  1. Rank 202. Amano

    Contemporary Mexican

Amano is a Mexican restaurant in a light-filled former bank lobby in Caldwell, which is the kind of setting where the tacos arrive and nobody thinks to ask about your savings. The chef won a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mountain, and the room is festive in a way small-town Idaho doesn't usually advertise. Birria tacos and carnitas anchor the menu, and a michelada is the move. Expect a casual crowd, with prices to match.

  5. This is a French fine dining room on the 11th floor of a half-size Eiffel Tower, which means you eat duck confit while the Bellagio fountains do their thing below. Window tables face The Strip, and the staff has seen enough dessert proposals that a ring on a plate barely registers as news. Dress like you're being photographed, because you will be. AAA gives it Four Diamonds, and the bar handles the cheaper, quicker version.

  6. Rank 208. Chilte

    Modern Mexican

The restaurant's unofficial motto translates roughly to "I don't give a damn," which is a curious thing to post when your birria arrives in hand-pressed squid ink tortillas with miso consommé. Chilte is a modern Mexican restaurant and bar in a revamped motor hotel on Grand Avenue, and Food & Wine named the chef one of its Best New Chefs. The seasonal menu shifts often, and the team pulls in guest chefs regularly, so the room rewards repeat visits.

  7. Rank 209. Mamani

    Contemporary French

The chef behind this Contemporary French bistro spent nearly a decade running the kitchen at Restaurant Joël Robuchon in Vegas, and the sauces here will remind you why that matters. Mamani holds a Michelin star, and the room is glitzy enough to justify the à la carte prices. The menu skews shareable and French-classical: Dover sole, a veal Cordon Bleu, a Paris-Brest that arrives looking like it was sent from Paris to make a point.

  8. Rank 210. Masseria

    Puglian Italian

A converted warehouse in NoMa where the stainless-steel open kitchen and a glass-encased wine cellar share a room with exposed brick and farmhouse warmth, somehow without contradiction. Nicholas Stefanelli's tasting menu draws on his Puglian roots, and the pasta and bread courses show it most plainly. The staff seem to genuinely enjoy being here, which guests tend to catch. A Michelin star and a spot on 50 Top Italy's global list.

  9. The antojitos here lean into Aztec culinary tradition that most Mexican restaurants skip entirely, which gives this Logan Square neighborhood spot a menu worth reading slowly. The chef has earned James Beard nominations and a Michelin Bib Gourmand while running what is, at its heart, a warm, unpretentious antojeria. Seasonal cocktails, knowledgeable servers, and a room that stays lively without tipping into loud.

  10. Rank 212. Mita's

    Spanish

Chef Jose Salazar's tapas bar runs on small plates and a staff that functions more as a personal concierge than a waitstaff, pacing courses, pairing wines, and gently talking you into things you didn't know you wanted. The Spanish and Latin American menu moves through blistered peppers and embutidos before landing on a paella that's the exception to the small-plates rule. A James Beard nominee, and the kind of room that feels like the party started without you but will absolutely let you in.

  11. The line out front of this Doraville strip-mall spot does the advertising. Kamayan ATL is a Filipino neighborhood restaurant built around kamayan, the tradition of eating communally by hand, and the family-style menu leans into classics and regional dishes with equal confidence. A James Beard semifinalist, it started as a pop-up and never lost that devoted, word-of-mouth energy. Book ahead; the room is small and the fans are loyal.

  12. Rank 214. Odd Duck

    Southern

A food truck that grew up and got a roof, Odd Duck on South Lamar is a casual, come-as-you-are restaurant built around shareable Southern plates with a roving global curiosity. Chicken heart satay sits near wagyu burgers and stuffed quail with dirty rice, and nobody seems troubled by the range. The Michelin Bib Gourmand recognized it, and the sourdough ice cream with pecan streusel will make you understand why the room is always full.

  13. Rank 215. Claud

    French

A few steps below street level on East Tenth, this French-inflected New American restaurant runs on shared plates and an open kitchen that keeps the room honest. The cooking touches the familiar at a slant: grilled cabbage, tempura squash blossoms, and a six-layer chocolate cake soaked in vermouth and evaporated milk that nominally serves two. The New York Times placed it fifteenth on its list of the city's hundred best. Reservations are a project, but the bar absorbs the overflow gracefully.

