The Best Italian Food in the United States

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best Italian food in the United States, according to the experts: AAA, the Michelin Guide, and Wine Enthusiast have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Acquerello comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in New York.

More Less

Caruso’s and Fiola hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with AAA close behind.

  1. The building was a church before it became one of San Francisco's finest Italian dining rooms, and the solemn A-frame ceiling still sets the mood: white linens, mellow jazz, sommeliers who treat the cellar like a calling. Then the food arrives and the whole genteel setup gets quietly subverted. Suzette Gresham holds two Michelin stars, and her kitchen pairs French-trained sauce work with Italian soul and a surprisingly playful hand.

  2. Rank 2. Caruso’s

    Californian Italian

The dining room faces the Pacific at the Rosewood Miramar Beach, which sets up certain expectations that the kitchen then politely ignores in favor of a serious Italian-leaning prix-fixe. Chef Massimo Falsini pulls Santa Barbara uni from a local diver and produce from an onsite garden, and the cooking earns both a Michelin star and a Forbes Five Star. Dress accordingly and book early; the leather booths fill with people who planned ahead.

  3. Rank 3. Fiola

    Italian

Stone walls, Warhol-esque prints, and servers who greet you before you've touched the door handle: Fiola is a tasting-menu Italian on Pennsylvania Avenue where Fabio Trabocchi's kitchen treats pasta scraps as an occasion for caviar and sea urchin. Several tasting menus let you calibrate exactly how far down the rabbit hole to go. It holds a Michelin star and landed at number seven on 50 Top Italy's global list.

  4. The triangular house slice here has a quiet cult following, which is funny for a spot that built its name on thick, square Sicilian cuts. This is a counter-service pizza shop where the square pies come topped with things like cacio e pepe and street corn, and the olive oil and grated Parm on the regular slice draws inevitable Di Fara comparisons. Time Out put the cacio e pepe among the best pizzas in the world, if that helps you decide.

  5. Rank 5. Borgo

    Italian

Andrew Tarlow, the restaurateur who more or less invented the Brooklyn communal-table aesthetic, runs his only Manhattan outpost here on East 27th. The neighborhood trattoria seats you at long tables with a daily menu scrawled on butcher paper, and the food leans into the gamy, the bitter, and the slow-cooked, the things that take patience to understand. The New York Times placed it sixth on its 100 Best Restaurants list.

  6. Rank 6. Rezdôra

    Rustic Emilian Trattoria

Handmade pasta is the whole point at this Flatiron Italian, and the kitchen makes the case with tortellini, tagliatelle, and gnocco fritto the way the region actually does it. The cooking stays close to Emilia-Romagna, which means rich, precise, and not particularly interested in impressing you with novelty. A Michelin star and a spot on the 50 Top Italy list for the world's best Italian restaurants suggest the restraint is working.

Mozzarella pulled tableside from a cart is the opener, but at this Italian restaurant in Tampa it's the flavor that earns the attention, not the theater. The pastas are made in house, and the chef, a James Beard nominee, holds a Michelin star for work that feels both classically grounded and genuinely inventive. The room draws the kind of crowd that books early and orders confidently, and the chocolate custard at the end will make you reconsider skipping dessert.

  8. Dark-wood paneling and a white marble antipasti counter signal that this is not your red-checkered-tablecloth Italian place. Nancy Silverton's Melrose osteria holds a Michelin star and takes bread and mozzarella with a seriousness most kitchens reserve for the main course. The pastas are the draw for regulars, but the team is equally intent on pulling you toward the less obvious corners of the Italian table.

House-made pasta and cured meats anchor the menu at this classic Italian restaurant in Bishop Arts, where the kitchen leans on seasonal Texas produce to do the talking. The menu rotates, so regulars rarely eat the same meal twice. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, and the chef earned a James Beard nomination for Outstanding Chef. 10. The sourdough, pasta, and pizza all come from a dedicated production area you can see from the dining room, which tells you something about how seriously this Arts District Italian restaurant takes the basics. Dark walls, vintage silver trays, and a big welcoming U-shaped wood bar give it a rustic warmth that feels nothing like the Strip. The seasonal menu leans farm-forward and the Michelin Bib Gourmand makes the price-to-pleasure math easy.

  11. Rank 11. Raf's

    French-Italian

The house-made bread arrives before you've settled in, and that sets the tone. Raf's is a modern French bistro on Elizabeth Street with enough Italian soul to keep things interesting, the kind of room that feels like it's been around forever even when it hasn't. Pastry Chef Camari Mick is a James Beard semifinalist, and the desserts make that plausible. Walk-ins can usually find a spot at the bar, which is honestly not a bad outcome.

