The Best Pan-Asian Food in the United States

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best pan-Asian food in the United States, according to the experts: the Forbes Travel Guide, AAA, and the Michelin Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Benu comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Chicago.

More Less

Diane’s Place and Salt hold the next two places. Eater shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the Michelin Guide close behind.

Eat, change section
  1. Rank 1. Benu

    Pan-Asian

A courtyard full of earthenware crocks, each housing a different fermentation experiment, is how Corey Lee introduces himself before you've touched a menu. Benu is a tasting menu restaurant in SoMa holding three Michelin stars, and the dining room's monastic quiet makes the food's color and technical audacity land harder. Lee's Korean roots fold into California's pantry across a long, ever-changing progression where restraint does more work than flash.

  2. Rank 2. Diane’s Place

    Hmong Pan-Asian

A traditional Hmong cross-stitch pattern meaning "home" runs through the whole room, which tells you exactly what Diane Moua is going for. The neighborhood restaurant inside Minneapolis' Food Building blends Hmong-American cooking with a serious pastry program, and the two halves genuinely need each other. Food & Wine named it Restaurant of the Year, and it landed on the New York Times Restaurant List. The sesame balls have their own fan club.

  3. Rank 3. Salt

    Contemporary Pan-Asian

A wall of windows faces the Atlantic, which does a lot of the heavy lifting at this fine-dining room inside the Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island. The contemporary tasting menu threads European and Asian influences, and the service team remembers returning guests by name, a small touch that lands bigger than it sounds. Book an early table if you want the sunset doing its thing behind your wine glass. AAA Five Diamonds.

  4. Rank 4. Animae

    Pan-Asian

Sky-high ceilings, velvet drapes, and cushy curved booths set the stage for chef Tara Monsod's Filipino- and Asian-inflected steakhouse, a room that takes a night out seriously. The menu moves between wagyu, kinilaw, and kare kare without apology, and the bar is worth a stop on its own. Monsod is a two-time James Beard nominee for Best Chef California, which tracks with how the kitchen handles comfort food this opulent.

  5. Soup dumpling tortellini is either a great idea or a cry for help, and at Maxwells Trading it reads as the former. This contemporary restaurant in the West Loop packs a converted warehouse, where the bar stretches nearly the full length of the room and the kitchen folds Japanese, Chinese, and Thai threads into a single, coherent menu. A rooftop herb garden feeds the kitchen. Named a James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Great Lakes two years running.

  6. Rank 6. Xiao Bao

    Pan-Asian

A diner-style Asian restaurant where a giant strawberry guards the door sets the tone for everything inside: Formica tabletops, red velvet couches, and a menu that bounces between hand-pulled noodles topped with brisket and a la zi spiced smash burger on a bao bun with beef fat fries. The retro fever-dream aesthetic is very much the point. The New York Times named it among Nashville's 25 best restaurants.

  7. Rank 7. Chef's Counter at MAASS

    Contemporary Pan-Asian

Eight seats face an open kitchen inside the Four Seasons Fort Lauderdale, which is about as good a view as a tasting menu gets. The chef's team works through a contemporary New American menu that pulls from French technique and Japanese ingredients, with Florida slipping in where it belongs. A Michelin star keeps it honest. Dress accordingly, and maybe clear the next morning.

  8. Rank 8. Valhalla

    Pan-Asian

A single chef's counter runs the length of a cool, dark room in Wicker Park, putting every diner front-row for the kitchen. Valhalla is a tasting menu spot where the food roams freely, pulling from Filipino, Mexican, Chinese, and Indian traditions in the same meal. The cocktail and wine pairings are taken as seriously as the food, which is saying something. The Banchets named the sommelier of the year for 2025.

  9. Rank 9. Aga's

    Pan-Asian

A banquet hall moonlighting as a Pakistani-Indian restaurant, and the goat chops have made it to the New York Times. The dining room fills fast at lunch with big family-style spreads: kebabs, biryani, curries, and those charred chops that everyone orders. The service keeps pace even when the room is packed to the walls, which it usually is. Bullet naan seasoned with jalapeños and cilantro is a quiet reason to skip the rice entirely.

  11. Rank 11. Mister Mao

    Pan-Asian

The dining room at this Uptown restaurant is painted floor to ceiling in bubblegum pink and emerald green, which turns out to be an accurate preview of the food. The kitchen calls itself "inauthentic," leaning into Asian and Indian flavors with detours wherever it wants, and the results hold a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Weekend brunch draws crowds happy to order everything and share. The chef was a James Beard semifinalist in 2024.

  12. Rank 12. Hey Kiddo

A cocktail lounge called Ok Yeah tucked into the back tells you everything about the vibe here. Hey Kiddo is a playful, Asian-inflected restaurant and bar on the third floor of a Tennyson Street building, with a rooftop deck most people don't find on the first visit. The menu runs on shareable plates, and the team behind it earned a James Beard Outstanding Restaurateur semifinalist nod. The room skews young and loud in the best way.