  14. Rank 216. Camille

    Vietnamese-French

A multicourse tasting menu built around Vietnamese French cooking, where northern-style pho arrives as wagyu tartare in a savory broth alongside a doughnut pastry. Chef Tung Phan's Lake Baldwin fine dining room is boldly sleek, all wood accents and considered lighting, with counter seats for the full experience and booths for a shorter one. It holds a Michelin star, which makes sense once dessert channels a cheese course through red bean cake and strawberry sansho sauce.

  15. Rank 217. Commander's Palace

    Cajun & Creole

The turquoise Garden District mansion has been turning out Modern New Orleans Creole since Ella Brennan and a young Emeril Lagasse were essentially inventing the genre together. Fine dining in the grand sense, white tablecloths and all, though the room skews festive rather than stiff. Meg Bickford runs the kitchen now, keeping the cooking by turns classicist and a little bodacious. Wine Enthusiast put the cellar in its Hall of Fame, and the weekday lunch martinis go for a quarter.

  16. Each month brings a single fixed menu, two entrée choices, no walk-ins, and reservations that open on Tock a few days before the month turns, so planning ahead is part of the ritual. Spencer is a neighborhood wine restaurant with family-style seating that reads less like a dining room and more like someone's very well-stocked kitchen. The wine list is a James Beard Nominee for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program, and it earns the attention.

  17. Kristi Brown's modern soul food restaurant on Capitol Hill runs on a certain gravitational pull, the kind where strangers at the bar invite you to art openings and the neck-bone stew, all smoky shredded meat and tender lima beans in a deep broth, makes conversation stop mid-sentence. The menu rotates seasonally, landing on catfish and grits or local clams in coconut milk depending on when you show up. A James Beard nominee, and on the New York Times radar too.

  18. Rank 220. Yank Sing

    Dim Sum Chinese

The carts still roll here, which is the whole point. Yank Sing is a dim sum shop in the Financial District that holds to the old push-cart service at a time when most places gave it up. Staff wear headsets and radio the kitchen when something you want hasn't come around yet, a detail that somehow makes it feel both retro and efficient. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand. Expect a wait at peak hours.

  19. Rank 221. Orsa & Winston

    Italian-influenced Japanese

Satsuki rice porridge finished with parmesan cream and uni tells you everything about what Josef Centeno is doing at this prix-fixe counter in Downtown LA. Italian and Japanese cooking share more DNA than people expect, and this Michelin-starred omakase-style room leans into that overlap with crudos brightened by fruit and herbs and seafood that reads Mediterranean one bite and Japanese the next. The open kitchen keeps it intimate, which is a polite way of saying you'll want to be paying attention.

  20. Rank 222. Mélisse

    Modern French

You enter through a discreet side door, which sets the tone for Josiah Citrin's long-running Santa Monica tasting menu. Inside, the room feels like a velvet underground with good silverware, and the French decadence runs toward the gratuitous side, which is the point. Tableside saucing, antique silver press, dry-aged duck, truffles on everything. Two Michelin stars.

  22. Jordan Kahn's two-Michelin-star tasting menu operates inside a structure Culver City locals call "The Waffle," a red steel lattice that looks like it landed from somewhere with better architecture. The food inside is just as committed to the bit: courses that are visually theatrical and technically serious, edible flowers floating in tomato water, flavors that feel like they were calibrated rather than cooked. Dress accordingly; this is not a casual Tuesday.

  23. Tucked next to chef Johnny Curiel's flagship, this agave bar doubles as a serious kitchen, and the two halves push each other into strange, good territory. The mezcal list is long and thoughtful, the cocktails inventive, and the food pulls from Mexico City's restless energy with Japanese and other detours woven in. A Michelin star and a New York Times nod followed quickly. Plan around the bar counter if you can.

  24. Rank 226. Madcap

    American

The walls at this San Anselmo tasting menu spot are hung with large, deeply strange paintings, the kind that make you wonder if you've wandered into a fever dream. You haven't. Ron Siegel's eight-course prix fixe runs French and Japanese currents through a modern American frame, and the kitchen is as composed as the art is unhinged. A Michelin star, and a fraction of the price you'd pay for comparable cooking in the city.

  25. A barely-there sign on Beacon Hill marks this casual Guamanian restaurant and bar, which is either accidental humility or the universe's way of filtering out TikTokers (it has not worked). The menu follows the chef's biography through Filipino chicken adobo tacos and Guam-style corn soup, but the achiote-orange empanadas, stuffed with raisined beef and served in a pool of fina'denne', are what drew a James Beard semifinalist nod in 2025.

