The Best French Food in the United States

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best French food in the United States, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, the Forbes Travel Guide, and AAA have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Atelier Crenn comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in New York.

More Less

Oriole and The French Laundry hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with AAA next.

Eat, change section
  1. The menu arrives as a poem, literally, and the meal that follows is Dominique Crenn's three-Michelin-star argument that fine dining and a pescatarian kitchen are not in tension. The eight-table room in Cow Hollow is filled with her father's artwork and family photos, and the tasting menu works through seafood and produce with French technique and a modernist's sense of play. Forbes Five Star as well, if you needed the coordinates.

  2. You arrive through a converted freight elevator in what used to be a warehouse, which sets the tone before you've touched a menu. Oriole is a tasting-menu restaurant where the chef blends French and Japanese ideas into something that reads as neither, with polished service that somehow avoids feeling stiff. It holds two Michelin stars and a James Beard Award, and the room earns both the ceiling collage and the hushed reverence of everyone in it.

  3. Thomas Keller's fine dining landmark in Yountville, where the ceiling lines and counter heights are as considered as what lands on the plate. The menu moves through classic French technique with California produce, tasting-course style, in a room that takes the whole thing very seriously. Three Michelin stars, Forbes Five Star, and AAA Five Diamonds. Getting a reservation is its own project, which tells you something.

  4. The dining room looks out over Central Park and is quiet enough that you can actually hear your table talk, which at these prices seems like the least they could do. Thomas Keller's tasting menu restaurant holds three Michelin stars, a Forbes Five Star, and an AAA Five Diamond, and the kitchen earns them through classical French technique that shifts with the seasons. Service is warm without being stiff, which takes more skill than the food does.

  5. A chariot of mignardise rolled tableside signals the close of dinner at this two-Michelin-star French contemporary room inside the MGM Grand, which trades casino noise for aubergine velvet, gilded accents, and deep carpet underfoot. The cooking runs through contemporary French with global detours, the wine list holds a Wine Enthusiast Hall of Fame nod, and the AAA Five Diamond sits quietly on the wall. Dress accordingly, and clear the evening.

  6. Rank 6. Gabriel Kreuther

    Alsatian Bistro

The cheese trolley rolls through the dining room with the gravity of a state occasion, which tells you everything about the register of this Alsatian French fine dining room at the base of the Grace Building near Bryant Park. Gabriel Kreuther holds two Michelin stars, a Forbes Five Star, and AAA Five Diamonds. The chef's French technique has an Alsatian core, the banquettes are cream, the servers are impeccably suited, and the Alsatian wine list is no afterthought.

  7. Jean-Georges Vongerichten has been running this French tasting room at the Trump International for close to three decades, and the kitchen still moves like it has something to prove. By day, floor-to-ceiling windows flood the room with Central Park light; by night, a chandelier of jellyfish-shade globes goes soft and dreamlike. The mignardises cart arrives at the end with an almost ceremonial air. Two Michelin stars, a Forbes Five Star, and AAA Five Diamonds.

  8. Its own valet entrance off the Augustus Tower means you never have to walk through a casino to get here, which tells you something about how seriously this French fine dining room takes itself. Guy Savoy holds a Forbes Five Star and AAA Five Diamonds, and the tasting menu reads like a greatest-hits of the Paris original: artichoke and black truffle soup, seared foie gras, oyster. Romantic, modern, not remotely stuffy.

  9. Porcelain chandeliers from Bernardaud hang over coffered ceilings alongside James Rosenquist canvases, which tells you something about how seriously Daniel Boulud's Upper East Side flagship takes the room. This is classic New York fine dining, the kind where deals get brokered and anniversaries get marked. The multicourse French tasting menus hold a Michelin star, a Forbes Five Star, and an AAA Five Diamond.

  10. The counter wraps the open kitchen in red and black, so you're essentially eating at the pass, watching every plate come together. This is Joël Robuchon's casual-ish fine dining concept inside the MGM Grand, a Michelin-starred French tasting menu room where the pommes purée alone has a kind of cult following. The tasting menu is the move; à la carte exists, but feels like skipping the point.

