The Best American Food in the United States

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best American food in the United States, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, the James Beard Awards, and the Forbes Travel Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Quince comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in San Francisco.

More Less

Emeril's and Enclos hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with AAA next.

  1. Rank 1. Quince

    Californian

The dining room was overhauled in fawn and sage, the ceilings soar, and there is velvet, which tells you exactly what kind of evening you're walking into. Quince is a tasting-menu restaurant in Jackson Square where the kitchen draws heavily from its own farm, and the chef holds three Michelin stars and a James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef. Service runs seamlessly without tipping into ceremony, which at this level is the harder trick.

  2. Rank 2. Emeril's

    Cajun & Creole

EJ Lagasse took over his father's legendary Warehouse District fine-dining room at 22, after stints at Frantzén and Core by Clare Smyth, and now holds two Michelin stars. The tasting menu threads Creole classics through a contemporary lens, BBQ shrimp tarts and deep-flavored gumbo alongside smoked salmon cheesecake. Floor-to-ceiling glass frames the kitchen like a stage, and the service team plays the room with genuine warmth. Emeril's, basically reinvented.

  3. Rank 3. Enclos

    Californian

A Victorian house steps from Sonoma Plaza conceals one of the more quietly ambitious tasting menus in Northern California. Chef Brian Limoges runs a multi-course fine dining experience that filters his New England upbringing through local ingredients, including produce from an affiliated farm nearby. A clam chawanmushi winks at chowder without belaboring the point. Two Michelin stars, earned fast.

  4. Rank 4. Lazy Bear

    New American

Diners get a pencil and a field notebook on arrival, which sets the tone for what Lazy Bear is doing: a two Michelin star tasting menu dressed up as a very fancy campout. The bi-level warehouse reads like a mogul's hunting lodge, and the kitchen runs childhood comfort food through a fine-dining fever dream, think PB&J reimagined with duck liver mousse. Five sommeliers are on staff, each with a distinct specialty, which is either reassuring or a lot.

  5. Rank 5. Atlas

    Modern American

Rotating gallery installations line the walls of this fine dining room inside the St. Regis, turning dinner into a mild competition between the food and the art. Chef Freddy Money runs a seasonal New American menu with European leanings, and the kitchen holds a Michelin star, a Forbes Five Star, and AAA Five Diamonds. The cheese cart and zero-proof cocktails signal a team that enjoys the longer format.

  6. Rank 6. Aubergine

    Californian

A tasting menu restaurant tucked inside a Carmel inn, Aubergine holds two Michelin stars and a Forbes Five Star, and the room earns all the quiet confidence that implies. Chef Justin Cogley's cooking is rooted in place, the coast and its ingredients showing up in precise, unhurried courses. The sommeliers seem to genuinely enjoy their job, which, given the wine list, makes sense. Dress nicely; the other guests certainly did.

  7. Checkerboard floors, mustard velvet banquettes, and stained glass windows set the scene at this cozy Rittenhouse townhouse, where the eight-course tasting menu weaves classic French technique through ingredients and ideas from the African diaspora. The coconut, the plantain, the frothy sauce mopped up with Caribbean coco bread: it reads like a résumé with a point of view. A James Beard Outstanding Restaurant winner and Michelin-starred, with a bar upstairs that earned its own Beard nomination.

  8. Rank 8. Gramercy Tavern

    Contemporary American

The room divides in two: a buzzy front Tavern with bar seats and an à la carte menu, and a quieter Dining Room behind it running a prix-fixe. Both are fine dining by any sane measure, just at different volumes. The seasonal contemporary American menu leans on local produce with French technique behind it. Gramercy holds a Michelin star and a spot on North America's 50 Best. Danny Meyer's flagship, been around forever, and still the restaurant half of New York uses to impress the other half.

  9. Rank 9. Oyster Oyster

    Vegetarian American

A nine-course vegetable tasting menu in Shaw where the chef holds a James Beard Award and a Michelin star, and still manages to make a beet taste like pastrami. Rob Rubba's kitchen treats local farms as the whole point, not a selling line, and the results are the kind of thing that makes omnivores quietly reconsider their priorities. The bread alone, enriched with "garleeks" and served with sunflower-marigold butter, gets talked about for days afterward.

