The Best Thai Food in the United States

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best Thai food in the United States, according to the experts: the James Beard Awards, The 50, and Food & Wine have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Kalaya comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in New York and San Francisco.

More Less

Langbaan and Lom Wong hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with AAA next.

  1. Rank 1. Kalaya

    Southern Thai

A skylit Fishtown warehouse with pistachio-green bar, rattan furniture, and colossal potted palms sets the scene for chef Nok Suntaranon's Southern Thai restaurant, a James Beard Outstanding Restaurant winner. The food makes a case that Thai cuisine belongs nowhere near a takeaway box: bird-shaped dumplings hide caramelized cod, and the tamarind-glazed pork chop has genuine chophouse swagger. Reservations are hard to get even after the place quintupled in size.

  2. Tucked into a 30-seat room inside Phuket Cafe, Langbaan runs themed multi-course Thai dinners built around a specific region or historical period, a different framework each seating. The menu says five courses; chef Earl Nissom sends out more than twelve. It took the James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurant in 2024. The sommelier is often on the floor to talk through the wine pairings, which, given the food, is a conversation worth having.

  3. A black bungalow in downtown Phoenix that turns out northern Thai food rooted in Chiang Rai, where the chef grew up cooking alongside her mother and grandmother. The menu is built to share, the flavors run deep, and the cocktails are doing interesting things with fish sauce and fresh coconut cream. Yotaka Martin took the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest in 2025, which in Phoenix is basically a neighborhood fact at this point.

  4. Exposed pipes, factory windows, and earthy ceramics inside Hotel Kabuki set a mood that Thai restaurants rarely bother with. Nari holds a Michelin star for chef Pim Techamuanvivit's California-ingredient-driven cooking, which runs through a sharply contemporary Thai lens. The family-style menu changes with the seasons, so the squid, the curries, and the banana leaf parcels shift, but the kitchen's intensity doesn't. If you can't get a table, the upstairs bar takes walk-ins.

  5. Thai Taco Tuesdays draw lines around the block at this family-run Sherman Oaks restaurant, where a second-generation chef holds a James Beard Award and runs a monthly omakase that books out before most people know it's open. The rest of the week it's classic Thai with a wine list that gets written about on its own terms. Warm, buzzy, and very Los Angeles in the best sense, which is to say it's completely unpretentious about being excellent.

  6. Rank 6. Vinai

    Hmong Thai

Named for the Thai refugee camp where chef Yia Vang was born, Vinai is a Hmong restaurant that brings a cuisine most Minneapolis diners have never properly encountered. The menu runs from Hill Tribe chicken to grilled lamb heart, and the hot sauces come from family recipes. The New York Times put it on their Restaurant List, and Bon Appétit named it among America's best new restaurants. Every dish has a story, and Vang is usually around to tell it.

  7. Thai hip-hop overhead and papaya salad that bites back even on medium spice sets the tone fast at this street food restaurant from James Beard Award-winning chef Benchawan Jabthong Painter. The menu pulls from across Thailand rather than settling into one region, so the pad see ew and house curries share the table with Northern Thai dishes her grandmother used to make. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  8. A separate menu devoted entirely to Northern Thailand, with dishes that lean toward Myanmar, Laos, and South China, is the thing that separates this Thai restaurant from every other Thai restaurant in Las Vegas. The room is a casino-scale take on temple architecture, all red brick and paper lanterns, but the cooking predates the glamour by a long stretch and has never chased it. Wine Enthusiast put it in their Restaurant Hall of Fame, which tracks.

  9. The name means "far from home," which tells you something about what the chef is doing here. This central Phoenix Thai restaurant draws on Bangkok street food and the cooking of the Isan region, with a tight menu of small plates, noodles, and skewers that reads like a personal dispatch rather than a crowd-pleasing survey. The cocktail program is serious enough to make parking on this stretch of Osborn Road feel like a design choice. A James Beard semifinalist, 2024.

  10. House-pressed coconut milk in the curries is the kind of detail that tells you everything about Talat Market's approach. This no-reservations Thai restaurant in Summerhill pairs Georgia produce with traditional Thai flavors in a room that splits the difference between industrial and vintage. The chef earned a James Beard nomination in 2024. Go for the curries and the som tum, and expect heat you'll want to chase with the fruit salad.

