The 100 Best Restaurants in the United States

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best restaurants in the United States, according to the experts: AAA, The 50, and the Michelin Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Atomix comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in New York.

More Less

Jungsik New York and Quince hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with AAA next.

  1. A 14-seat counter in a Murray Hill brownstone basement, where each course of a modern Korean tasting menu arrives in bespoke ceramics with a card explaining its origins. The exterior is so understated that first-timers cluster on the sidewalk wondering if they have the right address. Two Michelin stars, a James Beard Award, and a spot at number twelve on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list suggest they do.

  2. The Dolhareubang dessert, a miniature Jeju Island stone figure set in a traditional garden of toasted rice ice cream and black bean mousse, tells you exactly where you are: a tasting menu restaurant where Korean culinary tradition gets remade from the ground up. The Tribeca dining room is muted and minimal, which lets the nine courses do the talking. Three Michelin stars, a James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef, and a spot on North America's 50 Best.

  3. Rank 3. Quince

    Californian

The dining room was overhauled in fawn and sage, the ceilings soar, and there is velvet, which tells you exactly what kind of evening you're walking into. Quince is a tasting-menu restaurant in Jackson Square where the kitchen draws heavily from its own farm, and the chef holds three Michelin stars and a James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef. Service runs seamlessly without tipping into ceremony, which at this level is the harder trick.

  4. The open kitchen anchors a lounge-like room in Chicago's West Loop, and what comes out of it has earned Smyth three Michelin stars and the top spot on North America's 50 Best list. The tasting menu leans on Midwest seasons and a farm garden, but the cooking is genuinely strange in the best way: foie gras doughnuts, kelp tarts, lobster custard with raspberry butter. Strange enough that you stop second-guessing the kitchen about halfway through.

  5. The menu arrives as a poem, literally, and the meal that follows is Dominique Crenn's three-Michelin-star argument that fine dining and a pescatarian kitchen are not in tension. The eight-table room in Cow Hollow is filled with her father's artwork and family photos, and the tasting menu works through seafood and produce with French technique and a modernist's sense of play. Forbes Five Star as well, if you needed the coordinates.

  6. The opening course arrives as a sculptural hillock of moss and wildflowers with raw fish and farm produce nestled inside it, which tells you almost everything about what follows. This is a three-Michelin-star kaiseki-influenced tasting menu in Sonoma wine country, built around a 24-acre farm run by the chef's wife. Japan meets Northern California across ten courses, with the kitchen's donabe work a quiet obsession. It holds a Forbes Five Star and a spot on the World's 50 Best list.

  7. Inside the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, with arched windows framing the canyon and a glass wine cellar standing in the center of the dining room like a statement of intent, Addison is the kind of California fine dining room that makes other fine dining rooms feel like they're still figuring it out. William Bradley holds three Michelin stars and a Forbes Five Star, and his tasting menu moves from chicken liver churros to caviar-crowned rice with a confidence that is, frankly, a little disarming.

  8. Rank 8. Benu

    Pan-Asian

A courtyard full of earthenware crocks, each housing a different fermentation experiment, is how Corey Lee introduces himself before you've touched a menu. Benu is a tasting menu restaurant in SoMa holding three Michelin stars, and the dining room's monastic quiet makes the food's color and technical audacity land harder. Lee's Korean roots fold into California's pantry across a long, ever-changing progression where restraint does more work than flash.

  9. Rank 9. Albi

    Live-Fire Palestinian

Everything at this Palestinian live-fire restaurant in Navy Yard passes through a roaring open hearth before it reaches the table, and the renovated dining room leaves the kitchen's fire in full view. Michael Rafidi, a James Beard Outstanding Chef winner with a Michelin star, draws on his family's Ramallah roots while working with mid-Atlantic seasons. The tasting menu is the move, though the wood-fired lamb pies and hummus hold their own à la carte.

  10. Daniel Humm's tasting menu restaurant occupies a grand Art Deco dining room on Madison Square Park, where everything from the staff's suits to the water vases is custom made. The kitchen went plant-based a few years back, which caused a minor citywide meltdown, and the menu has been quietly winning people over since. Three Michelin stars, a Forbes Five Star, and an AAA Five Diamond.