  10. Rank 10. Saga

    Modern Soul Food

The elevator deposits you on the 63rd floor of a landmark skyscraper before you've had time to rehearse an expression for the view. Saga is a fine-dining tasting menu restaurant with two Michelin stars and velvet banquettes to match the ambition. Charlie Mitchell's cooking runs soul-food maximalism through Japanese minimalism, producing bites that read delicate and land heavy. The Moroccan tea service closing the meal is a quiet house tradition worth knowing about.

  11. Brisket exists here, but only on Fridays, which tells you something about a barbecue joint's confidence. LeRoy and Lewis is a new-school BBQ shop in Garrison Park, run by two couples who built it from a food truck into a Michelin-starred spot with glazed brick walls and a peaked roof. The menu leans into beef cheeks, rotating sausages, and whatever specials the week demands, with banana pudding tiramisu for anyone who needed proof this isn't a traditionalist operation.

  12. Rank 12. Bastion

    Southern

You pass through a cocktail bar to get to the dining room, which sets the tone. Bastion is a tasting-menu restaurant in Wedgewood-Houston built around contemporary Southern cooking that treats the region's pantry as a creative dare rather than a comfort blanket. The kitchen holds a Michelin star and a James Beard nomination, and earns both by keeping things loose enough that the whole thing still feels like a good night out.

  13. Rank 13. Vern's

    American

Candlelit tables on rich wood floors, a short menu that shifts with the seasons, and a wine list that the front-of-house half of the husband-and-wife team clearly thinks about hard. Vern's is a relaxed neighborhood restaurant with a Michelin star and a New York Times nod, which tells you everything about the gap between what it looks like and what comes out of the kitchen. Lowcountry ingredients do most of the talking; the pasta is made in house.

  14. Rank 14. The Progress

    Modern American

A two-story room of wood, stone, and skylights on the Fillmore, this California-meets-Nordic restaurant is built around sharing plates bold enough to stop conversations mid-sentence. The Liberty Farms duck, arriving with a mountain of peanut fried rice, tends to get a round of applause from neighboring tables. The Progress holds a Michelin star and a James Beard nomination, and the martini has its own press clippings.

  15. Rank 15. Press

    Californian

The wine list reads like a love letter to Napa, which is fitting given that Wine Enthusiast put Press in its Restaurant Hall of Fame. This Michelin-starred tasting room off Highway 29 has a soaring dining room anchored by a fireplace, warm wood, and the comfortable hush of people who have nowhere better to be. The kitchen keeps things precise and uncluttered, letting the ingredients carry the weight rather than saucing them into submission.

  16. Dim sum carts wheel through a loud, industrial-chic room in the Fillmore, carrying seasonal California small plates you flag down as they pass. You build the meal yourself, which sounds chaotic and mostly is, in the good way. The cooking leans eclectic and comfort-forward, and the Michelin star suggests someone in the kitchen knows exactly what they're doing. Reservations disappear fast; the walk-in line forms before the doors open.

  18. The wood-fired hearth in the open kitchen sets the mood before anything arrives at the table. This fine dining room in a Shaw alley does Mid-Atlantic cooking with a Southern undertow, and the chef's commitment to the region shows in everything from rooftop herbs to the catfish slider that's been on the menu since forever. A Michelin star keeps company with crowds who dress up but aren't stiff about it.

  19. Rank 19. Stubborn Seed

    New American

The glass-fronted kitchen puts the cooking on full display at this sleek, intimate fine dining spot on a busy Miami Beach corner. Jeremy Ford runs an ambitious tasting menu that pulls in Latin and Asian influences, and the kitchen supplies itself from its own organic farm in Redland, which is either admirable or showing off. Probably both. Michelin has given it a star, and the room fills accordingly.

  20. Red oak smoke colors the brisket a distinct hue that regulars clock before they even pick up a tray. This Michelin-starred barbecue spot in Spring runs Tuesday through Saturday until sellout, so the line forms before the doors open at eleven, and regulars order ahead. Creekstone Farms prime cuts and beef ribs that somehow justify a forty-minute drive from Houston are why Texas Monthly put it on their list of the state's fifty best BBQ joints.