  13. Rank 13. Masseria

    Puglian Italian

A converted warehouse in NoMa where the stainless-steel open kitchen and a glass-encased wine cellar share a room with exposed brick and farmhouse warmth, somehow without contradiction. Nicholas Stefanelli's tasting menu draws on his Puglian roots, and the pasta and bread courses show it most plainly. The staff seem to genuinely enjoy being here, which guests tend to catch. 14. Rank 14. Partenope Ristorante

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The dough here is made by hand in the Neapolitan tradition, soft enough that a margherita lands on the table looking almost too relaxed to be pizza. Partenope is a full-sit-down Italian restaurant on Main Street, the kind of place that takes its time with both the pasta and the service. It landed on 50 Top Pizza USA, which for Dallas is a meaningful data point. The room feels warm rather than scene-y, which in this city counts for something.

  15. Sfincione is Sicilian street food, something between focaccia and pizza, and this focacceria in the Gulch has built its entire identity around it. The dough gets folded in an open kitchen, then topped with fontina, breadcrumbs, and pecorino before rotating varieties like roasted potato cream or spicy tomato with burrata take over. The menu is short by design. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and Esquire named it among the best new restaurants in America in 2024.

  17. The tiramisu gets a Miami rewrite here, dulce de leche cream under a cap of espresso granita, and that instinct runs through everything at this snug Italian restaurant on Alton Road. 22. The wood-grain bar wraps around the pasta station, where sheets are rolled, cut, and hung to dry in full view, which tells you everything about what Sarah Grueneberg is doing at this West Loop Italian spot. Counter stools fill by 5:30, and the regulars who claim them rarely need menus. The cucina tipica runs deeper than pasta, but the pasta is why people talk. A Michelin Selected restaurant.

  23. The sunny yellow exterior and orange canopy on the corner of Melrose are hard to miss, which is fitting because neither is the pizza inside. 24. Seven ovens, eleven styles of pizza, and one corner spot in North Beach that takes the whole argument about which regional pie is superior and simply refuses to pick a side. Tony Gemignani's pizzeria runs Neapolitan next to Detroit next to New Haven next to Roman, all under one roof, which is either heresy or the only sane position. It lands at number two on 50 Top Pizza USA and number ten in the world.

  25. Rank 25. Daisies

    Italian

Pasta and vegetables carry most of the weight here, at this bright, sun-flooded Italian restaurant in Logan Square that holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The house-made pappardelle and rigatoni keep regulars coming back, but the onion dip with house-made ruffles has become a thing people talk about. A bakery tucked in the back means the pastry situation at the end of a meal is genuinely hard to navigate. The bar program turns heads too, a James Beard semifinalist for hospitality.

  28. Rank 28. Primo

    Contemporary Italian

The copper kitchen gleams open to the dining room, so you can watch the brigade work while you eat. This is the hotel restaurant at JW Marriott Grande Lakes, doing contemporary Italian with enough confidence that it doesn't feel like a hotel restaurant. Small plates, housemade pasta, and roast chicken in parmesan brodo sit alongside each other without apology. The room runs to booths and banquettes in soft, muted tones, and the bread arrives before anything needs deciding.

  29. Missy Robbins runs an open kitchen inside a former car body shop in East Williamsburg, which tells you something about the bones of the room before a single plate arrives. Lilia is the kind of Italian pasta restaurant where everything is handmade and the mafaldini with pink peppercorns has turned regulars into a kind of informal cult. 34. The L-shaped marble bar and brass fixtures in the Flatiron Hotel's ground-floor Italian restaurant set a tone that's polished without being stiff. The kitchen butchers whole animals in-house and sources from local farmers' markets, running the results through wood-fired pizzas, handmade pastas, and solid main plates. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand, which here means you eat very well and still recognize your credit card statement afterward.

  35. The line forms before the doors open, which tells you something about a strip-mall pizzeria in suburban Maryland. Tony Conte left fine dining to make neo-Neapolitan pies here, and the blistered crusts show it. A James Beard nominee and a spot on 50 Top Pizza USA, the place punches well past its zip code. Mediterranean Italian

A cave à manger on 17th Street where you order at a counter, find somewhere to stand, and immediately wish there were chairs. The menu is Mediterranean-Italian, the wine selection leans natural, and the kitchen behind it all has DNA from Komi, the couple's storied tasting room. Griddled pita and olives are constants; a Japanese sweet potato with koji butter somehow fits right in. The ice cream flavors, polenta-cassis among them, suggest nobody here makes easy choices.

  42. Rank 43. Pasta|Bar

    Modern Italian

A tasting menu restaurant tucked into a strip mall on Ventura Boulevard, which is either a joke or a dare. The format is intimate and genuinely theatrical: drinks and a snack up front in a bar, then a procession of modern Italian-leaning pasta courses that push well past Italian tradition. The cooking holds a Michelin star, and the staff seem to know it without being insufferable about it.