  11. You arrive through a converted freight elevator in what used to be a warehouse, which sets the tone before you've touched a menu. Oriole is a tasting-menu restaurant where the chef blends French and Japanese ideas into something that reads as neither, with polished service that somehow avoids feeling stiff. It holds two Michelin stars and a James Beard Award, and the room earns both the ceiling collage and the hushed reverence of everyone in it.

  12. Thomas Keller's fine dining landmark in Yountville, where the ceiling lines and counter heights are as considered as what lands on the plate. The menu moves through classic French technique with California produce, tasting-course style, in a room that takes the whole thing very seriously. Three Michelin stars, Forbes Five Star, and AAA Five Diamonds. Getting a reservation is its own project, which tells you something.

  13. The dining room looks out over Central Park and is quiet enough that you can actually hear your table talk, which at these prices seems like the least they could do. Thomas Keller's tasting menu restaurant holds three Michelin stars, a Forbes Five Star, and an AAA Five Diamond, and the kitchen earns them through classical French technique that shifts with the seasons. Service is warm without being stiff, which takes more skill than the food does.

  14. Friuli Venezia Giulia is not the corner of Italy most chefs are racing to cook, which is exactly what makes this fine dining room on Pearl Street worth paying attention to. The Michelin-starred kitchen leans into the region's Slavic and Alpine edges, turning up in unusual pastas and unexpected pairings, while a master sommelier runs one of the more serious wine programs in the state. The James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurant landed in 2025.

  15. A personally signed welcome note from the chef arrives before the first course at this pescatarian tasting menu restaurant in Uptown, which pulls from the coastal cuisines of Senegal and South Louisiana in equal measure. West African masks line the walls, co-owner Afua Richardson works the room in spectacular fashion, and the kitchen holds a James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant. Seven courses, two seatings, and a cottage on Magazine Street.

  16. Rank 16. Somni

    Spanish

A rainbow bull's head salvaged from the original location watches over the 14-seat counter like a totem, and that detail tells you everything about the mood here. Somni is a Spanish creative tasting menu in a converted bungalow just off Santa Monica, with three Michelin stars and a courtyard that feels like it was designed inside a dream. The chef trained at El Bulli, and the cooking lands accordingly: intricate, theatrical, and dead serious about having fun.

  17. Servers arrive tableside with trays of heirloom corn varieties and raw mole ingredients before a single plate lands, which tells you exactly the kind of evening this is going to be. Californios is a two-Michelin-star tasting menu restaurant where Val Cantú runs Mexican culinary tradition through fine dining without flattening either one. The room is enormous and nearly black, more concert hall than chapel, and the 14 courses move from masa to mole to dessert without feeling like a lecture.

  18. A chariot of mignardise rolled tableside signals the close of dinner at this two-Michelin-star French contemporary room inside the MGM Grand, which trades casino noise for aubergine velvet, gilded accents, and deep carpet underfoot. The cooking runs through contemporary French with global detours, the wine list holds a Wine Enthusiast Hall of Fame nod, and the AAA Five Diamond sits quietly on the wall. Dress accordingly, and clear the evening.

  19. Rank 19. Semma

    Indian

The gunpowder dosa lands on every table for a reason: it's a crispy rice-and-lentil crepe packed with spicy potato masala, and it arrives with the quiet confidence of a dish that has nothing to prove. This south Indian restaurant in the West Village holds a Michelin star and a James Beard Award, and the kitchen earns both by ignoring what American diners supposedly expect. The wood-paneled room is small and loud in the best way, and reservations go fast.

  20. Dessert ends with a nitro-fueled splatter painting made directly on your table, which tells you everything you need to know about the vibe here. Grant Achatz's flagship is a modernist fine dining tasting menu where scented vapors, hidden ingredients, and tableside theater run all night. It holds two Michelin stars, a Forbes Five Star, and an AAA Five Diamond. Wear something you won't mind sitting in for three hours; standing up is optional, but awe is not.

  21. Rank 21. Emeril's

    Cajun & Creole

EJ Lagasse took over his father's legendary Warehouse District fine-dining room at 22, after stints at Frantzén and Core by Clare Smyth, and now holds two Michelin stars. The tasting menu threads Creole classics through a contemporary lens, BBQ shrimp tarts and deep-flavored gumbo alongside smoked salmon cheesecake. Floor-to-ceiling glass frames the kitchen like a stage, and the service team plays the room with genuine warmth. Emeril's, basically reinvented.