  13. Rank 13. Xiao Bao Biscuit

    Surprising Pan-Asian

A converted gas station on Rutledge, where the bar runs down the center like a spine and the bartenders are always shaking something. Xiao Bao Biscuit is a casual dinner spot whose chef cuts across Japanese, Thai, and Chinese without pretending to be any of them, which is exactly the point. Tell your server you can handle heat, because the menu leans into it, and the bottle-aged cocktails built on Asian flavors are a reasonable extinguisher.

  15. Pakistani-Indian restaurant on a Fullerton strip that otherwise runs to taquerias and carnicerias, which tells you something about how much confidence it takes to open here. The room is bright and a little hip, with a craft mocktail bar in the back. Beef is quietly central to the menu, though chicken and vegetable dishes hold their own. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and on Eater's list of essential Orange County restaurants.

  16. Rank 16. Mott St.

    Midwest Pan-Asian

Edward Kim's Bucktown restaurant plays Midwest and Chinese off each other in ways that feel neither forced nor fussy. It's a casual, feast-style spot where the menu roams freely and the cooking has enough personality to pull it off. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place where the food is ambitious but the vibe stays loose. Go with a group and order widely.

  17. Despite the name, nobody comes to this strip-mall Thai spot for the wings. The real draw is the menu, a laminated binder that wanders through Thai, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Laotian, and Chinese cooking and has photos of everything, which helps, because you'll need help. Wear whatever you wore to work, bring an appetite, and pick something within five minutes, since the binder will happily outlast your lunch hour.

  18. Rank 18. The Honey Paw

    Modern Pan-Asian Noodle Shop

Communal tables and mismatched plates set the tone at this noodle bar on Middle Street, where the menu wanders confidently through Asia with a New England detour. Lobster wontons land in seafood curry; smoked lamb khao soi shows up alongside whatever happens to be coming off the wok that day. The room is tight, which concentrates the energy nicely. 19. Rank 19. Morimoto Asia

    Pan-Asian

Twenty-foot chandeliers hang over a two-story dining room where the glassed-in kitchen puts the hanging ducks on full display. This is a sprawling fine dining restaurant in Disney Springs built around chef Masaharu Morimoto, with a pan-Asian menu that wanders from American-Chinese classics to ramen, sushi, and Korean dishes. 20. Rank 19. Poor Hendrix

    Southern Pan-Asian

The menu changes daily at this neighborhood gastropub on the eastside, so the regulars check the specials before they sit down. Poor Hendrix is a corner spot that plays it loose: Southern technique meets Asian flavors, first-come seating, no fuss, no reservations. The back patio is the move in good weather, though the bar holds its own. A Michelin Selected pick that clearly didn't dress up for the occasion.

  23. Rank 23. majordōmo

    Pan-Asian

A former warehouse on the industrial edge of Chinatown, majordōmo is David Chang's sprawling, loud restaurant where the open kitchen sets the pace for everything else. The menu drifts freely across Asian influences, from snacks through noodles to large-format sharing plates, and it reads less like a document than a dare. Walk-ins can try for counter seats, but reservations go fast and the room fills faster.

  31. Rank 31. Nudibranch

    Contemporary Pan-Asian

The signature mushroom dish has been on the menu since the place opened, which tells you something about how the East Village regulars feel about it. Nudibranch is a contemporary restaurant where Asian and Spanish influences keep bumping into each other in ways that somehow work, portions run small, and everyone ends up eating off everyone else's plate anyway. The masala chai tres leches lands as a genuinely disorienting closer, in a good way.

  32. The ceilings in this cavernous warehouse dining room are tall enough to humble most airport terminals. It's a full-service Asian grill restaurant where the kitchen runs hot and the menu pulls freely from Thai, Korean, and Chinese traditions, with charcoal doing most of the persuasion. Portions land large, so come with backup or accept your fate before dessert. The cocktails follow the same pan-Asian logic, which is a nice touch.

  33. Rank 32. Fortu

    Pan-Asian

Pan-Asian dining room at the base of the Ponce de Leon Hotel, with arched mirrors, warm wood, and the kind of sleek lighting that makes everyone look like they made a reservation months ago. The kitchen leans hard into contrast: spicy pork wontons with crispy garlic, carrots in kimchi butter, and Japanese A5 wagyu that quietly upstages every steakhouse nearby. The Michelin Guide has it on their radar.

  34. Rank 32. Purveyor

    Pan-Asian

House-made cornbread arrives in a cast iron skillet with honey butter and smoked salt, which tells you something about this downtown Huntsville New American restaurant's instincts. The chef's Mexican background and time in Asian kitchens both show up on a menu that wanders confidently, from ossobuco to pork belly over mole. It's the kind of cooking that makes a mid-size Alabama city feel like it's been quietly overachieving for years.