    The awards

  43. Rank 43. Sorrel

    Contemporary Italian

A rooftop garden feeds the kitchen at this fine dining room on a quiet Pacific Heights block, so the herbs and edible flowers on your plate were growing upstairs not long ago. The chef, trained at Quince, makes pasta the way people talk about pasta, and holds a Michelin star for it. The menu moves through small bites and crudo before landing on those handmade shapes, each one a quiet argument that Northern California and Italy have a lot to discuss.

  46. Rank 47. Bottega

    Italian

Sharply dressed guests line up outside a Beaux-Arts building in Southside before the doors even open, which tells you something about how this place operates. Bottega is an upscale Italian-Mediterranean restaurant where dark wood walls and high ceilings set a polished tone, and the servers are warm enough to soften the formality. A Michelin Selected pick and a James Beard Nominee for Outstanding Hospitality, it's been the city's grown-up dining room for longer than anyone's counting.

  47. Handmade pasta is the whole argument at this Mission Italian restaurant, where an open kitchen and a roaring pizza oven set the mood before you've ordered. The menu shifts constantly, leaning into the California-Italian overlap the neighborhood has come to expect from it. Half-portions exist, which is the kitchen quietly admitting the pasta list makes choosing one impossible. It's been an old-school institution long enough to anchor the block around it.

Cucina Morini is a Sicilian-leaning Italian restaurant where the menu sprawls in the best way, pastas are made in house and offered in half portions so ordering more feels principled rather than excessive. The chef's James Beard semifinalist nod tracks; the food is careful without announcing itself.

It's a rustic Italian restaurant where the pastas do the heavy lifting, particularly a rigatoni with fennel sausage ragù that regulars order without looking up. The three-sided bar is your best friend if you didn't plan ahead. The Michelin Guide has awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

Three renovated townhouses in historic downtown Charleston have been stitched together into an all-day Southern Italian cafe where the bones of an old bank still show through in the brass and marble. 59. Rank 60. Louie

    Italian

The wood-roasted chicken at this Clayton neighborhood restaurant arrives with rapini and an immaculate jus, nowhere to hide and nothing to prove. Louie is the kind of Italian-leaning spot where the room feels luxurious without feeling stiff, and the seasonal pastas and pizzas do quiet, confident work. A 2026 James Beard nominee for Outstanding Hospitality, it draws regulars who treat it like a standing reservation with old friends.

  60. Part restaurant, part charcuterie counter, Augustine's Salumeria is a relaxed modern Italian spot in Mamaroneck where the menu leans hard on Westchester farms and local fishermen. The kitchen turns out Italian-leaning dishes alongside nightly specials that change the calculation every time. The wood-fired oven does the talking here, blistering crusts until they're charred and chewy in all the right spots. Bar Del Corso is a pizza shop on Beacon Avenue that keeps quietly outrunning that label, with fried risotto balls, grilled octopus, and aperitivo-forward cocktails filling out a short menu. 63. Rank 65. Antico Pizza Napoletana

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The menu lives on a sign above the counter, and you decide on your pizza before you've even found a seat at the communal tables. This cavernous Neapolitan pizza shop shares its dining room with the prep kitchen, so you watch the dough get shaped and slid into one of three wood-fired ovens while you wait. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a spot on 50 Top Pizza USA, which tracks for a place that draws lines in a strip-mall parking lot.

  64. Parked at the edge of the Union Station train tracks, Tavernetta is a polished Italian restaurant from the Frasca Hospitality Group, whose wine list alone draws a certain kind of devoted regular. The room is bright and roomy, with a comfortable bar up front and an open kitchen in the back. The menu runs classic, cacio e pepe and lamb ragu with rigatoni, prepared with real care. 69. Rank 71. Milton’s

    Inventive Italian-American

Milton's is an Italian-American restaurant up a flight of stairs from Local Foods in Rice Village, which means you earn your lasagna a little. That lasagna is built from 100 layers, then sliced and seared so the edges crisp, a lot of engineering for something your grandmother did with a casserole dish. The tiramisu arrives tall enough to need a plan, and the chef is a James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Texas.

  70. Rank 72. Ambra

    Italian

One communal table, four kitchen seats, and a tasting menu that runs three hours minimum, because the team is not in a hurry and neither should you be. Ambra is high-end Italian tasting, with house-made pasta, warm focaccia, and a beverage pairing that isn't optional. The New York Times named it among Philly's 25 best, and Philadelphia Magazine put it at number four on their annual list.