  26. Chef Phillip Foss lives upstairs, which pretty much sets the tone. This Michelin-starred tasting menu in a converted warehouse runs one seating a night, serves everyone at once, and asks you to bring your own wine. Guests wander into the pantry, hover next to the cooks, and eat off plates that occasionally require licking. The menu shifts constantly, but the French fries with potato leek soup and nitro-poached ice cream never leave.

  27. The limestone facade on Broadway gives way to ash wood, mosaic tile, and a wide-open kitchen that runs the whole show. This is a French brasserie with a Michelin star, the kind of place where the duck arrives whole before someone carves it tableside. Williamsburg's dressed-up crowd fills the generously spaced tables, and nobody looks out of place in either a blazer or a good jacket.

  28. Rank 230. Oberlin

    American

Oberlin is a downtown Providence restaurant where locals take their New York friends to prove the city can be chic and still feed you well. The seafood plates rotate, the staff will talk you through the vermouth list without making you feel like a tourist, and the salt cod brandade arrives with grilled country bread. It's a James Beard Outstanding Restaurant nominee, and the raw bar next door handles the wait.

  29. A tasting menu that ends with an aged cheddar sundae tells you most of what you need to know. Wild Common holds a Michelin star and runs a contemporary fine dining format with a global restlessness, leaning on local ingredients without making a fuss about it. Counter seats facing the open kitchen are the move. The chef, a James Beard semifinalist, keeps the whole thing looser and more fun than the format usually allows.

  30. Rank 232. Avize

    Southern Alpine

A taxidermy mountain goat watches over the dining room, which tells you most of what you need to know about the vibe. Avize is an Alpine French wine bar and restaurant where the menu pulls from France, Switzerland, Italy, and Austria, all filtered through Southern ingredients. Frog legs nod to an Atlanta wing institution. The drinks program is serious enough to earn a James Beard semifinalist nod, and North America's 50 Best ranks it at number 29.

  31. Eight seats at a counter tucked inside a shared space, which tells you almost everything about the vibe before the bread arrives. Margot is a multicourse tasting menu restaurant earning a Michelin star on the strength of cooking that reads as both Colorado and everywhere at once. Each guest gets their own individual loaf of olive oil brioche, freshly baked, which sets the tone for hospitality that somehow manages not to feel performative.

  32. The corn gets roasted the day before, then ground fresh each morning for the tortillas, which tells you everything about how this East Austin taqueria operates. The menu runs on nixtamalized heirloom corn and swings between ancient technique and something like duck fat refried beans without missing a step. The chef took a James Beard Emerging Chef win and a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Come early, and come however you're dressed.

  33. The menu credits local farmers by name, which tells you what kind of small-plates restaurant this is before the food even arrives. Reclaimed wood, subway tile, and a patio backed by a bold flower mural set the room; the kitchen turns whatever's in season into inventive rustic-American plates that change often enough to reward repeat visits. The chef was a James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Great Lakes in 2023.

  34. Salted yeast rolls arrive hot with garden herb butter before you've even made a decision, which tells you something about how this rustic neighborhood restaurant in Decatur operates. 35. Rank 238. Sixty Three Clinton

    Modern American

A tasting menu in a quietly understated Lower East Side room that reads far more modest than what comes out of the kitchen. The cooking is precise and composed, moving from a breakfast taco opener to scallop to a short rib and closing on goat milk ice cream. 37. Rank 240. Salt

    Contemporary Pan-Asian

A wall of windows faces the Atlantic, which does a lot of the heavy lifting at this fine-dining room inside the Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island. The contemporary tasting menu threads European and Asian influences, and the service team remembers returning guests by name, a small touch that lands bigger than it sounds. Book an early table if you want the sunset doing its thing behind your wine glass. AAA Five Diamonds.

  38. A separate menu devoted entirely to Northern Thailand, with dishes that lean toward Myanmar, Laos, and South China, is the thing that separates this Thai restaurant from every other Thai restaurant in Las Vegas. The room is a casino-scale take on temple architecture, all red brick and paper lanterns, but the cooking predates the glamour by a long stretch and has never chased it. 42. Rank 245. MONTE

    European

Gin barrels stacked floor to ceiling are the first thing you notice, which makes sense given that this tasting menu restaurant sits inside the Beehive Distillery. The chef pulls from French, Italian, and South American training to build a refined, locally sourced menu, and the results earned a Michelin star. Widely spaced tables and concrete floors keep the room grounded while the food goes somewhere else entirely.

