The Best Greek Food in the United States

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best Greek food in the United States, according to the experts: Wine Enthusiast, the James Beard Awards, and Boston Magazine have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Krasi comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in New York and Chicago.

More Less

Estiatorio Milos and Melina hold the next two places. Eater shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with AAA close behind.

  1. The bottle list skews Greek, which in practice means you'll be asked whether you'd like to explore natural wines from the Peloponnese before you've even taken your coat off. Krasi is a mezze and wine bar in Back Bay where the food is built for sharing and the room runs loud and convivial. The chef earned a James Beard nomination for Best Chef: Northeast, and Wine Enthusiast named it among their Forward 50. There's a cocktail bar downstairs for a nightcap.

  2. The fish at this Greek fine dining room on the Strip is displayed on ice for you to choose before it's grilled, which is either refreshing transparency or mild pressure depending on your temperament. Servers know their regions and textures cold, so let them steer you. The lunch prix-fixe draws local regulars who know a quiet deal when they see one. Evenings bring a dressed-up crowd there for the seafood and the room.

  3. The braised local ram, processed at the WSU meat lab down the road, arrives on house-made pappardelle and sets the tone for this Greek-inflected American restaurant in Pullman. The menu reads approachable, roast chicken, pork chops, carbonara, but the kitchen's precision turns familiar dishes into the reason you drove here. Cocktails use house-made orgeat. A 2023 James Beard Nominee for Outstanding Hospitality, which tracks for a place this quietly obsessive.

  4. Olive trees planted between the tables are doing a lot of heavy lifting, but this roomy Greek restaurant on N Street sells the Aegean fantasy well enough that you forget you're in Dupont Circle. The menu runs through the classics, spanakopita, souvlaki, avgolemono, fish grilled with capers flown in from Greece, and the fries have a devoted following. Baklava with iced Greek yogurt closes things out the only sensible way.

  5. Copper pots hang from the wood beams and a wood-burning fireplace roars at the center of this upscale Greek restaurant in downtown Palo Alto, where whole suckling pigs spin over the grill and lemon halves arrive bound in cloth so you don't spray a lamb chop. The crowd skews tech money at lunch and date night by evening, and the prices track accordingly. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and the room makes that feel completely unsurprising.

  6. Rank 7. AVA Mediterraegean

    Mediterranean Greek

A sleek modern Greek restaurant on Winter Park's main drag, AVA runs a shared-plates menu rooted in the Cycladic islands, mezze to seafood mains to a baklava that arrives with pistachio orange blossom ice cream and makes a strong case for dessert. It's a bit of a scene, so the crowd dresses for it. Come as a duo or a group; the format rewards both, and the Michelin Guide has taken notice.

  7. Rank 8. Chef Zorba's

    American Greek

Avgolemono on a menu full of green chile cheese fries and omelets sets the tone at this neighborhood diner tucked onto a quiet, tree-shaded block just off Colfax. Chef Zorba's has been around forever, and the regulars who walk over from Congress Park carry themselves like they've never needed to look at the menu. Westword handed it Best Soup for a Hangover, which is either high praise or a very specific clientele study.

  9. No octopus, no branzino, no horiatiki. Bar Vlaha is a Greek restaurant that tells a narrower story: the Vlachs, mountain shepherds from northern Greece who foraged forests and fished freshwater streams rather than the Aegean. The menu follows that logic, so beef cheeks braise with prunes in clay pots and the tzatziki gets a drizzle of honey. The New York Times named it among Boston's 25 best restaurants right now, which feels about right for a room this specific.

  10. The garlic and oregano hit you through the door before you've even reached for the handle. Stella's is a Greek neighborhood restaurant run by the same family for years, the kind of place where the table fills up fast with flaky tiropita and saganaki flaming tableside. The braised lamb and artichoke moussaka are built for sharing, and the portions make sure nobody goes home arguing about it.

  11. The name means bread, and the bakery shelves make that promise good before you've ordered anything else. Psomi is a daytime Greek cafe and bakery in Tampa's Hyde Park, open for breakfast, lunch, and weekend brunch, with a Michelin Bib Gourmand to its name. The menu drifts between Greek comfort and something more inventive, including a French dip built on feta-brined chicken and skordalia aioli. Save room: the bougatsa and baklava coffee cake are not rhetorical.