  11. Lipstick-red banquettes, dark wood, and linen-draped tables so close together that you'll know your neighbor's business by dessert. This old-school Upper East Side bistro ran for decades, went dark, and came roaring back under the chefs behind Balthazar, this time with a prix-fixe menu of reverent French classics. It landed on North America's 50 Best Restaurants and took a James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur in 2025. The frogs' legs got a shout from the Times.

  12. A tasting counter tucked into the back of a Hell's Kitchen grocery store, which is either the most New York thing imaginable or a deliberate joke on fine dining's self-seriousness. Guests wrap around a glossy walnut counter while a full brigade cooks inches away with nowhere to hide. The kitchen sends out precise, delicate bites in quick succession. Two Michelin stars and an AAA Five Diamond award.

  13. Rank 13. Bresca

    Contemporary Bistro

A moss wall and a foie gras "negroni" topped with Campari gelée tell you pretty quickly that this is not a low-key bistro. Ryan Ratino's contemporary New American spot on 14th Street holds a Michelin star and earns it with cooking that is quietly surreal without being smug about it. The room is warm enough that you forget you're at a special-occasion restaurant until the check arrives.

  14. The counter wraps around an open kitchen in the Miami outpost of Joël Robuchon's global fine dining brand, which holds two Michelin stars and brings the full Paris treatment, rosewood walls, leather chairs, tasting menus, to the Design District. The kitchen leans on Robuchon's classics while gesturing toward local flavors. This is special-occasion territory, dressed and priced accordingly, with the kind of service that makes you feel the bill was entirely your idea.

  15. Satin drapes the ceiling in tent-like folds while the Bellagio fountains do their thing just beyond the window, which is either very Las Vegas or very perfect, depending on your mood. Le Cirque is classic French fine dining, the kind where tasting menus arrive in careful courses and the room does half the work. It holds both a Forbes Five Star and an AAA Five Diamond, a combination that keeps the service on its toes.

  16. The terrace overlooks what feels like the entire valley, vines rolling out below you in every direction, which gives a fine dining tasting menu a certain gravitational pull. Chef Robert Curry has been steering this Michelin-starred Napa institution for long enough that the Californian cooking feels like a natural extension of the landscape. Wine Enthusiast put it in their Restaurant Hall of Fame, which tells you something about the list.

  17. Rank 17. Le Pavillon

    Contemporary French

A blown-glass chandelier hangs over the bar at this contemporary French fine dining room tucked into one of Midtown's newer towers, and the soaring ceilings and warm tones make the room feel less corporate than the address suggests. Daniel Boulud and his team steer the menu toward seafood and vegetables with global touches throughout. The whole thing holds a Michelin star, which fits the quietly serious crowd that fills it on a weeknight.

  18. The menu cites lumberjacks as inspiration, which sounds like a joke until the food arrives smelling of juniper and pickled elderberries. This is a French American neighborhood restaurant on Nicollet, where the chef works a distinctly Upper Midwestern palate, finding fall vegetables worthy of a special occasion without making the room feel like one. It won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant and landed on the New York Times Restaurant List. The pommes dauphine are, regulars will tell you, really just very good Tater Tots.

  19. A polished Art Deco dining room on a prime Upper East Side corner sets the register at Café Boulud: linen-and-crystal fine dining, the kind where the service anticipates rather than intrudes. The kitchen, which holds a Michelin star, works from classical French foundations and bends toward seasonal and global ideas without losing the thread. The wine list leans French and the tarte Tatin arrives as though it had something to prove.

  20. Rank 20. Ômo by Jônt

    Japanese-inflected French

Classic French technique run through a Japanese sensibility, with a few Florida ingredients slipped in quietly, is the organizing idea at this fine dining tasting menu restaurant in Winter Park. Chef Ryan Ratino's D.C. flagship, Jônt, is the spiritual blueprint, and the Michelin star followed. Three tasting menus scale from edited to full luxury, so the room draws both the occasion crowd and the regulars who already know which one to pick.

  21. Rank 21. Essential By Christophe

    Contemporary French

Heavy iron doors open into a slim townhouse base on the Upper West Side, where the room runs to supple leather, brass, and layered shades of beige without tipping into stuffiness. This is contemporary French fine dining, and chef Christophe Bellanca brings the technique without the formality, folding in Asian influences, genmaicha and turmeric among them, in ways that feel deliberate rather than fashionable. The restaurant holds a Michelin star.