  22. Rank 22. Enclos

    Californian

A Victorian house steps from Sonoma Plaza conceals one of the more quietly ambitious tasting menus in Northern California. Chef Brian Limoges runs a multi-course fine dining experience that filters his New England upbringing through local ingredients, including produce from an affiliated farm nearby. A clam chawanmushi winks at chowder without belaboring the point. Two Michelin stars, earned fast.

  23. Rank 23. Kalaya

    Southern Thai

A skylit Fishtown warehouse with pistachio-green bar, rattan furniture, and colossal potted palms sets the scene for chef Nok Suntaranon's Southern Thai restaurant, a James Beard Outstanding Restaurant winner. The food makes a case that Thai cuisine belongs nowhere near a takeaway box: bird-shaped dumplings hide caramelized cod, and the tamarind-glazed pork chop has genuine chophouse swagger. Reservations are hard to get even after the place quintupled in size.

  24. Patrick O'Connell's maximalist dining room in a tiny Virginia village has held two Michelin stars, a Forbes Five Star, and AAA Five Diamonds long enough that the town itself seems to exist around it. Fine dining from another era, in the best possible sense: roaming bread and cheese carts, stately grandeur, and a menu that takes its time. The kind of dinner where you dress up and mean it.

  25. Jean-Georges Vongerichten has been running this French tasting room at the Trump International for close to three decades, and the kitchen still moves like it has something to prove. By day, floor-to-ceiling windows flood the room with Central Park light; by night, a chandelier of jellyfish-shade globes goes soft and dreamlike. The mignardises cart arrives at the end with an almost ceremonial air. Two Michelin stars, a Forbes Five Star, and AAA Five Diamonds.

  26. Its own valet entrance off the Augustus Tower means you never have to walk through a casino to get here, which tells you something about how seriously this French fine dining room takes itself. Guy Savoy holds a Forbes Five Star and AAA Five Diamonds, and the tasting menu reads like a greatest-hits of the Paris original: artichoke and black truffle soup, seared foie gras, oyster. Romantic, modern, not remotely stuffy.

  27. Rank 27. Meju

    Korean

The chef's counter hides behind a banchan shop in Long Island City, which tells you everything about its priorities. Hooni Kim, a James Beard Award winner with a Michelin star, has spent years wild-fermenting and aging the Korean pantry staples, doenjang, ganjang, gochujang, that anchor his tasting menu. Dishes arrive looking almost spare, then insist on your full attention. The meal closes with a bowl of rice and kimchi that sounds like nothing and lands like a lot.

  28. Wood-paneled walls and an open kitchen that puts the chefs on something like a stage set the scene at this Mission District tasting menu restaurant, where Harrison Cheney runs a Nordic-inflected program on Californian ingredients. Ferments, pickles, and smoked things do a lot of the work alongside hyper-seasonal produce. It holds two Michelin stars and a spot on North America's 50 Best list at number 45.

  29. The Bar Room sits inside MoMA, which means the view from your table includes a sculpture garden and whatever guilt you feel about skipping the actual galleries. This is fine dining with two Michelin stars and an AAA Five Diamond, but the mood is closer to "very grown-up lunch" than tasting-menu theater. Chef Thomas Allan's food is seasonal and lightly composed, familiar enough to read fast and precise enough to hold your attention.

  30. Rank 30. Aquavit

    Sustainable Nordic

Bread arrives as a dense, seed-studded round of fresh rye, and that commitment to doing the Nordic thing properly runs through every course of Aquavit's tasting menu. Emma Bengtsson grew up in a Swedish fishing village, and the kitchen reflects it, precise and abundant rather than austere. Two Michelin stars and an AAA Five Diamond make the case before you even sit down. Midtown, jackets optional but effort appreciated.

  31. Rank 31. Atlas

    Modern American

Rotating gallery installations line the walls of this fine dining room inside the St. Regis, turning dinner into a mild competition between the food and the art. Chef Freddy Money runs a seasonal New American menu with European leanings, and the kitchen holds a Michelin star, a Forbes Five Star, and AAA Five Diamonds. The cheese cart and zero-proof cocktails signal a team that enjoys the longer format.

