  1. Corn sourced from small family farms around Mexico gets nixtamalized and ground in-house here, then pressed into tortillas on a comal you can watch from the front of the room. This warm, airy Mexican spot in Tijuana keeps the menu tight: tacos, tostadas, ceviche, egg dishes, and a daily tamal wrapped in banana leaf. The room has tile floors, wood furnishings, and a screen-covered roof. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  2. Rank 202. La 89

    Mexican

Plastic stools, metal tables, and a kitchen that refuses to rush anything, which is not nothing when you're talking carne asada grilled to order. This bright Roma Norte taqueria does birria, tortas, and quesabirria, the last of which holds up fine without the consommé but really wants it. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks. You will stand in line with people who know exactly what they're ordering before they reach the front.

  3. Rank 202. Siembra Tortillería

    Modern Mexican

The black awning covers two storefronts of counter stools facing an open kitchen where a Venezuelan chef who has spent decades in Mexico treats tortilla-making as the main event, selling them by the stack to locals and using them as the foundation for tacos, tlacoyos, and squash blossom quesadillas made to order. This Polanco taqueria holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the corn here is the argument.

  4. Rank 207. Gruta Ehden

    Middle Eastern

  5. Rank 207. Suntory

    Traditional Japanese

  6. Rank 221. Botánico

    Contemporary Mexican

The entrance on Calle Alfonso Reyes gives nothing away, but step inside this contemporary Mexican restaurant and there are tall cacti, a small fish-stocked lake, and the feeling of a courtyard that somehow forgot it was in the middle of the city. The menu moves between aguachile and pasta without apology, and a crème brûlée finished with Kalamata olive is the kind of move that sounds wrong until it isn't. Good for a date, fine for a family, easy for anyone.

  7. Sarape blankets drape the chairs and the handblown glasses have those colorful rims that always make you feel like the meal is already going well. Edith's is a Mexican restaurant in Cabo that ranges across the whole country on one menu, pairing Baja lobster taquitos with moles rooted in Guerrero. The room is festive in a way that earns it, and the cooking follows suit.

  8. RosaNegra is a dinner party disguised as a restaurant, where the servers dance, the tomahawk steaks get a flamethrower, and fire dancers drop by between courses. Expect sparklers, cocktails in skull mugs, and a trout arriving under a smoking glass dome. It's a pricey Latin spot on the Boulevard Kukulkan hotel strip, so dress for a party and bring a card that won't flinch. AAA has given it three diamonds.

  9. The showstopping fountain in the center of the room tells you everything: Toro is a pan-Latin American restaurant that wants to be remembered. Large furniture, a buzzy atmosphere, and a menu that swings from Oaxacan cheese-smothered enchiladas to grilled cauliflower in pomegranate and red wine reduction. It's the kind of place where both the carnivores and the vegetarians leave satisfied, which is harder to pull off than the fountain makes it look.

  10. The terrace fills early with couples and the kind of people who dress like they read Italian Vogue, making Sartoria feel more Milan than Roma Norte. It's a neighborhood osteria at heart, with an industrial-chic interior and a focused menu that runs from antipasti through pasta to secondi. The kitchen takes presentation seriously, and the tiramisu is the kind that makes you question every other version you've had.

  11. Rank 227. Arturo's Restaurant

    Classic French

  12. Rank 227. Bruna

    Fusion Mexican

Black-and-white parquet floors beneath an art gallery roof set the mood at Bruna, a Mexican-fusion restaurant in Guadalajara's Lafayette neighborhood where the decor is flamboyant and the tables are hard to get. The chef pulls from street food stalls and family recipes, running much of it through a wood-fired grill. Habanero ice cream with cactus jelly for dessert is the kind of move that earns a spot on Mexico's Best 100 Restaurants list.

  20. Rank 266. Coyul

    Mexican

The dining room at this Four Seasons Tamarindo restaurant sits on artificially built clifftops above a run of infinity pools, with the Pacific spreading out beyond. The menu, shaped in collaboration with Elena Reygadas, pulls local Mexican ingredients through French and Italian technique. Order something, then spend most of dinner watching the horizon do its thing.