  71. Rank 73. Tribute Pizza

    Neo-Neapolitan Pizzeria

The building was a post office once, and the open kitchen has replaced the sorting floor with a wood-fired oven at its center. The menu is mostly mix-and-match, pasta shapes paired with sauces, and a server will gently steer you away from a wrong turn. 74. Rank 76. Cafe Olli

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas come out gently charred, topped with whatever the Pacific Northwest is doing well that week. Cafe Olli is a pizza and brunch spot on MLK that also runs a serious bread and pastry program out of the adjoining bakery. The New York Times put it on their restaurant list and the chef landed a James Beard semifinalist nod, which tracks for a neighborhood place that treats zucchini and peaches like they have something to prove.

  75. Rank 77. Illata

    Creative Italian

A twenty-seat BYOB in Grays Ferry where the menu runs fewer than a dozen small plates, almost all of them seafood-leaning and swapped out with the seasons. The kitchen pairs familiar things in ways that quietly surprise you, carrots with crab, mussels over miso and chili oil. Bring something good to drink, because the food asks for it, and book ahead, because twenty seats go fast.

  76. Checkered tablecloths and red-sauce ambition fill this cozy Italian-American fine dining spot in River North, where the Hogsalt group went full throwback and meant it. Pastas are made in-house, portions are unapologetically generous, and the tiramisu is heavier on the booze than most places would dare. 77. Rank 79. Pizzeria Sei

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

Three pizza styles under one roof: puffy Neapolitan, fried montanara, and the thin Roman scrocchiarella. This Palms pizzeria is the grown-up version of a beloved Pico-Robertson original, now with a proper sit-down dining room and a menu that stretches to supplì and broccolini with bagna cauda. The kind of neighborhood spot that gets written about in cities far from Los Angeles, so booking ahead is wise.

  78. Rank 80. Cosmica

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

An Italian diner doing a spaghetti Western impression, Cosmica landed on the New York Times Restaurant List for 2025 and earns the attention. The Central Ninth spot is big, kitschy, and photogenic in a way that stops short of feeling calculated, with housemade pastas, wood-fired Neapolitan pies, and a clam pizza finished with salsa verde that quietly steals the table. The "House Puffy Bread" arrives straight from the oven, hot enough to make you burn your fingers.

  79. Rank 81. Obelisk

    Italian

A five-course prix-fixe of seasonal Italian, five nights a week, in a room that reads like a neighborhood spot rather than the occasion it technically is. The cooking is quiet and direct, letting good ingredients do the work without much fuss or flourish. Breads and desserts are made in-house, and the antipasti arrive fast, which is fortunate, because you're otherwise looking at a two-to-three-hour sit.

  80. Rank 82. Fiore

    Italian

Pasta at 8 a.m. is either a cry for help or a reasonable lifestyle choice, and Fiore makes a compelling case for the latter. This tiny Italian cafe on Frankford Ave grew out of a larger restaurant that shed its wood-fired oven and half its menu, keeping only what the chef does best: regional Italian baked goods, bright seasonal salads, and cacio e pepe that regulars order before most places have unlocked the door.

  81. Rank 83. Harlo Steakhouse & Bar

    Italian Steakhouse

Harlo is an upscale steakhouse in Summerlin, set up like an old Vegas lounge with chandeliers, indoor trees, and booths plush enough to lose a fork in. 84. The pasta here is why Mike Easton built a cult following at his old Seattle spot, Il Corvo, and it's why people now drive 20 miles north of Walla Walla to a tiny Italian dinner restaurant in a historic Main Street building. Eighteen seats, no minors, and reservations that go fast. The menu leans into nearby farms and changes with the seasons, with Italian wine and cocktails keeping pace. A James Beard nominee for Best New Restaurant in 2024.

  85. Dark green ceiling, brass chandeliers, and live plants spilling overhead set the scene at this chic little prix-fixe spot near Lake Merritt. The deal is a three-course Italian dinner, two choices per course, no reservations. House-made pasta with a slow-braised tomato sugo is the constant around which everything else rotates. South Philly red-sauce bar that has been around forever, bought and quietly restored by Joey Baldino, who has a gift for making a room feel like it never changed. The bones are exactly what you'd expect: dim, neighborhood, no-nonsense. The food is where things get interesting, with stuffed calamari and lobster Francesca that make the whole retro room suddenly feel like a serious argument. The New York Times put it on their 2026 Restaurant List, and that tracks.

  87. Rank 89. La Ciccia

    Sardinian

Bottarga grated over fresh spaghetti is as close to a signature as this intimate Noe Valley Sardinian restaurant gets, though dried tuna heart shaved over fusilli gives it a run. The menu is concise, written partly in Sard, and offers a cash discount at the bottom. A neighborhood regular bought the place specifically to keep it exactly as it was, which is either very reassuring or a little telling about how attached people get.

This is elegant, unhurried Northern Italian dining: handmade pasta, bistecca, and an all-Italian wine list curated with the kind of seriousness you'd expect from someone who also co-owns a Friuli winery. Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
