The best Egyptian food in the United States, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, The New York Times, and Eater have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. AbuQir comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Portland OR and Chicago.
More Less
Tōv Coffee and Fava Pot hold the next two places. Eater shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with AAA next.

Rank 1. AbuQir
Egyptian Seafood
You pick your fish from the case, tell them how you want it, and then somehow end up eating one of the better seafood meals in the city. The New York Times ranked this Egyptian seafood market at number seventeen in New York, which raises real questions about what the fancier places on that list are doing with their tablecloths. The room is Astoria's Little Egypt, not a dining room, and nobody seems to mind.

Rank 2. Tōv Coffee
Egyptian Café
This Hawthorne coffee shop brews its Egyptian coffee with cardamom in a tray of hot sand, which makes your usual drip look like it isn't trying. The room is all jewel tones and Persian rugs, and the cardamom latte and rose mocha come with a square of semolina cake. It used to live in a double-decker bus, so the sand tray is a rather natural next step.

Rank 3. Fava Pot
Egyptian
Fava beans, not chickpeas, go into the falafel here, which tells you something about how seriously this Falls Church spot takes its Egyptian identity. It's a warmly informal, homestyle restaurant where the owner greets everyone like a relative and the menu runs deep, from lamb shank with roasted potatoes to beef moussaka with pine nuts. The kind of room that smells like someone has been cooking since morning, because someone has.