  22. Sitting inside the Museum of Fine Arts, this French fine dining room earns its Michelin star on the strength of produce-driven cooking where the sauces do the heavy lifting and the plating looks borrowed from the galleries next door. The Cullen Sculpture Garden frames the windows after dark. The tasting menu shifts with the seasons, and the pommes dauphine with truffle aioli have no business being a side dish.

  23. The cheese trolley alone could stop traffic, and at Gary Danko it arrives with the gravity of a state visit. This is old-school prix-fixe fine dining near Fisherman's Wharf, the kind where servers wear dark suits and the wine list requires a commitment. Three to five courses, ample choices at each turn, or hand it all to the kitchen. An AAA Five Diamond, and on Wine Enthusiast's Wine Restaurant Hall of Fame, if that helps justify the occasion.

  24. A French bistro in a small Central Coast wine town, Bell's runs on a tight three-choices-per-course format that keeps the kitchen focused and the meal moving. Nearly everything on the plate was grown or raised within a short drive, which sounds like a bumper sticker until you taste it. The chef holds a Michelin star and a James Beard nomination, and the cooking earns both without fussing about it.

  25. The bookshelves and well-worn wood make My Loup feel less like a supper club and more like someone's very good dinner party. The French-leaning menu reads casual but cooks with real intent, seasonal and confidently seasoned, the kind of food where the chef is clearly enjoying themselves. The bar is no afterthought either, named among Punch's best new bartenders. The New York Times and Bon Appétit both took notice, and it's easy to see why.

  26. A chalkboard outside suggests a Champagne breakfast, and inside this little bungalow on the St. Mary's strip, that feels like the most sensible advice you'll get all week. Cullum's Attaboy is a walk-in, counter-service brunch spot doing affordable French luxury, think proper omelets, hollandaise, and caviar appearing with suspicious regularity. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and a James Beard nomination followed.

  27. Hardwood floors, brick walls, and a full bar make Scoundrel feel like the French bistro Greenville didn't know it needed. The chef's food is classic in frame but restless in execution, the kind of place where a Caesar salad shows up better than expected and a roasted chicken arrives with gnocchi Parisienne and mustard sauce just to make its point. It holds a Michelin star, and bar seats fill as fast as tables. Book ahead.

  28. Rank 28. Jeune et Jolie

    Californian French

The room is dressed in shades of rose and flooded with natural light, which sets the tone before you've looked at a single menu. This is a nouvelle French fine dining spot in Carlsbad, where the wide-open kitchen turns out a prix fixe that most regulars default to, though the bar suits a shorter visit. The cocktail program holds its own, and The New York Times flagged the desserts. It holds a Michelin star.

  29. Rank 29. Bridges

    Globally inspired Bistro

Sam Lawrence's New American restaurant sits in Chinatown with amber lighting warm enough to make you forget how cold it is outside. The menu is spare on words and refuses to be pinned to a single tradition, which sounds like a hedge but plays out as confidence. Michelin has given it a star. The room has bistro ease, the kitchen has genuine ambition, and somehow that combination holds.

  30. Rank 30. Raf's

    French-Italian

The house-made bread arrives before you've settled in, and that sets the tone. Raf's is a modern French bistro on Elizabeth Street with enough Italian soul to keep things interesting, the kind of room that feels like it's been around forever even when it hasn't. Pastry Chef Camari Mick is a James Beard semifinalist, and the desserts make that plausible. Walk-ins can usually find a spot at the bar, which is honestly not a bad outcome.

  31. The open kitchen glows at the center of the room like the whole thing was staged, which it sort of was, by Daniel Rose. This is a proper French fine dining restaurant, unapologetically so, with a Michelin star and a menu that runs to quenelles and sweetbreads without a trace of irony. The crowd is worth watching but so is the food, which is classical enough to feel like a lesson and personal enough to feel alive.