  32. The building was a church before it became one of San Francisco's finest Italian dining rooms, and the solemn A-frame ceiling still sets the mood: white linens, mellow jazz, sommeliers who treat the cellar like a calling. Then the food arrives and the whole genteel setup gets quietly subverted. Suzette Gresham holds two Michelin stars, and her kitchen pairs French-trained sauce work with Italian soul and a surprisingly playful hand.

  33. Porcelain chandeliers from Bernardaud hang over coffered ceilings alongside James Rosenquist canvases, which tells you something about how seriously Daniel Boulud's Upper East Side flagship takes the room. This is classic New York fine dining, the kind where deals get brokered and anniversaries get marked. The multicourse French tasting menus hold a Michelin star, a Forbes Five Star, and an AAA Five Diamond.

  35. Rank 35. Mixtli

    Mexican

Each tasting menu here is built around a different region or era of Mexican cuisine, so the kitchen might be cooking through Oaxacan traditions one month and pre-Columbian ingredients the next. Mixtli is a fine dining restaurant holding a Michelin star and an AAA Five Diamond, and it's the kind of place where the food has a thesis. The team treats Mexico's culinary geography like a curriculum, and somehow the results are as delicious as they are cerebral.

  36. Rank 36. Aubergine

    Californian

A tasting menu restaurant tucked inside a Carmel inn, Aubergine holds two Michelin stars and a Forbes Five Star, and the room earns all the quiet confidence that implies. Chef Justin Cogley's cooking is rooted in place, the coast and its ingredients showing up in precise, unhurried courses. The sommeliers seem to genuinely enjoy their job, which, given the wine list, makes sense. Dress nicely; the other guests certainly did.

  37. The kitchen runs down the center of the room at this Ukrainian Village tasting menu spot, so you watch the whole production up close. The team sources almost everything from within a four-hour drive and tends to run a single ingredient through several preparations in one meal. On nice nights the backyard fire pit opens, with sour cherry trees visible overhead and, predictably, sour cherries on the menu. It holds a Michelin star and a James Beard Award.

  38. Checkerboard floors, mustard velvet banquettes, and stained glass windows set the scene at this cozy Rittenhouse townhouse, where the eight-course tasting menu weaves classic French technique through ingredients and ideas from the African diaspora. The coconut, the plantain, the frothy sauce mopped up with Caribbean coco bread: it reads like a résumé with a point of view. A James Beard Outstanding Restaurant winner and Michelin-starred, with a bar upstairs that earned its own Beard nomination.

  39. Rank 39. Caruso’s

    Californian Italian

The dining room faces the Pacific at the Rosewood Miramar Beach, which sets up certain expectations that the kitchen then politely ignores in favor of a serious Italian-leaning prix-fixe. Chef Massimo Falsini pulls Santa Barbara uni from a local diver and produce from an onsite garden, and the cooking earns both a Michelin star and a Forbes Five Star. Dress accordingly and book early; the leather booths fill with people who planned ahead.

  40. Tucked into a 30-seat room inside Phuket Cafe, Langbaan runs themed multi-course Thai dinners built around a specific region or historical period, a different framework each seating. The menu says five courses; chef Earl Nissom sends out more than twelve. It took the James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurant in 2024. The sommelier is often on the floor to talk through the wine pairings, which, given the food, is a conversation worth having.

  41. Freshly pulled radishes arrive with browned butter before you've looked at a menu, which tells you everything about what Dan Barber is doing at this two-Michelin-starred tasting room on a working farm in the Hudson Valley. The procession that follows is theatrical and farm-obsessed, rooted in whatever the land is doing right now. Crisped linens, fine crystal, and a meal that could end with a tower of milk desserts, because the farm started as a dairy.

  42. Rank 42. Holbox

    Mexican

Named for a Caribbean island off the Yucatán coast, this Michelin-starred coastal Mexican seafood counter sits inside Mercado La Paloma in South Central, sharing the space with six other vendors and no liquor license, so lemonade it is. The chef grew up spearing fish on that same peninsula, and the ceviches, aguachiles, and grilled lobster on heirloom corn tortillas taste like it. North America's 50 Best lists it at number 26.