  12. The scent of caramelizing meat and lemon hits you at the door, which is a reliable sign of what kind of Greek restaurant this is: wood-grill-and-rotisserie-serious, with open fireplaces and staff who actually seem happy to see you. Kokkari has been a fixture in Jackson Square forever, pulling off the trick of feeling like an old-world taverna while the room fills with people in very expensive casual wear.

  13. Whitewashed brick, weathered wood beams, and soft lighting give this Upper West Side Greek restaurant the kind of room that makes a Tuesday feel like a reasonable night out. The cooking leans rustic, with spreads and pita giving way to whole grilled fish in lemon and caper sauce. The menu reads like someone's Greek grandmother got hold of a very good pantry, which is more or less the point.

  14. The servers might greet you in Greek if you look like you belong, and on Ditmars Boulevard, plenty of people do. This no-frills Astoria taverna has been feeding the neighborhood long enough to qualify as local infrastructure, with a bustling open kitchen and a menu built around simply prepared whole fish, classic dips, and flaky spinach pie. The Michelin Guide has it listed, but the crowd at the tables wouldn't need to be told.

  15. Rank 16. Estiatorio Milos

    Greek Seafood

Some regulars skip the menu entirely and head straight to the back, where the day's fish and crustaceans are laid out on packed ice like a very glamorous geology exhibit. This is a high-end Greek seafood restaurant on South Beach, the kind where whole grilled fish and lobster anchor the table and the room skews toward people who own boats. Fresh seafood arrives multiple times a week, and the kitchen largely gets out of its own way.

  16. The wood-burning oven does most of the talking at this upscale Greek taverna just off Logan Square Park, kissing nearly everything on the menu with smoke. Warm pita arrives with a lineup of dips, lamb chops come in serious portions, and the baklava froyo with pistachio sauce is the kind of thing you didn't see coming. The wine list runs entirely Greek, from Macedonia to Santorini, which takes a certain confidence.

  17. A roaring fireplace anchors the stylish dining room, and the vine-covered patio fills with Los Gatos's well-dressed set on warm evenings. This is upscale Greek fine dining, not a whitewashed taverna, and the kitchen earns the distinction by staying Greek: stuffed grape leaves with braised beef cheek, a list of Greek wines worth exploring, and a burnt-honey mousse that makes skipping dessert feel unwise.

  18. Rank 18. Kyma

    Greek

The dining room leans hard into its Ionian Sea fantasy, all blue light and coastal mood, and this full-service Greek restaurant commits to the bit without apology. The menu runs from spreads and pita at the start through whole roasted fish and braised meat, the kind of progression that turns dinner into an event. Halloumi fries keep showing up on tables around you, which tells you something.

  19. Rank 18. MP Taverna

    Modern Greek

An 18th-century building a block from the Hudson, fitted out with brass chandeliers and mahogany panels, is an unlikely setting for a modern Greek taverna, but Michael Psilakis makes it work. The menu runs family-style, starting with meze and moving through roasted meats and grilled sausage with orange peel. Call ahead if you want the whole roast animal; that one takes planning.

  20. Rank 18. Nikos

    Greek

A Greek and Mediterranean restaurant tucked into a restored tobacco warehouse, with exposed red brick and that particular blend of rustic and sleek that reads as modern tavern. The menu runs the classics, spanakopita, octopus, baklava, with the meze platter doing the heavy lifting for a group. Pair it with a glass of Greek white and the Durham industrial surroundings do their quiet best to approximate the Aegean, which is more convincing than it sounds.

  21. Rank 18. Pylos

    Greek

Hundreds of terracotta pots hang from the ceiling, which gives this East Village Greek taverna the feel of a pottery barn that got very good at cooking. Whitewashed walls and lapis-blue accents complete the Aegean mood without overdoing it. The menu runs to the kind of home-style food Greeks actually eat, lamb meatballs, baked gigantes, a vegetarian moussaka built on artichokes. The wine list stays close to the homeland.

