Pac Heights is a suspiciously good address for a neighborhood restaurant, and the regulars here know it. Melissa Perello runs a warm, elegant room where the cooking leans on local produce without making a big speech about it. House-made pasta, a levain that arrives before you've settled in, and seasonal desserts that actually earn the menu space. Plan ahead: the tables go fast to people who live around the corner.

Rank 73. Izakaya Rintaro
Japanese
The booths are carved from redwood wine casks, the bar is Hinoki cedar, and the walls are smoothed red clay, so the room itself does a lot of work before the food arrives. Rintaro is an izakaya with a NorCal sensibility, meaning locally caught fish gets the sashimi treatment and the charcoal grill handles skewers with the same seriousness. The covered courtyard, ringed with citrus trees, is among the harder outdoor seats to snag in the city. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

The scent of caramelizing meat and lemon hits you at the door, which is a reliable sign of what kind of Greek restaurant this is: wood-grill-and-rotisserie-serious, with open fireplaces and staff who actually seem happy to see you. Kokkari has been a fixture in Jackson Square forever, pulling off the trick of feeling like an old-world taverna while the room fills with people in very expensive casual wear.

Rank 76. Minnie Bell’s Soul Movement
Southern, American
A mural of Fillmore Street circa 1962 covers the wall, which makes sense given that the chef grew up in the neighborhood and spent years dreaming of bringing her soul food restaurant here. The rosemary fried chicken, fragrant with fresh herbs and marinated in housemade spices, is the reason people line up, though the butter cornbread and mac and cheese give it real competition. Bon Appétit named it one of America's Best New Restaurants in 2025.

Rank 78. Capital
Cantonese
The salt-and-pepper chicken wings at this old-school Cantonese restaurant in Chinatown have a following that borders on devotional. Wok-tossed with garlic and jalapeño, the crunch when you bite in is audible across the room, which is either a party trick or a warning, depending on your table neighbors. The rest of the menu holds its own too, but the wings are why regulars come, and why they stay a little longer than planned.

Rank 79. La Tapatia Mexicatessen
Mexican
A Mexican grocery and taqueria that has been making its own tortillas and masa since forever, La Tapatia is the kind of place where the carnitas come out of trays in the front and into your burrito in the back. The chile relleno burrito, built around a melty cheese-stuffed poblano, is the move. Everything is made in-house, it's takeout only, and the San Francisco Chronicle has called it one of the Bay Area's finest.

Rank 81. Sato Omakase
Sushi
The soy-marinated tuna arrives dotted with freshly grated wasabi, a detail that quietly signals what kind of omakase this is. Sato runs a tight, polished counter in Japantown where the menu balances tradition and invention, lobster with dashi sitting alongside buttery hamachi belly lifted with yuzu. The luxury ingredients are present, but the restraint makes the stronger argument. Next door, sibling Sushi Sato offers a more casual, affordable take if the mood shifts.

Rank 83. The Anchovy Bar
Seafood
A small fish and wine bar from the team behind State Bird Provisions, built around the anchovy in all its salty, versatile glory. The menu wanders from toast loaded with local anchovies and grated tomato to squid stir-fried with kimchi and flat rice noodles, and somehow a vanilla tamarind sundae finished with dried fish lands as dessert. The room is warm and woody, the vibe relaxed enough that the ambition sneaks up on you.

Rank 84. Loquat
Jewish Bakery
A pastry shop on Gough inspired by Jewish diaspora baking, where every drink arrives with a cube of halva whether you asked for it or not. The team behind it came up through Tartine, and the instincts show: babka with a proper crust, pistachio cream puffs, spiced Turkish coffee cream pie. A James Beard Semifinalist for Outstanding Pastry Chef, and a cozy, specific kind of place that knows exactly what it wants to be.

Rank 85. Le Central
French
Le Central's neon sign above Bush Street has been announcing the cassoulet day count for what feels like forever, and the number is well into the five figures. This is an old-school French bistro, white tablecloths against exposed brick, curved booths, faux stained glass overhead. The cassoulet, duck and sausage and beans in a sauce that folds in a bit of the previous day's batch, is the reason regulars never open the menu.

You buy tickets here the way you'd buy them for theater, which is more or less what this is. Merchant Roots is an immersive tasting experience in SoMa where the theme shifts each season and dinner moves through multiple rooms with set design to match. The cooking keeps pace with the spectacle rather than hiding behind it. Bring a sense of humor about the whole premise, and you'll eat well while feeling mildly like you've tumbled down a rabbit hole.

