The best brasseries in the United States, according to the experts: Eater, the James Beard Awards, and AAA have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Avery Restaurant comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Boise and Chicago.

More Less

White Horse Spirits & Kitchen and Le Suprême hold the next two places. Eater shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the Michelin Guide next.

  1. Avery is a hotel brasserie up front, with cassoulet and the white-tablecloth French the genre promises, plus a British-style pub out back that does shepherd's pie and Guinness. Both rooms run on old Brunswick bars, and the pub's is reportedly the oldest in Boise, so it has seen things. The chef is a James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Mountain, and Eater lists it among Boise's essentials.

  2. Le Suprême is a Parisian-style brasserie on the ground floor of the old Book Tower, which means you eat escargot under the kind of ceilings that make you sit up straighter. There's a seafood tower, a proper martini service, and traditional absinthe, so dress like someone with a reason to celebrate. The pastry kitchen sits behind glass in the lobby, and watching it work is a fine way to talk yourself into the profiteroles.

  3. Rank 4. Michele’s

    American Brasserie

Named after chef Matt Baker's late mother, this French-inflected American brasserie inside the Eaton Hotel leans hard into Baker's Houston and New Orleans roots. NOLA-style roasted oysters and crawfish linguine share the menu with smashburgers and Nashville hot chicken, which is either an identity crisis or a very good night out, depending on your mood. The room wears its hotel address lightly.

  4. Rank 4. Orsay

    Brasserie French

The art nouveau interior on Lexington feels genuinely transplanted from a Parisian side street, which is precisely the point of this French brasserie. The kitchen runs classic without apology: chicken liver mousse, artichaut vinaigrette, profiteroles. The room fills with Upper East Side regulars who know the staff by name and never glance at the menu. Unhurried and polished, it's the kind of brasserie that makes you want to order in courses and stay well past the reasonable hour.

  5. Beignets on the menu at a French-inflected steakhouse and cocktail bar inside a hotel co-owned by Nick Saban, which does make Alabama football feel like a lifestyle brand. The chef blends brasserie and steakhouse instincts, the cocktails are serious, and the wine list is curated rather than encyclopedic. Brunch runs just as dressed-up as dinner, so there's no casual way in.

  6. Rank 8. Deere Park

    American Brasserie

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
