The best Caribbean food in the United States, according to the experts: AAA, the James Beard Awards, and The 50 have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. kann comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in New York.

More Less

Kabawa and Dōgon by Kwame Onwuachi hold the next two places. Eater shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Infatuation next.

Eat, change section
  1. Rank 1. kann

    Caribbean

Gregory Gourdet won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant here, which tells you the industry noticed what he was doing with Haitian cuisine long before most diners caught up. Kann is a full-service restaurant where dishes like griyo and legim carry the weight of actual culinary history, not just a concept. The cooking draws on French technique and deep Haitian roots, and the menu quietly teaches you something without ever making you feel like you're in a lecture.

  2. Rank 2. Kabawa

    Caribbean

Paul Carmichael grew up in Barbados, and Kabawa is his argument that Caribbean cooking belongs in any room it wants. A prix-fixe fine dining restaurant on Extra Place, it seats you at a horseshoe counter in a dark green room with mosaic tilework and a playlist sourced partly from Carmichael's cousin back home. The New York Times named it the top restaurant in New York City, and the cocktail bar next door is his too, for nights when the goat patty feels like the right move.

  3. A chain-link curtain separates the Salamander hotel lobby from Kwame Onwuachi's Afro-Caribbean restaurant, which pulls from his Nigerian, Jamaican, Trinidadian, and Creole roots. The menu is built for sharing, with hoe crab served in the shell alongside plantain cakes, and a crispy lamb bowl that nods to Ben's Chili Bowl. It landed on North America's 50 Best Restaurants list, and the room fills like it knows.

  4. Rank 4. Tatiana

    Caribbean

Kwame Onwuachi named this pan-African Caribbean restaurant after his older sister, and it carries that kind of personal weight through every dish. Floor-to-ceiling windows wrap the dining room inside Lincoln Center, the kitchen is open, and the playlist runs hip-hop while oxtail arrives in a pot big enough to make a scene. It's fine dining without the hush. North America's 50 Best Restaurants lists it among its top 40.

  5. Rank 5. Compère Lapin

    New Orleans Caribbean

Curried goat over sweet potato gnocchi is the dish that quietly explains Nina Compton's whole project here. This Caribbean-inflected restaurant sits inside a converted coffee warehouse in the Warehouse Arts District, all exposed brick and mosaic tile, and the menu pulls together her St. Lucia roots, New Orleans flavors, and stints in Florida kitchens. The bar holds its own, and the service runs warm enough that a James Beard Outstanding Hospitality semifinalist nod makes a certain sense.

  6. A sea-foam green Victorian near downtown Eugene is an unlikely home for a West Indian rum bar, but here we are, and Oregon is better for it. Yardy started as a food truck and graduated to a cheerful brick-and-mortar where sorrel punch anchors the cocktail list and pholourie, fried chicken sandwiches, and twice-fried plantain jibaritos do the heavy lifting. A 2025 New York Times Restaurant List pick and a James Beard semifinalist.

  7. Rank 7. Canje

    Caribbean

Tavel Bristol-Joseph built his Austin reputation on pastry, so opening a modern Caribbean restaurant rooted in his Guyanese childhood was a genuine pivot. The cooking runs tangy, smoky, and coconutty, with fermented jerk seasoning and a roti that disappears faster than you'd expect. He earned a James Beard semifinalist nod, and the New York Times put Canje on its national restaurant list the year it opened.

  8. Rank 8. St. James

    Caribbean

A Caribbean restaurant named for the Port of Spain district that inspired it, St. James turns shared plates into a convivial argument for Trinidadian cooking. The space is modern and industrial with splashes of color, and the drinks lean hard on rum. The jerk brisket marinates for twelve hours before hitting the smoker, and the macaroni pie has developed a following of its own. The New York Times put it on their D.C. essential list, and Washingtonian ranked it nineteenth in the city.

