The Best Cambodian Food in the United States

The best Cambodian food in the United States, according to the experts: The New York Times, Eater, and the Michelin Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Bong comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Chicago and Jacksonville.

More Less

Shlap Muan and Foo Dog Curry Traders hold the next two places. Eater and The Infatuation show up on more of this list than any other guide.

  1. Rank 1. Bong

    Khmer Cambodian

Reservations at this tiny Crown Heights Cambodian restaurant evaporate fast enough that "arrive early and hope" is a legitimate strategy. Shared plates and a high-energy counter setup make it better with four than two. A James Beard semifinalist for Best New Restaurant, it pulls off the thing where every dish on the table disappears before anyone meant it to.

  2. Rank 3. Foo Dog Curry Traders

    Cambodian Food Truck

Foo Dog Curry Traders runs on a build-your-own formula: pick a curry, a starch, and a protein, and lunch is handled. It's mostly a takeout counter, though there are tables if you've been flipping through crates at Tiger Records or caffeinating at Bold Bean nearby. The Canada, a poutine-style heap of fries under buttery tomato curry, is a hangover remedy that never claims to be health food. Vegan popcorn chicken is also on offer.

  3. Rank 3. Hermosa

    Creative Cambodian Sandwich Shop

From the street, Hermosa looks like the hot dog and beef stand you grew up near, which is the joke, because inside it's a Cambodian sandwich shop with a fried chicken sandwich that has opinions. At night it quietly becomes a dinner tasting, where a group of up to 14 can take over the whole room for an 11-course BYOB spread. It's casual and counter-service, so dress for sandwiches, and bring the wine.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