  43. Heritage corn sourced from across the Americas and seafood pulled from nearby Florida waters set the agenda at this Coconut Grove Mexican restaurant. The chef's commitment to sustainable sourcing is the kind of thing that could easily tip into lecture, but here it shows up quietly in the food itself. 44. The unmarked door on Green Street gives nothing away, which is sort of the point. Inside, a converted warehouse with wood-beamed ceilings holds a tasting menu restaurant built around a single organizing idea: every dish is either fired or chilled, and you watch the open kitchen run both with near-monastic focus. Chefs serve their own food here, no front-of-house divide. The Nordic New American cooking is ingredient-first, the room is genuinely dramatic, and the clamshell amuse-bouche is as ridiculous as it sounds.

  45. Rank 248. River Twice

    Modern American

The small tables at this modern New American restaurant come fitted with little drawers for your cutlery, which tells you something about how seriously things are taken here. Chef Randy Rucker runs a monthly multicourse tasting menu with a seafood lean and a French-Japanese sensibility, all from local ingredients. Counter seats face the kitchen. A James Beard semifinalist, and the floor-to-ceiling corner windows make the room feel like a decent consolation prize.

  46. The brass footrest running the length of the bar sets the tone: this is a proper neighborhood tavern in Red Hook, the kind with exposed brick, floral wallpaper, and candles wedged between wine bottles on tight-packed tables. The menu is short and the cooking leans classic, which is a polite way of saying the dry-aged cheeseburger with cottage fries is not something you'll talk yourself out of. 51. A caviar shop on Greenwich Street is the front door, and you walk through it into a tasting menu restaurant that earns a Michelin star. Buddha Lo's TriBeCa dining room wears white drapes and generous spacing like it has nothing to prove. Caviar shows up throughout, deployed with more restraint than the setting might suggest, while the kitchen leans on composed sauces and seasonal produce to carry the weight. The kind of place where technique does the talking.

  52. Rank 255. Anju

    Korean

The name says it all: "anju" means Korean food made to go with a drink, and this gastropub on 18th Street takes that premise seriously, with soju, makgeolli, and beer running alongside a menu of fried snacks, rich stews, and banchan. Brick walls, wood floors, and a bit of funky art make it feel like a neighborhood spot that happens to be packed every night. The chef is a James Beard nominee, and the cooking has a mom's-kitchen warmth that earns that comparison without being sentimental.

  53. Rank 256. LUCIEN

    French

A tasting menu restaurant tucked into the third floor of a La Jolla shopping plaza, which sounds unlikely until the food arrives. Chef Elijah Arizmendi trained in New York before coming home to cook California ingredients through French and Japanese lenses, earning a Michelin star in the process. The menu moves from intricate canapes through pristine local fish and poultry, with a live-fire hearth doing quiet work in the background.

  54. Rank 257. Akadi PDX

    Ivorian African

The housemade sauces, a tomato-ginger-carrot blend built on West African spices, are so compulsively dippable that chef Fatou Ouattara now bottles and sells them at local groceries. This lively Division Street restaurant draws from across the region: suya-spiced wings, tangy lamb dibi, okra goat stew, and several vegan stews with the same depth. The New York Times put it on their Portland list, and USA Today named it a Restaurant of the Year.

  55. Rank 257. Animae

    Pan-Asian

Sky-high ceilings, velvet drapes, and cushy curved booths set the stage for chef Tara Monsod's Filipino- and Asian-inflected steakhouse, a room that takes a night out seriously. The menu moves between wagyu, kinilaw, and kare kare without apology, and the bar is worth a stop on its own. Monsod is a two-time James Beard nominee for Best Chef California, which tracks with how the kitchen handles comfort food this opulent.

    Cajun & Creole

The dining room walls, red and hung with African-American art, tell you this is a place with a history before you've touched the menu. A Creole fine dining institution in New Orleans, it holds a James Beard America's Classics Award and a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the cooking, gumbo, fried chicken, peach cobbler, earns every regulars' loyalty. The matriarchs still walk each table personally, which at a certain point stops being service and starts being something else.

  57. Rank 260. Kochi

    Korean

The name means skewer in Korean, which tells you more about the format than "tasting menu" ever could. Chef Sungchul Shim runs an open kitchen where a young team sends out grilled bites meant to be eaten with your hands, one after another, playful and fast. The menu pulls from Korean roots and fine-dining instincts in equal measure. A Michelin star hangs over the whole thing, but the vibe stays loose.