  11. The corrugated metal-and-wood façade on Mott Street is hard to miss, and the inside delivers: a Thai-accented diner with rattan screens, woven bamboo, and counter seats worn smooth by regulars. Ann Redding and Matt Danzer run the kitchen, and Thai tea French toast is available all day because breakfast should not have a curfew. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand, and the New York Times puts it at number 52 on its NYC list.

  12. Nong's is a casual counter-service Thai spot that grew out of a one-dish food cart and still mostly sticks to the plan: poached chicken over rice cooked in the schmaltz, with a cup of clear broth on the side. The ginger sauce has the kind of following that has Portlanders keeping a bottle in the fridge door like a family heirloom. It's cheap, easy, and the city's default answer to a cold.

  13. Rank 13. Chalong

    Traditional Southern Thai

Rattan light fixtures and dark wood set the mood at this Hell's Kitchen shared-plates spot, where the kitchen focuses on Southern Thai cooking. The menu runs through curries, noodle dishes, and seafood plates that lean traditional rather than trend-chasing. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the chef earned a James Beard semifinalist nod. Pre-theater crowds from nearby find it fits the timeline without feeling rushed.

  14. A mint-green Thai brunch cafe in Berkeley where the food leans toward Chiang Mai, not the usual pad thai circuit. The kitchen draws from northern Thailand and neighboring Laos, so flavors run sour and spicy rather than sweet. The New York Times called out the khanom krok specifically, and the Chronicle put it among the Bay Area's top 100 restaurants. The room is small and greenhouse-warm, the kind of place where nobody's trying to impress you.

  15. The dining room looks like it was decorated by a child who just discovered neon, which turns out to be exactly right for Isan-style Thai cooking this loud and alive. This Elmhurst restaurant earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand for fiery northeastern Thai food built for sharing, heavy on dried shrimp, electric fish sauce, and whole fried fish. Showing up alone is technically possible but spiritually inadvisable. A New York Times top-100 pick.

  16. The steam table at lunch, loaded with curries and fried rice, is a direct line to the original spot Patti Myint opened decades ago. Her children relaunched this Belmont Thai restaurant with two of the original cooks still behind the stove, so the continuity is not a marketing pitch. Evenings shift to full-service with cocktails and a more creative menu. The New York Times named it among Nashville's 25 best, and it landed a James Beard semifinalist nod in 2024.

  17. The khao soi here arrives in a shade of marigold so vivid it looks like a color swatch, topped with a tangle of fried noodles over chicken that's been cooked into submission. This Northern Thai restaurant in Mount Vernon Square skips the pad see ew and the crowd-pleasing standards entirely, leaning into the regional cooking the chef built her reputation on. The New York Times put it on their D.C. list, and the room fills up accordingly.

  18. A chicken rice shop on Airport Boulevard where the whole birds go through a poaching-to-ice-bath-to-hang-dry process that makes the skin pull taut and the meat collapse at the knife. The cooking traces back to Chinese immigrants who brought their techniques to Thailand and rewired them with bolder flavors. The chef landed on the 2025 New York Times Restaurant List and is a 2026 James Beard semifinalist. Seven house sauces come with; order all of them.

  19. A refurbished car wash with vendors in the old bays is an unlikely home for some of the most focused cooking in Nashville. S.S. Gai is a chicken house with a single obsession: Thai street-style fried chicken, crispy in that way that makes you slow down and pay attention, served with sticky rice and tamarind chili fish sauce. The Michelin Bib Gourmand and a New York Times nod suggest the obsession is well-placed. Order at the window and don't skip the mango sticky rice.

  20. Rank 21. Crispy Gài

    Street Food Thai

Crispy Gài is a casual Thai street food counter on Exchange Street, in a downtown where the air otherwise smells like lobster rolls and gift-shop candles. The fried chicken here comes in a handful of styles, including a Sichuan-spiced one that numbs your lips and a Hat Yai version buried under fried shallots. Get the dipping sauce flight, since it runs from sweet and tart to funky fish sauce, and The Infatuation has ranked the wings among the country's best.

  22. Boat noodles are the draw at this Thai noodle shop tucked into a Hollywood strip mall, where the broth runs thick, dark, and serious, and you pick your protein, noodle type, and heat level before the bowl hits the table. The portions are small by design, which is the shop's way of nudging you toward ordering two. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and on the LA Times 101 list. 24. Antique telephone behind the bar, weathered wood beams, tufted red leather booths, a neon sign, and a back garden that softens the whole thing into something you didn't expect from East Village Thai. 25. The interior runs like a train car, wood-paneled and faintly sweet with incense, and the menu is long enough to require a strategy. This cozy Elmhurst Thai restaurant earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand and landed on the New York Times 100 Best list, which helps explain why the room fills fast. Curries, stir-fries, salads, and fried rice cover the bases, but the crispy catfish with mango salad is the kind of dish that makes the rest of the menu feel like a warm-up.