  9. A roll of paper towels sits at the center of every table, and that tells you most of what you need to know about eating here. The Jerk Shack is a Caribbean spot in an industrial space west of downtown, with warehouse floors, high ceilings, and vivid art on the walls. The mixed plate of grilled jerk chicken and fried chicken is where to start. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and the chef was a James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Texas.

  10. Plants climb the walls beside murals of a fish and a rooster at this Venezuelan restaurant in Station North, where Latin music keeps the room from taking itself too seriously. The chef plates things like Caribbean scallops and stuffed arepas with a careful hand, and much of the menu skews gluten-free with strong vegan options. A James Beard semifinalist spot that Baltimore Magazine has landed on its best restaurants list.

  11. Rank 14. Mawa's Kitchen

    Afro Caribbean

Tucked into an airport business park (yes, really), this contemporary restaurant from a chef who grew up in Côte d'Ivoire brings West African-inflected cooking to a town that usually runs on truffle butter and expense accounts. Wildflower vases, bare tables, and a breezy terrace set an unfussy tone. The food follows: bold spicing, real technique, prices that don't assume you're on a ski-week budget. The chef was a James Beard semifinalist in 2022.

  12. Rank 15. NINE-TEN

    Caribbean

The dining room inside La Jolla's Grande Colonial Hotel is more beach-casual than grand, which suits a crowd that keeps sunglasses on through dinner. Nine-Ten is an elegant restaurant with a Caribbean lean, running from sandwiches and salads at lunch to a tasting menu at dinner that the kitchen calls "mercy of the chef." The pastry program punches above its hotel-restaurant weight, from brunch pastries through a creamsicle dessert worth the wait.

  13. Jerk chicken wings with pineapple curry sauce set the tone at this African-Caribbean fusion restaurant on Cerrillos Road, a casual, colorful room where the chef's roots on the Kenyan island of Lamu show up in every bowl and skewer. Goat stew in island curry, chicken curry over cumin-scented coconut rice, it all reads like a very specific passport. A Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard semifinalist nod confirm the kitchen punches above its strip-mall setting.

  14. Rank 17. Fritai

    Haitian

Pulled pork pressed between two fried plantains, dressed with mango sauce and pikliz, is a reasonable introduction to what this Treme restaurant is doing with Haitian cooking. Fritai is a bright, welcoming room where the Caribbean flavors run vivid and the bar leans on clairin, the Haitian cane spirit that most New Orleans cocktail menus haven't caught up to yet. A James Beard semifinalist two years running.

  16. Rank 19. Un Bien

    Caribbean

The Caribbean Roast sandwich at this casual counter shop has a dramatic backstory involving a lawsuit over the marinade recipe, which is exactly the kind of lore that follows a legendary pork shoulder around. The roll is from Macrina Bakery, the aioli is garlicky, the onions are caramelized into something slippery and sweet, and the slow-roasted pork does most of the talking. Seattle is not a sandwich town, but Un Bien keeps making the case that it could be.

  17. Rank 20. Bridgetown Roti

    American Caribbean

  18. The coco bread isn't on the menu, but regulars know to ask for a hunk of it to sop up the oxtail braised in brown sauce. This no-frills Jamaican lunch counter has been an old-school institution in Miami for decades, turning out clamshell containers of curry goat, jerk chicken, and flaky beef patties to a lunchtime crowd that doesn't linger. The New York Times put it on their Miami list.

  19. The buss up shut here is the size of a shirt and flaky as a biscuit, which the name, Trinidadian slang for "busted up shirt," promises and the kitchen delivers. This is a roti shop in South Ozone Park, cash and carry, no fuss. The New York Times put it on their 100 Best list, and the A train ride plus the half-mile walk from the station is apparently just part of the ritual now.