  21. Rank 21. Ariete

    American-Cuban

Patio or dining room, the kitchen sends the same meal either way, which tells you something about how this Coconut Grove fine-dining room operates. Michael Beltran's French-inflected New American menu earns a Michelin star on the strength of sauces that feel like the actual point of each dish, with venison tartare and bone marrow sabayon as a case in point. The kind of place where the bread course quietly becomes a highlight.

  22. Rank 22. Virtue

    Southern

Skillet cornbread arrives with a steak knife and honey butter, which tells you most of what you need to know about Erick Williams's Southern restaurant in Hyde Park. The dining room is warm and unhurried, the kind of place the university crowd treats as a standing Thursday plan. Williams holds two James Beard Awards, and the Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand. The cooking is rooted and serious without ever feeling like a lecture.

  23. Rank 23. Superiority Burger

    Vegetarian American

The quinoa-chickpea-walnut burger that made Brooks Headley famous is still on the menu at this vegetarian burger shop in the East Village, now in a bigger room with vintage diner bones. Nothing here pretends to be meat, which turns out to be the whole point. The Michelin Bib Gourmand and a New York Times top-100 spot follow naturally from cooking that treats bold seasoning and smart texture as the actual job. Save room for dessert; Headley came up as a pastry chef.

  24. A massive, custom-built pit dominates the backyard of this East Austin BBQ shop, and the line that snakes toward it on any given afternoon is its own kind of argument. The brisket arrives at the counter still warm enough to stop you mid-sentence, and the house-made sausages and ribs don't ask permission either. Tammy Wynette on the speakers, kimchi and chipotle slaw in the case. La Barbecue holds a Michelin star.

  26. Rank 26. Dai Due

    American

The butcher case up front, stocked with antelope salami and wild boar terrine, gives you a fair warning about what kind of restaurant this is. Dai Due is a supper club-style Texan spot where nearly everything on the plate, from the meat to the olive oil, comes from within state lines. The chef takes that constraint as a creative challenge rather than a marketing line, and the results run pleasantly strange. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand.

  27. Rank 27. Localis

    Californian

A tasting menu spot in a quiet Sacramento neighborhood where the chef roams the counter explaining exactly what you're eating and asking what you thought of it, which is either refreshing or unnerving depending on your relationship with honesty. The menu is Californian at its core, built on sourced ingredients, but veers into global territory with a light touch. Holds a Michelin star.

  28. A neighborhood restaurant in Logan Square that won a James Beard Award for Outstanding Hospitality, which tells you something before you've even sat down. The menu rotates with the seasons, so regulars show up trusting the kitchen rather than ordering from memory. The room fills fast from morning through dinner, and the bar in the adjacent space is a solid solo option. The Michelin Guide lists it as a Bib Gourmand.

  29. Rank 29. Stissing House

    Tavern American

Candlelit tables inside an 18th-century building that, to be honest, should never have stopped being an inn. Clare de Boer of King in the West Village runs this Pine Plains tavern, and the kitchen treats apparent simplicity as a discipline rather than a shortcut. Food & Wine named it one of the top US restaurants in 2025, and it landed a James Beard semifinalist nod for Best New Restaurant. Probably worth the drive from anywhere you are.

  30. Rank 30. Dirt Candy

    Vegetarian American

Amanda Cohen has been making vegetables the whole point since before that was a thing anyone said, and her Lower East Side tasting menu is where that conviction lands hardest. One menu, no substitutions, seasonal produce pushed through pickling, raw preparations, and desserts that can't quite decide if they're sweet. A Michelin star and a James Beard nomination confirm the kitchen's seriousness, even when the food is having fun.

  31. Rank 31. Barley Swine

    Creative Southwestern

Barley Swine collects rainwater for its garden and plates the results on dishes sourced from Goodwill, which tells you roughly everything about where it sits on the spectrum between earnest and clever. It's a tasting-menu restaurant with a Michelin star, but the room runs genuinely casual, shorts-and-sneakers casual. The kitchen leans on local ingredients filtered through Mexican and Southern traditions, then takes them somewhere unexpected every season.