The paper butter cover stamped with a cursive "S" tells you everything about Sam's Grill, a classic San Francisco seafood grill that has been around forever. Rows of coat hooks line the walls from an era when men wore hats, and the curtained back booths suggest generations of cioppino-fueled lunch intrigue. Tuxedoed servers deliver oysters Rockefeller to regulars who never need the menu. Weekday lunch is the move; dinner is largely theoretical.

Rank 89. Sam Wo Restaurant
Chinese
Sam Wo has been around forever, which in San Francisco's Chinatown means it has survived earthquakes, closures, new ownership, and the slow creep of chow mein tourists. It's an old-school Cantonese noodle house where the move is the steamed rice rolls stuffed with char siu, served with a swipe of hot mustard that will clear your sinuses immediately. The tea program has gotten an upgrade, with oolongs and pu-erhs now on offer, though the rice porridge with fried doughnut remains unchanged and deeply comforting.

Rank 90. Oink & Oscar
American
Every sandwich at this sandwich shop contains pork, which tells you almost everything you need to know. The signature is porkstrami, a brined and smoked pork butt that earns its place alongside coppa, salami, and mortadella in the loaded Salvatore, served hot on a Dutch crunch roll. Turkey and roast beef exist if you insist. Old-timey novelty sodas handle cleanup duty. Bring your appetite and leave your dietary restrictions at the door.
-
Rank 91. Omakase
Edomae Sushi
Fish from Tokyo's Toyosu market, cured and aged using Edomae techniques, is the whole point of this intimate omakase counter, where three chefs handle just twelve seats at a time. The chef adjusts each guest's rice portion and wasabi individually, which sounds fussy until you realize how much it changes things. An old-school sushi bar that takes itself seriously, without taking the fun out of the room.

Rank 92. Robin
Omakase Sushi
Each diner sets a price point on a sliding scale before the meal, and the kitchen builds the omakase around that number. Robin is a contemporary sushi counter where no two menus look quite alike, the team riffing freely across Japanese technique and global flavors: Spanish mackerel with poblano chile oil, king salmon with whipped tofu and Thai basil. It earned a spot on Bon Appétit's Best New Restaurants list and has stayed a fixture on best-sushi roundups ever since.

Rank 93. Le Parc Bistrobar
French
Bruno Chemel ran one of the Peninsula's more ambitious tasting-menu restaurants for years; this is not that. Le Parc Bistrobar, tucked into a hotel near Union Square, is a French bistro and cocktail bar that leans classic, with oxtails braised in red wine until the meat nearly dissolves into the sauce. Christie Chemel's cocktail list runs deep on Chartreuse and Pineau des Charentes, which is either a selling point or a warning depending on your relationship with French liqueurs.
-
Rank 94. Sorella
Northern Italian
The bar runs deep on cicchetti and cocktails if you're just passing through, but Sorella is really a sit-down Northern Italian restaurant with California instincts and house-made pasta that takes the job seriously. It shares DNA with the more formal Acquerello nearby, though the room here trades white tablecloths for something louder and younger. Polk Street regulars fill it fast, so book ahead.

Rank 96. Z & Y
Sichuan
The fish is in there somewhere, buried under a brick-red avalanche of dried chiles you have to ladle aside to find it. This Chinatown Sichuan restaurant is famous for that má-là one-two punch, the numbing tingle of peppercorns chasing the heat of the peppers, and the hour-long wait out front suggests the neighborhood has opinions about it. When Dungeness crab is in season, it arrives stir-fried with salted egg yolk.

Rank 98. Swan Oyster Depot
Seafood
Cash only, no website, a line down Polk Street, and they open at eight in the morning if you'd rather eat crab than sleep. Swan is an old-school seafood counter, marble-topped and tight on stools, where the Dungeness arrives cracked and the raw bar runs to sea urchin when they have it. The noise is mostly shells and sourdough. San Francisco Chronicle calls it a classic for a reason, but the line will convince you faster.

Rank 99. Sons & Daughters
Nordic New American
Wood-paneled walls and an open kitchen that puts the chefs on something like a stage set the scene at this Mission District tasting menu restaurant, where Harrison Cheney runs a Nordic-inflected program on Californian ingredients. Ferments, pickles, and smoked things do a lot of the work alongside hyper-seasonal produce. It holds two Michelin stars and a spot on North America's 50 Best list at number 45.
-
Rank 100. R&G Lounge
Chinese
The dining room holds enough live-seafood tanks that you half expect a guided tour, but R&G Lounge is a Chinatown banquet-style restaurant where the point is the occasion. Dungeness crab fried in salt and pepper, black cod baked to the texture of soft butter, geoduck sliced thin for sashimi. The seafood swims until you order it, which settles the freshness question before it's even asked.