  58. Shelves stocked with wine and imported pantry goods line the walls of this small Spring Street tapas bar, which holds a Michelin star without looking remotely like it's trying. The Spanish menu stays simple on purpose, leaning on precision over performance. The all-Spanish wine list is genuinely interesting, and the room has the settled, lived-in feel of somewhere that's been confident for a long time.

    Japanese

A fourteen-seat counter in Tribeca where the kaiseki menu shifts with the seasons and the soba comes from buckwheat grown near the chef's hometown, which gives the whole thing an unusual personal weight. It holds a Michelin star, and the sake program runs deep enough to occupy a serious collector for the evening. Sharply dressed servers work the room with quiet precision. Wear something nice and clear your night.

  60. Rank 263. Odo

    Japanese

A hidden counter behind the cocktail bar up front, Odo offers an intimate kaiseki tasting menu where the mood is calm and the cooking is anything but ceremonial. Chef Hiroki Odo threads traditional Japanese structure through a personal lens, and two Michelin stars confirm the kitchen is paying attention. The room is quiet by design, so the food does the talking, and it has a lot to say.

    Mexican

Fátima Juárez nixtamalizes heirloom Mexican corn every morning to produce blue, red, and yellow masa, which explains why the tortillas at this molino inside Mercado La Paloma have their own devoted following. The short menu runs through tacos, tlacoyos, and chucitos, but the molotes de plátano, plantain dumplings fried crisp around fresh quesillo and floated in mole negro, landed on the New York Times list of best dishes in the country. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  64. The name means "far from home," which tells you something about what the chef is doing here. This central Phoenix Thai restaurant draws on Bangkok street food and the cooking of the Isan region, with a tight menu of small plates, noodles, and skewers that reads like a personal dispatch rather than a crowd-pleasing survey. The cocktail program is serious enough to make parking on this stretch of Osborn Road feel like a design choice. A James Beard semifinalist, 2024.

  65. Art Deco bones, dim light, and a bar up front that moves at a convincing clip: Le Rock is a proper French brasserie tucked into the ground floor of Rockefeller Center. The team behind Frenchette runs it, and a James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur followed. Seafood platters, duck confit, classic sauces, and profiteroles in buckwheat honey fudge cover the expected ground, with a little tableside theater to keep things lively.

  66. By six on a weekend morning, the lamb is already being hacked apart at this barbacoa shop in the Italian Market, and a line has formed before most of the city is awake. Chef Christina Martinez won a James Beard Award for what comes next: slow-cooked lamb folded into fresh tortillas, quesadillas stuffed with housemade Oaxacan cheese, salsas in every color. The crowd runs from construction workers to food journalists, which tells you something.

  67. The dining room is a century-old Montgomery Ward kit house, the kind of mail-order home that feels like a wry setup for what comes next: four to eight courses of seasonal New American cooking that takes real risks. The chef's tasting menus have landed on the New York Times Restaurant List and earned a James Beard Best New Restaurant semifinalist nod. There's a small inn next door if you'd rather not drive home contemplating dry-aged toro.

  72. Rank 274. Nōksu

    Korean

A code-locked door in the middle of Koreatown opens onto a black marble counter, every chef armed with tweezers and clearly not messing around. Nōksu is a tasting-menu counter focused on contemporary Korean cooking, with seafood at the center and a rocking playlist overhead keeping things from getting too reverent. One Michelin star, and the squab landed on the New York Times top dishes list.

  73. Rank 276. Tamba

    Modern Indian

Oysters dressed with curry emulsions and Kashmiri chili signal right away that this modern Indian restaurant is not following a familiar script. The menu traces the chef's path through the Maldives, Seychelles, and beyond, so coastal raw bar items sit alongside the subcontinent's spice pantry without apology. The room leans toward subdued opulence, the plating rewards a camera, and a James Beard nominee for Best New Restaurant keeps the ambitions in view.

  74. Pasta anchors the menu, but the chef insists Wildweed isn't an Italian restaurant, and a rib eye with umeboshi, seaweed jelly, and fermented crab makes a reasonable case. This Over-the-Rhine dinner spot grew out of years of pop-ups, and the bar counter lets you watch the kitchen work through every strange, precise move. Named to the New York Times Restaurant List and a James Beard nominee, it earns the attention without seeming to chase it.

    Southern American

Formica tabletops and vinyl chairs set the scene at this Garden District breakfast spot, which serves nothing but breakfast and takes that mandate seriously. The menu runs from yogurt and granola to loaded grits, biscuits and gravy, and a riff on the fast-food McMuffin with sage sausage and gooey American cheese. A James Beard semifinalist that manages to feel nothing like one, in the best way.