  22. Rank 273. La Casa de Las Mayoras

    Vegetarian Mexican

A vegetarian breakfast spot in downtown Cancún where the tortillas are hand-pressed and the salsas are seasoned with evident purpose. Chilaquiles, quesadillas, and tostadas anchor the menu, with fruit batidos on hand if the heat gets serious. The room has the warmth of a family kitchen rather than a health-food statement. On good days, Guato, a chihuahua-beagle mix of considerable local renown, holds court on the premises.

  23. Rank 273. NÜ Tulum

    Mexican

Open-air tables tucked into the jungle off Tulum's beach strip, where every neighbor is also doing jungle-chic and the competition is stiff. This Mexican restaurant pulls ingredients from a regenerative Yucatan farm, and vegetables carry real weight on the menu, showing up stuffed, braised, or spiced in ways that make the meat dishes feel like supporting cast. The Michelin Guide has it on their selected list, which among this crowd is saying something.

  24. Rank 275. Margarita

    Mexican

  25. Rank 275. Taverna

    Mediterranean

A candlelit Mediterranean tavern in a restored townhouse that spent decades in inheritance limbo before anyone thought to fix it up. The result is all greenery, vintage details, and mismatched elegance, the kind of room that makes whatever you're eating taste better. Fire-cooked fish and roasted vegetables anchor the menu, but cozy lounges and aged Negronis suggest nobody is in a hurry. Bring someone you want to impress.

  29. Rank 281. BAJEL

    Contemporary Mexican

Inside the Sofitel on Reforma, Bajel runs two tasting menus of contemporary Mexican cooking inside a room where the open kitchen is very much part of the show. The French hotel might greet you with a bonsoir, but the menu corrects course immediately. A white mole made from 25 ingredients arrives with a card listing all of them, which is either endearing or a lot, depending on your mood.

  30. Rank 281. Baldío

    Mexican

The menus print on paper made from recycled corn husks, which tells you everything about where this zero-waste Mexican restaurant's head is at. Inspired by London's Silo, the chef runs a tasting menu (or à la carte) built around chinampa vegetables and freshwater fish, with in-house water purification rounding out the commitment. The cooking is precise enough that the philosophy never feels like the main course.

  31. The line down the block is the sign, and it moves fast enough that no one's complaining. This cash-only taqueria in Tránsito runs on generous portions and low prices, with carnitas piled high on doubled-up corn tortillas doing most of the talking. The bone-in beef rib taco is quietly worth the detour too. The Michelin Guide has it selected, which explains why the regulars share the line with everyone else.

  32. Rank 281. Lorea

    Mexican

The name is the Basque word for flower, which sets the tone for a fine dining room in Roma Norte where a single seasonal tasting menu drifts from Mexican roots toward wherever the chef's curiosity leads. Multi-level, wood-tabled, and quiet enough to hear yourself think, with the chef's counter as the obvious place to sit. The kitchen runs clean and calm, and the menu changes enough that regulars keep showing up.

  33. Rank 281. ORYX

    Contemporary Mexican

Ruffo Ibarra's contemporary Mexican restaurant sits along Agua Caliente in a room that pairs exposed red brick and metal beams with warm lighting, landing somewhere between industrial and genuinely comfortable. The menu runs from chilled seafood starters through grilled steaks, and the kitchen has a fondness for tableside moments, pouring hot shrimp broth over raw consomé at your table. A Michelin Selected restaurant in Tijuana.

  34. The red trompo of adobada spinning at the center of this taquería is less a cooking apparatus and more a landmark. The Valadez family has been running the place for decades, and on any given night it is probably Tijuana's busiest, with carne asada going over mesquite and suadero, tongue, and chitterlings frying in their own fat on the comal. Orders come dressed fast with onion, cilantro, guacamole, and salsa.

  35. Rank 287. Nao

    Mediterranean

Whitewashed brick and splashes of blue set the scene before you've seen a single menu. This is a Mediterranean restaurant in downtown San José del Cabo where the chef makes everything in house, from the pasta to the gelato, which in Los Cabos is less common than it sounds. The room runs with a level of polish that surprises people expecting a casual beach-town dinner. A Michelin Selected Restaurant.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