  32. The gilded accents and cherry-red booths at this TriBeCa brasserie give it the feel of a Dionysian feast that's been running for decades, even though it hasn't. Riad Nasr and Lee Hanson run the kitchen, and the room they've built pulls a crowd that treats a Tuesday like a Saturday. 33. Rank 33. Coquine Restaurant

A neighborhood restaurant on SE Belmont where French technique quietly does the heavy lifting behind food that reads as pure Pacific Northwest. The chef has cooked in Michelin-starred kitchens, and you can feel it in the restraint, the seasoning is always doing something interesting without announcing itself. A 2025 James Beard nominee for Outstanding Restaurant, and a semifinalist for its wine and beverages program. Bring time; this is a sit-and-linger kind of room.

  36. This is a French fine dining room on the 11th floor of a half-size Eiffel Tower, which means you eat duck confit while the Bellagio fountains do their thing below. 37. Rank 37. Mamani

    Contemporary French

The chef behind this Contemporary French bistro spent nearly a decade running the kitchen at Restaurant Joël Robuchon in Vegas, and the sauces here will remind you why that matters. Mamani holds a Michelin star, and the room is glitzy enough to justify the à la carte prices. The menu skews shareable and French-classical: Dover sole, a veal Cordon Bleu, a Paris-Brest that arrives looking like it was sent from Paris to make a point.

  38. Rank 38. Claud

    French

A few steps below street level on East Tenth, this French-inflected New American restaurant runs on shared plates and an open kitchen that keeps the room honest. The cooking touches the familiar at a slant: grilled cabbage, tempura squash blossoms, and a six-layer chocolate cake soaked in vermouth and evaporated milk that nominally serves two. The New York Times placed it fifteenth on its list of the city's hundred best. Reservations are a project, but the bar absorbs the overflow gracefully.

  39. Rank 39. Camille

    Vietnamese-French

A multicourse tasting menu built around Vietnamese French cooking, where northern-style pho arrives as wagyu tartare in a savory broth alongside a doughnut pastry. Chef Tung Phan's Lake Baldwin fine dining room is boldly sleek, all wood accents and considered lighting, with counter seats for the full experience and booths for a shorter one. It holds a Michelin star, which makes sense once dessert channels a cheese course through red bean cake and strawberry sansho sauce.

  40. Rank 40. Mélisse

    Modern French

You enter through a discreet side door, which sets the tone for Josiah Citrin's long-running Santa Monica tasting menu. Inside, the room feels like a velvet underground with good silverware, and the French decadence runs toward the gratuitous side, which is the point. Tableside saucing, antique silver press, dry-aged duck, truffles on everything. Two Michelin stars.

  41. The limestone facade on Broadway gives way to ash wood, mosaic tile, and a wide-open kitchen that runs the whole show. This is a French brasserie with a Michelin star, the kind of place where the duck arrives whole before someone carves it tableside. Williamsburg's dressed-up crowd fills the generously spaced tables, and nobody looks out of place in either a blazer or a good jacket.

  42. A tasting menu restaurant tucked into the third floor of a La Jolla shopping plaza, which sounds unlikely until the food arrives. Chef Elijah Arizmendi trained in New York before coming home to cook California ingredients through French and Japanese lenses, earning a Michelin star in the process. The menu moves from intricate canapes through pristine local fish and poultry, with a live-fire hearth doing quiet work in the background.

  43. Art Deco bones, dim light, and a bar up front that moves at a convincing clip: Le Rock is a proper French brasserie tucked into the ground floor of Rockefeller Center. The team behind Frenchette runs it, and a James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur followed. Seafood platters, duck confit, classic sauces, and profiteroles in buckwheat honey fudge cover the expected ground, with a little tableside theater to keep things lively.

  44. Pressed-tin ceiling, exposed brick, wine bottles lining the shelves above your head: this Georgetown neo-bistro looks exactly like the French place you've been trying to find in this city. 45. The name means "simmered," which tells you something about the chef's approach: unhurried, precise, nothing showing off. This is a casual French prix-fixe counter in the Mission, built around a weekly four-course menu that follows Northern California's seasons and a natural wine list that would feel at home in a Paris cave. The chef trained in France via Japan, and the room, all warm wood and open kitchen, has the nerve to be unpretentious about it. A James Beard nominee.

