The 22 Best Tapas Bars in the United States

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best tapas bars in the United States, according to the experts: AAA, the Michelin Guide, and The New York Times have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Casa Mono comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Chicago.

More Less

Zurito and Finca hold the next two places. Eater shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Infatuation next.

  1. Rank 1. Casa Mono

    Catalan Tapas Bar

The kitchen butchers whole animals in-house, which tells you something about how seriously this compact Spanish tapas bar on Irving Place takes its sourcing. Dishes arrive in a sensible order, not all at once, and they're sized to actually eat rather than admire. A Michelin star and a New York Times top-100 nod haven't made it precious. Order widely, resist keeping track, and plan to wish everything were slightly larger.

  4. Rank 5. Sur Lie

    Eclectic Tapas Bar

A mahogany bar anchors one end while a giant abstract mural anchors the other, and in between, marina lights hang above wooden booths full of regulars who clearly regard this as their personal dining room. Sur Lie is a tapas-style New American spot where small, eclectic plates rotate through whatever the kitchen finds interesting. A James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Hospitality, the warmth here is structural, not performed.

  6. A chef's counter built for multicourse tastings anchors the low-lit, warm-toned room, though walk-ins grazing on tapas fill it just as happily. This is a Spanish tapas spot from the chef behind Alma Fonda Fina, and it flies a little under the radar for it, which means a table here is easier to come by. The cocktail list leans saffron-forward, and the wine picks from lesser-known Spanish regions are worth the detour.

  7. Rank 8. IDOL WOLF

    Tapas Bar

A chorizo-washed mezcal margarita is a strong opening argument for the bar program at this Spanish pintxos spot on Locust. The menu runs the classics, pan con tomate, patatas bravas, a Caesar buried under microplaned manchego with a paprika-spiked dressing, and the kitchen handles them with enough care that they feel like discoveries. The crowd tends to stay later than planned, which is more or less the point.

  9. Rank 10. Gilda

    Basque Tapas Bar

Gilda is a Basque-style pintxos bar in West Town, named for the skewer of anchovy, pickled pepper, and olive that arrives early and sets the tone for a lot of small, salty things on toothpicks. Cod croquettes and a cheesecake round out the food, and the cocktails get weird in a good way, like mezcal washed in jamón fat. Reservations are the rule most days, with Mondays left for walk-ins.

  10. Rank 11. Leña

    Catalan

Every log in the hearth is Michigan oak, cherry, or applewood, and the smoke threads through a Basque and Catalan menu that sprawls from pintxos to proper entrees. This is a sit-down dinner spot in Brush Park where sharing is assumed and the wine list leans Spanish throughout. A specialty gin and tonic section and a sherry-forward low-alcohol program round out what is, by any measure, a well-considered room to spend money in on a Friday night.

  13. Rank 14. 13 Gypsies

    Tapas Bar

This is a small Spanish tapas restaurant on Stockton Street with fewer than ten tables, a dim, moody room, and a sangria habit that works best by the pitcher. Plan on ordering a whole table's worth of small plates, then saving room for the daily risotto and the tres leches. The website hasn't been touched in years, so for a last-minute table you'll need to do the unthinkable and call. It's a date-night and celebration kind of room.

  14. Rank 14. La Merenda

    Tapas Bar

Colombian empanadas next to lamb Bolognese next to butter chicken, and somehow none of it fights. La Merenda was doing international small plates in Walker's Point before the neighborhood caught up, and the reservations-required dining room still draws the crowd that doesn't need a theme explained to them. The goat cheese curds in chorizo cream sauce over crostini is the kind of thing that makes the eclectic menu feel less like a concept and more like a good idea.

  15. Rank 14. Othello

    Mediterranean Tapas Bar

Othello is a tapas restaurant in Springfield's Historic District, where pothos spills off the bar and moody pendant lights do most of the flirting. The kitchen leans Spanish and Mediterranean, and dinner starts with a choice of house-baked breads, which is a decision you'll take more seriously than expected. The cocktails go heavy on amari, and the string-lit patio is the move on a mild night, especially for a date.

  16. Rank 18. Corrida

  17. Rank 18. The Royal Scam

    Modern Tapas Bar

An industrial-chic small-plates restaurant on Royal Street where the menu leans Gulf-forward with enough global riffs to keep things interesting. The kitchen started as a tapas spot and still thinks in that register, running imaginative little plates alongside proper mains. Save a lane for dessert: the bread pudding with toasted pecans, apples, and bourbon caramel has become something of a local institution. Closed Sundays and Mondays, so plan accordingly.

  18. Rank 20. Mercat a la Planxa

    Catalan Tapas Bar

    Address
638 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL, United States

  19. Geometric tilework and honey-hued lighting set the scene at this casual Spanish tapas bar on Columbia Pike, where a pitcher of sangria and a spread of small plates is the whole plan. The kitchen leans into Moorish-influenced staples, bacon-wrapped dates, chickpea stew, mussels with charred bread for sopping. The room rewards lingering, and the crowd tends to take that as a personal challenge.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