  26. Rank 29. Ghin Khao

    Northern Thai

The name translates to "eat rice," which turns out to be solid advice. This casual Northern Thai spot on Cermak runs BYOB, with graffiti-style signage, colorful murals, and hip-hop keeping the room from taking itself too seriously. The menu is short, the flavors run hard at spicy, salty, sour, and sweet all at once, and the Michelin Bib Gourmand means the math works in your favor. Bring friends and a cooler.

  28. Thai restaurant in Chinatown where the menu runs shorter than the wine list, which tells you something about the kitchen's confidence. The room is handsome, all dark wood and woven vinyl under big arched windows, and the food moves between homey and precise without announcing it. Gang rawaeng, a turmeric curry with slow-braised beef, and the northern kao soi both earn their place on a menu that doesn't have room for passengers. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  29. Paper lanterns and candles keep things moody at this night-market-style Chinese-Thai restaurant on SE Stark, inspired by Bangkok's Chinatown. The team behind Langbaan runs a freewheeling room where wide rice noodles and double-fried chive cakes share space with a kangaroo martini that landed on Esquire's list of the best martinis in America. The New York Times put it on their 2024 restaurant list, which is the kind of thing that happens when the food is this alive.

  30. Drunken noodles with smoky barbecue brisket is not what the cookbook intended, and that's precisely the point at this Laurel District Thai restaurant. The kitchen plays fast and loose with tradition, seasoning a pork burger to taste like laab and calibrating heat levels for anyone who thinks "medium" is already pushing it. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, with cocktails that pull their weight alongside the food.

  31. Rank 34. Holy Basil

    Northern Thai

Charcoal-grilled satay mushrooms from Long Beach share a menu with Dungeness crab curry and lip-tingling beef nam tok at this small, casual Thai restaurant in Atwater Village. The team behind it built a following on Northern Thai-style sausage packed for pandemic pickup, and the cooking has only gotten looser and more confident since. The New York Times put it on their list of the 25 best restaurants in Los Angeles right now, which for a neighborhood spot with a takeout window is saying something.

  32. Vintage Thai movie posters cover the walls at this West Portal neighborhood Thai spot, where the kitchen takes familiar dishes somewhere more playful. Short rib fried rice comes with cured egg yolk; fried papaya salad arrives battered and crisp with dressing on the side. The kaya toast, pandan custard on pillowy milk bread with a scoop of ice cream, landed on The Infatuation's dessert list and you'll see why. Good for families who want something livelier than the usual takeout routine.

  33. The lamb shank arrives like a main character, trailing spiced coconut and turning heads at neighboring tables. This Thai restaurant in Upper Lawrenceville earns its reputation as a special-occasion room, with a patio that is, somewhat literally, a garden. The massaman curry it arrives in tends to sell out early, so booking a table on the earlier side is less a suggestion than a mild warning. A 2024 James Beard semifinalist.

  34. Rank 37. EEM

    Texas BBQ Thai Food Hall

EEM is a Thai restaurant that also happens to run a Texas barbecue pit, which is the kind of sentence that sounds like a dare and somehow works. Brisket burnt ends land in coconut curry, and the BBQ fried rice arrives with plenty of heat. You eat at sidewalk huts or in the café-bar, pay prices that stay friendly, and tackle the tropical drinks with the urgency of people who parked six blocks away.

  35. Rank 38. Padaek

    Homestyle Thai

Seng Luangrath is widely credited with bringing Laotian food to the DC dining conversation, and this Falls Church strip-mall restaurant is where that reputation took root. The menu leans into bright, lime-forward salads, fragrant soups, and banana-leaf-wrapped fish, with a crispy coconut-rice salad that regulars treat as non-negotiable. Homestyle Laotian cooking in a room that's casual enough for a weeknight but specific enough to feel like a find.

  36. The birds go in whole and come out deeply browned, every slice carrying crackling skin and a soft layer of fat underneath. This tiny strip-mall Thai restaurant in East Hollywood keeps things focused: duck over rice, duck over thin jade noodles, or duck as the salad. The carcass goes into the pot for a dark broth that becomes duck noodle soup, which regulars treat as a second visit folded into the first.