  46. Rank 46. Verzênay

    French Patisserie

Verzênay is a Lincoln Park patisserie where the French classics arrive in textbook form: chocolate eclairs, crackly kouign-amann, a sourdough baguette that's often still warm. It also keeps an apple pie and a mango passionfruit cheesecake in the case, which the French would presumably allow. The Chicago macaron, filled with caramel, popcorn, and cheddar, is a Garrett Popcorn tribute in cookie form. Saturday mornings call for an early alarm.

  47. Rank 47. Spoon and Stable

    Modern French

The building was a working stable once, and the vaulted ceilings and warm brick still carry that memory into what is now one of Minneapolis's most celebrated dinner destinations. Chef Gavin Kaysen runs a Midwestern French kitchen where the seasonal sourcing is taken seriously without being announced at you. A 2025 James Beard Outstanding Restaurant semifinalist, it draws a dressed-up but not stiff crowd happy to linger over heritage grain pasta and a very good cocktail.

Service begins with the lights dropping and curtains parting to reveal the full kitchen brigade standing at attention, which sets the tone for what follows. This is a tasting menu restaurant in Greenpoint where the chef's classic French training and Japanese background meet in a warehouse-scale dining room. 51. Rank 52. Le Pigeon

    Modern French

The foie gras profiteroles have been on the dessert menu so long they've become a Portland landmark in their own right. Gabriel Rucker's modern French tasting spot on East Burnside has been doing ambitious, slightly unhinged prix fixe since forever, the kind of cooking where sturgeon pastrami with caviar shows up next to a vegetarian finger sandwich and both feel inevitable. A James Beard semifinalist, and still the room where Portland chefs go to be impressed.

  52. Rank 53. Merci

    Lowcountry Bistro

The dining room, tucked into a 19th-century building with an interior by Helen Rice, has the feel of a very elegant private residence where you happened to get a table. It's a European-leaning seasonal restaurant, the kind where the pasta is made with care and the slow-cooked chicken tastes like someone started it two days ago. A James Beard nominee for Best New Restaurant, and coveted enough that regulars wear their reservations with quiet pride.

  53. An oxblood lacquered ceiling and a menu displayed on a glowing marquee running the length of the room set the scene at this French wine bar across from the Transamerica Pyramid. The kitchen leans on peak produce and serious seafood, with the wine list thick with under-the-radar Gallic producers. The New York Times named it to their Restaurant List in 2025. Walk-ins compete for counter seats; reservations go fast either way.

  54. Velvet booths, Christofle cutlery, and a marble bar set the tone at this French tasting menu restaurant on a coveted TriBeCa corner. The chef spent years in Joël Robuchon kitchens, and the cooking shows it: classical French technique pulled toward Japanese sensibility, refined without the stiffness that usually tags along. Servers in fitted suits orbit the room with something close to telepathy. One Michelin star.

  55. Tucked into Miami's Design District among the fashion boutiques, this French fine dining room holds a Michelin star and reads exactly like its neighborhood: sleek, considered, and a little pleased with itself in the best way. The seasonal menu leans light for the category, big flavors without the weight that usually comes with a three-hour dinner. The vegetable-forward cooking is the point here, not a concession to it.

  56. Caviar arrives on mother-of-pearl spoons, and the potato gets the Robuchon purée treatment, which tells you exactly where you are: a polished French restaurant in an era when that's a rarer breed than it once was. The kitchen still bakes madeleines to order, and for a modest surcharge a waiter will shower Périgord truffles on whatever you're eating. The New York Times named it among Chicago's 25 best restaurants. Dress accordingly.

  57. A Michelin-starred French fine dining room on the third floor of South Coast Plaza, which sounds like a punchline until you're actually sitting at the chef's counter watching a pristine kitchen run through a prix fixe that manages to feel personal rather than ceremonial. Tony Esnault's cooking leans classic French with a roaming curiosity. The patio is a quiet bonus, and the whole place moves at a pace that makes a mall feel very far away.

  60. The foie gras Monte Cristo at brunch should tell you where this is headed. Obélix is a white-tablecloth French bistro in River North where duck, foie gras, and pâté en croûte run through a menu of hearty classics, all made in-house. The sun-drenched dining room fills with seafood platters and bottles of wine at a pace that suggests nobody here came to be sensible. Save room: the pastries alone make a case for staying through dessert.