  43. James Syhabout's two-Michelin-star tasting menu restaurant on Piedmont Avenue runs calm and unhurried, which is its own kind of trick on a street that packed. The room is long and spare, servers wear ties and crumb your table, and the food draws quietly on his Thai and Chinese heritage without announcing it. That slow-poached egg yolk has become a regular's religion. Cool and relaxed, but never, as the room itself seems to know, actually casual.

  44. Rank 44. Galit

    Middle Eastern

The hummus arrives first, topped with brisket, alongside salatim and pita still warm from the flame, which is a good sign of what's coming. Galit is a prix-fixe modern Middle Eastern spot on Lincoln Ave, holding a Michelin star, where chef Zach Engel builds a menu that feels personal rather than encyclopedic. The wine list leans into Armenia, Lebanon, and Palestine, so the pairings have something to say.

  45. Rank 45. Gramercy Tavern

    Contemporary American

The room divides in two: a buzzy front Tavern with bar seats and an à la carte menu, and a quieter Dining Room behind it running a prix-fixe. Both are fine dining by any sane measure, just at different volumes. The seasonal contemporary American menu leans on local produce with French technique behind it. Gramercy holds a Michelin star and a spot on North America's 50 Best. Danny Meyer's flagship, been around forever, and still the restaurant half of New York uses to impress the other half.

  46. A U-shaped counter on the fifth floor where the cooks work close enough that you can watch them sweat, and they know it. The Catbird Seat is a tasting menu restaurant that has cycled through several chefs over the years without losing its grip on Nashville's imagination. The current husband-and-wife team leans into smoking, grilling, and preservation in ways that feel restless rather than studied. It holds a Michelin star.

  47. Karyn Tomlinson won a James Beard Award for the cooking she does here, which should tell you something. Myriel is a small-plates tasting spot in St. Paul where the menu changes often enough that nothing is posted online, which forces a pleasant kind of surrender. The room runs cream and sand with European bones, cozy but pulled-together. Tomlinson is also known for her pastry work, so if apple pie is on that night, the answer is yes.

  48. Windowless, walk-in only, and usually packed, this South Philly izakaya earned a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic and a Michelin Bib Gourmand without ever taking a reservation. The menu roams confidently from raw to fried to grilled, cod skin crisped to a chip, chirashi bowls stacked with caviar and ikura. Regulars who know the right people find their way to the omakase counter tucked in the back, which is its own argument for becoming a regular.

  49. A binchotan grill, a wood-fired oven, a fermentation program, and a garden out back: the kitchen here builds its multicourse tasting menus from the ground up, milling its own grains and composting its own pretensions into something genuinely novel. The cooking pulls from Chiang Mai, Mexico, and Colorado without really belonging to any of them. Two Michelin stars. The beverage program matches the ambition, cocktails and all.

  50. Rank 50. Kiln

    Modern Nordic

Hip-hop rattles through a spare warehouse space while tattooed cooks walk each course to the table, and that tension is the whole point of Kiln. Chef John Wesley runs a two-and-a-half-hour tasting menu that leans Nordic, leaning hard on curing, fermentation, and drying, though France and Japan show up too. It holds two Michelin stars, and the room, white tablecloths and all, takes absolutely none of that seriously.

  51. A black bungalow in downtown Phoenix that turns out northern Thai food rooted in Chiang Rai, where the chef grew up cooking alongside her mother and grandmother. The menu is built to share, the flavors run deep, and the cocktails are doing interesting things with fish sauce and fresh coconut cream. Yotaka Martin took the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest in 2025, which in Phoenix is basically a neighborhood fact at this point.

  52. Rank 52. kann

    Caribbean

Gregory Gourdet won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant here, which tells you the industry noticed what he was doing with Haitian cuisine long before most diners caught up. Kann is a full-service restaurant where dishes like griyo and legim carry the weight of actual culinary history, not just a concept. The cooking draws on French technique and deep Haitian roots, and the menu quietly teaches you something without ever making you feel like you're in a lecture.

  53. The kitchen grows much of what it serves, pulling from an orchard, edible flower fields, vegetable gardens, and an apiary right on the Justin Winery property. This is a single tasting menu, fine dining, the kind where rolling vineyards fill every window and the service feels like a coordinated act of kindness. It holds a Michelin star, a Forbes Five Star, and an AAA Five Diamond, which is a lot of hardware for one set of winding roads to carry.