  35. Rank 32. The Kingsway

    Pan-Asian

The dark blue corner building on Magazine Street turns heads before you even walk in, and the sleek dining room inside keeps the promise. This is a Garden District tasting menu spot where the chef pulls from across Asian cuisines, packaging the whole thing at a price that doesn't require a deep breath. Cocktails lean into Thai tea and lychee; the wine list chases small producers and back vintages. The Michelin Guide has it listed.

  36. Rank 36. Muhajir

    Coastal Pan-Asian

  37. Twelve seats, a polycultural farm and vineyard outside the city, and ceramic dishes thrown from clay dug on the property: the scene is set before the food even arrives. Chef Tae Strain runs a tasting menu where the farm supplies much of what lands on the counter, with Korean-inflected technique quietly threading through each course. The New York Times put it on their 2026 Restaurant List, and the Burnt Hill wines poured between courses are made right outside the window.

  38. A firepit on the patio and shared tables set the tone at this lively Asian street-food spot in Tacoma, where the menu pulls from Thai curries to Korean kimchi barbecue without planting a flag in any single tradition. The crispy rice salad with sausage has a following. Cocktails get serious attention, which separates it from the quieter sit-down sibling it spun off from. New owners took over in 2025, and the regulars, having briefly panicked, have since relaxed.

  39. Tieton is the kind of blink-and-miss-it apple-country town that rewards the detour, and Nomad is its unlikely anchor, a full-service restaurant with a chef's counter and bar that started as an outdoor gear shop and kept going. The menu roams, pairing larb and bulgogi alongside boeuf bourguignon that reportedly sells out on weekend nights. Named among Washington's best by Seattle Met.

  42. Sweet Hut is a Pan-Asian bakery and cafe in Midtown, roomy enough that laptop campers and long-lunch friends coexist without elbowing each other. You'll pass rows of individually wrapped pastries before reaching the register, and the white baskets are a quiet admission that one pastry was never the plan. Matcha red bean, Hong Kong polo buns, and a bulgogi Bibimbap Burger for people who need a real lunch first.

  43. Rank 42. Thai Sapa

    Pan-Asian

  44. Rank 44. Lou's

    Californian Pan-Asian

A J-shaped yellow bar and a handful of stools are the entire dining room at this takeout-only shack in San Rafael, and most people just grab their box and go. The menu changes constantly, sometimes the morning of, and things sell out. The chef pulls from various Asian cuisines and California seasonality, so one week it's pork in black vinegar caramel over rice, the next it's ceviche salad. Call ahead or arrive early, and arrive with no fixed idea of what you want.

  45. Rank 45. Ceremony

    Pan-Asian Café

Ceremony is a tea-focused cafe near Brown that also pours cocktails and natural wine, which is a lot of hats for one counter. The signature move is a reserved tea ceremony led by an apprentice, a quiet tasting that doubles as an exit from the Thayer Street scrum. Walk-ins can order an iced strawberry matcha latte with a giant gummy bear in it, then fight a student for a table.

A buffet inside a medieval-castle casino, which means you can fill a plate with sushi, smoked brisket, and beef birria before noon and nobody in a plastic sword will question it. Six stations cover American, Asian, Italian, and Latin, with made-to-order omelets, iced shellfish, and a dessert counter running to crepes and frozen custard. 57. Rank 54. Planta Queen

    Vegan Pan-Asian Sushi

Planta Queen is an upscale vegan restaurant on North Clark, part of a chain that dresses its plant-based menu in design-forward rooms. The sushi stands in for fish with eggplant, watermelon, and carrots, which is a lot of faith in a carrot. Monday brings unlimited maki for $35, and lunch has a two-course special. Expect a polished crowd that came for dinner, not a lecture.

  58. The faux-elegant dining room sets an ambitious tone for an all-you-can-eat Asian seafood buffet, and Harbor mostly keeps up with it. Fresh oysters, soft-shell crab, rolls, sashimi, and nigiri anchor the spread, while crab rangoon and pork buns handle the comfort-food side. The soft-serve machine is conspicuously absent, but a freezer case of single-serving treats softens the blow. Phoenix New Times named it the city's top Asian buffet in 2025.

This casual noodle shop on the 16th Street Mall works its way across Asia, moving from Japanese ramen to Singaporean, Vietnamese, and Taiwanese dishes. 61. Rank 60. The Wash

    Pan-Asian

The Wash is an all-outdoor food hall where several independent kitchens cook side by side, which makes it the cure for the family argument over Peruvian, pho, Cuban, or fried chicken. Everyone orders from a different window and nobody has to concede anything. It's built around takeout, so the move is a drink at the neighboring Bay 6 while you wait, then home to your own air conditioning. Nashville Scene named it Best Takeout Destination in 2023.

The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