  61. Red leather banquettes, white tablecloths, a snappy U-shaped bar, and a shiny open kitchen pack into fifty seats on Dickerson Pike. This is a French-leaning dinner spot where smoke drifts in from a Basque-style wood-fire hearth and the wine list has Brooklyn credentials. Philip Krajeck's third Nashville restaurant has landed on the New York Times' list of Nashville's 25 best, which for a room this quietly romantic feels about right.

  62. Rank 63. Citrin

    Seasonal French

Citrin sits in the same building as the tasting-menu-only Mélisse, but it offers a more flexible format, with prix-fixe and à la carte alongside each other. The kitchen runs on French technique and California produce, classical at the bone but with modern, global instincts. Caviar and truffle upgrades are available for the inclined, though the cooking holds its own without them. It holds a Michelin star.

  63. A converted farmhouse in North Salem with sweeping views of actual countryside, which somehow makes the tasting menu feel earned rather than theatrical. This is a Michelin-starred modern French fine dining room with very few tables, run by a husband-and-wife team whose roots are in the south of France. The cooking is precise and quietly confident, and dessert gets its own moment to shine. Esquire named the Vesper martini among the finest in America, which is a strange fact about a farmhouse, and a good one.

  64. A marble bar, duck fat fries, and oysters on the half shell make a strong case for showing up before dinner even starts. Elvie's is a French-leaning bistro that moves easily from morning pastries through a cheery lunch to a more polished evening service. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, the New York Times put it on their Restaurant List, and a James Beard nomination followed. Jackson, Mississippi, apparently has thoughts about French food.

  65. Rank 66. Bouchon

    Classic French

Blue velvet banquettes, wood-paneled columns, and vintage frescoes sit just off a casino floor that couldn't be further from Paris, which is exactly the joke Thomas Keller seems happy to lean into. Bouchon is a classic French brasserie where the staff wear bow ties and the cooking runs to escargots and crème brûlée done with care. The room transports; the slot machines do not.

  66. Rank 69. Marché Moderne

    Modern French

A fire engine-red Berkel slicer sits in open view of the dining room, which tells you something about how seriously this fine dining French restaurant takes its charcuterie. Husband-and-wife team Florent and Amelia Marneau run a kitchen that moves between classical and modern French without making a fuss about it. The glassed-in kitchen and soft globe lighting keep things elegant without going stiff. The cocktail list tracks the seasons, and the wine pairings are unusually fairly priced.

  67. Midnight-blue walls, gold accents, and a Persian rug that has no business being this plush set the mood at Apéro, a French restaurant on P Street where champagne and caviar are essentially the whole thesis. The back garden is the kind of spot people pretend to stumble upon. The menu fills out with French classics for anyone who needs an excuse beyond caviar, which, to be fair, is most of us.

  68. Rank 72. Off Alley

    Lyonnaise Bouchon

Twelve seats in a brick corridor, a chalkboard that changes daily, and a chef who treats gooseneck barnacles as a reasonable Tuesday ingredient. Off Alley is an intimate Pacific Northwest tasting spot where foie gras might end up as ice cream and snails arrive on sourdough with bone marrow butter, though the stranger touches tend to punctuate dishes that are, underneath it all, quietly seasonal and elegant. The New York Times put it on their restaurant list, and the staff describe every plate like they can't quite believe it either.

  69. Wood-paneled walls and brass fixtures in Las Vegas's Chinatown, well off the Strip's theatrical gravitational pull. Partage is a modern French tasting restaurant where the chef's intentions are on the plate and the room quietly asks you to pay attention. The menu has loosened from pure tasting format to include à la carte, which locals have taken as an invitation to become regulars. A 2026 James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef Southwest.

  71. Dave Beran's Santa Monica bistro leans hard into France with no apologies and no asterisks. Wood beams, exposed brick, and white kitchen tile set the scene, and the pressed duck for two is the kind of centerpiece that makes the table next to you lean over and ask what you ordered. The marble bar handles a more casual drop-in just fine, with Champagne and caviar if you're feeling it. A New York Times pick for the city's best.