  54. A former prune packing plant in Geyserville, now a Michelin-starred, AAA Five Diamond tasting-menu destination designed by Olson Kundig in concrete and glass. Douglas Keane runs dinner as a kind of wandering cocktail party: canapés in the lounge, a stint in the open kitchen, substantial courses in the dining room, and finally a chocolate waterfall room with the Willy Wonka soundtrack, because apparently that's where fine dining goes now.

  55. Rank 55. Aska

    New Nordic

Black tablecloths, candlelight, and a deer skull resting on a bed of lichen: Fredrik Berselius runs a tasting menu restaurant in South Williamsburg that feels less like dinner and more like being guided through a dark forest by something polite but feral. The cooking is New Nordic in spirit, pulling from Northeastern seasonality, and it holds two Michelin stars and a spot on North America's 50 Best. Wear something dark; you'll blend right in.

  56. The counter wraps the open kitchen in red and black, so you're essentially eating at the pass, watching every plate come together. This is Joël Robuchon's casual-ish fine dining concept inside the MGM Grand, a Michelin-starred French tasting menu room where the pommes purée alone has a kind of cult following. The tasting menu is the move; à la carte exists, but feels like skipping the point.

  57. The whole room gets served at once, and each dish gets announced to everyone, which sounds like a dinner party because that's exactly what it is. Her Place is a tasting menu supper club from chef Amanda Shulman, with a Michelin star and a rotating multicourse menu that shifts every two weeks, leaning French and Italian without being stiff about it. The vibe is warm and communal; the cooking, technically sharp.

  58. Lipstick-red banquettes, dark wood, and linen-draped tables so close together that you'll know your neighbor's business by dessert. This old-school Upper East Side bistro ran for decades, went dark, and came roaring back under the chefs behind Balthazar, this time with a prix-fixe menu of reverent French classics. It landed on North America's 50 Best Restaurants and took a James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur in 2025. The frogs' legs got a shout from the Times.

  59. Rank 59. Harbor House Inn

    Contemporary Japanese

The lace lichen gets plucked from overhanging trees on the Mendocino coast and ends up on your plate, which tells you most of what you need to know about this two-Michelin-star tasting menu perched above the Pacific in Elk. Matthew Kammerer's cooking runs Japanese-accented and hyper-local, with sea urchin and foraged seaweed doing the heavy lifting. The sourdough is flecked with sea lettuce, and the drive out here, genuinely remote, is part of the whole production.

    Vietnamese

A muffuletta reimagined as a rice-noodle dish tells you pretty much everything about what Kevin Tien is doing at this modern Vietnamese restaurant in Penn Quarter. His Louisiana upbringing and Vietnamese heritage push and pull at each other in ways that somehow feel inevitable rather than forced. Pastry chef Susan Bae won North America's Best Pastry Chef Award, and her desserts make seaweed and green curry sound like obvious choices. It landed at #24 on North America's 50 Best Restaurants.

    Californian Mexican

The kitchen is fully visible behind glass, so you can watch the team plate while you sit in a tasting room that looks out over the northern Napa hills. This is fine dining inside the Four Seasons Calistoga, with a Californian menu that threads a Mexican influence through Wine Country produce, garden herbs, wagyu, crudo, masa. It holds a Michelin star and AAA Five Diamonds, and the James Beard committee has noticed the chef.

Stone walls, Warhol-esque prints, and servers who greet you before you've touched the door handle: Fiola is a tasting-menu Italian on Pennsylvania Avenue where Fabio Trabocchi's kitchen treats pasta scraps as an occasion for caviar and sea urchin. Modern Soul Food

The elevator deposits you on the 63rd floor of a landmark skyscraper before you've had time to rehearse an expression for the view. Saga is a fine-dining tasting menu restaurant with two Michelin stars and velvet banquettes to match the ambition. Charlie Mitchell's cooking runs soul-food maximalism through Japanese minimalism, producing bites that read delicate and land heavy. The Moroccan tea service closing the meal is a quiet house tradition worth knowing about.

  64. Ice cream mid-savory-course is either a provocation or a mistake, and at Dave Beran's Seline it's very much the former. This is a high-concept California tasting menu built around themes like the arc of the seasons, where a miniature garden of edible succulents arrives before lamb with burnt strawberry jus. Beran holds a James Beard Award for Best Chef: California, and the room earns the attention it gets.