  32. Rank 31. InterStellar BBQ

    Texas Barbecue

The line forms before the door swings open, which tells you most of what you need to know about this BBQ shop in a strip mall off 620. Pitmaster John Bates runs brisket over post oak low and slow, and the sides, particularly the smoked scalloped potatoes and poblano creamed corn, get taken just as seriously. A Michelin star, which no one saw coming from a strip mall, arrived anyway.

  33. Rank 33. Spring

    Contemporary American

Exposed brick and a vaulted dark-wood ceiling set the tone at this Michelin-starred fine dining room in downtown Marietta, where the menu is short by design and the cooking lets ingredients argue for themselves. The chef keeps things deceptively simple, which is harder than it looks. The wine list has real range. A James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Southeast, this is the kind of place that makes Marietta a destination, not a detour.

  34. Rank 34. Plumed Horse

    Californian

A glass-walled wine cellar you can see right through the dining room sets the tone at this elegant Saratoga fine dining destination, which holds a Michelin star. The kitchen runs on California's seasons, offered as a tasting menu or a multicourse prix fixe, and the chef navigates meat, seafood, and vegetables with the same easy confidence. The room is quiet and unhurried, the kind where the sommelier actually knows the cellar cold.

  37. Rank 37. Valentine

    Southwestern-Sonoran

A churro waffle with a cult following and a soft pretzel served with butter blended from guinea hen fat says about everything you need to know about Valentine's priorities. This all-day cafe and restaurant in the Melrose District does wood-fired Sonoran cooking with Arizona ingredients treated like the whole point, not a talking point. The chef is a James Beard semifinalist, and the elote pasta has its own fan club. The vintage furniture store in the back is not a joke.

  38. Rank 38. Odd Duck

    Southern

A food truck that grew up and got a roof, Odd Duck on South Lamar is a casual, come-as-you-are restaurant built around shareable Southern plates with a roving global curiosity. Chicken heart satay sits near wagyu burgers and stuffed quail with dirty rice, and nobody seems troubled by the range. The Michelin Bib Gourmand recognized it, and the sourdough ice cream with pecan streusel will make you understand why the room is always full.

  39. The turquoise Garden District mansion has been turning out Modern New Orleans Creole since Ella Brennan and a young Emeril Lagasse were essentially inventing the genre together. Fine dining in the grand sense, white tablecloths and all, though the room skews festive rather than stiff. Meg Bickford runs the kitchen now, keeping the cooking by turns classicist and a little bodacious. Wine Enthusiast put the cellar in its Hall of Fame, and the weekday lunch martinis go for a quarter.

  40. Post oak from nearby farms fuels the pits at this Fort Worth BBQ shop, open just a few days a week until the meat runs out, which it does. The young crew behind Goldee's earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand and landed at number three on Texas Monthly's 50 Best BBQ Joints, so the line forms early and long. Black Angus brisket, cooked low and slow, is the draw; the sweet-tart mustard sauce alongside it is quietly non-negotiable.

  41. Rank 41. Madcap

    American

The walls at this San Anselmo tasting menu spot are hung with large, deeply strange paintings, the kind that make you wonder if you've wandered into a fever dream. You haven't. Ron Siegel's eight-course prix fixe runs French and Japanese currents through a modern American frame, and the kitchen is as composed as the art is unhinged. A Michelin star, and a fraction of the price you'd pay for comparable cooking in the city.

  42. A barely-there sign on Beacon Hill marks this casual Guamanian restaurant and bar, which is either accidental humility or the universe's way of filtering out TikTokers (it has not worked). The menu follows the chef's biography through Filipino chicken adobo tacos and Guam-style corn soup, but the achiote-orange empanadas, stuffed with raisined beef and served in a pool of fina'denne', are what drew a James Beard semifinalist nod in 2025.

  43. Rank 43. Oberlin

    American

Oberlin is a downtown Providence restaurant where locals take their New York friends to prove the city can be chic and still feed you well. The seafood plates rotate, the staff will talk you through the vermouth list without making you feel like a tourist, and the salt cod brandade arrives with grilled country bread. It's a James Beard Outstanding Restaurant nominee, and the raw bar next door handles the wait.