  76. Rank 280. Gado Gado

    Indonesian

The name means "mix mix" in Indonesian, which is either a promise or a warning depending on your appetite. This eclectic Southeast Asian restaurant from Thomas and Mariah Pisha-Duffly blends Indonesian and Malaysian flavors with bistro instincts, dry-aged tartare showing up alongside rendang and satay. 77. A tableside "chocotherapy" ritual, where chocolate is poured over your hands mid-meal, tells you exactly what kind of tasting menu this is. Chef Juan Manuel Barrientos runs a multisensory Colombian experience in a sleek stone-and-wood room with an open kitchen and backlit bar. The parade of small bites leans theatrical, and the crowd is fully on board. It holds a Michelin star.

  78. An open hearth anchors this airy SoMa tasting menu restaurant, and the kitchen uses it with more finesse than the setting might suggest. Chef Christopher Bleidorn holds a two-star Michelin rating and earns it by pairing live-fire cooking with a real sense of play, lacquered quail assembled tableside like Peking duck, creek trout arriving as roe, dessert hidden under mochi. The room is elegant and the pacing unhurried, so clear your evening.

  79. Dhamaka means "explosion" in Hindi, and the kitchen takes that seriously, sending out smoky goat belly wrapped in cedar wood and mutton in clay pots swimming in dark chili oil with a whole roasted garlic bulb. This is a sit-down Indian restaurant in Essex Market that goes deep into rustic, regional dishes rarely spotted on menus here. The chef holds a James Beard Award. Tables are comically small, so bring people you like close.

Curried goat over sweet potato gnocchi is the dish that quietly explains Nina Compton's whole project here. This Caribbean-inflected restaurant sits inside a converted coffee warehouse in the Warehouse Arts District, all exposed brick and mosaic tile, and the menu pulls together her St. Lucia roots, New Orleans flavors, and stints in Florida kitchens. The bar holds its own, and the service runs warm enough that a James Beard Outstanding Hospitality semifinalist nod makes a certain sense.

  87. Carlton, Oregon has about 2,000 people and one extraordinary dinner reservation to chase. Hayward is a farm-to-table restaurant whose room, all blond wood and warm earth tones, reads more Lower Manhattan than Willamette Valley wine country. The menu is short and seasonal, built around whatever's thriving nearby, which means every visit lands differently. Named a New York Times Restaurant List pick and a James Beard Best New Restaurant nominee.

  88. The open kitchen here runs on live fire: a wood-burning oven, a grill, and a turnspit that turns out roasted pork while chefs pull oysters and raid a glass-windowed vegetable humidor in full view of the dining room. It's a New England restaurant in a high-ceilinged brick warehouse above the Old Port, and a James Beard Outstanding Restaurateur winner. The rope-cultured mussels in garlic-almond butter are the kind of thing regulars order without looking up.

  89. Mandalay's tea leaf salad skips the cabbage most Bay Area Burmese spots default to, landing closer to what you'd find in Myanmar, layered with sesame, peanuts, tomatoes, and fried garlic. It's an old-school Burmese restaurant on California Street that's been around forever without feeling tired. A 2024 James Beard America's Classics winner, it draws regulars who clearly have a usual order and aren't changing it anytime soon.

  93. Rank 297. Xiao Bao

    Pan-Asian

A diner-style Asian restaurant where a giant strawberry guards the door sets the tone for everything inside: Formica tabletops, red velvet couches, and a menu that bounces between hand-pulled noodles topped with brisket and a la zi spiced smash burger on a bao bun with beef fat fries. The retro fever-dream aesthetic is very much the point. The New York Times named it among Nashville's 25 best restaurants.

  94. The carriage house bones are the whole point: a fireplace center stage in winter, and windows that swing open onto a cobblestoned side street in summer, letting Barrow Street essentially become part of the room. This is a fine dining institution that New Yorkers bring people to when they want the city to do the heavy lifting, which it does without much trouble. The kind of place that makes a Tuesday feel like an occasion.

  95. One seating a night, about twenty guests, and chef Ling Qi Wu cooking in front of you: that's the whole deal at this dinner party-style Chinese tasting menu tucked into a strip mall on Research Blvd. Dumplings arrive shaped like animals with fillings like steamed lobster and crawfish with XO sauce, and duck with foie gras and caviar shows up alongside a bao bun with a cutout in it, somehow both silly and serious. The Michelin Guide has it listed.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
