The best British food in the United States, according to the experts: Food & Wine, The New York Times, and Eater have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Lord's comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in New York and Phoenix.
More Less
The Little Beast and Pleasant House Pub hold the next two places. AAA and Eater show up on more of this list than any other guide.

Rank 1. Lord's
British
A nose-to-tail British bistro in the Village where the duck-stuffed cabbage arrives large enough to feed a small party. The team behind Dame brought the same easy warmth here: cozy banquettes, unhurried service, and bar stools held for walk-ins even on a packed night. The menu leans into hearty English classics with just enough creative wobble to stay interesting. Food & Wine named the chef a Best New Chef in 2023, and a James Beard semifinalist nod followed.

Rank 2. The Little Beast
British-Indian
The lamb neck korma pie, a lard-pastry shell hiding 16 hours of braised lamb and a korma gravy heavy with almonds and warm spice, landed on the New York Times list of the year's best dishes in the country. This Ballard restaurant earned a James Beard semifinalist nod for Best New Restaurant, and Eater Seattle handed it the same category outright. The room is in a neighborhood that rewards a walk after dinner, which you will want.

Rank 3. Pleasant House Pub
British
A Bridgeport pub that takes the British meat pie seriously enough to earn a Michelin Bib Gourmand, without a single tea cozy in sight. The room runs marble tables and handmade pottery, and the crowd arrives for flaky, butter-crusted pies filled with things like steak and ale alongside minty peas and mash. The menu wanders into rarebit mac and cheese and a pub burger that pulls its weight. Fish and chips land on Fridays.

Rank 5. Camden Spit & Larder
British
The spit-roasted meats are the whole point here, anchored by a prime rib that arrives with potato rösti and fermented horseradish. Camden Spit & Larder is a modern British restaurant on Capitol Mall, where the kitchen pairs California farm ingredients with a distinctly London sensibility. Floor-to-ceiling windows and a busy bar give the room more energy than the average downtown lunch spot tends to manage.

Rank 5. Courtyard Tea Room
British
Afternoon tea inside the Boston Public Library, served in a courtyard ringed by marble arcades and a fountain that makes the city feel very far away. Scones, clotted cream, and a curated tea list arrive with the kind of unhurried service that suits the setting. It draws a pleasingly mixed crowd of locals playing tourist for an afternoon and actual tourists doing the same thing, which makes it hard to feel self-conscious.

Rank 9. Dingles Public House
British
The Scotch egg here has a jammy yolk and a proper panko crust, which is more than most British pubs stateside can say. Dingles is tucked into the back of a Hayes Valley hotel and pulls off the thing that sounds easy but usually isn't: a genuine pub with draught beer, simple cocktails, and kitchen food worth eating. Fish and chips, Welsh rarebit, sticky toffee pudding. The room is handsome; the menu is short and unsurprising, in the right way.

Rank 9. Mad Dogs & Englishmen
British
A warren of small rooms, British paraphernalia on every wall, and a conservatory that opens up when Tampa's weather cooperates: this is an English gastropub that takes the brief seriously. The Sunday roast is a weekly event, the shepherd's pie uses lamb rather than the usual shortcut, and the puff pastry sausage with curry-Dijon mayo lands exactly as good as it sounds. The Michelin Guide has it on their list.

Rank 12. Rising Tide Tavern
Fish & Chips
The sidewinder fries alone explain a lot about this casual coastal restaurant in Pacific Beach, where smashburgers and clam chowder come out with the kind of care you'd expect somewhere far more serious. The seafood traces back to the nearby Quinault Indian Nation, cocktails are good, and the kids menu is apparently a hit with people who eat off the kids menu.

British
The walls are buried in British memorabilia, which is either charming or a lot, depending on how you feel about commemorative royal plates. Either way, this is a proper English pub in Fullerton, the kind that's been around forever and makes fish and chips, bangers and mash, and homemade baked pies without apologizing for any of it. The fish and chips have a following. Scratch-made soups and desserts round things out.

Rank 16. Scotty Simpson's Fish & Chips
Fish & Chips
Scotty Simpson's is a nautical-themed corner fish fry in Brightmoor that has apparently never been told the decor trend moved on, and that's fine by everyone in the booths. You order the cod in its light house batter with fries, slaw, tartar sauce, and soft dinner rolls, and the fish flakes apart in big, tidy pieces. The fried frog legs are thick enough to need a second opinion, and the pie goes fast, so ask early.

Rank 20. George & Dragon
British
Portraits of the late Queen and Buckingham Palace ephemera cover every surface, which tells you exactly what kind of pub this is. Footy on the TVs, jerseys and flags around the bar, bangers and mash from the kitchen, and a tap list that runs well past Guinness. The native-English owner has a story involving Bar Rescue's Jon Taffer that he'll gladly share on the patio, in language the royals would find bracing.

Rank 22. The Old Monk
Fish & Chips
Pendant lights salvaged from a European monastery hang over the bar, which tells you everything about how seriously this place takes atmosphere. An old-school beer bar and pub on Henderson Avenue, The Old Monk pours drafts from around the world alongside a rotating cast of locals, with fish and chips that regulars treat as a birthright. Weekday happy hour runs until seven and has a reputation for extending the evening considerably past anyone's original plan.

A pasty bar doing roughly fifty fillings, from tikka masala to cheeseburger, in a cavernous downtown Phoenix space that somehow feels more Cornish pub than desert Southwest. The multi-story room stays dark despite the chandeliers, and the second-floor railing gives you a perch over the pool tables below. Draft Guinness is the obvious move. Phoenix New Times named it among the top 100 bars in the city.

Fish & Chips
Order-at-the-counter fish and chips in a strip mall, priced mostly in the teens, with your choice of fish battered and fried to order. The clam chowder is the thick, goopy kind you feel slightly embarrassed to enjoy, and the fried shrimp are plump enough to make you forget you're in Glendale. Tartar sauce is creamy, cocktail sauce has actual kick. Phoenix New Times named it Best Fast Food in 2024, which is either a surprise or exactly right depending on how you feel about Long John Silver's.