  44. Rank 45. Franklin Barbecue

    Central Texas Barbecue

The line outside this Austin BBQ shop starts forming before most people have had breakfast, which tells you something. Inside, corrugated metal and cement floors keep things honest while the board above the counter does all the talking: brisket, ribs, sausage, pulled pork, turkey. The brisket comes sliced to order, weighed, wrapped in butcher paper, and set on a blue tray. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which is a polite way of saying the wait isn't the punishment it sounds like.

  45. Rank 46. Sixty Three Clinton

    Modern American

A tasting menu in a quietly understated Lower East Side room that reads far more modest than what comes out of the kitchen. The cooking is precise and composed, moving from a breakfast taco opener to scallop to a short rib and closing on goat milk ice cream. Nothing announces itself loudly, which is somehow the whole point. The service knows the menu cold. It holds a Michelin star.

  46. Rank 47. River Twice

    Modern American

The small tables at this modern New American restaurant come fitted with little drawers for your cutlery, which tells you something about how seriously things are taken here. Chef Randy Rucker runs a monthly multicourse tasting menu with a seafood lean and a French-Japanese sensibility, all from local ingredients. Counter seats face the kitchen. A James Beard semifinalist, and the floor-to-ceiling corner windows make the room feel like a decent consolation prize.

  47. The brass footrest running the length of the bar sets the tone: this is a proper neighborhood tavern in Red Hook, the kind with exposed brick, floral wallpaper, and candles wedged between wine bottles on tight-packed tables. The menu is short and the cooking leans classic, which is a polite way of saying the dry-aged cheeseburger with cottage fries is not something you'll talk yourself out of. The kitchen's instinct runs toward balance, letting a well-made broth or a carefully built sauce do the convincing. A Creole fine dining institution in New Orleans, it holds a James Beard America's Classics Award and a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the cooking, gumbo, fried chicken, peach cobbler, earns every regulars' loyalty. 50. The pastrami gets brined, pepper-and-coriander rubbed, and smoked before it lands on house-made rye sourdough at this Mueller BBQ shop and deli. Texas Monthly and the New York Times have both taken notice, and the James Beard committee named the team a semifinalist. Concrete floors, wooden-slat booths, and a menu that wanders happily between brisket by the pound and matzoh ball soup. No fuss about it.

  51. Rank 52. Nicks on Broadway

    Seasonal American

  52. Rank 53. Molly's Rise and Shine

    Southern American

Formica tabletops and vinyl chairs set the scene at this Garden District breakfast spot, which serves nothing but breakfast and takes that mandate seriously. The menu runs from yogurt and granola to loaded grits, biscuits and gravy, and a riff on the fast-food McMuffin with sage sausage and gooey American cheese. A James Beard semifinalist that manages to feel nothing like one, in the best way.

  53. Rank 54. Zasu

    Contemporary American

A quiet cottage in Mid-City that reads more neighborhood hideaway than Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant, which is a large part of the point. Sue Zemanick keeps the menu tight, maybe a dozen dishes leaning into Gulf seafood and French technique, and the room runs to dark green walls and warm gold tones. The kind of table where nobody rushes you and the food earns the silence. Zasu holds a Michelin star.

  54. The carriage house bones are the whole point: a fireplace center stage in winter, and windows that swing open onto a cobblestoned side street in summer, letting Barrow Street essentially become part of the room. This is a fine dining institution that New Yorkers bring people to when they want the city to do the heavy lifting, which it does without much trouble. The kind of place that makes a Tuesday feel like an occasion.

  55. Rank 56. Plow

    American

The lemon-ricotta silver dollar pancakes here have a following that generates a line down the block most weekend mornings, which tells you everything about what kind of brunch spot Plow is. It's a casual, easygoing neighborhood place in Potrero Hill with a tight, unfussy menu built around a few things done carefully. The combination plate covers all the bases at once: crispy potatoes, eggs, meat, and those pancakes, with lemon curd on the side if you want to commit.

  56. Rank 57. Husk

    Southern

The historic two-story Queen Street house has its own garden out front, which tells you something about how seriously this Southern restaurant takes its sourcing. Seafood arrives in seasoned broths, the cornbread has inspired genuine reverence, and the pimento cheese with country ham is the kind of opener that makes the rest of the menu feel like bonus rounds. Reservations are scarce, and a sidewalk queue forms before the doors open most evenings.

