The best Cajun and Creole food in the United States, according to the experts: AAA, the Michelin Guide, and The 50 have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Emeril's comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in New Orleans and Houston.
More Less
Commander's Palace and Dooky Chase hold the next two places. Eater shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Houstonia close behind.

Rank 1. Emeril's
Cajun & Creole
EJ Lagasse took over his father's legendary Warehouse District fine-dining room at 22, after stints at Frantzén and Core by Clare Smyth, and now holds two Michelin stars. The tasting menu threads Creole classics through a contemporary lens, BBQ shrimp tarts and deep-flavored gumbo alongside smoked salmon cheesecake. Floor-to-ceiling glass frames the kitchen like a stage, and the service team plays the room with genuine warmth. Emeril's, basically reinvented.

Rank 2. Commander's Palace
Cajun & Creole
The turquoise Garden District mansion has been turning out Modern New Orleans Creole since Ella Brennan and a young Emeril Lagasse were essentially inventing the genre together. Fine dining in the grand sense, white tablecloths and all, though the room skews festive rather than stiff. Meg Bickford runs the kitchen now, keeping the cooking by turns classicist and a little bodacious. Wine Enthusiast put the cellar in its Hall of Fame, and the weekday lunch martinis go for a quarter.

Rank 3. Dooky Chase
Cajun & Creole
The dining room walls, red and hung with African-American art, tell you this is a place with a history before you've touched the menu. A Creole fine dining institution in New Orleans, it holds a James Beard America's Classics Award and a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the cooking, gumbo, fried chicken, peach cobbler, earns every regulars' loyalty. The matriarchs still walk each table personally, which at a certain point stops being service and starts being something else.

Rank 4. Cochon
Cajun & Creole
A converted warehouse in the Central Business District, Cochon does Southern cooking with a Louisiana accent: wood-fired oysters, fried alligator, gumbo loaded with house-made andouille, and rabbit and dumplings pulled from the chef's family recipes. The cracklins with Steen's cane syrup make a strong case for arriving hungry. The whiskey and bourbon list is long enough to make the decision feel important. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

Vietnamese Cajun & Creole
This is a Viet-Cajun crawfish house on Bellaire Boulevard, where you wear a bib and gloves big enough to look like a bit. The crawfish come boiled with lemongrass and ginger, and the turkey necks arrive pre-spiced. The room works like a sports bar that lost the plot, with the Astros on every TV and a Darth Vader helmet in the corner nobody will explain. It's casual, loud, and messy, and the check stays reasonable.

This is the old-line Creole dining room on Royal Street where bananas foster was invented, and the servers still set it on fire at your table without losing track of your questions. It's fine dining in the jacket-and-good-posture sense, so you'll find yourself saying "powder room" without being asked. The bar program has James Beard attention of its own, and the Sazerac arrives the way it should.

Contemporary Cajun & Creole
The restaurant is named for chef Michelle Carpenter's grandmother, whose fried chicken recipe anchors the menu at this contemporary Cajun and Creole spot in Oak Cliff. Dark-meat, deeply seasoned, and handed down through generations, it's the kind of dish that makes everything else feel like a warm-up act. The charbroiled oysters with Parmesan and andouille crumbles suggest the kitchen has range. A James Beard nominee for Best New Restaurant in 2023.

The table by the window on St. Charles is the one to request, and once you're in it you'll understand why this place has been around forever. The house-made spaghetti fills tables every night, and the duck confit with dirty rice keeps people coming back.

Real butter and sugar go into the crawfish boil here, which tilts the whole thing sweeter than the standard Cajun approach. The menu does what it promises and little else, which in this corner of Houston is plenty.

Gumbo as dark as a Louisiana bayou at midnight, only built around smoked brisket and wilted greens, is a reasonable summary of what the kitchen is doing here. This modern Cajun-Creole restaurant in Louisville's Schnitzelburg neighborhood lands chef Lawrence Weeks on the New York Times Restaurant List and a James Beard Emerging Chef semifinalist nod, both in the same year. The menu takes familiar Southern dishes and quietly tilts them sideways with Haitian, Latin, and Gulf Coast influences.

Glittery chandeliers and wax candles do a lot of heavy lifting in this handsome fine dining room on Tchoupitoulas, where exposed brick and white tablecloths split the difference between grand and comfortable. A sandwich shop on Haight doing exactly one thing from New Orleans: the muffuletta, served in a wedge like a slice of savory pie, toasted or cold. The meat version layers prosciutto, mortadella, soppressata, and provolone under a spicy olive spread; mushrooms and scallions handle the vegetarian side. The pickled egg salad with potato chips stuffed inside is its own argument. Seating is tight, but Buena Vista Park is a short walk away, which seems intentional.