The counter itself is unusually generous for this format, so the immersive part doesn't mean elbowing a stranger all night.

  68. A tasting counter tucked into the back of a Hell's Kitchen grocery store, which is either the most New York thing imaginable or a deliberate joke on fine dining's self-seriousness. Guests wrap around a glossy walnut counter while a full brigade cooks inches away with nowhere to hide. The kitchen sends out precise, delicate bites in quick succession. Two Michelin stars and an AAA Five Diamond award.

  69. Rank 68. minibar by José Andrés

    Avant-Garde Spanish

A curved counter wrapping a stainless-steel workspace is where dinner happens at José Andrés's avant-garde tasting room, a two Michelin star, AAA Five Diamond operation that takes the small-bites format seriously enough to earn the credentials. Nothing on the menu looks like what it turns out to be, which is either thrilling or unsettling depending on your relationship with surprise. Sharply suited servers keep the whole production moving with warmth rather than ceremony.

  70. A gallery wall of staff family portraits lines the interior, and a lime green bar anchors the room where church pews run along the walls. Named for the chef's grandmother, this Temescal soul food restaurant riffs on tradition with genuine curiosity: collards seasoned with berbere, fried chicken brined with pickle juice, a wine list that quietly suggests champagne as the correct pairing. Food & Wine named it Restaurant of the Year in 2024.

  71. Rank 71. Tatemó

    Mexican

The sign outside belongs to a doughnut shop, which tells you everything about the neighborhood and nothing about what's inside. Tatemó is a BYOB tasting menu built around heirloom corn from across Mexico, and it holds a Michelin star. The chef turns masa into something you'd describe to people for weeks: a black mole so dark it needs its own tortilla, made from nixtamalized plantain, to make the point land.

  72. Rank 72. Mita

    Latin American

Plant-based Peruvian tasting menus in Shaw sounds like a premise that requires a disclaimer, yet Mita holds a Michelin star and a James Beard nomination for Best New Restaurant. The chef's team pulls from across Latin America, so the flavors run from Andean to coastal without apology. Two tasting menu lengths mean you can commit at whatever level feels reasonable on a Tuesday. The bar program is serious enough that Punch named the team among its best new bartenders.

  77. Rank 77. Cariño

The CTA rumbles overhead while the chef rattles off ingredients like an auctioneer building to a close. This intimate Uptown tasting menu spins Mexican cuisine through a restless, personal lens, moving from "chips and salsa" rendered as salsa verde jelly and tortilla crumble to a lamb tartare tostada seasoned al pastor-style. Counter seats put you close enough to watch the small team work. It holds a Michelin star and landed on the New York Times Restaurant List for 2025.

  78. Rank 78. Vern's

    American

Candlelit tables on rich wood floors, a short menu that shifts with the seasons, and a wine list that the front-of-house half of the husband-and-wife team clearly thinks about hard. Vern's is a relaxed neighborhood restaurant with a Michelin star and a New York Times nod, which tells you everything about the gap between what it looks like and what comes out of the kitchen. Lowcountry ingredients do most of the talking; the pasta is made in house.

  79. Rank 79. Locust

    Japanese

Reservations are scarce at this compact Japanese-influenced restaurant, and the walk-in line forms early. Chef Trevor Moran's menu is built around sharing plates with a precision that feels almost theatrical, from beef tartare hand rolls to rotating kakigori shaved into powdery, sculptural blocks. A Michelin star and a James Beard semifinalist nod signal the ambition; the laidback, buzzy room suggests nobody here is taking themselves too seriously.

  80. Rank 80. Hayato

    Japanese

One seating a night, a handful of seats, and a reservation that requires the patience of a monk. This is a two-Michelin-starred omakase counter in a strip mall on East 7th, where the chef sources, slices, and explains every course himself, plating on Japanese pottery from his personal collection. The menu chases the season hard, and the sake list runs deep for anyone who wants to go down that road with it.

  81. Penelope Wong's Park Hill lunch spot keeps limited hours, which only seems to sharpen the crowd's focus. The menu rotates around dumplings, wontons, and potstickers, with daily specials pulled from her Chinese and Thai background. Wong won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mountain, and the New York Times put this on its restaurant list, which for a weekday lunch counter is the kind of attention that makes Tuesday feel like a reservation you forgot to make.