  22. The flaming saganaki arrives tableside, and in Niles, Illinois, that feels correct and necessary. Kouklas is a big, boisterous Greek eatery in Chicago's inner-ring suburbs, with a menu to match: wood-fire grilled octopus, spicy tirokafteri, souvlaki, and a Greek salad that makes you wonder about the lamb's provenance. The New York Times put it on their 2026 Restaurant List, which tracks for a place this mission-driven about making suburban Greek food something people drive for.

  26. A fish market display near the entrance sets the tone: this is a Greek seafood restaurant where the day's catch gets filleted tableside if you want the show. The menu leans Mediterranean coastal, with braised short ribs in cinnamon tomato and squid ink linguini alongside whatever came off the boat. It sits in a shopping center, but the room doesn't feel like it. A good place to arrive hungry and in no particular hurry.

  27. Rank 24. Magissa

    Contemporary Greek

Magissa is a bright, easygoing Greek taverna in East Bayside, a neighborhood with more breweries than seems strictly necessary. Dinner runs on meze like htipiti and skordalia, scooped up with warm pita, plus grilled lamb and an ouzo cake for dessert. The drinks list leans into mastiha, sumac lemonade, and a local bitters people in Portland talk about like a sports team. Eater has it on its list of the city's best.

  29. The Pappas family has spent decades feeding Houston burgers, barbecue, and Tex-Mex, so an ode to their Greek grandmother feels like a long-overdue plot twist. 32. Rank 34. Martha Dear

    Greek Pizzeria

A sliver of a room on Mt. Pleasant Street where the bar fills up fast and wood-oven pizzas share the menu with Greek-leaning small plates. The team came up through Tail Up Goat, and the cooking has that same instinct for herbs, brightness, and a little crunch. Pizzas run from a classic red-sauce cheese to halloumi-and-squash combinations that have no business being as compelling as they are. Bring an appetite for the whole menu.

  34. Complimentary valet parking at a Greek taverna in Lincolnwood is either a punchline or a promise, and Psistaria delivers on both. White tablecloths and a long menu of Mediterranean staples, from saganaki and gyros to grilled octopus and broiled whole fish, make it the kind of place that works for a birthday or a Tuesday. 35. This Greek restaurant started in suburban Winnetka and then crept into the city, which is the opposite of how chains usually migrate. The River North room is all plants and pale wood, built to feel like a long lunch on an island with a better ferry schedule than yours. The menu goes past the gyros-and-flaming-saganaki starter pack, though you should still order the saganaki. Eater lists it among the area's best.

  36. Rank 38. Avra

    Greek

The whole fish, selected by the diner and cooked to order, is the move at this airy, high-ceilinged Greek restaurant in the heart of Beverly Hills. The room leans into an easy Aegean elegance without trying too hard, and the crowd obliges by dressing accordingly. Seafood does the heavy lifting, but the Greek salad and roasted peppers with barrel-aged feta hold their own. Bring someone you want to impress, and let the pacing do the work.

  37. Rank 38. Kiki's

    Greek

Wine carafes priced the way carafes should be priced, and octopus skewers landing on paper-covered tables beside tzatziki and spanakopita, all of it meant for sharing. Kiki's is a neighborhood Greek taverna on the Lower East Side that got so popular the team opened an identical spot across the street for overflow, which is either very practical or very on-brand for the neighborhood. Usually easy to get a table, which says something.

  38. Rank 38. Naia

    Greek

Naia is a Greek-leaning, see-and-be-seen restaurant on the Chicago River, and the view is good enough that the kitchen could have phoned it in. It didn't, which is how you end up with crab on the falafel and caviar offered for the potato fritters. There's a roving hummus cart and a cheese course that catches fire, so dress like someone who expects to be looked at, and be ready for the next yacht to steal your attention.

  50. The whole branzino is flown in from Greece, cured, air-dried for days, then grilled until the skin shatters, which tells you everything about the kitchen's priorities at this polished Pike & Rose restaurant. It reads like a classic American steakhouse, and you could easily miss the Greek thread running through it, which is exactly what makes that fish such a pleasantly disorienting moment. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