  37. Rank 41. Leo’s

    Northern Thai

Bird's-eye chiles, not hatch, set the tone at this Southeast Asian restaurant inside a former furniture workshop. Zak Pelaccio, who made his name with Malaysian cooking at Fatty Crab in New York, opened the place with a young chef running the kitchen who handles spice with confidence. The pork belly steak draped in prik phao paste and Thai basil keeps people coming back, and the crab steamed custard sells out most nights. On the New York Times Restaurant List for 2026.

  39. An 11-course Thai tasting menu inside the Kimpton Hotel Enso, where sweet and savory blur together so deliberately that a coconut pancake arrives with caviar and cheesecake comes topped with crispy fried onions. 41. Bamboo lanterns hang over a tranquil indoor pond, which is an unusual centerpiece for a Thai restaurant in Sonoma County but somehow works completely. The team traveled through Thailand before opening, and the food follows: bold, spicy, and more complex than the sweeter Americanized version most people know. Curry pastes are made in house. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a room this good at a price that doesn't hurt.

  42. A two-story Thai restaurant near Union Square that comes with a long bar, a full house most nights, and the kind of noise level that makes the food taste better. 43. Red lamps strung across the dining room push back hard against any suggestion this is just another Upper East Side Thai spot. It's a contemporary Thai restaurant pulling dishes from across the country, so the menu runs from Northern sai-ua spring rolls and khao soi to Southern Phuket-style curries, which is a longer journey than most places attempt. The cocktails are named after Thai temple festival games, a detail that earns its place. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  44. A menu item called "What the Hell" fried rice comes with twelve chili symbols and delivers on that promise, but this Thai restaurant in Cobble Hill is running a more interesting game than heat. 60. The name means "fragrant chili," and aroma is the throughline at this creative Thai restaurant on Geary, from hand-pounded curry pastes to a coconut ice cream finished with a plume of smoke from a traditional Thai incense candle. The kitchen applies fine-dining technique to both familiar and lesser-known dishes without making a big deal of it. The New York Times put it on their Restaurant List, and the room stays quiet enough that you can actually taste what you're eating.

  61. A tuk tuk parked in the back of a Fort Lauderdale strip mall sets the tone at this no-reservations Isan Thai restaurant, where the menu runs well past the usual curry-and-pad-thai circuit. The kitchen leans into the northeastern Thai repertoire, and when they ask how spicy you want it, they mean it as a real question. The Michelin Guide has taken notice, and the crowd filing in on a weeknight suggests word has been around for a while.

  62. A family Thai restaurant on the Westside where the chef took over from her parents and didn't soften a thing. The menu runs from papaya salad with a real kick to green curry made from fresh chili paste, and the kitchen will calibrate the heat if you ask nicely. The pastries are a quiet surprise, French technique folded into Thai flavors. The Thai tea flan alone justifies staying for dessert.

  63. Plastic tablecloths in bright, clashing colors cover the picnic tables at this casual Thai spot on Telegraph, where the vibe reads roadside Bangkok and the food backs it up. Northeastern specialties anchor the menu, including grilled meats and green papaya somtum in Thai or Lao style. The kitchen takes spice requests seriously, so having a cold Singha within reach is less optional than it sounds. The mango sticky rice at the end is the kind of thing you eat slowly.

  64. Rank 67. Chiang Rai

    Northern Thai

The facade is aggressively nondescript, which means most people walk right past a Northern Thai restaurant that the Michelin Guide has quietly noted. Inside, the room goes full color and quirk. The menu is long, but the Chiang Rai Local Food section is where to spend your attention. The kitchen defaults to gentle heat, so speak up if you want the real thing. The khao soi here swaps the usual chicken for thin-sliced raw ribeye, finished tableside by the hot broth.

  65. Rattan furniture and a quietly tropical room a short walk from Fort Greene Park set the mood at this neighborhood Thai restaurant. Southern Thai

The yellow facade on Smith Street belongs to a Southern Thai restaurant that already has people lining up, much as its predecessor in the same space once did. Inside, orange walls and a blue-and-green bar signal that subtlety was never the plan. The kitchen leans into spice and bold regional flavors, with curries, stir-fries, and a fried branzino in fish sauce that tends to stop conversation at the table.