  20. Rank 26. Queen Trini Lisa

    Trinbagonian Caribbean

Doubles, the Trinidadian street snack of curried chickpeas on soft flatbread, landed in New Orleans largely because of this sunny Mid-City cafe. Chef-owner Lisa Nelson runs a compact menu of Trinbagonian cooking in a room that feels like it's been around forever. The fried fish on coco bread with plantains and hot sauce makes a strong case for the city's sandwich conversation. A neighborhood spot where you order at the counter and eat slowly.

  21. Rank 26. Un Bien

    Caribbean

The Caribbean Roast at this casual sandwich counter has a whole legal backstory involving a disputed marinade recipe, which is either reassuring or alarming depending on your feelings about intellectual property. The sandwich itself is pork shoulder slow-roasted into slippery, citrus-kissed hunks, piled onto a Macrina roll with garlic aioli, pickled jalapeños, caramelized onions, and cilantro. Seattle's most fought-over lunch.

  22. Rank 28. Cane

    Trinidadian

A photo of Obama eating a double hangs on the wall, which tells you almost everything about this small, pastel-colored Trinidadian street food spot on H Street. The menu is a love letter to Port of Spain, running through rich stews, channa, and pepperpot fragrant with cinnamon. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and landed on the New York Times Restaurant List, and the lines make sense.

  23. Roosters wander the courtyard of this beloved all-day Key West diner, which tells you something about the vibe before you've even sat down. The menu leans into Caribbean flavors with a strong seafood pull, and the Key lime pie, piled with baked meringue, has its own gravitational field. A line out front is standard operating procedure, so order a drink and watch the chickens.

  24. Rank 30. Twin Isle

    Caribbean

The pepper sauce question is your first test: they ask at the counter, you say yes, and then you find out. Twin Isle is a fast-casual Caribbean spot on Rosewood serving oxtail fries, doubles, jerk chicken, and rice and peas from a team with roots at Shirley's Trini Cuisine. The neighborhood keeps getting smoother around it, but this place stays sharp, bright, and legitimately incendiary if you're not careful with that sauce.

  25. Rank 31. Lenox

    Caribbean

The lechon arrives as a pinwheel of pork with skin so shatteringly crisp it sounds like a problem. Lenox is a Caribbean restaurant in Belltown doing Nuyorican cooking with palm-print wallpaper, rattan fixtures, and a rum-heavy cocktail list that leans hard into the beach-bar premise. The spice mixes are made in-house, the piña coladas get poured generously, and Bon Appétit named it one of America's Best New Restaurants in 2025.

  26. You order at the counter, and they hand back your number on a playing card. Little Chango is a casual Caribbean street food counter in a cheerful yellow building, turning out arepas stuffed with ropa vieja and rice-and-meat lunch boxes. The sides are where things get interesting: Puerto Rican-style mamposteao, a bright escabeche with avocado and pickled onion. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a spot this low-key and this good.

  27. The mini cheese empanadas arrive flaky outside and molten within, and the sampler plate is basically the menu's argument for ordering one of everything. Mayo Ketchup is a casual Puerto Rican and Dominican spot on Olive Street where the tostones come topped with avocado and pickled onion, the taquenos are cheese pulled through pastry dough, and the sauces range from guava to herbaceous cilantro. A good place to lose track of time deciding what to eat next.

  28. Rank 34. Coconuts

    Caribbean

The jerk chicken here shares DNA with Back A Yard, the fast-casual chain from the same restaurateur, but Coconuts wraps it in full table service and a proper rum bar. The Caribbean cooking is straightforward and confident: oxtail braised until the meat gives up completely, chicken slathered in allspice-forward seasoning. The room is colorful in the literal sense, which on a gray Peninsula afternoon feels less like a design choice and more like a public service.