  82. Rank 82. The Progress

    Modern American

A two-story room of wood, stone, and skylights on the Fillmore, this California-meets-Nordic restaurant is built around sharing plates bold enough to stop conversations mid-sentence. The Liberty Farms duck, arriving with a mountain of peanut fried rice, tends to get a round of applause from neighboring tables. The Progress holds a Michelin star and a James Beard nomination, and the martini has its own press clippings.

The grand hall, with its arches, towering windows, and labyrinthine layout, feels more like a palace than a food court neighbor. The menu traces the chef's journey across India's states, so the range is wide and the spicing is careful. The Paan Negroni at the bar is a fine place to start.

Andrew Tarlow, the restaurateur who more or less invented the Brooklyn communal-table aesthetic, runs his only Manhattan outpost here on East 27th. The neighborhood trattoria seats you at long tables with a daily menu scrawled on butcher paper, and the food leans into the gamy, the bitter, and the slow-cooked, the things that take patience to understand. 88. Saguaro fruit, tepary beans, and wild sumac foraged from Gila River Community land anchor the tasting menu at this fine-dining room on tribal grounds. The team turns those Sonoran Desert ingredients through a global fine-dining lens, so cactus lime pie and buffalo with saguaro syrup land somewhere genuinely unexpected. It holds a Forbes Five Star and AAA Five Diamonds, a combination that signals dress-up territory before you've even looked at the menu.

  89. Fine dining inside The Umstead Hotel and Spa, Herons draws much of its menu from the property's own farm, which gives the kitchen a reason to be smug and the plates a reason to back it up. The chef holds a James Beard semifinalist nod and a Forbes Five Star, and the wine list runs deep enough to require a second read. AAA Five Diamonds. Dress accordingly.

  91. The Canlis salad gets made tableside, which tells you exactly the kind of place this is: old-school fine dining with a capital F, perched on a cliff above Lake Union with views that earn their keep. A five-course prix fixe leans into Northwest ingredients with a quiet nod to the restaurant's Hawaiian roots. Food & Wine named it among the top US restaurants in 2025, and the wine program has a hall of fame plaque to its name.

  92. Rank 92. Press

    Californian

The wine list reads like a love letter to Napa, which is fitting given that Wine Enthusiast put Press in its Restaurant Hall of Fame. This Michelin-starred tasting room off Highway 29 has a soaring dining room anchored by a fireplace, warm wood, and the comfortable hush of people who have nowhere better to be. The kitchen keeps things precise and uncluttered, letting the ingredients carry the weight rather than saucing them into submission.

  93. A tapas spot tucked into the ground floor of an East Nashville apartment building, Peninsula is the kind of place that makes you feel slightly smug for knowing about it. The cooking roams the Iberian Peninsula while borrowing freely from wherever else it pleases, landing in combinations that sound odd and taste inevitable. The chef took a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southeast, and the Michelin Guide lists it as a Bib Gourmand.

  94. Rene Andrade runs a short, rotating menu over a mesquite grill in a small, triangular room, and the James Beard Award for Best Chef Southwest followed. This Sonoran Mexican restaurant in Phoenix trades in carne asada, caramelos built on crisp flour tortillas, and beans that make you reconsider how seriously you've been taking beans. The menu is a handful of items on any given night, many of them changing, all of them smelling like fire.

  95. Half-corn, half-flour tortillas land warm at the table while the menu does what it wants, which turns out to be Mexican cooking with detours through saag paneer, nori, and agnolotti. This casual restaurant in Spring won the 2025 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Texas and holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, unlikely honors for a strip-mall dining room, but the food makes the argument without needing the room to help.

  96. A hand-lettered sign out front promises natural wines and a garden patio, which undersells things considerably. Inside this Bywater spot, a Michelin-starred contemporary tasting menu unfolds across a series of small, precise courses, each one built around sauces that do real work. The chef earned a James Beard nomination for Best Chef: South, and the room is intimate enough that you notice every detail they put on the plate.

  97. A contemporary tasting menu where Southern ingredients quietly take on Asian influences, course by course. The Michelin-starred kitchen on Peachtree threads regional produce through precise, inventive cooking, the kind where a two-chamber ravioli holds mushroom in one half and chestnut in the other. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