    Modern Thai

A strip mall in Daly City is not where you expect to find a modern Thai restaurant turning out hand-made curry puffs with a crust that flaky, but here we are. The menu swings from hat yai fried chicken at brunch to clay pot catfish and curries at dinner, and the bold seasoning makes the familiar stuff taste less familiar. The Michelin Guide has taken notice, which is either the surprise or not a surprise at all, depending on how you feel about strip malls.

  68. A converted warehouse in Midtown where two sisters plate Thai street food that actually delivers on the "Thai spicy" warning if you ask for it. The menu roams from pad Thai wrapped in an egg crepe to Isaan sausage and clay-pot shrimp, with mango sticky rice and a Thai tea slushy to close. It's a casual, lively Thai restaurant that draws a crowd happy to sit with something funky and a little hot.

  69. A Flatiron bar tricked out like a 1970s Bangkok shophouse, with vintage televisions and family photos on the walls and Thai cocktails on the menu. The jasmine martini landed on Esquire's list of the best martinis in America, which gives you a sense of how seriously the drinks program is taken. The kitchen keeps pace with late-night Thai food that pairs naturally with the cocktails. Open late, which the neighborhood needed.

  70. Named for a character in a Thai folktale about twelve sisters, this cozy Southern Thai restaurant on the Lower East Side opens with cocktails named for the rest of the family. The menu is compact and the spice levels are not. Southern Thai and Isan dishes carry real heat and personality, and the coconut ice cream served inside a coconut shell is the only sensible way to end things.

    Modern Isan

The khao soi here swaps the usual chicken for duck confit, which tells you something about how seriously this East Village restaurant takes the Isaan cooking of Northeastern Thailand. The menu is short and the kitchen leans into that, making each dish with the kind of care that only works at small scale. The Michelin Guide has taken notice. Taro ice cream over coconut sticky rice closes things out on a note nobody argues with.

  72. A Thai breakfast and dessert shop tucked into the back corner of a strip mall in Gardena, where congee bubbles away in the kitchen while the rest of Los Angeles is still eating eggs. The jok, thick with pork meatballs and fresh ginger, is the right place to start. Mango sticky rice appears when it appears, and regulars know to order it before it's gone. Counter service, paper lanterns, turquoise accents, and no pretension whatsoever.

    Thai

The first question your server asks is how you feel about heat, and you should answer carefully. This sleek Bushwick Thai restaurant occupies a concrete-and-metal warehouse space dressed up with gold accents, where the menu of small sharing plates builds around chilies that show up in every corner. The khao soi has its regulars, and the crispy rice with fermented pork sausage is the kind of thing people order twice.

    Thai Wine Bar

Taan is a Thai restaurant and wine bar on West Augusta in Humboldt Park, where the menu rotates with whatever produce shows up and noodles are conspicuously absent. Fish, meat, and vegetables get cooked in traditional Thai sauces instead, with wings glazed in fish sauce caramel and a small, shifting wine list that includes bottles from Logan Square's Middle Brow. Expect the kind of neighborhood spot where nobody asks you to dress up.

  76. The roof collapsed, the years passed, and Lotus of Siam finally came back to its original Commercial Center address. This is the Thai restaurant that Jonathan Gold, the Pulitzer Prize-winning critic, once called the finest Thai meal he had ever eaten, citing its sweep across regional dishes rather than the usual Americanized playbook. The room has been modernized and the menu refreshed, but the classics that built the reputation are still on it.

  77. Slushy machines churn Technicolor drinks behind the bar, which sets the tone for this Northern Thai restaurant occupying the storied space where Pok Pok once stood. Earl Ninsom runs the room and the kitchen turns out gai yang chicken with a chargrilled, fish-sauce funk and a khao soi that makes you keep reaching for the bowl. It landed on the New York Times Restaurant List in 2026.

  78. James Syhabout of Commis runs this casual Thai-inflected counter spot in Temescal, where the menu swings between a spicy chicken sandwich lacquered in Thai chile oil and garlic noodles that somehow taste like a Bay Area institution. The cooking splits the difference between street food and comfort food, and it does so without making a big deal about it. Cash-friendly prices, a busy room, and nothing on the menu that needs a long explanation.

  82. Durian tiramisu is either the bravest or most reckless dessert call in Fremont, and Kin Len commits to it without apology. This dim, chic Thai restaurant and bar reads like a stylish neighborhood spot until the food arrives and reframes the whole thing. The menu swings wide, from spicy octopus carpaccio to banana blossom fries, and the cocktails keep pace. They do serve pad Thai, but it comes draped in oversize river prawns, just so you know where you stand.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