  29. B & M is a Caribbean grocery where the restaurant is wherever the chef happens to be, which is the kitchen at the back. You walk past the shelves, lean in, and tell her what you want, and she returns with oxtail or curry goat over rice and peas, or wrapped in a roti. Cow foot soup turns up some days. 30. Ali's is a counter-service roti shop on Fulton where the menu runs from conch to liver to curry goat, all folded into dhalpuri, the soft split-pea flatbread that does the heavy lifting. Formica tables, reggae on the speakers, and glam servers navigating the brightly colored booths: Miss Lily's is a lively Jamaican restaurant on Avenue A that makes the case for Caribbean food without any downtown hedging. It's a sit-down dinner spot, fun but not casual, the kind of room that makes you want to linger over braised oxtail with a group of friends. The Michelin Guide has had its eye on it, and the crowd that fills the booths on a weekend night suggests they're not the only ones paying attention.

  53. A pop-up food stand rooted in two traditions, Liberian and Jamaican, that the co-owner grew up eating. The menu built around jerk chicken wings and jollof rice draws long lines wherever it lands, whether that's the downtown farmers market every other week or the sprawling Ragbrai bike ride across the state. In Iowa, in February, the smell of jerk spice doing its work is a reasonable argument for following a food stand around like a grateful stray.

  54. Rank 56. Que Chevere

    Venezuelan Caribbean

Thick griddled corn arepas, stuffed or served alongside shredded beef and rice, are the spine of this Venezuelan Caribbean restaurant in downtown Mesa. The team graduated from a food truck to a brick-and-mortar, and the kitchen still rolls out hot cheese sticks every morning. 59. Rank 68. Coquito

    Caribbean

The little neon sign out front is easy to miss, but the Kelly green interior and relic-inspired decor make up for it fast. Coquito is a Latin fusion cafe on East Seventh that runs a day-to-night double life: cold brew spiked with coquito and tortas by afternoon, DJs and a packed dance floor after dark. The name comes from Puerto Rico's traditional Christmas drink, which tells you something about the warmth of the place in general.

  60. The ceiling is scattered with tiny lights, so dinner at this jazz supper club feels like eating under the stars, which makes the Afro-Caribbean small plates feel even more theatrical than they already are. JJ Johnson, a James Beard Award winner, brought the menu to life in 2024, leaning into jerk chicken and salmon croquettes while live jazz fills the room. Reservations come with a ticket, so book ahead.

  61. Rank 69. Guiso Latin Fusion

    Salvadoran Caribbean

The guiso sauce, a peppery family recipe passed down from the chef's grandmother, shows up across the menu at this Salvadoran and Caribbean restaurant in downtown Healdsburg. It's casual but serious, the kind of upscale Latin spot where the staff hug regulars and explain the story behind every dish. 65. Rank 69. Mamajuana Cafe Houston

    Pan-Latin Caribbean

Downtown Houston tends to roll up the sidewalks after five, which makes a Latin restaurant serving until 2 a.m. on Thursday through Saturday feel like a minor act of defiance. The menu wanders the Caribbean and South America, from stuffed plantains to stewed oxtail to churrasco, and the cocktails run toward a spicy-tequila margarita and a creamy, rum-laced take on a Dominican classic. Expect a mid-priced, dress-up-a-little night out.

  71. The jerk seasoning hits you before you've placed your order at the counter, which tells you most of what you need to know about Ms. Martha's Caribbean Kitchen. A working organic farm on the Des Moines outskirts that opens for lunch when the growing season says so, run by a pair of medical professionals who started it decades ago to push healthier farming in their community. The food draws on Guyanese home cooking, the ingredients change with what's in the ground, and the New York Times flagged a sampler plate here among its best dishes eaten across the country in 2025.

  76. The smell of jerk chicken charring over fire hits you before you reach the door, which is all the orientation you need. Cool Vybz is a no-frills Jamaican spot on the north side of Phoenix, the dining room strictly functional, the cooking anything but. The chef came up on the island and keeps the menu short: curry goat, oxtails, brown stew snapper. Phoenix New Times named it the city's top Caribbean restaurant in 2024, and the jerk alone makes a reasonable argument for why.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