  72. Concrete floors and dark leather in a South Austin building that could pass for a tech lobby, except the menu is French and the martinis have made a small national name for themselves. Le Calamar is a neighborhood bistro where the food leans sharing plates, the wine list sneaks in some Texas pours, and the baked Alaska arrives with honey pecan dacquoise and torched meringue like it has something to prove.

  73. Rank 77. Café Carmellini

    Italian-French

Sapphire-blue velvet booths, caramel leather, wood floors, and a chandelier situation that would make a Gilded Age banker feel underdressed: Andrew Carmellini's fine dining room inside the Fifth Avenue Hotel is maximalist and means it. The kitchen leans Mediterranean-Italian, with dishes that have a way of arriving as formal little compositions. 77. A century-old ranch house just outside Beaver Creek Resort, and the chef's family actually lives there, which goes a long way toward explaining why this French fine dining room feels less like a white-tablecloth performance and more like someone's very well-fed home. The European-trained kitchen leans into generous portions and old-school indulgences, with a dessert course the menu treats as non-negotiable. Dress up a little; the room earns it.

  78. Rank 83. Caviar Russe

    Contemporary French

A marble staircase leads to this fine dining jewel box above Madison Avenue, where the whole point is caviar and the menu makes no apologies about it. Tins range from a modest Pacific Sturgeon scoop to Osetra by the 500 gram, priced accordingly. 79. The kitchen garden outside supplies much of what lands on the table at this elegant tasting and à la carte restaurant inside Bernardus Lodge, and the kitchen treats it as a point of pride rather than a talking point. Low-lit dining room, white tablecloths, a bar packed with people eating full meals, and a line forming outside before the door even opens. FIG is a neighborhood bistro running French technique through a Lowcountry pantry, and locals have been steering visitors here for years. The kitchen leans hard into seafood, working whatever the coast gives them that season. The ricotta gnocchi has its own quiet following on the appetizer menu.

  81. Rank 87. Camaraderie

    American-French

The salt-baked celery root arrives looking like a small geological event, which sets the tone for this French-influenced New American restaurant where technique is the point but the vibe stays loose. Chef Shawn Gawle, a James Beard semifinalist, built the menu around sharing, with tarte flambée, heirloom tomato pie, and carrot cavatelli doing the heavy lifting. Dressy enough to feel like an occasion, relaxed enough that nobody's whispering.

  82. Sunflower yellow walls and tall windows that pull in light from every direction set the tone at this French bistro inside Hotel Saint Augustine. Chef Aaron Bludorn's menu leans into Gulf Coast flavors alongside the classics, so foie gras arrives with biscuits and crawfish sausage gets a Creole sauce. Breakfast runs all week, the patio is spacious, and the servers seem to understand that ease is its own kind of luxury.

  83. The checkered tile floors and art-lined stone walls make it look like a Parisian bistro that wandered into the West Loop and decided to stay. Creepies is a neighborhood French restaurant from the team behind Elske next door, with a concise menu that leans classic and slides Midwestern where it can. The vesper martini landed on Esquire's list of the best in the country, which is not nothing for a place called Creepies.

  84. Rank 90. Chez Panisse

    Californian French

Alice Waters put her name on California cooking before it was a category, and the wood-burning oven at the back of this Craftsman dining room has been the argument ever since. Downstairs runs a four-course fixed menu that changes daily with whatever is at peak season; the upstairs café goes à la carte at friendlier prices. No two visits are the same, which is either a feature or a mild anxiety depending on your personality.

  85. Rank 91. 1789

    American-French

A Federal-period Georgetown townhouse carved into six dining rooms across three floors, each one feeling like it belongs to a different century of the same family. This is the fine dining room where Georgetown parents take their kids to celebrate things, and the veteran servers have clearly done this long enough to find the whole ritual quietly amusing. The French-influenced New American kitchen runs on classic instincts, and holds a AAA Four Diamond rating.

  86. The olive-green velvet and marble floors aren't decorating choices so much as a thesis statement: this is a French fine-dining room where the vegetables are the point and the fish and meat play supporting roles. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