  57. Rank 58. Fearing's

    Southwestern American

Dean Fearing's restaurant inside the Ritz-Carlton looks like a traditional steakhouse until the food arrives. It's a polished Southwestern dining room where the menu wanders confidently into buffalo and antelope territory alongside filets, and a carpaccio riff assembles tuna, wagyu, salmon, and barbecued eel into something resembling stained glass. The kind of place that earns a Forbes Four Star and still manages to serve a baklava s'more without embarrassing itself.

  58. Rank 59. Oak Park

    Modern American

A 5,000-bottle wine cellar sits beneath a modern American dining room in a residential Des Moines neighborhood, and the kitchen leans hard on an on-site garden for its produce. The chef couple behind it trained at Michelin-starred restaurants abroad before landing here, which may explain the tables booked out for months. The dessert menu runs from a $4 chocolate-fig bar to a $100 banana split, which tells you most of what you need to know about the range.

  59. Rank 60. J.C. Holdway

    Appalachian

The open kitchen anchors a room where wood floors and exposed ductwork split the difference between industrial loft and neighborhood restaurant. J.C. Holdway is a Southern-leaning American dinner spot in downtown Knoxville, the kind where buttermilk biscuits arrive topped with braised pork belly and the pasta is house-made. The New York Times put it on their Restaurant List, and the chef is a James Beard semifinalist. Tennessee ingredients run through nearly everything.

  60. Rank 61. Garrison

    American

The open kitchen runs long and hot, with live fire doing most of the talking at this upscale American restaurant inside the Fairmont Austin. The menu moves between bright, acid-forward starters and serious grilled meat, so a table here tends to drift toward the Akaushi wagyu by the end of the night. The cooking holds its own well away from hotel-restaurant expectations, which is saying something in a city with no shortage of smoke and ambition.

    Central Texas Barbecue

Barbs B Q is a weekend-only BBQ shop in Lockhart that draws hours-long lines on Saturdays and Sundays, which is the only time the pitmaster opens the doors. The compact menu runs classic smoked meats with unexpected turns, like pork ribs finished with lime zest and turkey with a black pepper rub. Texas Monthly, Bon Appétit, and the New York Times have all taken notice, and the Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand.

  63. Rank 65. Heritage Barbecue

    Central Texas Barbecue

The smoke from California white oak drifts into the parking lot long before you reach the door, which is by design and also a warning to arrive early. Heritage is a Texas barbecue shop in San Juan Capistrano where the line forms fast and brisket runs out faster. The chef earned a James Beard nomination and a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the trays of charred, glistening meat make both feel self-explanatory. Save room for the banana pudding.

  64. Rank 66. Seabird

    Southern Seafood

Swordfish schnitzel doesn't show up on many Southern seafood menus, but Dean Neff, a James Beard Outstanding Chef nominee, has that kind of restless disposition. Seabird is a full-service seafood restaurant on the Wilmington waterfront, nautical in feel without leaning on the clichés, serving dinner and weekend brunch. The catfish and grits crowd and the caviar deviled eggs crowd somehow occupy the same room, and neither seems bothered by the other.

    Creative American

Dark walls covered in Japanese murals set the mood at this Chinatown fine dining spot, where the kitchen blends Vietnamese, Mexican, Italian, and Japanese influences into something that shouldn't work as well as it does. An open fire does a lot of the heavy lifting. The chef earned a James Beard nomination for Best Chef Southwest, which tracks for a room this quietly serious about food that refuses to settle on any one identity.

  67. Rank 69. Cochon

    Cajun & Creole

A converted warehouse in the Central Business District, Cochon does Southern cooking with a Louisiana accent: wood-fired oysters, fried alligator, gumbo loaded with house-made andouille, and rabbit and dumplings pulled from the chef's family recipes. The cracklins with Steen's cane syrup make a strong case for arriving hungry. The whiskey and bourbon list is long enough to make the decision feel important. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  68. Rank 70. Burnt Bean Co.

    Texas Barbecue

The line forms before the doors open, which has been the rhythm at this Seguin BBQ shop since Ernest Servantes and Dave Kirkland, both decorated in the competition circuit, opened together. The industrial room with iron beams and exposed brick fills fast. Brisket, ribs, and sausage lean toward tender and lightly smoked rather than aggressively bark-forward. A Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard nomination keep the queue honest.

