The Best African Food in the United States

The best African food in the United States, according to the experts: The 50, the James Beard Awards, and USA Today have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Dakar NOLA comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Boston and Detroit.

More Less

Akadi PDX and ChòpnBlọk hold the next two places. Eater and the James Beard Awards show up on more of this list than any other guide.

  1. A personally signed welcome note from the chef arrives before the first course at this pescatarian tasting menu restaurant in Uptown, which pulls from the coastal cuisines of Senegal and South Louisiana in equal measure. West African masks line the walls, co-owner Afua Richardson works the room in spectacular fashion, and the kitchen holds a James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant. Seven courses, two seatings, and a cottage on Magazine Street.

  2. Rank 2. Akadi PDX

    Ivorian African

The housemade sauces, a tomato-ginger-carrot blend built on West African spices, are so compulsively dippable that chef Fatou Ouattara now bottles and sells them at local groceries. This lively Division Street restaurant draws from across the region: suya-spiced wings, tangy lamb dibi, okra goat stew, and several vegan stews with the same depth. The New York Times put it on their Portland list, and USA Today named it a Restaurant of the Year.

  3. Rank 3. ChòpnBlọk

    Fresh African

A fast-casual stall inside Houston's The Post food hall, ChòpnBlọk is the chef Ope Amosu's case for West African cooking as everyday food, not occasion food. Jollof rice, coconut curry bowls, and grilled suya skewers dusted in yaji peanut spice anchor the menu. The Michelin Bib Gourmand and a spot on the New York Times Restaurant List followed, which is a lot of attention for a rice bowl, and not undeserved.

  4. The namesake suya, smoky grilled meat with West African roots, gives this Roxbury restaurant its name and its personality. The menu runs from whole-fried snapper to okra soup with fufu to a peanut stew regulars quietly reorder every visit. The chef earned a James Beard semifinalist nod in 2024, which tracks for a neighborhood spot that has no business being this good and knows it.

  5. The awards

  6. Rank 6. Little Liberia

    Liberian African

Little Liberia is a Liberian sit-down restaurant on Detroit's east side, where the grill does most of the talking and the table fills up faster than anyone planned. Expect smoky shrimp, collards with bits of beef, a whole fried snapper, and cocktails that lean on tamarind and ginger. The room is quiet and gallery-like, with real art on the walls, so it suits a date for people who'd rather talk than watch a steak arrive.

  7. Rank 6. Yego Coffee

    Rwandan African Coffee Shop

  8. Fufu made from scratch and shito, the shrimp pepper sauce that shows up on nearly every table, are the signals that this is something Seattle doesn't have much of: a proper West African restaurant serving Ghanaian and Liberian cooking. The minimalist First Hill room fills fast with regulars who already know the goat peanut soup and newcomers working their way through peri peri wings and fried plantains for the first time.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
