The Best Moroccan Food in the United States

Sections

The best Moroccan food in the United States, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, the Los Angeles Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Aziza comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in New York and Portland OR.

More Less

Dar Lbahja and The Colony Club hold the next two places. AAA and the Michelin Guide show up on more of this list than any other guide.

  1. Rank 1. Aziza

    Moroccan

A colorful bar anchors the pale, airy room on Geary, where Mourad Lahlou's Moroccan-California restaurant has been back and quietly owning the Richmond for a few years now. The menu folds California ingredients into North African tradition, and the basteeya, golden phyllo packed with chicken and spiced almonds, has made the trip back too. Service runs warm and knowing. The New York Times named it among the top restaurants in San Francisco.

  2. Rank 2. Dar Lbahja

    Traditional Moroccan

The chicken bastilla arrives dusted with powdered sugar and rose petals, which sounds precious until you taste it and understand why the New York Times critic put it on her favorites list. This is a modest, neighborhood Moroccan cafe in Astoria where the cooking is traditional and the prices are gentle. The pastry crackles, the filling runs sweet then savory, and the two never quite separate. A $12 dish that requires a hundred paper-thin layers to pull off.

  3. Moroccan-style tilework and wallpaper set the mood at this hotel restaurant inside Colony Palms, where the turquoise pool has been catching afternoon light since Clark Gable was a regular. The menu keeps things loose, running from snacks and hummus to grilled pork chop and chicken pot pie. Dress is poolside-adjacent, the vibe is old Palm Springs glamour, and someone at the next table may have just driven up from L.A. for the weekend.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
