The Best Nordic Food in the United States

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best Nordic food in the United States, according to the experts: AAA, the Michelin Guide, and The 50 have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Sons & Daughters comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in New York and San Francisco.

More Less

Aquavit and Kiln hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The New York Times next.

  1. Wood-paneled walls and an open kitchen that puts the chefs on something like a stage set the scene at this Mission District tasting menu restaurant, where Harrison Cheney runs a Nordic-inflected program on Californian ingredients. Ferments, pickles, and smoked things do a lot of the work alongside hyper-seasonal produce. It holds two Michelin stars and a spot on North America's 50 Best list at number 45.

  2. Rank 2. Aquavit

    Sustainable Nordic

Bread arrives as a dense, seed-studded round of fresh rye, and that commitment to doing the Nordic thing properly runs through every course of Aquavit's tasting menu. Emma Bengtsson grew up in a Swedish fishing village, and the kitchen reflects it, precise and abundant rather than austere. Two Michelin stars and an AAA Five Diamond make the case before you even sit down. Midtown, jackets optional but effort appreciated.

  3. Rank 3. Kiln

    Modern Nordic

Hip-hop rattles through a spare warehouse space while tattooed cooks walk each course to the table, and that tension is the whole point of Kiln. Chef John Wesley runs a two-and-a-half-hour tasting menu that leans Nordic, leaning hard on curing, fermentation, and drying, though France and Japan show up too. It holds two Michelin stars, and the room, white tablecloths and all, takes absolutely none of that seriously.

  4. Rank 4. Aska

    New Nordic

Black tablecloths, candlelight, and a deer skull resting on a bed of lichen: Fredrik Berselius runs a tasting menu restaurant in South Williamsburg that feels less like dinner and more like being guided through a dark forest by something polite but feral. The cooking is New Nordic in spirit, pulling from Northeastern seasonality, and it holds two Michelin stars and a spot on North America's 50 Best. Wear something dark; you'll blend right in.

  5. Rank 5. Elske

    Nordic

A patio strung with soft light anchors this fine dining room on Randolph's restaurant row, where the menu runs Danish-inflected and quietly seasonal. The kitchen, holding a Michelin star, offers both a tasting menu and à la carte, so the commitment level is yours to choose. Anna Posey's desserts are compositions in the visual-arts sense, restrained and a little arresting. The kind of room where nobody seems to be performing.

  6. Rank 6. Brutø

    Nordic Sushi

An omakase counter tucked into the Free Market at Dairy Block, Brutø runs a tasting menu where the hearth does most of the talking. The kitchen blends Nordic and Japanese instincts with a serious fermentation program, and the non-alcoholic pairing is worth ordering without hesitation. Chef Byron Gomez holds a Michelin star and a James Beard Award, which is a lot of hardware for a counter hidden inside a food hall.

  7. Rank 7. Ebbe

    Contemporary Nordic

A U-shaped marble bar dominates the room at this downtown Tampa tasting-menu spot, where the chef's Swedish roots quietly steer everything on the plate. One menu, no choices, and the cooking is precise without being fussy, leaning on fermentation, Nordic technique, and very good sourcing. It holds a Michelin star and draws the kind of crowd that books a month out and still feels like they got lucky.

  8. Wood paneling, vintage platters, and a Nordic-inflected seafood menu that's refined without being precious: Fet-Fisk reads like it's been on Liberty Ave forever, even if it hasn't. The cooking moves between delicate and rustic without blinking. A James Beard nominee for Best New Restaurant in 2025, and on the New York Times Restaurant List in 2024. The room is the kind of comfortable that makes a long dinner feel like a reasonable idea.

  9. Rank 9. Kantine

    Nordic Bakery

Cardamom buns, jumbo jam thumbprints, and gingery caramel cookies set the tone at this Scandinavian café and bakery on Market Street. The menu leans seasonal, with tartines on sprouted rye and both sweet and savory porridges, but the flaky seed-topped pastry stuffed with soft scrambled eggs and molten havarti is what brings people back. Grab a sidewalk table and let the Market Street parade do its thing.

  13. Rank 13. Loveless

    New York Nordic Coffee Shop

The pink-tiled bar and arched mirrors make the Nordic-leaning coffee shop look like a pastel fever dream from 1987, and the baristas lean into the contrast by taking everything very seriously. Pour-overs and espresso drinks are made with their own roasts, and a bowl of oatmeal is on the table if you need it. Sustainability runs deep here, from compostable materials to a Loring roaster chosen specifically for its fuel efficiency.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
