The best Alpine food in the United States, according to the experts: The 50, Eater, and Bon Appétit have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Avize comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Atlanta and Chicago.

More Less

Glitretind and Alpino hold the next two places. Eater shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Bon Appétit next.

  1. Rank 1. Avize

    Southern Alpine

A taxidermy mountain goat watches over the dining room, which tells you most of what you need to know about the vibe. Avize is an Alpine French wine bar and restaurant where the menu pulls from France, Switzerland, Italy, and Austria, all filtered through Southern ingredients. Frog legs nod to an Atlanta wing institution. The drinks program is serious enough to earn a James Beard semifinalist nod, and North America's 50 Best ranks it at number 29.

  2. Rank 2. Glitretind

    Luxurious Alpine

  3. Alpino is a Corktown dinner spot dressed as an Alpine ski lodge, with a stone fireplace at the center and no mountain within several hundred miles. The menu wanders through Austria and the neighboring French, German, Italian, and Swiss kitchens, and the team makes its own bread, pasta, and sausage. It was a James Beard semifinalist for Best New Restaurant. Reserve ahead, especially if you're angling for the summer patio.

  4. The name is lifted from a German fable, which tells you something about what you're in for. This Logan Square neighborhood restaurant does Alpine cooking in a rustic inn setting, with communal tables, an inviting bar, and a charcuterie selection long enough to be its own evening. The kitchen has a playful streak that runs all the way through to pretzel ice cream with jalapeño caramel. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  5. Raclette, schnitzel, spätzle, and a frosty Bavarian beer in a chalet-style dining room: Alpenrose leans into Alpine tradition without apology. This cozy European restaurant has been an old-school Vail institution, and a 2018 ownership change by the team behind neighboring Almresi kept the Old World spirit intact. Summer brings a flower-filled patio; winter makes the case for staying inside with something warm and melted.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
