The best Burmese food in the United States, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, the Los Angeles Times, and AAA have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. The Dutchess comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in San Francisco and New York.
More Less
Little Myanmar and Teni East Kitchen hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with AAA next.

Rank 1. The Dutchess
Burmese
A bakery by day and a Burmese restaurant by night, The Dutchess occupies a charming old building in the center of Ojai without taking itself too seriously. The menu runs through snacks, curries, and sharing plates, and the tea leaf salad alone explains why the Los Angeles Times put it on their list of California's 101 best restaurants. Save room for dessert, because the pastry side of this operation clearly hasn't clocked out.

Rank 2. Little Myanmar
Burmese
A crunchy Burmese pancake stuffed with vegetables and sesame seeds is the right way to start at this tiny East Village restaurant, where a family team runs the room with the kind of warmth that makes a ten-table spot feel like the whole point of the neighborhood. The menu runs longer than you'd expect from a place this small, covering soups, salads, curries, and noodles. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and easy to see why portions are built for sharing.

Rank 2. Teni East Kitchen
Californian Burmese Café
Burmese food with a California conscience in a Temescal cafe where the tea leaf salads arrive with kale and golden roti bread disappears fast. The lunch specials are a particular draw, a hot entree and a fresh salad for a price that makes you feel like you've gotten away with something. Bright, airy, wooden beams overhead. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks: the portions are generous and nothing on the menu feels fussy.

Rank 4. Burmatown
Innovative Burmese
The bright-orange bungalow in a Corte Madera strip of shops gives nothing away, but the Burmese restaurant inside draws neighborhood families who fill every table most nights. Tea leaf salad is the reason to start, fermented and crunchy and unlike anything else on a menu in Marin County. The mood is genuinely relaxed in the way that only places with warm servers and no pretension manage, and the kitchen skips fusion entirely.

Rank 7. Burma Place
Burmese
Burma Place is a casual Burmese restaurant in Rancho Bernardo where the salads are the main event, which is a sentence you rarely get to write about a strip-mall dinner. The tea leaf version tosses crisp romaine in a fermented green tea dressing with crunchy fried peas and nuts. The samosa salad is for heavier appetites, and most salads run under $17, so wear whatever you wore to work. Eater counts it among San Diego's best salads.