  69. Rank 71. Spruce

    Modern American Steakhouse

Spruce sits in one of San Francisco's quieter money neighborhoods, Sacramento Street, where the locals dress well and never seem to be in a hurry. It's a fine dining room doing Modern American with a California lean, the kind of place where lunch runs to composed salads and sandwiches and dinner quietly shifts registers. 71. Rank 73. Delilah

    American

You descend a staircase into a room held up by 40-foot cast brass palms and malachite-inlaid tables, which sets the tone pretty efficiently. Delilah is a supper club inside the Wynn that leans hard into old Vegas glamour, the kind of room that makes you feel underdressed even when you're not. The beverage program earned a James Beard nomination. Dress up; this is not a jeans situation.

  72. Rank 74. High Street

    Seasonal American

A bakery counter next door, a private dining room in back, and cooking classes on the books make this feel more like a culinary compound than a restaurant. The lunch crowd fills up on hoagies, but dinner is where the kitchen stretches out, turning out pastas and wood-fired pizzas that take real swings. Ellen Yin holds a James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur, and the open kitchen makes it easy to watch the team earn it.

The smoked turkey and peppery pork ribs fill out a tray you'll keep adding to despite your better judgment, and the sides, brisket-studded beans included, pull their weight. Lines form fast, so regulars often grab their bags and go. A James Beard semifinalist, and ranked tenth on Washingtonian's top 100.

  75. Rank 77. Crawfish & Noodles

    Vietnamese Cajun & Creole

This is a Viet-Cajun crawfish house on Bellaire Boulevard, where you wear a bib and gloves big enough to look like a bit. The crawfish come boiled with lemongrass and ginger, and the turkey necks arrive pre-spiced. The room works like a sports bar that lost the plot, with the Astros on every TV and a Darth Vader helmet in the corner nobody will explain. The bar is serious, the mountain views are free.

The American Wagyu brisket is the kind of thing that makes you briefly reconsider your whole life. This counter-service BBQ spot smokes everything over wood, and the lineup, brisket, pork ribs, and smoked turkey, has the room packed early and the bags out the door fast. The sides pull their weight too, particularly the brisket-studded beans. A James Beard semifinalist in 2026, it ranked tenth on Washingtonian's list that same year.

  83. String lights and climbing vines turn the back patio into the kind of dinner setting that makes you forget you're in the middle of a city. East Texas-style barbecue joint that also does breakfast, which tells you something about how seriously Houston takes its mornings. The smoker runs through brisket, ribs, sausage, turkey, and chicken, and the sides, dirty rice and baked beans among them, hold their own. The chef was a James Beard semifinalist in 2023. Been a neighborhood staple long enough that ordering without looking at the menu is a point of local pride.

  87. Rank 89. Honeysuckle

    Afro-centric American

The seating choices alone tell you something: big communal tables, a long bar, or low couches, all inside a roomy industrial space on North Broad. Honeysuckle is an Afro-centric American restaurant built around a prix fixe that moves from hush puppies with country ham to wagyu beef cheek and oxtail tamales without ever losing its thread. The chef earned a 2026 James Beard nomination, and the cooking shows why, course after careful course.

  88. The tater tot casserole with fried onions has its own reputation at this Houston Heights BBQ shop, which is saying something given the brisket. A Creole barbecue trailer parked behind a kolache shop is either a strange detour or exactly the point, and at Parish it's the point. Cajun spice rubs and Tabasco glazes nudge central Texas classics sideways, and the menu runs past brisket into pulled duck and boudin. Sides like pimento mac topped with Zapp's chips and crawfish cornbread stuffing do their own convincing. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  90. Rank 92. Selby's

Old-school Hollywood glamour on El Camino Real sounds like a contradiction, but Selby's pulls it off. This is fine dining, the kind where the servers are sharply dressed and seem to have been born knowing which fork goes where. The kitchen leans into classic American comfort, given a subtle lift by produce from the team's own private farm. The chocolate cake has become a signature for a reason. Michelin has awarded it one star.

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