A fifteen-minute ferry ride from the French Quarter lands you in Algiers, where Melissa Martin's second restaurant occupies a century-old property that reads more Provençal farmhouse than Louisiana. The chandelier-and-tile dining room reads like a 19th-century brasserie someone quietly upgraded from the inside. This is a modern American bistro on Magazine Street where the chef folds global techniques into the Creole tradition without making a fuss about it. The New York Times named it among New Orleans' 25 best right now, and a James Beard semifinalist nod followed. The food moves forward; the room pulls you back. White tablecloths in an Uptown cottage near a bend in the river, which tells you something about how New Orleans operates. Brigtsen's is a Cajun-Creole restaurant where the chef spent years under Paul Prudhomme absorbing the bayou side of Louisiana cooking, then brought it back to the city and blended the two traditions into something that belongs entirely to this place. The room is unhurried, the menu is not trying to be fashionable, and that combination tends to fill tables with regulars.

The menu runs from oysters to blackened soft-shell crab to dark chocolate crémeux, and the cocktails are the kind that make you order a second before finishing the first. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tracks: big flavors, no ceremony.

Cajun & Creole
A Cajun-Creole restaurant in Sarasota's Southside Village that has no particular business being this good at gumbo. The room runs kitschy and colorful, the team is warm, and the menu drifts happily from chicken-and-andouille gumbo to crispy suckling pig dressed in nuoc cham, a nod to Louisiana's Vietnamese community that lands exactly right. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, and lunch or dinner both work.

A po'boy shop that has been around forever, Parkway Bakery and Tavern earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand feeding the neighborhood from a sprawling, loud, indoor-outdoor room built for Saints games and serious eating. Regulars don't agonize over the list, they just order the Creole barbecue shrimp and get on with their afternoon.

BB's is a casual Cajun and Creole spot on Westheimer that keeps the kitchen going until 3 a.m. most nights and 4 a.m. on weekends, which tells you who its customers are. The menu splits the difference between New Orleans and Texas, with po'boys, fried seafood platters, and a seafood boil that arrives with enough vegetables to feel responsible about it. Daiquiris are the fuel. Wear whatever survived the evening.

This is a casino coffee shop at the South Point, the kind of 24-hour diner where the real menu starts after midnight. The graveyard specials are the draw: a shrimp cocktail for under three dollars, or a small steak with eggs, hash browns, and toast for around seven. Convention badges and rodeo hats share the booths at 2am, and you walk out full and still under fifteen bucks, which in Vegas is practically a clerical error.

A French-Cajun bistro built around a sub-basement that nobody knew existed until construction crews found it, two levels below the street with old stonework still intact. Deep-fried puri shells arrive golf-ball-size and hollow, packed with cool pimento cheese softened by sweet onion jam, and that alone explains why Tacoma's Grann has Seattle making the drive south. Crawfish cooked wok-style, the way you'd handle crab or lobster in Chinese cuisine, so every crevice gets a proper coating of spice and oil. This Cajun-Asian boil spot in southwest Houston does mudbugs in flavors like Thai Basil or a butter-garlic-citrus house special, and the heat scale runs up to something called Cray Cray, which should tell you all you need to know about who's ordering it.

Cajun & Creole Sandwich Shop
The bread comes from Leidenheimer, the legendary New Orleans bakery, which tells you most of what you need to know about this po'boy shop's priorities. Gulf seafood and roasted meats get stuffed into fresh baguettes with all the classic condiments, and a Thanksgiving Everyday option, turkey with cornbread stuffing and cranberry sauce, quietly steals the room. A bananas foster old-fashioned is on the cocktail list, because of course it is.

The crawfish come from the fields you can see from your table, which is either the most logical supply chain imaginable or a mild existential moment for the mudbugs. This BYOB boil house sits about an hour outside Houston, and the lines form by six, so early arrival is less a suggestion than a survival skill. Tours and boat excursions through the rice and crawfish fields are available if you call ahead. Order by the pound or go straight for the full feast.

Susan Spicer's Mid City neighborhood restaurant is the kind of place where the shrimp creole does all the talking. A casual Cajun and Creole spot, Rosedale keeps the cooking steeped in New Orleans tradition without any of the ceremony that follows a celebrated chef around town. The room is low-key, the food is direct, and the whole operation runs like it was built for the people on the block, not the people writing about it.

Rank 96. The Grapevine Bar
Cajun & Creole
A sign above the bathroom explicitly bans cocaine, which tells you most of what you need to know about The Grapevine's charms. This sprawling neighborhood bar and kitchen moved from its beloved pink adobe on Maple Avenue a couple years back, and the regulars followed, along with most of the staff. Strong drinks, plenty of outdoor space, boudin balls from the new kitchen, basketball on screens, and karaoke when the mood strikes.

Cajun & Creole
The plate-lunch spot that landed on the New York Times Restaurant List sits on Perkins Road, dishing out smothered chicken and meatless vegetable sides that taste like somebody's grandmother meant every bite. The chef learned to cook in Mississippi and has been running this kitchen for decades, splitting the difference, geographically and spiritually, between New Orleans and Lafayette. Go hungry and plan to eat with a spoon.

Cajun & Creole Cocktail Bar
The Elysian Bar is a cocktail bar in the Marigny, tucked inside a converted church-turned-hotel, where the atrium bar is so relentlessly yellow it feels like a secret study belonging to a pipe-smoking baron. Cajun and Creole small plates, like focaccia with honey butter, keep company with a Hibiscus 75. It's elegant without being stiff, and it made Food & Wine's list of top hotel bars in the country.
